Re: [meteorite-list] impactite vs. impact glass

2003-03-22 Thread Dennis Harries

Hello Bob and all,
Probably this nomenclature is applicable to all kinds of impact related rocks, as are meteorites.
It seem to me that the term 'impact melt breccia' should be discarded, because it is usually NOT a brecciated impact melt rock set in a clastic or igneous matrix, but clasts of non melted rock set in a molten matrix. Usually the term accompaning 'breccia' refers to the nature of the clasts itselves, not to the nature of the matrix. So themore correctterm for 'impact melt breccia' would be 'impact melt rock' or 'impact melt rock with lithic clasts'. That´s how I understood it.
In a singles impact eventthe melting and solidification of a rock can not predate the formation of a breccia of this materialdue to the same impact event. So truly (impact) brecciated impact melt rocks (=impact melt breccias) are extremly rare on earth, but elsewhere (an impact melt rock may be brecciated by another impact event, if it is monomict, it is an impact meltbreccia, if it is polymict it is something else, maybe a lithic breccia or a regolith breccia...). Well, I hope I got it right, scientists seem to love that ;-)
Best wishes
Dennis Harries

Hello Dave and Dennis and all,

This USGS paper raises more questions.

Under the term "Impact Melt Breccia" it recommends
that it's use be "discarded"!

It doesn't suggest a replacement term. It's not
obvious to me what the new term should be, so could
someone tell me, what is the "preferred" term?

Since the author is Stoffler, I'm assuming these terms
are applicable for use in describing meteorites. But
this may not be the case. I may be wrong in my
assumption, and this list of terms may be only
applicable for metamorphic processes involving Terran,
Lunar, and Martian impact events and their resultant
impactites.

Is there a separate list of "approved" terms for
asteroidal impact events and meteorites?

More questions still,
BOb V.

Hello all
I want to ask You how You cut nantan or any other iron meteorite ?
Besouse yesterday I received my 5kg nantan and start to cut it on one end
(small slice around 7x4cm) and I destroy 2 diamond blades 0.5mm. This was
verry strange, becouse diamonds from one half of this blades was weared out
and from another not. Now I have this blades with diamonds for example 4mm
on one side and 5mm on another (in diameter).
This can be any troilite inclusion or what ? Blade was cut this nantan up to
1.5cm inside and then stop cutting and start waste blade.

Anyone know what happend ? This was my first iron cutting on my machine.
Thanks for help

2003-03-22 Thread Charlie Devine
Tom,
What happens when a meteorite collector discovers ebay? They go
bonkers! I've seen it happen many times. Sometimes they're new to
meteorites, in which case they often overpay. If he's new to
meteorites, he'll eventually find other venues to acquire meteorites. If
they already collect meteorites, and are simply new to ebay, eventually
he'll calm down. Probably not a list member, and no harm is done
writing to this person and inviting him/her to join the list. I've done
so in the past and they're usually grateful to learn the meteorite-list
community exists where they can learn more. You might try this. Just
don't comment on his/her spending habits so as not to be accused of
interfering with an auction.
Best,
Charlie

2003-03-22 Thread Jamie Stephens
Marcin,

Just a few weeks ago, I posted a short summary message on this
subject. It should be in archive on March 1.

The best answer is to use a big metal-cutting band saw. That's
probably the only good way to cut big irons. I have cut Campos
on a lapidary saw, but it takes a very long time and the blade
suffers. I use a homemade gravity feed system. I haven't cut
enough to gauge blade wear.

I've heard that A Meteorite magazine article by Allen Langheinrich
discusses the details, but I haven't seen the article. I think
it might have been in the August 97 issue (which is sold out).

The classic advice is to leave it to the pros. Some would
probably be happy to give you an estimate of the cost.

Re: [meteorite-list] Iron cutting problems :))

2003-03-22 Thread John Gwilliam
It sounds to me like the arbor you have the blade mounted to is not
perfectly (90 degrees) perpendicular to the feed direction of your saw vice
with the meteorite mounted in it. This skewed alignment will cause the
type of wear you're talking about. Make sure you're using a coolant oil
designed for diamonds saws...like Almag or the equivalent.

