[meteorite-list] strange meteorite
HI ALL! Some days ago a friend of mine show me a stange meteorite, it weights 1640g and it measures about 15x8x8cm. We cut a small corner but we cannot understand what it could be, so a couple of days ago He cut it in half and send me a picture for ask me what I think about. Is very very low magnetic but on the surface there are some tiny spots of metal, I haven't see any chondrules. For first I think it looks like and LL6 like HaH183: http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php?code=11666 but now I have no idea! http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Researchers_Find_Meteorite_Fragments_In_Altai_999.html Researchers Find Meteorite Fragments In Altai RIA Novosti May 8, 2007 A group of Russian researchers looking for a meteorite that fell in January in the Altai Territory in southern Siberia has found an extraterrestrial substance which could be meteorite fragments, a coordinator said Monday. We have collected about 50 samples, and vitreous threads (traces of comet substance) were discovered in the first of them using a microscope, Vadim Chernobrov of Kosmopoisk (space search) said. We will reach the meteorite site in a few days, but rocks which are probably meteorite fragments have already been found, Chernobrov said. He said only laboratory testing could establish the rocks' origin, adding that there were many volunteers involved in the operation from Moscow, Novosibirsk, Kostroma and local areas. He said all finds will be given to a museum. Earlier, it was reported that January 10, local motorists and residents witnessed the impact of a fiery ball, which eventually ended in a loud sound resembling an explosion. Witnesses called us. This must have been a meteorite, a senior scientist from the Barnaul planetarium said. Natalya Pavlova said that since a fallen meteorite was discovered in 1840, some 20 meteorites, including 4 in the 21st century, have been registered in the area. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] 1000-Pound Meteorite Recovered in Tornado Ruins in Greensburg, Kansas
http://www.nypost.com/seven/05082007/news/nationalnews/meteorite_found_in_tornado_ruins_nationalnews_.htm METEORITE FOUND IN TORNADO RUINS Associated Press May 8, 2007 -- GREENSBURG, Kan. - A million-dollar space rock on display in tornado-devastated Greensburg, has been recovered from a wrecked building. The world's largest pallasite meteorite was found underneath a wall, undamaged by the tornado. The rock is insured for $1 million. Rescue teams searching the rubble also found a survivor and two more victims, raising the tornado death toll to at least 10, authorities said yesterday. The twister, with winds estimated at 205 mph, was part of a weekend of violent storms that tore across the Plains and were also blamed for two other deaths in Kansas. Little remained standing in Greensburg but the grain elevator as the 1,500 residents were allowed back in to check their property yesterday. The tornado demolished every business on the main street. Churches lost steeples, trees were stripped of branches, and neighborhoods were flattened. Officials estimate as much as 95 percent of the town was destroyed. One of the latest victims was found under debris in the middle of town, City Administrator Steve Hewitt said. The other body was pulled from a nearby lake. Rescue teams also found a survivor as they searched the wreckage Sunday, two days after the tornado hit, giving hope other survivors would be found, said Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Ron Knoefel. He did not release the survivor's name or condition, and authorities had not identified any of the victims. Since the tornado hit Friday night, emergency responders have had little indication of how many people may be safely staying with friends or relatives, rather than in shelters. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - May 6, 2007
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Examined Light--Colored Material Near 'Home Plate' - sol 1179-1185, May 06, 2007: Spirit is healthy and has completed its investigation of a knobby rock target known as GoodQuestion. Next on Spirit's itinerary is a drive to the north and an attempt to climb onto Home Plate. On the way, Spirit will examine white--toned material where one of the rover's wheels disturbed the soil. Observations using the miniature thermal emission spectrometer suggest it may be enriched in silica, similar to the Elizabeth Mahon rock outcrop the rover studied last week. Science team members have nicknamed the soil target Gertrude Weise. Sol-by-sol summary: In addition to daily observations of atmospheric dust levels and surveys of the sky and ground using the miniature thermal emission spectrometer, Spirit conducted the following activities: Sol 1179 (April 28, 2007): Spirit acquired panoramic camera images of targets known as Gooli and Joyce Ricketts, surveyed Gooli and a target known as Yolande Schick with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer, and studied GoodQuestion using the alpha--particle X--ray spectrometer. Sol 1180: Spirit surveyed the horizon with the panoramic camera, watched for dust devils, studied GoodQuestion with the Mössbauer spectrometer, and acquired panoramic camera images of GoodQuestion. The rover also surveyed a