[meteorite-list] Cutting a Window

2007-02-14 Thread Gary K. Foote
Hi Listoids,

Can anyone offer me good advice on how to cut a window in a meteorite
without a lapidary saw? Can a regular table saw be modified for this use?
If not, is there anything other than a lap saw that will do a good job?

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

You can always polish a window instead of cutting one. That is, unless you
would like a small end cut to go with the larger stone as well.

Have fun!

Odd lights, low sounds cause stir
By Maggie Gill-Austern
Sun Journal (Maine)
February 14, 2007

FARMINGTON - Strange lights with no obvious cause were spotted all over
northern Franklin County Tuesday night, Sheriff's Department dispatchers
said.

The phone was ringing off the hook, dispatcher Bill Hoyt said.

Multiple callers from multiple towns - New Vineyard, Wilton, Phillips,
Industry, and around Mt. Abram - called to report bizarre,
low-to-the-ground lights, he said.

They were seeing, basically, a string of seven or eight lights low in
the sky, that were fixed, he said. There (were) also reports of jet
engine noise low to the ground. One person who called worked with jet
airplanes, Hoyt said. They were not like any lights he had ever seen.
Some people said they looked like stars.

Hoyt called a Federal Aviation Administration office in Boston, which
monitors air traffic in this part of New England, wondering if what
people saw and heard could be related to military exercises.

They said the only air traffic was a couple of routine air flights at
40,000 feet, he said.

Hoyt doubts it was aliens.

I think, personally, most of the time there's an explanation for
everything, he said. But you know, I don't deny the fact that people
see things they can't explain.

It was kind of odd, he said. All these reports were from different
locations at the same time. Maybe it was a meteorite.

The jet-engine sounds and the fixed-ness of the light pattern make him
question that theory, though, he said.

Hello All,

Haven't we heard (or read) similar reports before?! Yep, L'AIGLE !
People didn't see a moving fireball like in the case of Peekskill but
a rectangular cloudlet which seemed to stand still because it was moving
straight toward the observers.

This would be Maine's 5th fall of a meteorite if something should be found:

Andover - Castine - Nobleborough - Searsmont - Walnut Hill (find)

I used to live at Mt. Abrahm. This is not the first time strange lights
have been seen there. I myself have seen lights hanging low on the
horizon there many times. Nobody ever has an explanation. I wonder if
its not surreptitious Air Force manuevers. At least that's always been my
theory.

Interestingly enough I've seen two green fireballs in my lifetime - both
of them within 25 miles of that area.

Strange.

No, the color is caused by oxygen in the atmosphere. Most low velocity
fireballs are seen as green. Faster fireballs are brighter, and the
white blackbody radiation often swamps the fainter green, although
green may still be seen in the trail.

Anyway, nothing odd in your seeing two green fireballs.

Unlikely but not impossible ... because:

Wethersfield (1982) - L6: A stone of 2756 gr fell through the roof of a house.

Many fireballs have a green hue and that is from
atmospheric oxygen as determined through spectral
analysis of meteors.

Copper abundance in meteorites is rare. I used to
think the green was probably from nickel.

Hello Michael, Paul and list,

A few newspaper articles on the 1982 Wethersfield meteorite can be found on
my website here:

http://www.meteoritearticles.com/znpwethersfield.html

As noted in the above, and in Paul's e-mail, the homeowners Wanda and Robert
Donahue donated the meteorite to the Peabody museum. The Peabody museum's
meteorites are quite impression and it is the oldest (curated) meteorite
collection in the United States. I took the opportunity to examine the
collection a couple years ago and was quite impressed.

Spurred by Michael's e-mail I spoke with Robert and Wanda Donahue this
morning. Robert seemed a little more aged then Wanda (for lack of better
word), liked he asked where I was a couple times, but Wanda was very clear
minded and answered all my questions. Both were kind and I mean no
disrespect to Robert with my comment.

Wanda recalled, “We were overwhelmed, of course. We both heard the noise. A
real loud crash. We ran into the room and looked at the ceiling and saw the
sky.”

She also remembered the names of all the people that examined the meteorite
or were associated with it to some degree at the beginning. Dr. Roy Clarke
made a positive impression on her. I asked what happened to the damage and
was told they had the whole ceiling cut out and put into acrylic. This was
donated to the local historical society. The item was on display a number of
years but is not currently.