You don't mention the diameter of your blade, but judging by the thickness
you have mentioned, it sounds like you're using a 10 inch or smaller
blade. I have used a 20 inch diamond saw with a 0.065 inch thick blade to
slice lots of iron meteorites, including Chinga, which is very hard. Using
a small diameter blade on a big meteorite produces a lot of heat which is
one of the biggest enemies of diamond blades.

Your blade is a bit on the thin side as well. A 0.5mm blade is only 0.020
inches. This allows the blade to flex during cutting especially if you put
too much feed pressure or weight on it. Choose blade 0.050 (1.25mm) or
thicker and don't over pressure the feed rate. Your blade RPMs can also be
a source of problems. Run the blade too slow, and I guarantee it will
follow a path that isn't straight.

Campos are very inexpensive compared to diamond blades, you can afford to
loose a little more material in the cutting process. Use a bigger, thicker
blade.

Best,

John Gwilliam

I wouldn't worry too much about this buyer. I looked up a couple of his

[meteorite-list] Big-Ass Purple Campo

2003-03-22 Thread Bob Martino
All,

And now for an update on the Big-Ass Campo formerly known as Rusty.

As you may recall (those who care, anyway), I bought a 19-pound Campo at the
Tucson 2003 show this year. No New Campo this, it was definitely an
Old-School specimen. Totally covered in rust.

I contacted Bill Mason and bought one of his new Meteorite Treatment Kits.
Unfortunately, I've had mixed results with it.

Yes, the rust-eating acid worked very well indeed. Unfortunately, the
instructions included with the kit left a bit to be desired. In one place
they say to neutralize the acid next, then soak it in alcohol. In another
place, it wrongly states to soak in alcohol first and _then_ use the acid
neutralizer. (Guess which instructions I followed.) I also followed the
instruction set which didn't happen to mention that the acid neutralizer
needs to be diluted with water first (In one place the instructions say
dilute 10:1 with water, and in another it says 20:1). The result was a
sticky meteorite with way too much neutralizer on it. Thus, when the oven
baking was in progress, my house was filled with a nasty burning chemical
stink. The heat also apparently destroyed the neutralizer chemicals, leaving
me with an ugly white deposit on the specimen (The fact that the cat grew
another head is probably just a coincidence).

So I went back and re-did the whole thing. At least the acid treatment went
fast because most of the rust was already gone. I also took the time to work
over my 4-inch long Nantan with the rust remover (It's now a nice 2-inch
long Nantan). I got the order of treatment and the concentration of
chemicals correct this time, I think.

Everything went well until the final coating with the spray-on sealant. Now,
my Nantan and my Campo are purple.

I can think of perhaps three reasons for this:

(1) I left the two specimens in the sun all day to dry cure the spray
coating. Did a chemical/color change occur because of light, heat, or both?
(2) Perhaps the acid neutralizer was still too concentrated. There may have
been a reaction between the neutralizer and the spray-on coating.
(3) Perhaps the spray-on coating is simply too thick. I used four coats. The
instructions _did_ say spray on more layers to add mil thickness, but then
again, they failed me before.

There is nothing in the instructions warning about Purple Haze or how to
avoid it.

Has anyone else have this problem?

So now I'm faced with removing the coating with acetone and trying yet
again. I'm also wondering how the acetone will affect the special
rust-inhibiting chemicals applied to the specimen by the various treatment
steps. Will I have to start all over again, or can I just spray on a new
coating and not worry? More important, how do I prevent the Purple Haze from
returning?

First I removed the rust with a wire brush on my drill, then I followed the instructions. No problem. The slice had been rusting away, getting really ugly, but has been stable for the past year, no sign of the rust returning, and as the members of the COMETS club can attest, it's a beauty.
I suspect the purple haze may be from leaving the meteorite out in the sun to dry for a day. But I have not experienced that problem, as yet. I'm sure Bill Mason will be able to help you.
