Re: [meteorite-list] Bensour TKW
I was in Morocco again in the end of April, and still told by EVERYONE there, that the day was Sunday, 12 February. To the best of my knowledge, adding up the 18 kilos I got with all the known amounts other dealers bought, it still seems to be just around 30 kilos. Mike Farmer - Original Message - From: Roman Jirasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 06, 2002 4:00 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Bensour TKW Would any one have a good idea on the total known weight of the new February 10th / 11th / 12th? Fall? I hear there has been more material recovered from the area. Are we at ~25k or up to ~45 kilos? I will need to know this information and the exact fall date, before I produce a new label for Bensour. Is the name even for sure? Maybe Jeff Grossman can shed some light on this. [meteorite-list] First Ureilite in my collection
Hello All! I just received my very first ureilite, Dhofar 132. It weighs in at a whopping 9 grams (I had successfully bid on it on EBay about a week ago). Wow, what a sight under the microscope. You clearly see all those elongated olivine and pyroxene mineral grains with their preferred orientation (see McSWEEN H.Y. (1999) Meteorites and Their Parent Planets, p. 146 for a poor reproduction of that glorious view), the triple junctions and the dark, carbonaceous matter filling the spaces between the grains. Thank you Serguei for such a beautiful specimen! Best regards, Bernd __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] portales crust
I absolutely agree with your assessment Frank. The thick crust is over the stone areas and the thin crust is generally over the metal areas. Of course, this is just from my observation of my specimen. http://208.55.105.193/portales491s.htm Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 Catch a Falling Star Meteorites http://www.catchafallingstar.com From: Frank Cressy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], meteorite1.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] portales crust Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 18:59:44 -0700 Hello Ron and all, The following link is a closs-up of a Portales Valley individual taken from Jim Strope's picture gallery on his website (catchafallingstar). http://208.55.105.193/index/pv491flow1.jpg It seems to clearly show different crusts depending on the underlying material; either metal or stone. I think thin metal veins may be crusted over with a stoney material crust, but if the metal areas have a sufficient surface area, then they clearly show a difference. Maybe Jim can give us a better idea of scale?? [meteorite-list] Backyard Search for Asteroids and Extrasolar Planets
http://skyandtelescope.com/news/current/article_627_1.asp Backyard Search for Asteroids and Extrasolar Planets By David L. Chandler Sky Telescope June 7, 2002 An ingenious arrangement of three homebuilt 14-inch telescopes on fixed mountings is enabling Tucson-based amateur astronomer Roy Tucker to conduct a backyard hunt for asteroids whose quality is on par with the best professional searches in the world. Tucker, an instrumentation engineer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), completed his new telescope setup last April. The fixed mountings made the whole construction far less expensive than any telescope set up on a normal, steerable mount. Tucker's fixed telescopes scan the sky as the Earth turns and reach a limiting magnitude of 20.5 - fainter than most professional asteroid searches. And thanks to a cleverly designed bimetallic (steel and aluminum) framework that automatically compensates for temperature changes, the telescope can run unattended all night with no need for focus adjustments. The three telescopes are arranged so that they produce sequential image triplets that can be compared to reveal any moving objects. Since his earlier searches began in 1998 (Sky Telescope: March 1999, page 76), Tucker has detected 4,812 asteroids, several hundred of which were new discoveries. He presented his latest results in a poster at the Albuquerque AAS meeting. Now, with the help of a nonprofit organization of amateur and professional astronomers called GNAT (Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes), he hopes to expand the system, which initially cost him just $12,000, into a globe-spanning network of 48 telescopes to provide 24-hour-a-day time coverage. GNAT is seeking involvement by universities, small colleges, schools, and serious amateurs. Such a network should make it possible not only to discover many more asteroids, but also to do precise photometric searches for supernovae, variable stars, and even extrasolar planet transits, says Tucker. Roger Culver, an astronomer at Colorado State University and one of GNAT's organizers, says this is a chance to really bring small telescopes back to the fore and really do some interesting things. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Bensour TKW
My contacts are still saying the 11th that it fell and since it fell in a militarized zone witnessed by a lot of people I cant see it being any other date. I got 9 kilos of the material that fell in morocco (7 that was picked up the day of the fall - about 2/3rds of all material that fell in morocco) and I have another 5 kilos of the material that was found in Algeria and came out over a month later. If farmer has 18 kilos just me and him has 32 kilos between us and I know of two other dealers with a combined 9 kilos. There is a scattering of other pieces around here and there so I suspect that when all is said and done the TKW will come in at about 45 to 50 kilos. I havent been offered much bensour over the past couple of weeks and that would indicate to me that there is not much more in morocco to be had so I dont think that you will be seeing more. [meteorite-list] Interesting meteorites- Portales and Sahara 98362
Hello all, The list has recently discussed the Portales Valley meteorite with more to be said I'm sure. I have a wonderfulpiece that has a nice mix of metal vein and stone...including a few large chondrulesright next to a metal vein. Very strange...you would think such an impact would alter the stone greatly...but it doesn't look like it at first glance. Also the crust over the metal portion is black and not thick. The crust over the stone portion is similar but has the look of having more minerals in it. With my small 5g piece, I cannot make too many observations. That brings me to a different meteorite. It is Sahara 98362, which is supposedly a H6, impact melt breccia (IMB). My first question is"Has it been thoroughly studied, and where can I find results?" The second issue...what is difference between animpact melt and what happended to the Portales stone material? One hit by stone and the other hit by an iron? It must be more than that, because the 98362 material is glass-like when viewing a fractured surface. It is loaded with metal. I seen no other meteorite like it. It looks almost like the sulphur slag that has been discussed lately. Help...will someone please provide more insight into this very strange meteorite? Thanx in advance, John Divelbiss
