Re: [meteorite-list] chondrules?
Dear chondritists; I thought I would chime in a moment. Our oolites that are calcium carbonate acretions have layering and concentric structures. After the silica replaces the calcium carbonate, they are quite interesting, hard and worthy of thin slice work. Dave F. Norman Lehrman wrote: Gerald, Tracy & list, Sorry for the slow reply. I'm out in the field, and probably have no business responding anyway, but your question is an interesting one. I have worked with lots of accretionary lapilli in volcanic settings all over the world. Like Tracy said, I also know of no chondrules with truly equivalent concentric structure. However, the general idea of accretionary dust-balls and condensates in the solar nebula is appealing. What we would need to do to make the resulting sphereoids match observations is recrystallization by one means or another. Many chondrules consist of single minerals. It might even make sense for some of the armoring that we see to result from misfit impurities being expelled from the growing crystal to its exterior rim. Understand that my comments are a gross speculation based on terrestrial knowledge. I have virtually no familiarity with published chondrule research, so I'm sure there are others on the list that can offer better answers. ON THE ORIGIN OF CHONDRULES Norm and List, Please excuse my ignorance for putting forth this question but as a relative "newbe" to meteorite collecting, I hope you will entitle me to this query. I came across the term "accretionary lapilli" also called "volcanic pisolites" in Dorothy Ferris Lapidus 1987 edition of "The Facts on File Dictionary of Geology and Geophysics. If you bear with me I'll quote " these are shperoidal concentrically layered pellets composed mainly of vitric dust and ash, usually between 2 and 10 mm in diameter. They are formed primarily through the accretion of ash and dust by condensed moisture in eruption clouds. Formless nuclei of coarse particles fall through the fine debris and acquire shells of progressively finer ash. These concentric shells indicate the increasiing temperature and decreasing humidity of the cloud at lower levels. My question is, does the process described above provide any anology("something similar but different") to the origin of chondrules. A solar nebula is obviously different than a volcano but is there any analagous sympatico to the spheroidal shape? I've seen neither a macro nor micro view of a cross-section of a chondrule so I can't speak to the issue of concentric layering. Please excuse this question if it either "offers a keen grasp of the obvious" or is so "out of the ballpark", "continent", "planet", "sun (star) system", "gallaxy" (that's as limiting as my current unaided memory allows my imagination to propel itself). Re: [meteorite-list] New Arizona Meteorite!
I can't say this with any definiteness, but I don't believe any "new" (i.e., unweathered) chondrules show signs of concentric layering, only ones that have been exposed to Earth's atmosphere and have suffered degradation from moisture. I can't point to any example I have seen that shows anything like growth rings that have definitely formed outside Earth conditions; they all imply forming at once, rather than in successive buildups. This completely ignores the question of armored chondrules, however. Re: [meteorite-list] Lost packages and other selling thoughts
Dear List, John, Rob; I sell on ebay as you all know. I require insurance and delivery confirmation on all of my auctions. In the past, I have had three jokers try to get something for nothing and that is why the required delivery confirmation, and the postal system has lost and destroyed a half dozen shipments/ heavy boxes of rocks and thus the insurance. I have found that the el-cheap-o bidders that do not want insurance and delivery confirmation can go to the cut throat sellers and that is fine. The time spent trying to make a bidder that wants something for nothing happy is never made up for anyway. Another issue is the payment method. I only take paypal these days as the money order and check only wastes time and time is money. Great buyers have paypal and great buyers do like insurance and delivery confirmation. 38% of my ebay business is from repeat customers. Repeat customers get special treatment and free stuff (and free shipping for the free stuff!). That time saved by only selling to the better level customers is applied to ferret out better quality and more interesting items for my great customers. Another tip: sell things to those that have more money than you do(of course that leaves a great deal of lee-way in my case). Best, Dave F. mjwy on ebay! 100% positive feed back and over 800 auctions completed. JKGwilliam wrote: I guess what it all boils down to is you have to decide if you're a business man whose goal is to make a profit (and develop happy customers in the process), or if you're goal is to turn over merchandise whether or not you make a profit. If you decide to be a businessman, you should take the proper steps to protect yourself financially by requiring insurance and tracking on every package you ship. If a customer elects to not pay for insurance, he can purchase his goods somewhere else or give you a statement in writing that he won't hold you liable for items lost during shipping. In the case of the latter, you will probably loose the customer anyway because any customer that looses money is an unhappy customer. Re: [meteorite-list] Lost packages
I guess what it all boils down to is you have to decide if you're a business man whose goal is to make a profit (and develop happy customers in the process), or if you're goal is to turn over merchandise whether or not you make a profit. There's one dealer I'm aware of that offers FREE shipping if you buy a certain $$ amount of specimens from him. He must be crazy, right? Yeah, crazy like a fox. [meteorite-list] Re: New Meteorite Books
