[meteorite-list] Virgin Mary meteorite/anyone good at reading spectra?
So that "Virgin Mary" meteorite is back on Ebay, and this time the seller has including a picture of a card with what appears to be the results of some sort of spectroscopic analysis of the piece. Anyone know what kind of 'wrong it is from the card, just for curiosity's sake? Its showing up strong for Oxygen and Iron, but I don't see any nickel on the card. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6155546569 __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Alright folks, back to meteorites. To the point, short and sweet: I have been looking for quite some time now for a part-slice of Zagami ~2g or under, preferably with a hint of fusion crust. Hi Mark and List, > ... To get back on track, does anybody have any meteorite hunting > trips planned this weekend?? If the weather lets me, I hope to make a day-trip into the Mojave at some point over the 3-day weekend. If I believed the weather reports from yesterday, I'd have written off the weekend. But now the local news "meteorologists" (if you can call them that) have backed off on their pineapple express 3-days-of-rain storm warnings for southern California, so a trip may be back in the works. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] First meteorites
Hello List, I'm just a little fish here on the meteorite food chain, but I do have a story. Last month I spent the weekend at the Franconia Strewn Field and found my first two meteorites - 4 gm and 51 gm. They were small but what a rush! I did have a chance to stop at the Tucson show ever so briefly enroute to Sierra Vista. I had to have a look at Mike Farmer's lunar. Very impressive. Hopefully next year I can spend much more time at the show. Adios. Why? To look like a BIG DOG! Certainly something that I am not, and don't pretend to be. On and on and on. Who gives a rat's rear? Why do you have to have a new PC to post pictures? It certainly hasn't curtailed your ability to pummel us with emails about all your "glorious acquisitions" that you will certainly never part with. Why do you post stuff like that? What if everyone that attended Tucson posted what they bought at the show? What if I posted everytime I (or someone I know) found a "bunny-turd" Holbrook, Franconia, or Gold Basin meteorite? We used to post our joint Holbrook and other hunts as a story, but it became "bandwidth dribble" so we stopped. Who cares? Absolutely no one! C'mon Steve! Hello List, I posted a question about a strange (to me) inclusion to the list a few days back and got one reply. I post a meteor wrong on ebay to the list and get countless negative replies. People want this list to stay meteorite related, but won't respond to meteorite related posts, I think something is wrong with that! The point is, if I can not use the list to learn , but only a place to get chewed out, then it is not worth it. Apparently my posts are just to offensive to some, judging from the hate mail and loss of friends, so I will be a lurker for now on, I don't want to risk losing any more. : ) Sorry to all I offended. Re: [meteorite-list] Great News
Hi Geoff and List, Yes, this is very good news. Completely unexpected on my part but I for one am very pleased to hear this. It is one thing to be so delusional to think that the scientific community has nothing better to do with their time than to dream up conspiracy theories, but is it another thing to practice defamation against a member of said community. And it is another thing altogether to allow it to happen when one has the power to stop it. As for Dr. Ehlmann, I have nothing but kind words. Back when I was making micromounts, Art sold me some material from TCU which was perfect for making micromounts. I recently aquired an ex-Monnig half-stone of Dimmit and Art assisted me just just this past weekend with some questions I had regarding the piece. Besides, since we all agree that what they have are not even meteorites, that alone is worth questioning their continued participation. I mean, this is a list about meteorites, is it not? Thank you very much, Art. -Walter - - Original Message - From: "Notkin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Meteorite List" Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 10:34 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Great News > Dear Listees: > > I have just heard from our List Moderator Art Jones, and I am delighted > to be able to inform you that S. Re: [meteorite-list] new computer
