I would like to PAY to stay/become/ renew a membership of the IMCA.

The easiest for me is Paypal.

 What are:

the amount I should send, all included.

I can also donate a meteorite but I think that it is easier in cash , no
?
Thank you for reading all ;-)

  Dear All,
Seems many list members didn't read this email the first time around so
  here it is again,
SEE BELOW SECOND PARAGRAPH, FOURTH PARAGRAPH AND READ IT ALLI GUESS.

   Hello Everybody,

Thank you for all the comments, questions, suggestions and criticisms
you have been sending us lately. We do read them and discuss them. So,
let me try to answer as many of you as possible now. (grab a cup of
coffee, this is going to be almost as long as some of Dougs emails.
   Just kidding, Doug.)

First of all let me restate what the IMCA is all about and our goals:
Authenticity is the corner stone of the International Meteorite
Collectors Association and all members are asked to refrain from ever
knowingly selling or promoting fake meteorites or related material
(tektite, impact breccia, impact glass, etc.) as condition of
membership. To promote authenticity, the IMCA and its members are
available to educate the public and will assist in getting
   questionable material analyzed and authenticated.

I hope this will settle a few arguments.

Now, where is the IMCA going.
The IMCA is now a bit over 2 years old, what was an experiment appears
to be successful, so it is time for the IMCA to become a legal entity,
with a charter, rules, dues, legal rights and legal protection. We
have been discussing this for a while and have gathered information.
What it really boils down to is that it requires having a lot of
paperwork done by a specialized lawyer, and it will cost quite a bit
of money. And that is the biggest obstacle. The only way we see to
make that possible is via dues. So we are now asking all members to
pay $20 for the privilege of being a member of the IMCA. A small
price to secure the future of the association, and its legal
protection. We expect that with these funds we will be able to tackle
that work and actually become a real Association. And if there is a
specialized lawyer, looking for a tax write-off among you, please do
   contact us.

I would like to add that we do appreciate the various fundraisers, and
the items donated to Michael Bloods auction in Tucson, and we really
want to thank the high-bidders. But this is simply not enough if we
want this association to grow and be legally protected.

And we do need to be a lot more visible, so (when we have some money)
what we would really like to do is this: if you do a search for
meteorite on Ebay, a nice blue banner appears on top of the page,
asks if you want to buy nice authentic meteorites and gives you a link
to the web site of a well-known meteorite dealer (and IMCA member).
Now, wouldnt it be nice if a banner showed up asking if you want to
buy real meteorites or waste your money on fakes, with a link to the
IMCA site? It would make Kens work a lot easier. Eventually we
could have a similar banner on Google too.

To answer other suggestions, yes, we are planning on an Education
page on the site, and a page where Ken could post his warnings and
findings is a good idea too. All these will happen as soon as Jim and
Rhett are done cleaning up the mess Yahoo caused, and issuing new
logos with the correct address on them. A very big job.

In the mean time please keep on sending us your opinions, criticisms
and praises (?). We will try to answer as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your attention, and your patience.

[meteorite-list] Kaali Crater postcards and Joe the Lamp comic

2004-02-29 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello list, FirstI would like to thank the different list members for their help with my Kaali Crater postcards. If I haven't answered your e-mail or request yet, I will shortly. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/postcardsestonia.html I have corrected information and added links to larger scans of the front of the each of the older postcards. If anyone can provided more dating information, that would be great. At some time I plan on having both sides of each click able, as well as most of my postcard collection. I will be giving the postcards a catalog number but at this time I will only be cataloging the cards in my collection and not all. A special thanks to Anto Raukas, who was kind enough to provided information, and didn't even mention that he co wrote an article in the November 2003 Meteorite Magazine (pg. 32-33) on the craters. This last week I had to take off and fly to the east coast and back. I don't mind flying, but with Tucson, I had read all the flying magazines I usually buy, and all the airplane advertisement magazines already, and since I needed an article for a freelance job, I thought, this would be a great time to do it. However, some female eBay buyer sent me a drawling she made of a female Joe the lamp (I mention Joe the lamp briefly on my eBay about me) And with thought in mind..I better start that freelance article because instead I came up with this. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/joethelamp00.html Mark Bostick Wichita, Kansaswhen home www.meteoritearticles.com www.kansasmeteoritesociety.com

[meteorite-list] Bernd / Clast vs. Inclusion

2004-02-29 Thread MexicoDoug
I got four private replies to this question, two that were informative and two that wanted me to forward them any info I received off list. So let me take this opportunity to relate my updated understanding of this, bcc: Bernd Pauli with a formal invitation to post his thoughts. (RSVP - Bernd, please come back. If anyone starts up with the disrespect that caused Bernd to remove himself from the list, I'll threaten them to be recipient of my well intentioned but WORDY emails. Ask Anne, she might expand on what you're in for).