Hi All Just wanted to let everyone know about two new meteorite books. First is a new Cambridge title "The Origin of Chondrules and Chondrites". It is by Derek Sears. I have included a summary of the book from their web site. "Drawing on research from the various scientific disciplines involved, this text summarizes the origin and history of chondrules and chondrites. Including citations to every published paper on the topic, it forms a comprehensive bibliography of the latest research. In addition, extensive illustrations provide a clear visual representation of the scientific theories. The text will be a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers in planetary science, geology and astronomy." The website has several pdf documents of portions of the book at: http://us.cambridge.org/titles/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521836034 The list price is $110 but we will sell for $95 for a limited time. Shipping should be less than $5 in the USA. I will quote exact prices to USA and overseas when I have copies of the book. That should be within two weeks. Please order by this weekend. The last book is the previously offered book "Meteorites a Chemical and Petrologic Synthesis" by Hutchison. List is $135. We will sell for $115 plus shipping. This has become one of my favorite books on meteorites. I have heard back from several others who took advantage of our earlier offer as well and the response has been great. The book is quite technical in nature but it is a great way to dig deeper into an understanding of meteorites. The first printing of the book was sold out and additional copies should be available in March. Highly recommended. RE: [meteorite-list] Michael Cottingham
I have bought more than two dozen things from Michael over the past 18 months. Every single shipments of him has reached me, although it sometimes took much longer than other shipments I bought at the same time. Michael, to my best knowledge, is a honest person. Sometimes he seems to be unorganized or lazy - but hey, that's only human and I can live with that. Hi All Here are some neat fragments that I picked up in Tucson of the fall near Ben Guerir, Morocco on Nov. 22, 2004. It looks like 30-40 kg were recovered but most went to the government. The fall is near a military base which quickly moved in and confiscated most of the pieces that were recovered. This is also the first meteorite classified in Morocco. It has been classified LL6. All of these pieces are fresh showing a light interior with tiny metal flecks. Please note the name is only proposed at this time. Re: [meteorite-list] Lost packages
Bob, It's too bad that you didn't save the stub (receipt) form the money order. I've had two different people (both list members) claim that they never received money orders from me. With the help of the numbers on the money order receipt, I was able to submit a claim and get a refund for one of them although it took 8 weeks. The other money order in question was for almost $400 and the USPS ended up sending me photocopies of the front and the back of the document where the endorsement signature of the person was in black and white. He changed his story about not receiving the money order when I sent him a copy showing where he had signed. Remember to keep the stub or receipt for money orders. Re: [meteorite-list] Lost packages
Michael, I had the same thing happen several times a few years ago and here's what I do now to avoid a problem. The customer has a choice of some options. One is that the contents of the package are declared at full value and the customs label is marked accordingly. If the package gets lost or stolen, insurance can at least replace the money involved. Or, the buyer can send me a letter (email will work too) stating that they want it declared as "scientific material for study only" or some other description that the buyer feels will keep him from having to pay duty. They must also agree in writing that they accept ALL responsibility for the safe delivery of the package. BTW, can anyone tell me where all of these packages end up if they're not delivered! [meteorite-list] Information for wholesale buyers, museums/scientific institutions and serious collectors
Good morning, day, evening. To all Meteorite List members! To see the variety of Irghizites please look at the http://android.omskreg.ru/1/ This is about 1/30 of what I have. There are possibility to "compose" collections of tektites- Irghizites by: 1. Two groups which unites four types by morphological characteristics- form of Irghizite and condition if it's surface (brilliant, weathered). 2. To create collection by chemical composition of Irghizites (acid, basic), includes all morphological types and subtypes, described higher. In that case somebody has not only detail description of each sample, but raster electronic micro photos of each sample's surface, Results of petrographical analysis of each sample (photos of slices in polarized light included). In other words it will be museum/scientific institution class collection with fullest description. To bring fully understanding of what I can suggest to You/Your organization please write on my e-mail. I will ready to answer on all questions which attracts your interest. Re: [meteorite-list] European lost orders
>This seller obviously tried to safe money on the wrong side The seller or the buyer? One should always clear before, who will bear the risk and the mode of shipping. Hardly a buyer, my experience, is willing to pay the extra fees for fully insured shipment. Don't we have frequently the shipping-cost-rip-off-theme playing here on the list? In fact, I'm paying in most cases the extra costs by my own, as german post is the most expensive on Earth and I simply couldn't compete with US-sellers on ebay, as especially with small specimens, the bidder would be repelles by high ship costs, but in general I would suggest: Sent with out xtra options: Buyer takes the risk Sent registered: Buyer get's back the offered refund by the carrier Sent with insurance: Seller takes the risk. (and buyer the risk to pay the customs). If I buy a valuable specimen, I'd explicitely ask the seller to sent it with insurance, if I don't know the seller or it's from a country, wherefrom often smth get lost, I'd ask to sent it registered, if it's not an expensive specimen or if I'm scrooge, I let sent it without any extra option and if it's lost, it's bad luck and I won't complain. [meteorite-list] Re: OT: chargebacks & Lost packages (kind of long - sorry) :-)