The most recent one was for Park Forest on March 27, 2003. Prior

Subject: [meteorite-list] Langs Auction - Official Statement

Dear List Members,

Having just returned home from the 2007 Tucson show Allan and I would like
to make the following statement
regarding our annual meteorite auction:

1) First of all, thank you to our many friends and customers who
participated in the 2007 auction. It was intended to
be a fun, family-run event, and we are very disappointed that a few
individuals have attempted to turn it into
something deceitful.

2) We are not professional auctioneers, and freely admit that we made some
mathematical errors during the bidding.
We had one person handling the absentee bids, one auctioneer, one
tabulating the results, and one spotting bids. In
a few instances we evidently failed to log every absentee bid, and some
lots sold for less than they should have. We
apologize for those errors and will make good on them. Allan will
personally contact the high bidders on every lot in
question, and offer them a replacement specimen, or find another
appropriate way in which to compensate them for
our mistakes.

3) All specimens sold were from Allan's personal collection. Funds raised
from the auction will help support The
Langheinrich Fossil Preserve -- our not-for-profit educational and research
paleontology facility in upstate New
York. Any bidder who is unhappy with any item purchased at the auction can
return it to us for a full refund.

4) At the close of the auction we could not account for three specimens
which had been won by Mr. Karl. At the time
we believed those pieces to have been stolen. We offered Mr. Karl an item
from the auction catalog at far below our
reserve as a thank you for his understanding regarding the lost
specimens. He accepted that offer, and left with a
very fine historic specimen for less than Allan's cost. Later, when packing
up the room, we discovered the three
specimens had accidentally been put in a box in the kitchen. We are happy
to make those specimens available to Mr.
Karl, at the hammer price, if he still wants them.

5) Please note that the person making the loudest accusations regarding our
integrity was not at the auction, and did
not even place absentee bids. We have been in business for over thirty
years, and we value our good reputation
above everything else. Any person -- whether a bidder or an interested
party -- who has questions about the
auction is invited to contact us in private. Allan will personally ensure
that every person who bid at the auction is
happy with the final outcome.

6) We are very disappointed that our integrity has been questioned by one
or two people. We also feel that The
Meteorite List is not an appropriate forum for business discussions, so
this will be our only public statement
regarding the auction.

Once again we thank our good friends and customers for their decades of
support. Please contact us off-List with
any questions or concerns, and we will make sure they are taken care of.

Sincerely,

Iris Lang

Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim

2007-02-14 Thread Rob McCafferty

Could your Martian impact scenario apply to ejecta
 from Mercury?

Probably but you've no atmospheric effects to account
for.

You've got a big potential well to climb out of mind.
Fine, you've got the Yarkovsky effect to help you out
but it's a big ask. I don't know where I read this or
who calculated it, but I remember reading that with
all the variables (including difficulty finding them)
no more than 15kg of mercury meteorites are likely on
earth. One of these days I'll take copies of this
kinda thing.

I was wondering if there would there be any
ablation at all on the outbound martian rock,

Regardless of Mars' characteristics, It's gonna need
7km/s to get off the planet and that's gonna cause
ablation, unless there is an undetermined process by
which it can escape without it. Sterling's method for
low shock ejecta may well do the job and I like it.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA Window

2007-02-14 Thread tett
Gary,

400 grit is relatively fine when used in conjunction with meteorites. In
most cases, I don't polish past 400 grit as detail is lost when over
polished. Starting with 150 grit then 300 and then 400 works great for many
meteorites. Use your paper on top of a large think piece of glass with lots
of alcohol.

Some stones polish in seconds. I just polished some deep cut marks out of a
large slice ~65mm x 65mm in about 15 minutes. Some stones are very hard and
the only way to get a nice window is to cut. There are probably some on the
list who will cut for you for a small fee or sample.

Dark shocked meteorites tend to be very tough to polish. Ringwoodite which
results from shock (dark black melt) is very hard and I think I can see some
in your window.

Hope this helps.

Well, I used 400 grit wet and sanded and sanded and sanded and sanded.
Got a small window. Any comments/observations? [other than I need better

Re: [meteorite-list] eBay Hassles

2007-02-14 Thread Mark
Steve,
Ebay also owns Skype, the largest VOIP company going. Skype at any given
time has over 8 MILLION users either on the phone or on a chat conference.
My company uses Skype for international communication within our company and
to interact with some of the biggest telecommunication/IP providers in the
industry and it is 100% FREE. In fact shortly after Ebay bought Skype they
opened up by allowing VOIP calls from any computer to ANY Land phone,
unlimited calling to anywhere in the US and Canada for free. Thanks to ebays
purchase of Skype, you can also buy an account to allow VOIP calls from any
computer, to any phone in the US and or Canada for only $29.95 a YEAR and
that is a year, not a month like Vonage.