OK, here's the thoughts hopefully to be constructively critiqued:

Inclusion is the more general term, for which a clast is a special case with arguable limits of application. An inclusion which is not called a clast is a chance introduction of material into the matrix from an external source which is generally not characteristic of a concretion type matrix.

All clasts are inclusions which additionally are common in the concretion type matrix or in its case, derived from it. In practical terms, this means most reasonably sized samples from the overall matrix have a high probability or definable composition proportion of the clast material.

Size doesn't matter. Composition and frequency of inclusion does. Thus, it is inconsistent to restrict or exclusively suggest the term "inclusions" for larger elements and "clasts" for smaller ones of the same type in the same type of matrix. Opinion: If something is a clast, it should be referred to as so, and not interchangably in the same writing with the more general term inclusion. If the writer doesn't wish to commit whether it is a clast of not - and this requires knowledge of the martrix being studied -, only the general word inclusion should be used throughout.

It would be nice if a general agreement on the limits were had since science seems to depend somewhat on precision.. This sort of reminds me of the terminology issue in the difference between Howardites and Eucrites. The latter is based on diogenite composition and frequency as I understand. Yet for a ridiculous tweak in the composition, it appears that one can sell for triple the price of the other to a collector.

Finally, special thanks to Mark Ferguson, for his helpful comments re: application in geology (Mark didn't critique this yet, though.)

Saludos
Doug

[meteorite-list] smara fall

2004-02-29 Thread aziz habibi
hello all
a team has recovred a fall , this may be the one we talk abaout it last year
when tucson was rununing , its an h chondrite.
it has been founld in south morroco near mauritanie.
this is almost 1800 kilometre from erfoud .
the name of this fall is smara.
it look like its has been on earth one year or so not so beautifull as bensour
wich was an LL chondrite, this one is also nice greenish H chondrite
let see what analisis will say but i think its an H6.
its very few magnetic and very nice color.
well there is also an other one recovred, its in studies at the university of
usa (whashington) , lets see which one is the fresh one, this last fall is
called tabelbalet, its an ll3/4
all the best
habibi
nb: the exact location of smara fall is the frontier between morroco and
mauritanie and algeria, its under very hot security and then very few of it will
go out of morroco, as its in the place where military control is evident.

2004-02-29 Thread Michael Farmer
I have this new fall, fell October 16 2003 at 0200 in
military post on Mauritania border. Is not named until
nomenclature commitee gives it name. It is an H 3 or 4
breccia, and despite what Habibi says, is not at all
weatered, and those of you who bought bensour from me
know that when i say fresh, i mean fresh.
Perhaps he saw a different stone?
I will be divying it up among my partners next week,
and want to tell all that there will not be that much
to go around, so email me NOW with what you want to
spend; i will put in order and go first come first
served. Many small stones but we will be keeping a
good amount for our selves; so i would say only 20
pieces totaling about 1.5 kilo will be for sale, as
you can see, not much.
This one will not be like Bensour, little out there to
get.

 Sincerely, Michael

Yes, Matteo is out of list so PLEASE leave him alone. Mike why You forward his email
sended to YOU to this list ? There is something about us ? I dont think so.

Tell us what kind of new meteorites You find in Morocco. This will be more interesting
than Your problems with Mr Proud Matteo :)

Next monday I also go to Moroco for the first time ! If someone can send me any advice
where to buy meteorites or who contact there :-) this will be verry helpfull. I will go
with a group or 5 persons who search for minerals, so this will not be a exactly
meteorite hinting.

Re: [meteorite-list] new fall

2004-02-29 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi list,

I wonder why in that region so many falls are observed and found. It's not
directly very crowded in that aerea and something I think by myself, perhaps
they saw a nice bright shooting star in the dark, dark desert nights and
some weeks later the find among the normal W3-stuff a nice fresh W0,
concluding that it must have been the shooting star?
Something like El Hammami
Or it's because most people there are meanwhile great experts in
meteoritics, more sensible and pay more attention?

Ech, this mail should not sound insulting, don't want to hear about
isotopes, I would only feel better, if someone could give more details about
the circumstances of the falls. An eyewitness report would be nice, a
day-light-fireball great.

Cheers!
Martin A.
who jelously sits in Bavaria, where every 160 years an observed fall is
found.

orders are coming in; will try to confirm but using
Arabic keyboard is near impossible so excuse the
 typos.
If you want a piece; DO NOT WAIT as I will run out.
Just as beautiful as Bensour, of course hard stones
and thicker crust. most 100 percent crusted, none
oriented, some broeken to be cut; gorgeous breccia.

Moroco is now full of collectors, dealers, prospectors, nomads etc. So every new fall
alvays fall near which of them.

[meteorite-list] AZ hunt

2004-02-29 Thread Matson, Robert
Welcome aboard, PrintsTodd.