Dear Johnny G, I have a four year old dinosaur named 4300,and it is a large leap above steves state of the art doo-dad. My back up lap top: a secret! Dave F. Maybe steve could brag up something meteorite related.. The Dell Dimension 3000 is an entry level machine and can't be called "state of the art" by any stretch of the imagination. Dell describes the 3000 as the "Ultimate Value Desktop" and is second from the bottom of the line of eleven (11) desktop machines. The person you ordered your computer from must have given you some incorrect information. Here at our house, my eleven year old daughter has a Dimension 4700 with dual hard drives, extra SDRAM, a Pioneer DVD-R burner, etc. It's two steps up from you machine and it isn't even close to being "state of the art." Best, John Gwilliam Oh...one more thing. Nancy (my wife) remembers meeting BH about 10 years ago and she said that the way she would describe him could be translated to "BH is one hot dude!" if she were still thirty years old, but for a fifty year old guy to say that is welldisgusting and very embarrassing. Meteorite List, First of all, I apologize to the List for the following: I don't know about the rest of you, but I've finally reached my limit of Steve Arnold's (Big Windy) non-stop bragging and blathering. So, get angry with me if you want or send me emails condemning my behavior, but I've had enough and I have to vent a little here. steve, steve, steve, steve, steveI don't know what Dell catalog you ordered from, but since the Gwilliams are a "Dell only" family( we have five Dells), I can clear up any confusion you might be experiencing. Well said Geoff, These guys are as crazy as they come. Pretty sad when every university you send your junk to tells you it isn't a meteorite, and you get more and more angry and spiteful that you resort to defaming people like Art Ehlmann. [meteorite-list] Cassini's Radar Spots Giant Crater on Titan
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2005-029 MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION PASADENA, CALIF. 91109 TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov Carolina Martinez (818) 354-9382 Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. News Release: 2005-029 February 16, 2005 Cassini's Radar Spots Giant Crater on Titan A giant impact crater the size of Iowa was spotted on Saturn's moon Titan by NASA's Cassini radar instrument during Tuesday's Titan flyby. Cassini flew within 1,577 kilometers (980 miles) of Titan's surface and its radar instrument took detailed images of the surface. This is the third close Titan flyby of the mission, which began in July 2004, and only the second time the radar instrument has examined Titan. Scientists see some things that look familiar, along with scenes that are completely new. The new radar images are available at: http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://www.nasa.gov/cassini . "It's reassuring to look at two parts of Titan and see similar things," said Dr. Jonathan Lunine, Cassini interdisciplinary scientist from the University of Arizona, Tucson. "At the same time, there are new and strange things." This flyby is the first time that Cassini's radar and the imaging camera overlapped. This overlap in coverage should be able to provide more information about the surface features than either technique alone. The 440-kilometer-wide (273-mile) crater identified by the radar instrument was seen before with Cassini's imaging cameras, but not in this detail. A second radar image released today shows features nicknamed "cat scratches". These parallel linear features are intriguing, and may be formed by winds, like sand dunes, or by other geological processes. On Thursday, Cassini will conduct its first close flyby of Saturn's icy moon Enceladus (en-SELL-uh-duss) at a distance of approximately 1,180 kilometers (730 miles). Enceladus is one of the most reflective objects in the solar system, so bright that its surface resembles freshly fallen snow. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. You bring up a good point Mark. Maybe the BD Boyz should open the Harvey Awards to a nomination and voting system like the Soggy Bottom Scientists mentioned in their post. It has everything to do with how you present yourself as a credible source. For example if the "National Inquirer" tabloid says "Martian Rock is Alive" vs. a joint research team of NASA and other scientists from the Johnson Space Center and Stanford University, announcing "Meteorite yields evidence of primitive life on early Mars", it makes a big difference. Extrapolation can be dangerous in these circumstances and counterproductive to science and rational enthusiasts. And some of us don't like receiving unsolicited email calling us, with the click of your enter key, and whether sarcastically, or not, all idiots. So if you really want to help your 'friend', as opposed to just create an attention or pick a fight, you could try the tact of supporting your claims in an unbiased manner in conversation rather than expecting someone to believe whatever you say. Give him the IMCA.cc website, refer him to the Nortons' books, tell him o look up "Holbrook Arizona" on the internet, or the NASA pages on Mars rocks, an online link to the Smithsonian meteorite collection description, British Museum's, TCU's, ASU's etc. etc. The "Grasshopper, we have much work to do." strategy probably will make more progress here vs. the "Your mama wears army boots and it's because I said so." strategy. [meteorite-list] NASA Researchers Claim Evidence of Present Life on Mars