The free calling started last April and went through the end of the year and
I can tell you that I personally spent hours on the phone to all of my
relative during that time. I also use the Yearly service and have not paid
for a long distance call in almost a year.

Skype is also integrated into Ebay now and bidders can actually use it to
contact you if they have questions. We have used it for a few expensive
auctions and it was great. We had alot of calls and I think did better on
those auctions because of skype but have no real hard evidence, just
experience.

Paypal may have its flaws and if used with reckless abandon it can be
troublesome, follow the rules and do not keep too much money in paypals
possession and you are fine. I have used paypal since it began and I
personally have had absolutely no problems and have had to deal with some
disputes via paypal, not all went my way but all were handled fairly. Paypal
is not the end all but it is still safer and cheaper than accepting credit
cards any other way.

So not everything ebay is about or does is part of the axis of evil.
Everything comes at a price, sometimes monetary sometimes in intangibles.

Gary's situation is not unique. And ebay does not take sides, they do
provide ways of dealing with bidders such as Gary's. Seven days after the
auction he can file a dispute for non-payment. If the bidder replies to the
dispute, good or bad at that point the seller can void the sale and
instantly get all the fees back. Or the seller can wait to hear from a
bidder and then decide. Ebay allows sellers to receive the bidders contact
info as soon as the auction ends, Gary could have called the bidder the day
the auction ended. On any auction over $300.00 we call the person the next
business day and ask if they have any questions, tell them about how the
item will be shipped and when. A few have found it intiimidating but the
rest thought it to be above average service, and guess what, ANY seller can
do that and should if they think they are not going to get paid. If the info
is bad, report it to ebay and if ebay finds the info bad they suspend the
bidder.

One has to take the time to protect themselves if they are going to sell on
ebay. It would be a great world if the concept of ebay worked perfectly, but
there is that part of our society that has to steal, lie and otherwise f*ck
things up for everyone else. That is why when we got into selling seriously
we went to a lawyer and said this is what we want to do, HOW DO WE protect
OURSELVES. That is the key Steve, too many people want everyone else to look
out for them, protect them, and they want to blame everything and everyone
else for their lack of responsibility and lack of planning. I deal with it
everyday, my company is in collections, I hear a million reasons why someone
lese is at fault for the debtor not being able to pay. Gee they got the loan
and they spent the money but it is someone else's fault for why they can not
pay.

Ebay is not going to hold anyone's hand and protect them, they simply offer
the venue for the transactions to happen and if you rely on them to keep you
totally safe you will never like ebay. No mall in the country is going to
guarantee that you will never have items shoplifted and ebay offers no
guarantee that your trades are safe. The mall provides security but you are
ultimately responsible for your store. Same as on ebay and they tell you
that upfront and remind you on almost every page, they offer workshops and
help pages, what more do you need?

As for ebay making a profit in two places, give me a break, that is
capitalism at its best. I suppose it is underhanded for a doctor to have a
practice at an office and also at a hospital that doctor would be charging
for different services in two venues.

Ebay is not different than any other publicly held corporation, they are out
to make a buck, just like the rest of us.

It is not a conspiracy, it is only common sense and business. Cover your ass
at all times and you will be fine. Being on this list doesn't make me or
anyone else a genius, but 90% of the IQ's here are above average in my
estimation, Proud Tom included. That should make it easy to deal with the

Gary,

If you don't mind cut loss you can cut your meteorites with an inexpensive
masonry blade. The blade could be used on a table saw or a circular saw. You
can secure the rock to a piece of lumber or put it in a vise, if using a
circular saw. Just be very very careful!

Gary and all,

I forgot to add that if you choose to use a table or circular saw, make sure it's an old one that you aren't real concerned about. Thecutting dust isn'tvery good for the bearings. I use an old junker I bought at the flea for 5 bucks.

