Hello Everyone,

Many thanks to Art, who pointed me in the right direction for my bumper

Now, years ago I saw a shirt that read, "Free the Bound Periodicals"

Anyone seen that one?

Hi David,

Well, shoot, man. Just take an ordinary H6 or L6 and place it in the oven
on the highest setting for a few hours and you will have an H7 or L7 :-)

Just ran that by my wife. She was not amused.

I love science humor. I am still looking for that bumper sticker that

2004-12-09 Thread David Weir
Hello list,

I just purchased the final meteorite type to "complete" my systematic
collection (now I have thought that many times before :) Though it is
only a provisional H chondrite pending O-isotope data to insure the
proper parent body, I have some confidence that this one will finally
prove to be. Of course I still hope for further sampling from distinct
parent bodies, but this ordinary H7 has been a long time coming - one
reason for this is presented on my NWA 2635 webpage. I look forward to
receiving the piece from Mike next week. Anyone have an H/L7?

Re: [meteorite-list] 2nd comment on TUCSON AUCTION - On line catalog started (AD)

2004-12-09 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi all,
I have received comments off list about so many entries from one
source given that I have always promoted this as "The People's Auction."
This is where I am at with it:
I will be DELIGHTED to take quality entries form anyone and
everyone. To date, this is what I have received. They are EXCELLENT
and have either no minimum or very low minimums for what they
are. I am delighted with them - and would LOVE to have 75 more entries
from other parties.
Y'all send me as much as you want of material of this quality.
To date, I have ONE other entry from ONE other person.
If people want this to remain true in spirit to "The People's
Auction" then the people will have to send things in for listing. It IS
The People's Auction - just the people are sitting on their hands
Last year I had OVER HALF the "people" (non-dealers) who wanted
to put stuff in the auction show up AFTER 7:15 PM - with less than
fifteen minutes to go before bid calling. Of course, I turned all but
the very best away.
I will be more than happy to place good photos on line providing
advanced advertising, etc. However, I will have a catalog of good material
and if that comes from one, two or three dealers or 55 collectors, is up
to the people who do or do not submit items.
7:15 on the night of the auction probably won't get in. they
certainly won't be in the on line catalog.
Bring 'm on! Michael

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Collecting Expensive? Not!

2004-12-09 Thread branchw
Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to share with everyone some recent acquisitions. I love these
specimens, not just because they are fine examples of meteorites, but also
because they were relatively inexpensive.

First up, here is one of my favorite meteorites, a 56 gram
chunk (fragment) of Allende. It show wonderful CAIs, nice bulging
chondrules and blebs of triolite. Unfortunately, I can't get very good
closeups with my present digital camera so you will have to take my word for
it - this is a stunning piece. I got it from Steve Arnold (Arkansas) for
$2.88/gram. Though no documentation was included, Steve indicated that this
piece was from the Elbert King collection. Take at look:
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/all1.jpg
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/all2.jpg

Next, we have one of the most sculpted specimens of Campo del Cielo I have
ever seen. It is VERY solid and I am sure will not simply rust away. It
displays exceptionally well, looking sort of like a horse's saddle or a
futuristic spaceship. The pictures really do not do it justice. Even my
most jaded relatives were impressed when I showed to them at Thanksgiving a
couple of weeks ago. Got this one from John Birdsell for .07/gram and it
weighs 1348 grams:
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/camp1.jpg
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/camp2.jpg
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/camp3.jpg

Finally, look at this 3380 gram monster NWA 869 I got from Dean Bessey.
.10/gram and worth much more. I love the way it displays. It has nice
regmaglypts and it has a natural "overhang" which is where I have placed the
Allende (for now, anyway). I am having fun cleaning the caliche from the
surface. It even came with real NWA sand trapped in some tight places,
 - aa
(cleaning that as well)! Take a look:
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/nwa8691.jpg
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/nwa8692.jpg
http://www.branchmeteorites.com/misc/nwa8693.jpg

Many thanks to Steve, John and Dean for such great specimens.

Great specimens obtained for a song. Who says meteorite collecting is
expensive.

Life is good, eh!

(BTW, dental picks make good cleaning instruments. I have a few extra. If
you need one, let me know and I will send one to you for free.)