Any ideas on some good meteorite hunting grounds here in Arizona?

If your goal is to find a meteorite -- any meteorite -- your best
bet is to go where they've been found before. Gold Basin or nearby
Red Dry Lake would be good places to start.

If your goal is to make a NEW find, then these are still good places
to start. But anywhere that has limited vegetation, low annual
rainfall, and an old surface will do. --Rob

This one will not be like Bensour, little out there to
 get.

[meteorite-list] New Fall called Amgala from Western Sahara

2004-02-29 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

It looks like the cat is out of the bag. We have been working on this new
fall for several months now and have accumulated several kilograms (largest
inventory of Amgala in the World) which we plan to release later this week
at excellent prices. We acquired many times more material than anybody else
so we can offer the best specimens at the best prices. We will be posting
several images with dozens of examples each to pick from. We normally do
not release material until it is completely classified but will make an
exception in this case since we should have the classification data within
two weeks. We have very nice looking Amgala (Proprietary Provisional Name)
inventory with completely crusted and oriented specimens so you may want to
consider these before making any purchasing decisions. Here is a link to
some images of a test samples:

http://www.lunarrock.com/amgala/amgalagroup.jpg

Here is the provisional data and coordinates:

Amgala Meteorite Fall - October 16, 2003

Location: Amgala to Oum Dreyga, Western Sahara, Morocco
Date: October 16, 2003
Time: 2:00 AM GMT
Direction of fall: Southwesterly
Coordinates of known strewn field to date:
Amgala
Latitude: 26 degrees 15' North
Longitude: 11 degrees 12' West
Oum Dreyga
Latitude: 24 degrees 12' North
Longitude: 13 degrees 20' West
Amount recovered: Approximately 15 kilos
Classification: Chondrite (pending)

Witness statements from 3 soldiers in Tiyert (sp) collected by Team
LunarRock
1) Youssef Oukhaye - Saw the red high and smoker and heard the sound of two
bangs. 2) Hamidi Hdou - Supposed that a plane was falling.
3) Yassine M'hamed - Heard a strange sound breaking the land.

Here is a link to a map of the region:

http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/wsahara.pdf

New falls are always exciting and we want to apologize for keeping this
secret for so long. We just did not want a repeat of Bensour or Thuathe on
our hands.

All the best,

Adam and Greg Hupe

[meteorite-list] Fw: Park Forest Strewnfield report

From: Comcast Mail

To: Meteorite list
Sent: Sunday, February 29, 2004 7:14 PM
Subject: Park Forest Strewnfield report

I just got back from hunting Park Forest and
Olympia fields. Two days of hunting mostly forested areas and no new finds.

The forests are 95% covered with leaves. It is
easier to work through the forests though, considering the lack of growth
compared to spring and summer.
I used a metal detector through most of the
forests. If anyone plans on hunting the forests with a metal detector, plan on
it going off every few yards as there is alot of trash buried below the soil.

And alot of times when the detector detected metal
I couldn't dig deep enough because alot of the ground is frozen still. Which is
really pointless anyways considering the meteorites shouldnt be buried in
soil.
Unfortunately a metal detector is necessary ,
unless you plan on checking under every leaf. Its the same if you are trying to
Identify impact pits. The Forest is wall to wall leaves.
I visited with a couple of locals that I know who
still hunt, and they havent found any new pieces since last summer.
Oh well, if anyone has plans to hunt the forests,
any new finds will be sheer luck.

[meteorite-list] Cumberland Falls

2004-02-29 Thread MarkF

Hello list
I've done some web scouring and can't seem to turn
up enough good info.
What I would like is the approximate co-ordinates
of the Cumberland Falls fall.
The main stone I have approximate co-ordinates for,
but understand two other stones were found as well but only that they were a
little ways away from the 1st.
As I'm only about 20 miles from there, I thought
I'd look this spring and summer but need to know the general direction the two
other stones fell from the 1st. If anyone knows some of this info, I would be
most happy.
Thanks
Mark

2004-02-29 Thread Fredmeteorhall
Hello Bob Evans,
I would have done just the opposite of the Matteo like gentleman selling the meteorite (rock!) from his fish tank. Instead of sticking the meteorite into the fish tank I would have stuck a fish in the meteorite's hole. Once you got over the smell of decaying fish, it would make a great conversation piece. Or maybe a fine work of art to be displayed in an upscale art gallery...Indeed Sir, this is the finest meteoritic flying fish art created this Century! Why, some poor sucker, uhhh, art lover could have the fantastic piece for only $60,000.00
By the way, I have a fine looking NWA 869 (Taza) with a hole near the center and I would be happy to install a minnow into the Taza ablation hole and sell it for only $19,000. Any suc, I mean fine art lovers out there?