target known as Joan Sindelar. Sol 1181: Spirit acquired panoramic camera images of a target known as Everett and studied GoodQuestion using the Mössbauer spectrometer. The rover acquired panoramic camera images of a target called Yolanda Schick. Sol 1182: Spirit recorded a movie in search of dust devils using the navigation camera and studied light--toned soil using the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Spirit drove 1.9 meters (6.2 feet) to the new science target, Gertrude Weise. The rover acquired mid--drive images with the navigation camera in support of observations of GoodQuestion with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer, then made those same observations. After the drive, the rover acquired more images with both the navigation and panoramic cameras. Sol 1183: Spirit monitored dust on the rover mast, surveyed Gertrude Weise with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer, and acquired full--color images of GoodQuestion using all 13 filters of the panoramic camera. Spirit acquired super--resolution images of a target known as Fern Shollenberger with the panoramic camera. The rover studied targets nicknamed Philomena Zale, Alma Ziegler, and Ruth Heverly using the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Sol 1184: Spirit watched for dust devils in the morning and checked for drift (changes over time) in the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Spirit drove 6.7 meters (22 feet) to a target called White Soil. The rover acquired post--drive images with both the navigation camera and the panoramic camera. Sol 1185 (May 4, 2007): Plans called for Spirit to watch for dust devils in the morning and complete a systematic foreground study with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. The rover was also to acquire navigation camera images in support of observations with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer, conduct a study of atmospheric argon using the alpha--particle X--ray spectrometer, and watch for dust devils and take panoramic images of the sky the next morning. Odometry: As of sol 1184 (May 3, 2007), Spirit's total odometry was 7,103 meters (4.4 miles). __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Tornado snatches 1, 000 pound pallasite meteorite
List, If you look at photo #12 here: http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/050507tornadoaerials/ In the center of the picture about 1/6 of the way up from the bottom there is what looks like the 2 ft x 3 ft oak stand (possibly tipped over) that the 1,000 pound meteorite used to sit on. Something is still on the stand, but it might be debris. But, just to the left of the stand is a big brown blob. I think that is the meteorite. However, the brown blob might be the old buffalo skin that was kept in the same room as the meteorite. The meteorite might be gone now. It could have been removed by officials, for protection. It could have been stolen. It could have been removed by tornado. As for the extensive city meteorite collection I am almost certain all the city owned was the 1,000 pound Brenham specimen (kept at the Big Well Gift shop) a roughly 300g end piece of Brenham, and a roughly 100g Odessa iron slice in resin (both kept at the City Hall). In any case, I do believe that the items would have been insured. Early on, I think in the first interview the City Manager did mention that the well was in tact, but strangely did NOT mention if the meteorite was still there. And for reports of the Big Well being covered in debris, as you can see very plainly in that same photo #12 (lower left corner) that the gray metal box that covered the hole at the top of the well, that people could walk up to and look down into the well, is intact although the glass is broken in some of the panes. And there is relatively very little debris on top of the well, which is in front of the Gift Shop building that is destroyed. A close look and you can see a bit of the 32 ft wide circular rock wall that extends above ground, that was sitting-bench high above the concrete slap that covers the top of the well. A chaotic situation known about only minutes in advance, destroying the entire town, and a theft needing heavy lifting equipment and transportation (even if only a engine-block lifter and a big pickup) doesn't seem too likely. I'd bet it is still in the pile of debris that was the building containing it. Unless that building is what is now on top of the well, in which case it could be at the bottom of the well. What is more of a concern (from a meteorite perspective, not to belittle all the other human an material loss) is the other meteorite collection of the town that is mentioned-- which would be much more easily lost and much harder to find. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg meteorite