Hola Gary, List;I have a little masonry saw sort of like a 4" skill saw and it came from Home Depot for $50 included the blade. It would cut stony meteorites as Bill noted, use a wood jawed vice make a rip guide so you cut straight and even, the saw has a water cooling system that attaches to a garden hose, should work fine, I suppose a hack saw might work but a tiny rock trim saw that most rock shops have would do a good job too, just remember to dry correctly to get rid of the water.Dave F. Well Zep,

although I’m lying in bed in Tucson with the Uruquay-Influenza (Hans, I’ll

I really want to miss my 1st-Tucson-experience. It IS indeed the Mekka of
stones, 40 different shows going on parallely, if then some not yet cleared
circumstances at one single event will keep you from visiting Tucson…nobody
can help you.

Not only that it’s most probably the most important event to catch sight of
novelties concerning desert material and not to forget the real show- and
masterpieces of historical specimens, which you won’t find to such an extend
at the Old-World-Shows,
but it is the people, collectors, hunters, dealers likewise - the meteorite
community – which makes that event to an extraordinary highlight in the
meteorite calendar!

I want to express my warmest thanks to all of them, who made my first visit
to an extraordinary experience,
to list you all by name would be to long.

He, Zep, aside from the fact, that we all want our specimens for free, I
guess you missed a lot of legal steals, not only from our room – and Zep, if
you prefer a more cosy show, contact immediately “Zel”,

See you in Ensisheim!

Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim

2007-02-14 Thread Randall Gregory
Ken,

Thank you for you reply and the link to webwrongs. Yes, it's theolitic basalt
with a melted surface. I hope you will keep an open mind and take the time to
read this. Please take a look at the Geophysical Meteors on the web link you
provided.

I have had many communications with the author of that website, Dr. Andrei
Ol'khovatov. If you would look at the Peruvian meteorite sighting on that
website you will see that it was a mid-day witnessed fall and the impact was
recorded by 3 different seismic stations (Arica Chile, Arequipa Peru, and Lima
Peru). Dr. Mutsumi Shisutka (Institute Geophysical Peru) and Dr. Armando Minaya
UNSA (University National San Agustin) assisted me by providing seismic
recordings, and in turn, I provided them with the actual location of the
crater. The actual location of the crater was important in helping to adjust
their equipment in refining earthquake epicenters.

The main mass at this current time in in-extractable due to the terrain but
efforts are underway contracting with a heavy equipment operator to bulldoze a
small dirt road. I have talked with the local government about buying a 100
hectares mining concession encompassing the crater to protect it. When the main
mass is uncovered, I'll know more.

It took me 2 years and 6 separate expeditions to find the crater. I lived for
a time in the area of El Castillo with a family that witnessed this event. With
satellite photos, eyewitness accounts, seismic data, detailed charts and
assistance provided by the national university I searched for the impact area.
I found it and I have all the proof. What is interesting is that some of the
specimens I collected near the crater are identical to one of the pictures in
the venusmeteorite.com.

I went to ACTLABS in Lima, Peru to have a sample analyzed but they lacked the
equipment necessary. They told me that ACTLABS.com (Canada) might be able to
provide this analysis. The type of testing I need is space weathering.
Specifically, solar to galactic ray tracks, oxygen isotope fractionation
patterns, radionuclide measurements, and noble gas analysis. I would like to
find a planetary geologist who will take to time to look at a specimen and read
the reports but in reality, my expectations are low.

I wrote to Dr. Korotev some time ago, but he too has doubts and his area of
expertise is lunar meteorites. I can tell you that some of the rocks near the
crater have a black splatter with the same characteristics as the samples. In
an area of tan to rust colored terrain, a rock that looks like melted black
plastic is unmistakable. I talked with a Peruvian government hydrologist (Jorge
Mena) that works in this general area and he told me he has never seen rocks
like that in his 40 years in the field searching for underground aquifers.

Can you speculate what would a inner-planet meteorite look like? Does the
fact that it fell mid-day have any significance? Would you expect a mid-day
fall? Are mid-day falls rare? And if 20 years ago someone said that they had a
meteorite that might just be from Mars, would anyone believe them?

I have a lot of evidence but no definitive proof that these are meteorites or

2007-02-14 Thread Allan Treiman

Another way to recognize a Venus surface rock would be from
its weathering in the Venus atmosphere. Because Venus'
surface is so hot, and its atmosphere is so rich in carbon dioxide
and sulfur oxides, the surface rocks should have lots of sulfates
and maybe carbonates in them. Water-free sulfates like anhydrite.