-Walter

[meteorite-list] New H7, the first in Private hands

2004-12-09 Thread Michael Farmer
Hello everyone, I am announcing a very rare meteorite. It is NWA 2635. A new
H7 chondrite. There are now only 5 H7's known, the other four are from
Antarctica.
This is a must for any type collector. Extremely rare, very nice meteorite.
I have loaded it on my website, at a price that should make it fly out the
door.
One other dealer thought they had an H7 and listed it for sale for $200
gram, mine is $50 gram, which is a steal for something not represented in
private collections before!
I am awaiting more classifications, but they wont be done until after the
holidays, so just in time for the Tucson show.
http://www.meteoriteguy.com/information.htm
Go to my website and see this rare meteorite, and get some under your
Christmas tree or in your stocking.

Re: [meteorite-list] French meteorite book/German books

2004-12-09 Thread meteoriteplaya
Hi Bernd

>But Martin is right with regard to Rolf W.Buehler's: Meteorite - Urmaterie
aus dem interplanetaren Raum, 1988. It is the only comprehensive book on
meteorites in German that can compare with O.R. Norton's books.<

As for out of print books you are correct Rolf's book is excellent. I just
wished the pictures were in color. I'm sure due to the cost of color though it
would be a very expensive book. It is quite a long (Wide) book and would not
fit on my existing book shelf so I had to by a new deeper bookcase for it. Made
the book more expensive than I planned on.

>F. Heide, Kleine Meteoritenkunde, 3rd edn., 1988, pp. 188.*
* updated by F. Wlotzka<

Is this one still in print?

>and, of course, Dieter's recent booklet on the Neuschwanstein meteorite:<

I also have this one "Thanks Dieter" and I would recommend it to any even if
you can't read German.

Re: [meteorite-list] TUCSON AUCTION - On line catalog started (AD)

2004-12-09 Thread Michael L Blood
Greetings all,
For those interested in seeing the first 35 items already submitted
for the Tucson Auction (Sat, Feb.5th) , go to:

http://www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson05.html

and hit the link for the On Line Catalog.
The first 35 photos are up and an additional 30 items are listed
(Their photos will be up shortly).
People interested in listing items need to submit forthwith. Items
with no minimum will be given preference, as will items of exceptional
quality and a low opening minimum. Items not meeting these criteria
are subject to rejection. However, the sooner the submission, the greater
the likelihood of acceptance.
As you can see, there are numerous excellent specimens with no minimum
at all. This should make for an exciting event. I will be posting photos to
the site as quickly as possible, so the site should have tons of photos in
the immediate future.
Note: you can click on the small image to see a much larger image of
each item.
Please contact me off list for absentee bids or to list items for
sale.
Best wishes, Michael

Good Evening List,

Any hobby is as expensive or not as you make it, including meteorites.

The tricky part is to stay within ones limitations (I think Dirty Harry once
said that).

I would say cheating death is a pretty expensive hobby, drinking and
gambling are pretty expensive hobbies, they can cost one a life's'
fortune, or one's life. Smoking costs lives.
Love of motor racing, skydiving.
Define expensive...in terms of dollar bills...Penny Marshall has
a pretty rich collection of sports memorabilia ...tens of millions of
dollars worthsame with collectable cars, a few million here or
there.Airplane collectors can roll out a number of millions on
specific planes... the top ten Elvis or Beatles memorabilia, or the top
five Star trek colletors...tens of millions of dollars for the top
collections. Babe Ruth's baseball bat, 1.5 million dollars. Honus
Wagner baseball card ~ 1 million dollars.
And then there are paintings and rare art Roy Rogers, John Wayne,
acting memorabilia ...mmm.
My bet is meteorites is up there but not at the top possibly because it
is not as popular as baseball cards or comic books.

The English translation was done by our own Anne Black !

But Martin is right with regard to Rolf W.Buehler's: Meteorite - Urmaterie
aus dem interplanetaren Raum, 1988. It is the only comprehensive book on
meteorites in German that can compare with O.R. Norton's books.

> Heinlein, Dieter 2003 Gotterboten Feuer vom Himmel. by Volkssternwarte
> Laupheim e. V Softcover, 25 pp.

.. and, of course, Dieter's recent booklet on the Neuschwanstein meteorite:

Die Feuerkugel vom 6. April 2002 und der sensationelle Meteoritenfall
Neuschwanstein

Another meteorite booklet for the beginning collector in German is/was Heide's
book:

F. Heide, Kleine Meteoritenkunde, 2nd edn., 1957, pp. 142.
F. Heide, Kleine Meteoritenkunde, 3rd edn., 1988, pp. 188.*

Re: [meteorite-list] ** French meteorite book/German books

2004-12-09 Thread meteoriteplaya
Hi Martin
You are actually quite fortunate that there are several books on general
knowledge of meteorites written in German. I have several of these books in my
collection including;

Carion, Alain translated by Bernd Pauli 1996 Meteorite. Published by the
author, Paris, France. German language 1st edition. Soft cover, 40 pp.

