Re: [meteorite-list] Dronino - the new definition of space junk

2004-01-18 Thread Jeff Kuyken

G'day,

I've got a 1kg 3kg individual. They have shown a little
spot of rust here and there but a brief Sodium Hydroxide bath worked a treat.
This one is no-where near as bad Nantan Campo. Only thing is though, it
still hasn't been voted on by the Nom Com to my knowledge. Anyone heard if it's
supposed classification has been confirmed?

Cheers,

Re: [meteorite-list] Dronino - the new definition of space junk

2004-01-18 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi,

and why there are no data available?
Most of us will have to confess, that when they saw Dronino for the first
time, they didn't think, that it could be a meteorite with those troilites
looking like melted and flown.
Should it be the perfect crime? A fake like Shirokovsky, though selling at
100$/kg much cheaper than the creator had produced it for, thus unsuspected?
What an ingenious and devilish brain!
Does anyone has pictures of an entched slice?
Yesterday Mr.Pilski, the best iron preparator I know, sent me a picture of
an etched slice,
showing very faintly somthing like pattern, but totally chaotic and
irregular.

Cheers!

[meteorite-list] Dronino

2004-01-18 Thread Jeff Grossman

Dronino has been classified as an ungrouped ataxite by Vernadsky and
UCLA. It was in the last vote by the NomCom. I'll find out
tomorrow if it was actually approved (I didn't know of any serious
problems), but you can be confident in its classification as a real iron
meteorite.

Hello,

I've learned my lesson once and for all. I'll be buying stones, stones, and
more stones for now on. Fortunately I did not spend much for my little
Dronino, and maybe properly prepared slices do last longer...but personally
I'm not interested in bathing, soaking, baking, oiling, brushing, isolating,
etc. my iron meteorites so that they do not fall apart before my eyes. I'll
conserve all my save the whales energy for my biggest Campo and leave the
rest alone. Let-em fall apart...damn the torpedos..yada, yada, yada.

I guess I'm being lazy when it comes to maintaining these things. So be it.

One of my two Antarctic meteorites is a tiny sliver of Thule Mtns., a

fortunate to have acquired it, so eat your hearts out, everyone!

Typos aside, let us all pay tribute to H. H. Nininger, one of the fathers of

Here's to the Prof. of Geology,
Master of all Natural History,
Rare boy he, and rare boys we,

If you want more info in the "litosiderite" , why not contact the folks who signed off on the "certificate", written in English, at the Centro de Tecnologia de Materiales division of their Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología in Caracas.

The analyst's is Morvin Ascanio: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