Argon dating.

Potassium decays to argon. At the temperture of the Venus surface, the

Therefore, its

argon age would be about the same as its cosmic ray exposure age.

Well Zep,

although I’m lying in bed in Tucson with the Uruquay-Influenza (Hans, I’ll

I really want to miss my 1st-Tucson-experience. It IS indeed the Mekka of

circumstances at one single event will keep you from visiting Tucson…nobody
can help you.

Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim

2007-02-14 Thread Randall Gregory
Mr. Webb,McCafferty and any interested parties on the list.

If you don't mind, coud you please answer a couple of questions?

Could your Martian impact scenario apply to ejecta from Mercury?
  http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2003/pdf/1933.pdf

The spatial density (number per unit volume) of meteoroids varies as a
function of distance from the sun, distance from a planet, ecliptic latitude
and longitude Are there any projections on the total number of spatial
meteoroids related to planetary volume?

Do meteoroids tend to group or stream? Or are streams and groupings a rare
occurrence?
Excluding space dust, my feelings are that streams and groups would be
predominant.

Due to a lower escape velocity, would a large asteroid impact on Mercury
close to it's aphelion be more likely to produce ejecta reaching the escape
velocities of Mercury/Sun than a similar event on Venus? Any probability
studies?

(For probability, I would assume the best/worst possible conditions:
equatorial launch, launch relative to planetary rotation, lowest daily
temperature range, and rock composition/density (basaltic mass).

Do you know of any studies with respect to meteoroids in space arriving to
earth as meteorites, do they have totally random trajectories due to collisions
or would they generally follow a straight course from their home
asteroid/planet? To put it quite simply, depending on rotation, impact time,
solar orientation, and impact angle could ejecta from a the inner planets
travel in a relatively straight line away from the sun. And would this same
scenario apply to planets outside earth's orbit. Could they travel in a similar
fashion towards Earth? And could this relate to the Earth's orientation to the
sun at the time of meteroite impact. In other words, would outer planet
meteroids be more likely to fall at night and inner planet meteorids fall
during the day.

Is fusion crust thickness directly related to the mineral characteristics of
density, hardness, melting point, thermal conductivity, and internal
tempurature of the meteoroid? Am I wrong in assuming that it is? Are there
other factors?

Would a shock-heated ejecta upon encountering the extreme cold of space cause
any changes in the density of the underlying material? What about ejecta at
melt temperature?

What would be the effect on micrometeorite pitting on various meteoroids?

Interplanetary dust particles (micro-meteoroids) were expected to form
well-defined craters upon impacting exposed material in space. Studying the
frequency and features of these craters will provide data on the mass-flux
distribution of micro-meteoroids and, to a lesser extent, on the velocity,
magnitude and direction - Study of Meteoroid Impact Craters on Various
Materials, NASA Langley Research Center.

Some of my samples show pitting which may be caused by micro-meteoroid
collisions. Due to the extreme hardness of the sample and sub-millimeter
thickness of the fusion crust these pits have been preserved. The ablated
material gathers on the trailing edge of these pits on orientated samples.

Do you know of any meteorites currently in collections that exhibit pitting?
What are the characteristics of the ablated material?

Are all meteorites tested for density and most specifically hardness?

And could anyone please help me retrieve this article:

I was wondering if there would there be any ablation at all on the outbound
martian rock, from a planet with:

Surface atmospheric pressure: ~6.1 mb (about 1/150th that of Earth's)
Surface gas density: ~0.020 kg/m3

  Surface temperature: ~210 K (-63 degrees Celsius)
  Low escape velocity

And is it possible to achieve such a low impact angle or would gravity and
aerodynamic drag increase the angle so that a 1-3 degree trajectory may not be
possible. I believe existing ballistic models could be combined with a Mars
atmosphere model and gravitational model that might help to answer this
question.

Quite possibly a composite mathematical model borrowing code from the many
existing models might add validity to your theory. I believe Mars atmosphere
models, ballistic, compression, heating, and the myriad are all fairly
constant. It might not be such a large undertaking to help determine if a
lightly shocked rock could be back-spinned into space. I'd really like to see a
model like this applied to the other

Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim

2007-02-14 Thread Randall Gregory
  Ken,

I will be happy to share with you some of the data that I've collected at the
impact site including videos and pictures. All of the pictures, videos, and
samples are stored at my apartment in Lima. I am currently in Arequipa and
expect to travel to Lima within the next two weeks.