Heinlein, Dieter 2003 Gotterboten Feuer vom Himmel. by Volkssternwarte Laupheim
e. V Softcover, 25 pp.

Retyi, Andreas von and Aumann, Georg 1996 Meteorite - Boten aus dem. Weltall
Naturkunde-Museum Coburg Softcover 116 pp.

Schlüter, Jochen 1996 Steine des Himmels: Meteorite. Ellert and Richter,
Hamburg, Germany, Soft cover 123 pp.

Warth, Manfred and Reiff, Winfried 1992 Meteorite und Meteoritekrater. by
Stuttgarter Beitrage zur Naturkunde. Softcover , 47 pp.

I'm sure there are others. All are available from various sources. I can let
you know who to purchase them from if you need it. Don't forget lots of other
languages have even fewer available. I don't have any Italian language books in
my collection as well as numerous others.
I don't know of any that are specific to German meteorites by location but
there are a couple of excellent web sites that cover the topic very well. Here
is a good one

Re: [meteorite-list] ** French meteorite book : forthcoming release ! **

2004-12-09 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello Martin,

I hope everyone will enjoy my book. It was a very long
work to write it (2 years).

It was read by scientists and known meteorite
collectors (Alain Carion / Claude Perron, MNHN Paris
 / Pierre Rochette, CEREGE-CNRS) so there shouldn't
have any error. Also thanks to Alain Carion who made
the preface.

For an autographed copy, I can already announce that
I'll have a table at the Ensisheim Show 2005 so
everyone one can meet me and have an autographed copy
there !

Regards,

Pierre-Marie

Congrats.

A comprehensive book about German meteorites as well as good book in German
about meteorites in general,
is missing.

Best, but not available anymore, is still Rolf W.Buehler's: Meteorite -
Urmaterie aus dem interplanetaren Raum, 1988.

George H. Diller
Kennedy Space Center, Fla.

12.09.04
STATUS REPORT: ELV-120904

EXPENDABLE LAUNCH VEHICLES STATUS REPORT

MISSION: Deep Impact
LAUNCH VEHICLE: Delta II 7925
LAUNCH PAD: Pad 17-B Cape Canaveral Air Force Station
LAUNCH DATE: Jan. 8, 2005
LAUNCH WINDOW: 1:39:50 and 2:19:12 p.m. EST instantaneous

In processing activities at the Astrotech Space Operations facility
located near Kennedy Space Center, the high-gain antenna used for Deep
Impact communications with Earth is being installed today. The solar
array panels successfully completed an illumination test on Wednesday as
a final check of their performance. On Friday, Dec. 10, the flight
battery will be installed. The solar arrays stowed for flight on Dec.
13. Deep Impact will then be ready to begin preparations for fueling,
which is scheduled to start on Dec. 16 and be completed on Dec. 19.
Mating to the payload attach fitting and upper stage booster occurs Dec.
22 - 23.

The spacecraft is currently scheduled to be transported to Pad 17-B on
Dec. 28 and mated to the Boeing Delta II rocket. The Flight Program
Verification, the major integrated test with the Delta II, occurs on
Dec. 30. The Delta II payload fairing will be installed around the Deep
Impact spacecraft on Jan. 4.

NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft arrived in Florida on Oct. 23 to begin
final preparations for launch. The spacecraft was shipped from Ball
Aerospace & Technologies in Boulder, Colo., to Astrotech in Titusville.

Meanwhile, the stacking of the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle on Pad
17-B began on Nov. 22 with the hoisting of the first stage into the
launcher. Hoisting of the nine strap-on solid rocket boosters, in sets
of three, began with the first set on Nov. 23 and the second on Nov 29.
The last set was installed on the vehicle on Dec. 1. The second stage
was hoisted into position atop the first stage on Dec. 3. The payload
fairing was hoisted and stowed in the mobile service tower on Dec. 6.
The first power-on test occurred Dec. 7.

The next event is the vehicle guidance and control system check, which
occurs on Dec. 13. The loading of liquid oxygen aboard the first stage
for a leak check and a countdown launch team certification exercise is
scheduled to occur on Dec. 14. The Flight Simulation, a plus count that
exercises all of the systems on the vehicle as they will occur during
powered flight, is scheduled for Dec. 15.