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mars_life_050216.html NASA Researchers Claim Evidence of Present Life on Mars By Brian Berger Space News 16 February 2005 WASHINGTON -- A pair of NASA scientists told a group of space officials at a private meeting here Sunday that they have found strong evidence that life may exist today on Mars, hidden away in caves and sustained by pockets of water. The scientists, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke of NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, told the group that they have submitted their findings to the journal Nature for publication in May, and their paper currently is being peer reviewed. What Stoker and Lemke have found, according to several attendees of the private meeting, is not direct proof of life on Mars, but methane signatures and other signs of possible biological activity remarkably similar to those recently discovered in caves here on Earth. Stoker and other researchers have long theorized that the Martian subsurface could harbor biological organisms that have developed unusual strategies for existing in extreme environments. That suspicion led Stoker and a team of U.S. and Spanish researchers in 2003 to southwestern Spain to search for subsurface life near the Rio Tinto river - so-called because of its reddish tint - the product of iron being dissolved in its highly acidic water. Stoker did not respond to messages left Tuesday on her voice mail at Ames. Stoker told SPACE.com in 2003, weeks before leading the expedition to southwestern Spain, that by studying the very acidic Rio Tinto, she and other scientists hoped to characterize the potential for a "chemical bioreactor" in the subsurface - an underground microbial ecosystem of sorts that might well control the chemistry of the surface environment. Making such a discovery at Rio Tinto, Stoker said in 2003, would mean uncovering a new, previously uncharacterized metabolic strategy for living in the subsurface. "For that reason, the search for life in the Rio Tinto is a good analog for searching for life on Mars," she said. Stoker told her private audience Sunday evening that by comparing discoveries made at Rio Tinto with data collected by ground-based telescopes and orbiting spacecraft, including the European Space Agency's Mars Express, she and Lemke have made a very a strong case that life exists below Mars' surface. The two scientists, according to sources at the Sunday meeting, based their case in part on Mars' fluctuating methane signatures that could be a sign of an active underground biosphere and nearby surface concentrations of the sulfate jarosite, a mineral salt found on Earth in hot springs and other acidic bodies of water like Rio Tinto that have been found to harbor life despite their inhospitable environments. One of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers, Opportunity, bolstered the case for water on Mars when it discovered jarosite and other mineral salts on a rocky outcropping in Merdiani Planum, the intrepid rover's landing site chosen because scientists believe the area was once covered by salty sea. Stoker and Lemke's research could lead the search for Martian biology underground, where standing water would help account the curious methane signatures the two have been analyzing. "They are desperate to find out what could be producing the methane," one attendee told Space News. "Their answer is drill, drill, drill." NASA has no firm plans for sending a drill-equipped lander to Mars, but the agency is planning to launch a powerful new rover in 2009 that could help shed additional light on Stoker and Lemke's intriguing findings. Dubbed the Mars Science Laboratory, the nuclear-powered rover will range farther than any of its predecessors and will be carrying an advanced mass spectrometer to sniff out methane with greater sensitivity than any instrument flown to date. In 1996 a team of NASA and Stanford University researchers created a stir when they published findings that meteorites recovered from the Allen Hills region of Antarctica contained evidence of possible past life on Mars. Those findings remain controversial, with many researchers unconvinced that those meteorites held even possible evidence that very primitive microbial life had once existed on Mars. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] we are all idiots!