I hope you understand that I can not provide you with the exact location of
the crater until I have secured the mining concession rights to the area. When
I legally have title to the area, I will make the location known and provide
first access only to scientists that study impact sites, then to other
interested parties. When the studies are concluded, I will start excavation of
the crater.

I can give you the approximate location.

Coordinates: 15°59'18S - 72°30'43W for the general area of the crater.

Coordinates: 16°00'01.71S - 72°37'08.16W seismic epicenter recorded by
the National University of Peru (UNSA) intensity 3.8 Richter

Coordinates: 16°20'59.77S - 72°46'57.07W seismic epicenter recorded
by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) located in Arequipa, 200 kilometers
from the seismic event recorded it at 4.0 Richter giving the approximate TNT
for seismic energy yield of 1 kiloton (small atomic bomb).

All seismic stations including a station in Chile recorded this event at the
exact time the eyewitnesses reported the explosion and resulting dust cloud.
What I find to be remarkable is the accuracy of the seismic data, all within 30
km.

I've also enclosed a copy of a meeting that I had with seismologists from the
Geophysical Institute of Peru. The orginal text was in Spanish which I have
translated to English. Unfortunately, I have to blank out the exact
coordinates. Many people have strongly cautioned me about giving out too much
information. I hope you understand, realize, and appreciate how much work has
been put into this discovery. This is just the tip of the iceburg.

On a side note, you might recall an image of a face on Mars that was
captured some years back. We now have a similar image on Earth. Go to Wikimapia
and type rostro de dios in the search box, click on the name, read the
caption, and pan out. People said it looked like the Face of God and the name
stuck. This image is clearly visible from about 3000ft. to over an altitude of
110 miles. Coordinates are: 1620'22.78S - 7157´40.61W for Google Earth.

  Comments appreciated.

I wish to thank all that attended our meeting yesterday for your time and
effort. Maybe we can help the scientific community in Peru and the United
States to a better understanding of our universe. I am pleased that I could
assist you in calibrating your seismic equipment.

Before my wife and I left for Lima, we asked her father to submit a small
article to the local newspaper to announce the discovery and to thank the UNSA
for their support in this discovery. We never expected that the newspaper would
sensationalize this story.

During the last expedition, my team and I made two excursions to the impact
area. My intention was to fully document the impact zone and to expand the
search to see if other structures may exist that would contribute to the
discovery. Since it is difficult to estimate the amount of energy released on
impact, I believe that it was important to completely document the total area.
There may be multiple impacts, secondary impacts, impactites, fused sand,
tektites, micro-tektites, with each contributing a piece of information to this
story of a hyper velocity impact.

The one thing that I hoped would not happen was for other people to go to the
impact area and contaminate what is still a structure in a natural state. To
document what we talked about, the GPS coordinates of what we called (blanked
out) which from this point you can see the crater is (blanked out) with another
vantage point closer to the impact is (blanked out). I trust the people at IGP
and please (por favor) The only thing I ask from you is that you keep this
information from public knowledge until I have completed my study.

I have video recorded some parts of the expedition that I would also like to
share with you at some time in the very near future. The definitions of some of
the terms that I used are listed below.

Impactites - glassy, molten rocks can also be produced directly by the high
heat and pressure of a meteorite impact or just its shock wave, without
projecting the molten material up into our atmosphere. Molten glass and rocks
fractured by high pressure have been found near impact craters

Tektites - small, pebble-like glassy objects of Earth material that have
been melted by meteorite impact, splashed up into our atmosphere, and fallen to
Earth again under gravity. They often acquire aerodynamic shapes when they
partially melt on their return

Re: [meteorite-list] www.venusmeteorite.com - what are your opinions on this claim

2007-02-14 Thread Randall Gregory
Mr. Webb,McCafferty and others.

If you don't mind, I have a few more questions.

Do you know of a facility that could perform 187Os/186Os ratios testing at
a reasonable price?

Would element variations and ratios in the fusion crust be indicative of
extraterrestrial origin. In other words, would the capture and melting of space
dust into the fusion crust, thus causing elemental variances be a good
indicator?

Do you know of any comparative analysis of the fusion crust/matrix that could
be identified as high versus low atmospheric heating?

Does rapid atmospheric heating alter the fusion crust differently than
terrestrial heating?