The tornado that destroyed Greensburg was rated as an F5the most powerful class of tornado. The MINIMUM wind speed of an F5 is 261 mphand up to 318 mhp. Much less powerful tornados pick up cars and trucks weighing a ton or more and easily toss them over 100 yards/meters. So a puny little 1000 pound rock wouldn't present too much of a challenge. Some basic information: http://www.tornadoproject.com/fscale/fscale.htm It could be tough to find. If a dense rock like that was in a field and a tornado went directly over it, it probably would not have moved at all. However, it was suspended in a building of comparably much lighter material with a large surface area. Collectively, when the building was ripped apart, it could have been launched a considerable distance. Having virtually no aerodynamic properties It is most likely within a 1/2 mile radius of where it was originally housed. It may even be embedded in the soft earth. I agree with Charlie. I don't think it would be moved much, if any. I think a wind greater than the terminal velocity of the object in free fall would be needed to lift it, and that would be several hundred miles per hour. Steve Arnold wasn't a Kansan, but he took a house in Greensburg—heart of Kiowa county—to be near the fields that, thousands of years ago, were the site of the Brenham meteor fall. Greensburg already had, as a roadside attraction, a 1,000-pound specimen of pallasite meteorite, the largest ever found in the US, until Arnold found a bigger rock. When we did the Wired Science TV show pilot we went to Greensburg to talk to Arnold. We even found another rock—ours was only about a 50-pounder, on sale now for $12,000. The town was a perfectly nice place. Lots of boarded-up stores on the main drag, just like you find in any town in the middle of the country these days. Lots of open space. Not too many places to get a meal. Trim little houses. And now Greensburg is basically gone. On Saturday, a tornado more than half a mile wide ripped through town, with winds more than 200 miles per hour. That's an F-5, for you stormwatchers. There isn't much left. Wired's photo editor, Zana Woods, pinged Steve Arnold. Turns out he's okay; he wasn't in town. His house is as ripped up as the rest of the place. I've never been anywhere that isn't there anymore. I mean, the people of Greensburg will rebuild. The town as an idea is still there even if the physical structures are now, as one news report had it, largely reduced to 30-foot-high piles of rubble. The 1,000-pound pallasite at the Big Well is gone, apparently. No one knows where. We build our cities out of things, objects—wood and plaster, mostly. Some metal. And sometimes nature pulls all those things apart, reveals their guts. I was in Greensburg for a night. That's it. We didn't even stay in town for dinner. But all of us at Wired and Wired Science are thinking about the residents there. Our hearts go out to them because, even if we can't know what it feels like to lose every concrete thing that says home, we know a little about what it means to remember things that live only in time but no longer in space. It's hard enough to remember a world that no longer exists—as all of us do: you can't go home again. But to have that world ripped away by force, all of a sudden? Awful. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg Fundraiser Web Pages V.1 Ready
Hey Guys, 9:02pm Greensburg Time Guess where Kelsey and I am at? We are at our home in Greensburg after Curfew! There might be only 4 of us residents staying here in the midst of Marshall Law. Our neighbors 3 doors down have never left. So that encouraged us. Kelsey and I were driving around getting last minute still photos (for her 4H project) and we got pulled over by a cop. We thought it was because she was standing up in her seat, head out of the sun roof taking photos without her seat belt on. But it was because we had out of state tags. When they learned we were residents, they told us that we needed to be out of town before 7pm, UNLESS we were staying all night. In that case they told us we had to be on our property by 8pm and we would have to stay their until 8am. Kelsey and I looked at each other and smiled. We went by a charity booth, got a dozen bottles of water, some apples and oranges and headed home. We were told that we would be arrested if we stepped off our property, so we are stuck here until 8 am. I still had a half dozen cans of Bud Light cans in the fridge, not that I would need it because our squatter neighbors gave me a bottle of wine to celebrate our constitutional rights! Our neighbors have a generator, and their old rotary dial phone has worked through it all. Miracles of miracles, Greensburg now has 4, count them 1, 2, 3, 4 bars on the cell phone. Maybe it is because FEMA headquarters are 2 blocks down the road. Great news: Bob and Florence Peck are in GREAT Shape! We saw them at their home. Now, HONESTLY Miracle of Miracles is that their home received only minor damage, when everything around them is wiped out. My sister gave me a $20 bill, and asked me to give it to a needy family. So I handed it to Bob, with the explanation of my promise to my sister to give it to someone. He took it with the condition that he would give it to someone else that needed it a lot more than he did. Who am I to argue with him? So I cheerfully agreed. I have a hundred stories to tell, and only 12 hours to tell them. LOL. Anyway, anyone know how to start a blog? Maybe I should do it. Kelsey and I are sitting out by the curb on card tables, hoping to exchange autographs with the great men and women patrolling the neighborhood tonight. We have police, sheriffs, National Guard and a whole host of other people crisscrossing the streets looking for looters. As soon as Kelsey's episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show is over, she will be going to bed in the dry half of the house. Maybe I can post some photos Kelsey took later. Time for the second glass of wine... Re: [meteorite-list] Titanium content