Hi List, a little story; I like to share the world of meteorites with people, like I am sure all of us do. I showed a meteorite to a guy who graduated college with a 4.0 gpa. He asked me why I "thought" it was a meteorite. I explained fusion crust, the chondrules and Nickel and such, but he refused to believe it was a meteorite! Then he asked me where I got it, I told him I bought it on ebay, then the S*^$ hit the fan! He said "your an f#ing idiot, someone puts a rock on ebay and calls it a meteorite and you bought it" I then explained the meteorite market and that ebay is one of the best markets for meteorites. He responded, "then your all a bunch of idiots, all my schooling was pointless, I can make more money off all the stupid people in this world, I will sell rocks on ebay as meteorites too, if people like you will buy them! Have you ever ran into people like this? I am sure he is not the only one. I wonder how many meteor-wrong sellers on ebay are selling them just thinking we are stupid enough to buy them? I told him he would not last an hour before his mail box was full of emails telling him his rock is not a meteorite! Oh well, you can't win them all! Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson 05 Retrospective
Dear Listees I think the bigger point in all this nonsense is for the "List" referred to in "Greetings List" to accept another person's statement that we should consider the Dean's statement. Not the Dean's statement to me (i.e., Dave), Big Steve, or any one else, but to the writer of that email (names appearing after the word "Cordially"). The logic in asking us to accept his/their word that the Dean has somehow castigated the good Dr. Ehlmann and that we should accept that as gospel is strange to say the least. Whoops, I forgot to add "in retrospect". Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson 05 Retrospective
Now I know that you are a bitter piece of filth who doesn't have a meteorite and it lashing out at the world for it. Dr Ehlmann is the nicest man in the world, and knows meteorites better than you can imagine, he has curated one of the worlds finest collections for decades. Why don't you just fade away, and lock yourself and your "meteorites" in a cave for a while? Bitterness and hatefulness (and lawsuits) will not turn your crappy rocks into meteorites, no matter how much you wish. Sincerely Mike Farmer - Original Message - From: "S. I had a personal conversation with the Dean of the TCU geology department in which he informed me that among other things, Dr. Ehlmann was "barely a geologist and not a very good one at that". He also called him, "an old man just waiting to retire," just a menial curator of a meteorite collection doing no real research". He said more but I don't necessarily agree with everything he Dean said. But it matters not much since in my view this award has very little meaning attached to it because of the group handing it out. Was there some sort of election or nomination procedure involved or posted somewhere? How does this little favoritism scheme and showering of affection work for a group who even his colleague has bad mouthed him this way. Did you include the Dean's viewpoint ? Or did you gather together willy nilly to keep misconduct and racism a fertile nesting ground in planetary science? Cordially, S. Thompson -- Lifetime achievement And remember, you don't have to be "old" to receive a lifetime achievement award : ) There are many other deserving people in our community, so stay tuned for next year's awards! Low point of the show this year was when somebody stole one of our Harvey Awards, while they were on display prior to the awards ceremony. It was somewhat embarrassing that -- thanks to our thief -- we did not have an award to give to our final recipient (E.T.), but I was able to make another one, and deliver it to E.T.'s room before he left for Oregon. I know that Harveys are something of a hot item, but COME ON that's pretty low. We're going to make a special "Jackass of the Year" certificate for the person who stole the award, and we'll leave it out on the table next year, so be sure to steal that too. Thanks. On a more positive note, I'd like to thank Twink & Larry Monrad and Jim Kriegh for the stunning Gold Basin panorama birthday cake, which they very kindly brought to the party. This year's cake was the best ever. Also, thanks to my co-host Steve Arnold IMB, and my great friend Geoff Cintron who did everything from act as chauffeur to buying us drinks during the awards; and Lisa Marie Morrison of Sirocco Design, a very talented jewelry designer, who served as our glamorous hostess *and* absentee bid agent during the R.A. [meteorite-list] USPS, ebay and Amazon
Re: The Care and Feeding of "The Art of Collecting Meteorites." Not-to-Worry Dept. - All books sent to USA addresses have "Delivery Confirmation" attached. Thanks to our US Postal Service, books sent as early as February 8 reached their destination on February 10..or not yet. Pardon our dust. I am monitoring delivery daily and am quite frustrated by these delays. Please don't ask me (yet) to provide over 300 USPS tracking numbers to each individual who has ordered so far. I estimate that only 10% of all mailed copies have been delivered as of this moment (Wednesday morning). One reader in New Mexico worried about his copy and I found it sitting in Memphis, TN - probably visiting Elvis. Amazon sales - Are out of the question. They want a minimum commission of 40% of the retail price, and possibly as much as 55%. This works only if you have an artificially inflated cover price. ebay - I will offer the book at a later date on ebay. Presently, I am making it available first to loyal list members. "meteorobs", and readers of Meteorite magazine, as the "numbered, signed copy" concept is quite popular. And as a remark, Dho 007 is extremely easy accessible and affordable in ebay for the collector with not so opulent financial means, as the price at the moment rarely exceeds 5$/g for small slices and large chunks I observed going sometimes at 1.5$/g. A completely sick price for a cumulate Eucrite and Dho 007 is a pretty one, get one from finmet (who should be praised as a hero from each collector, if you remember how he made affordable - dealers would say: "ruined" - the price of Kainsaz, Richfield, Seymchan, Dronino, Brahin, Tsarev, Vengerovo, Markovka, Polujamki, Dronino, Morasko, once some Moons with historical world record prices). Anyone have any more links / papers about this material?