Do you know if artificial ablation has been compared to natural ablation on
meteorites? I tried different types of heat on a sample that I fractured and
found that an artificially heated sample created a very different type of
fusion crust. The artificial crust was glassy and somewhat brittle.

In the vacuum of space, all meteorids would receive solar radiation in
varying degrees and cooled by space itself. Could the temperature of a
near-earth meteroid be projected from it's mineral characteristics? In other
words, we know meteorites are cold, but the question is how cold are they
before they reach the Earth's atmosphere?

  Thanks,

  Randall

Hi!

I have used for my impactites a Ceramic tile saw that uses a 7 inch blade.
It does the job for me. You can find those new for between 50 to 100$
Something like this:

And if you decide to remake your ceramics in your bathroom, you'll have your

Gary and all,

I forgot to add, that if you choose to use a table or circular saw, make
sure it's an old one that you aren't real concerned about. The cutting

good for the bearings. I use an old junker I bought at the flea for 5

[meteorite-list] valentine's day

2007-02-14 Thread meteorites whole sale
Happy valentine's day for all.
The History of Saint Valentine's Day Valentine's Day started in the time of the
Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno
was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the
Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the
Feast of Lupercalia. The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate.
However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of
the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of
paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the
jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl
whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and
often, they would fall in love and would later marry.
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and
unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting
soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that
roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius
cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a
priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the
Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint
Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned
him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered
martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was
the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of
February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions,
amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of
young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as
chance directed.
The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with
the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those
of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the
pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this
new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for
valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
Best wishes

[meteorite-list] Offers pour in for Didim rock - Turkey

2007-02-14 Thread Bjorn Sorheim
http://www.voicesnewspaper.com/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=490

COLLECTORS from as far as America have offered astronomical prices to get their
hands on the famous meteor of Didim.

The meteor was claimed by Abdullah Ar?türk when it rocketed to earth and
landed at the Green Park complex, in Ye?ilkent, last Thursday, after scores of
people across the Bodrum Peninsula reported to police a ball of fire across the
sky.

Since the story broke, first by Voices, across Turkey and the rest of the
world, Ar?türk has been overwhelmed with offers for a part of the meteorite.

Ar?türk, not eager to part from his meteor of which he thinks to be a present
from God, solved the problem by splitting it into two. He now will keep one
half of the meteor in a special cage made for it; and the other half is for
sale!

American collector Robert Wesel, who read the news in Voices has offered
Ar?türk 1,800 dollars. Another American collector Stephan Grossman offered 500
dollars to buy the meteor.

We interviewed Abdullah Ar?türk at his house. Ar?türk said that he slept with
the meteor at nights and that it was a present from God.

Ar?türk stated that he would evaluate the claims but because he could not part
with his beloved meteor he had split it in two.

He said: ?I will have a special cage made for this meteor and keep it there
until my last breath. A lot of people around me have told me to sell it, but ?
am unable to spare it. ? wanted at least half of it to stay with me.?

The drama unfolded when a substance resembling a ball of fire was seen in the
sky above Bodrum Güllük Gulf and Didim. The gendarme and police were
overwhelmed with notification calls and the worried farmers had waited outside
for hours.

The Astronomy and Space Sciences Department of Ege University made an
announcement stating the possibility of this being a meteor and later it was
certainly determined as that.

The news published on the front pages of the national papers had caused great
excitement and fear all over Turkey.

Following the news being released first in Voices and then in national press,
Ar?türk started getting astronomical bids for the meteor that in the end, he
finally turned his phone off.

Re: [meteorite-list] Some thoughts on Larry Atkin's Recent Holbrook Find

2007-02-14 Thread DNAndrews

Hola Johnny Q,
You may be right, but as large as that piece was, it might have taken a
couple of years or so for it to be washed or eroded out. But you are
right, it was found near the top of a moundjust slightly down from
the top. Even one fragment was found under a cow pie. ;-)

The miniscule 69 gms. I found that day (largest fragment 43 gms...one of
my better days), just didn't seem worth fussing over after Larry's
whopper Holy Grail find. ;-)

Congrats to Larrydon't know how you did it, but you did it.

JKGwilliam wrote:

Bernd, Larry, Maria and List,
Here's some more food for thought concerning the Holbrook strewnfield.