The overall Deep Impact mission management for this Discovery class
program is conducted by the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
Deep Impact project management is handled by the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The spacecraft was built for NASA by Ball
Aerospace and Technologies Corporation.

But if it does remind you of a real counterpart, then this is

[meteorite-list] Mars Express Images: The Channels of Reull Valli

2004-12-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.esa.int/export/SPECIALS/Mars_Express/SEM1EQWDE2E_0.html

The channels of Reull Vallis
European Space Agency
Mars Express
7 December 2004

These images, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board
ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, show a region of Reull Vallis in the
southern hemisphere of Mars.

Map showing Reull Vallis in context

The images show an area located at about latitude 42° South and
longitude 102° East. The image was taken with a ground resolution of
about 21 metres per pixel during Mars Express orbit 451 in May 2004.

Reull Vallis is an outflow channel that extends 1500 kilometres across
Promethei Terra in the direction of Hellas Basin. It is approximately 20
kilometres wide and has cut into the surrounding plain to a depth of
1800 metres. It is the major outflow channel in the region and exhibits
a high degree of surface modification, suggesting a complex evolution.

Reull Vallis in colour

In these images, Reull Vallis extends from the east to the north-west
and is connected to a tributary in the south (Teviot Vallis). Distinct
parallel structures are visible in the channels, possibly caused by
glacial flow of loose debris mixed with ice. Small depressions, located
on the flow features, are probably caused by the sublimation of ice.

Numerous impact craters, visible on the flanks of the valley, have been
filled with material from these flows. Distinct flow features can be
recognised within impact craters, for example, the 15-kilometre wide
crater in the west (bottom) of the image.

3D anaglyph of Reull Vallis

There is a clear morphological distinction between the heavily eroded
south-west and the plains of the north-east, which have experienced much
less erosion. While most landforms throughout the image have a rounded,
softened appearance, younger structures have a distinctly sharp and
raised morphology.

Reull Vallis detail 1

On the southern and western edges of the colour image, large impact
craters are visible. Their diameters range from 15 to 35 kilometres.
These craters have heavily eroded rims and are partly filled with
material. Erosion has left distinct, branched gully systems at the edge
of the large crater that is located on the southern edge of the image.

Perspective view of Reull Vallis, looking west

Image resolution has been decreased for use on the internet. The colour
images were processed using the HRSC nadir (vertical view) and three
colour channels. The perspective views were calculated from the digital
terrain model derived from the stereo channels.

The 3D anaglyph image was created from the nadir channel and one of the
stereo channels. Stereoscopic glasses are needed to view the 3D image.

Dec. 6th)

http://taree.yourguide.com.au/detail.asp?class=news&subclass=local&category=general%20news&story_id=356075&y=2004&m=12
A curious find
Wednesday, 8 December 2004
"I THINK I might have a few pieces of the meteorite."
An excited Dianne Slaven contacted the Times yesterday morning, after she
and her sons collected
some curiosities in their Wingham yard.

"I remembered kicking this black rock off the path. It wasn't until I went
to squash last night that
I heard people talking about what had happened.

"When I went home I again found the rock, and the kids found two more on the
lawn."

The fragments have all the telltale signs of coming from anywhere but local.
They are misshapen, and leave sooty marks on your hands.
The largest measures about 10cms, the smallest is about 5cm.
They weren't embedded in the ground, as one would expect if they had hurtled
from the sky after
Monday morning's meteor 'explosion' over the Manning.

Dianne and her sons admit to sleeping through the commotion which woke most
Manning residents
shortly after 4.15am.

Yesterday, the Times had a local amateur astronomer, Peter Langdown, check
the pieces the family
collected.

Peter told Dianne he believed the pieces could possibly be from a meteor and
has recommended she get
in touch with the Sydney Observatory, which will conduct tests to determine
their origin.

Even if they can't be authenticated, young Mitchell (10), Reece (eight) and
Jai (five) will
certainly have something interesting to take to 'show and tell' at Wingham
Public School.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA supply slowing?

2004-12-09 Thread S. Ralew
Hi Jamie, Bill, Bernhard and List,

yes, I also think that most of the interesting NWA-Meteorites are outside
Morocco and wait for a definite classification. I for example wait already
longer than a year for some classifications of rare pieces. The more unusual
the pieces are, the longer the classification lasts. Some interesting
Meteorite will come onto the market again and again in future. In my
experience the Moroccans hold little material back. Mostly, they immediately
take everything they have on the market. After my observation there are a
few signs for a near end of the nwa flood. On my last Morocco tour in Oct
2004 I have seen hardly any interesting material. The beautiful black desert
chondrites also have become very rare. And the prices are partly very high.
Some people in Morocco think that they are millionaires because they own a
500 g NWA869. ;-) Because of the high travelling expenses you can make
probably better deals on the big mineral shows than in Marocco at the
moment.