Hi list, a good opportunity for án important and precious hint for European sellers, who use Paypal for Ebay transactions: Never let your money on your Paypal account, withdraw it always immediately onto your bank account If a buyer claims at Paypal, that your item didn't arrive or that you didn't sent it, Paypal will charge back his payment + hefty fees from your account without any examination of that case! And also it is written in the ebay/paypal-instructions that they will accept as a proof your receipt, that you sent it registered, they won't do. Not from DHL, nor from UPS, nor Fedex, even not if you can track back, that the parcel was delivered to the very address and the buyer got his stuff. They will tell you, that they accept only methods of shipping, were at each moment the very whereabouts od the parcel can be tracked, which is possible only with special courier services (which costs about 100-200Euro to USA). Paypal is known to act completely illegal here in Europe, to me it didn't happened, but a short look in the ebay discussion forums and you'll find dozens of cases. If your account is empty, anyway they will take the chargeback from there, but that doesn't matter, as the mafia-style harassements they will attack you later with, that an encashment enterprise will visit you, are not conform with german law and they won't take the risk of litigation. Meanwhile there exist professional fraudsters in USA, who know about that Paypal behaviour and that the seller has no chance, as all proofs of delivery won't be accepted, who are ordering items in bulk, paying them first with paypal and after they recieved the goods, they claimed, that they never got it and get the chargeback of the money, so that you'll loose your goods, your money and for this you have to pay additional a fat fee. In USA Paypal is more careful, as the amendments there with class-actions lawsuits are high and there they offer a sellers' protection program, which is not available. Unfortunately paypal is the most popular mode of payment for international ebay transactions, otherwise I would strongly recommend to switch to Bidpay or other electronical money transfer services. Another occurence, to demonstrate, how Paypal is acting, and which afflicted thousands of German Paypal clients, was the illegal account blocking and frightening of the clients, that they are under investigations and suspected to be criminals: European laws commit banks and money services to check the identity of a client, before he/she opens an account, by identity card, passport or electonical signature. A lot of Germans opened a Paypal-account, when Paypal wasn't available in Europe, in USA and there wasn't any other verification necessary than the credit card. Now Paypal was going to the European market and thus subdued to the European laws. What did they do, to get the missing data of their clients? They sent emails to all of them, that they found strange transactions on their accounts and/or that soon the sum of all transactions will exceed 7500Euro, so that they are compelled by the EU-money-washing-law to check the identity of the client. For this you should fax a copy of your identity card or an attestation of your registry office, wherefrom your address is visible as well as a bill from your electric current supplier. Of course I didn't and then they blocked the account (also illegally and this they did with all, who refused). So I took a look in that mentioned EU-money-washing-law, and what did I found? The bank has to proof suspicious transactions, if it exceeds a value of 15.000Euro (not 7500 as paypal told) and only if it was made as one single payment or in form of payments from the same sender in a short period of time (practise is: 1 week - 10 days). Thus not, as Paypal wrote in their scary emails, that the sum of all transactions made from the beginning on - in my case 2 years! - exceeds that limit. And in the law also you could find, that for verification are allowed only identity card, passport or electronical signature - no matter whether they contain the home address or not. A bill of the electrical supplier or the sheet of the registration office, thus would be not valuable for that purpose. As I heard in the forums, that for most it took weeks or even months to get cleared their accounts again, I wrote to Paypal, that I will inform the banking supervision about their practises if they won't clear my account immediately - and voila in 20 minutes it was done. That's Paypal. Failed to collect the necessary data from the clients, they are threatening their own clients to press out the data, using simple lies, forgering the law to get the data quickly in scaring the clients to be suspected to have commited a crime - blocking their money, if they don't agree. So, if you're forced to use Paypal, always withdraw your funds immediately. Cheers! Martin __ Meteorite-list mailing li
Re: [meteorite-list] Lost packages
You're happy enough to be able to send your meteorites insured. Here at german normal post (now DHL) meteorites are excluded from any insurance (like gems, pearls, amber) and with the general insurance on a parcel of 500Euro or xtra safe with 25.000Euro, you'll get back the shipping costs and around 10Euro per kilogram according to a post treaty from 50 years ago, thus not even sufficient to send some stinky Campos. Fedex and UPS refuse to insure meteorites here. One firm exist, where it's possible, somebody told me, I forgot the name, but the problem is, that with their shipment costs one can't compete with sellers from US and the clients would accuse you of a rip-off. - Original Message - From: "stan ." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Monday, February 14, 2005 7:04 AM Subject: RE: [meteorite-list] Lost packages > > > >Let's get something strait now.