One of my best friends, Dave Andrews, lives in Holbrook and has hunted the
strewnfield hundreds of times. He was Larry and Maria when Larry made his
find of a lifetime. Dave and I talked on the phone while the three of them
were still out in the field, and Dave told me it was found in an area that
many of us had been over dozens of times.

How could that be?

Over the years, Dave has noted that wind and water erosion probably come
into play. After a good wind or rain storm, artifacts ( indian pottery
shards) and meteorites become exposed. They seem to appear in places
where they weren't just days before. In actuality, they were there all
along but were hidden below a thin layer of sand. Anyone who has ever
hunter there has noticed that there are small hillocks of sand mounded up
around the bases of some of the indigenous shrubs. My guess is that once
these shrubs die and are blown away by the winds (which can last for days
and reach speeds of 50 MPH and more) the sand moves on without the shrubs
there to hold it in place.

Several years ago, Dave, John Blennert and I were hunting in
Holbrook. While walking along with Dave, he bent over and picked up a
small complete stone of about 2 grams. It was perched atop a small column
of soil very much like a golf ball sitting on a tee. The soil (mostly
sand) around it had blown away leaving the small stone nearly half an inch
above the surrounding soil.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Hello Larry, Maria, and List,

First of all, of course, sincere congratulations!

They came to the Southwest and did an amazing job, finding
meteorites at Holbrook, Franconia and Gold Basin.

.. which should remind us all of Bob Haag's famous words:

The key is to get out there and look for them.
Usually some pieces were missed in the initial search.

But: I had been within 50 feet of Larry's find many, many
times and driven by it many more.

.. which shows how difficult it can be, even for experienced
meteorite hunters like Ruben Garcia.

.. which should not discourage anyone willing to search the strewnfield
again and again, even though Foote (no, not Gary ;-) remarked in his pre-
liminary note on the Holbrook shower in 1912:

the field is now pretty well cleaned up.

Hmm! If he had known what he didn't know then, ... he was wrong!

Here is one of the die-hard observations from Foote's notes:

One piece larger than an orange fell into a tree in a yard at Aztec
cutting the limb
off slick and clean and falling to the ground, and when picked up was
almost red-hot.

Von Achen, who saw them fall, reported that they were too hot to pick
up. Two accounts state that they became lighter in color after cooling.

According to Foote's notes, the ellipsoidal strewnfield extended
west-east but one question
has not yet been answered satisfactorily: Were the stones
indiscriminately spread over the
ground, or were they found sorted according to size (and weight)? How do
Larry's find of

a lifetime and Maria's finds fit into this puzzle?

Happy to own an 8.3-gram individual (label no. 331) purchased

from the Zeitschels in 1987 and a 0.45-gram thin platelet,

Bernd

P.S.: Please, don't forget to include the Branch
family in your thoughts and your prayers !

Re: [meteorite-list] Nantan, not garbage

2007-02-14 Thread Fredmeteorhall
Hello Howard and fellow meteorite collectors:
I agree with Michael Blood, not all Nantan are rusters or garbage. Out of
all the many hundreds of meteorites that I have collected over some 14 years,
one of my favorite slices is a 20.5 inch long by 13.5 inch high slice of
Nantan. I did have to treat it with Bill Mason's rust prevention kit, and
re-etch
it shortly after buying it. This Nantan has stayed quite stable, mounted on a
wall for many years now. It is gorgeous.
I also have a large Nantan that almost split in two during flight, looks
something like a heavy iron butterfly, and it shows no rust while being kept
in one of my meteorite show cases for six or more years now, where I use VCI
emitters. Keep in mind that I live in Colorado where the air is usually
somewhat
dry.
High regards to all, Fred Hall

Hola Gary, List;
I have a little masonry saw sort of like a 4 skill saw and it came from
Home Depot for $50 included the blade. It would cut stony meteorites as
Bill noted, use a wood jawed vice make a rip guide so you cut straight
and even, the saw has a water cooling system that attaches to a garden
hose, should work fine, I suppose a hack saw might work but a tiny rock
trim saw that most rock shops have would do a good job too, just
remember to dry correctly to get rid of the water.

Dave F.

Bill wrote:

Gary,

If you don't mind cut loss you can cut your meteorites with an inexpensive
masonry blade. The blade could be used on a table saw or a circular saw. You
can secure the rock to a piece of lumber or put it in a vise, if using a
circular saw. Just be very very careful!