But Morocco is still a very beautiful country for me. The people there are
kind, tolerant and helpful mostly.
And, there must be an air corridor for meteorites. Bensour, Amgala and now
Benguerir - this pieces are great! Where can get you an absolutely fresh
fall for $3 - $6/ gm otherwise??

Best regards,
Stefan

that part of the world must be pretty motivated to find and sell as fast as
they can. Highly motivated to put forth a LOT of effort to round up
everything they can. Ask any homeless person in the US or anywhere. Do you
think they stockpile their aluminum cans waiting for prices to go up?

Hi Mike and all,
Yesterday I was offered 5.5 kilos at 24 Dirhams (roughly $3.00) per gram
and I turned it down as something smelled bad with the urgency of the deal.
That, and the pieces were broken and large, perfect for cutting however. I
would have jumped if they were small individuals.

Take care,

I was just 5 minutes ago offered 3 kilograms of pieces and individuals at
35 dirhams per gram, just over $4 gram, and I turned that down.
The flood of this material is coming, just one week ago it was $10 gram
and virtually nothing was available.
Patience people, it will be available and cheap in a few more weeks.

similar to Bensour, i hope only this is not a fake fall where the moroccan

It's really refreshing to see that other nationalities are so hateful of each
other among their own. It relieves a lot of stress, in my mind, that is so
often directed at us poor old Americans. It kind of makes me feel genuinely
international. Let the courts decide. Forget the paranoia and the Pellisons. If
the world courts can't see how ignorant it is, we should all become vegetable
farmers. I love my vegetable garden so I'm biased and don't care either way.

[meteorite-list] Pellissons, the truth about their lies

2004-12-09 Thread The Earth's Memory
Dear List Members,

as you can read the Pellison will never assume their acts.
We can give you their answers without doubts as we have their attorney
statements and all the documents in hands:

1) Did you use names and parts of private mails out of context to try to
convict the Judge
that meteorites have a link with Al Queda ?
- "Yes we did, the list of names that Bruno & Carine provide you have been
involved
front of the Lyon's Court as supporters of terrorism." (list still available
at the end of this mail)

2) -"Yes, the next day we have been sentenced we sent two documents totaling
64 pages
to all the medias, Institutions and Ministers, in these documents, false
statements and letters; In this way
we did try to show that scientists are corrupt and get money from NWA
dealers to
launder meteorites and meteorites funding."

3) Did you contact the Interior's Minister and Court des Comptes as well as
 Customs offices ?
-"Yes, we did , we are stating (word to word) in all our documents, the
whole list of rare NWA
as well as people names have been transmitted."

4) did you declared in a big French's newspaper that BIN LADEN IN PERSON
came to Morocco
to fix the details of the meteorite business ?
-"Yes, we did , do you want to read it ?"

5) what else did you do that will hurt the others in the future ?
-"Well, this you will ALL discover soon, as it's a surprise
we can't tell you now, surprises are always so sweet."

So this is what we can tell from their written declarations. All these
officials papers
will be at the Inn Suites in Tucson. Pass by, have a look, make your own
idea of the
danger. As some of you wrote us: we all have to wake up and see the
IMMENSITY
of the potential negative results of the actions of the Pellissons. This is
the first time in
meteorites history that a threat between two parts (and we didn't begin
anything as we
don't mind about other's stories as far as they don't attack us) will have
hard consequences
for everybody.

Pelisons, we already ship our material, it's in storage in Tucson, don't
waste your time
to send pictures and lists to Ministers and Customs. We already have been
investigated in all
ways even by tax people we are 100% fed up by your madness. Go back to
Libya to
steel other's ellipses (as you did for the German's CO3 and AEUC-P).
It's not the other's
fault if you never found something of interest and you have to understand
that the
scientists are fine with NWA specimens, it's the first time in history that
so much affordable
specimens are available for science, it will grow up Human Beeing's
knowledge.

To establish the Truth,

Bruno & Carine

PS: we are leaving to Japan Tuesday so Mrss if you have anything to say do
it now
and not like you did three times in the past (cf last Tucson show), a knife
in the back is not fair.