The rocks in question are all extrusive volcanic rocks - basalts. The Ti variation reflects that the lunar mantle is heterogeneous. The source regions where different episodes of melting occurred had to have varied considerably in ilmenite abundance. The mantle of the Moon is not well mixed. Plate tectonics did not happen on the Moon. Although the terrestrial mantle is not homogenous, it's probably more homogenous than the Moon's mantle. There is evidence for mantle overturn on the Moon. The dense mineral ilmenite crystallized from the magma ocean only after the less dense olivine had already crystallized and settled. This led to a gravitational instability where the ilmenite plunged through the olivine (inverse diapir). So, depending where melting occurs, both laterally and vertically, some magmas have more ilmenite than others. At 06:57 08-05-07 Tuesday, you wrote: Yes, Randy is correct about titanium content varying around the Moon. What are the petrological reasons why this varies? In southeast Pennsylvania, we have high titanium diabase intrusions (The York Haven intrusion) and low titanium diabase intrusions in highly folded and complex rocks which date from the precambrian. The lunar variation does not have the same cause, I am sure. But what are some of the ideas that account for the lunar variation? [meteorite-list] Meteorites help
Hi all, I was very sad when hearing about Moroccans using the names of the known meteorites members, I would be happy if this helps at least some of you, it is a program can show you where the email came from, and some interesting informations about carriers, also offers the servers addresses that a message comes throught. The program is , NEW TRACEPRO, Ido not know any about some carriers like cox, comcast, verizon and others if they can show the full headers which offer X-Originating-IP this one you would need to paste in Target case in the main window of the program, click GO, automatically after pinging nudes it will show the country and even a Town the received email came from.also the amazing option is the map showing the countries(servers) the email comes throught. This is a link to dowload, but do not know if it's free, because I have a cracked version from Emule. http://www.download.com/NeoTrace-Pro/3000-2648-10015211.html For any interest, I would gladly take some of my time to help for installing it. Mark, those are fantastic pictures, and you did a great job of chronicling them for us. I really felt like I was right there with Steve as he looked through the debris. Thank you for sharing. I am tiredit is past 3:30 a.m., and I have yet to take in everything from the last day, but as you know the saying Time and tide waits on no man. In case the hopefully linked photos do not seem workdue to length, you can check out the images in my photobucket gallery. http://s148.photobucket.com/albums/s17/ksmeteoriteguy/ Today was the first day they let residents back into Greensburg since the tornado Friday. In many ways, this was day one of recovery. Greensburg resident and world famous meteorite hunter, Steve Brenham Arnold arrived in town around 5 p.m., just a hour before the 6 p.m. curfew. This was only accomplished by making great time into Kansas from his home in Arkansas. Steve brought with him into Kiowa County, his youngest daughter Kelsey, and a certain person from Wichita, Kansas. (That would be me.) After making our way through a couple road stops, as they were directing traffic completely around the town, we arrived at the real road stop, complete with a dozen armed National Guardsmen...and a couple attack helicopters peacefully setting in the background. I was using Steve's camcorder on the scene while the only Guardsman talking wrote on our windshield the address we were going to, and the number of occupants in the yellow Hummer in some type of neon green marker. We were given directions to only go to the resident. Steve's house was in the least hit part of town, which before we arrived was a relief to him. The thought of freely renting the place out to someone in need, disappeared when we arrived. The previous days, rescue workers had sanctioned off the town, and marked the searched homes with paint.Steve got this marking... And a neat little orange paper... The Living Room The Kitchen The Laundry Room Master Bedroom. If someone would have been in this room they would have lived. Perhaps cut a little by flying glass, but alive. The Kids Bedroom was in the best shape in the house, notice the air mattress still inflated. Photos of Steve searching through the roof, ceiling and insultation mixture, not a 6-8 sludge over everything. Neighbors of Steve And around town photos. After curfew went into effect we left town, but not before a very quick drive around, as many of the other citizens were also doing at the time. The police, from all cities and counties in the lower portion of Kansas, didn't seem to mind and were quite understanding of the town's citizens needing to see for themselves. To give a good ideal of the damage, the following photographs were taken with my camera, while I was using the camcorderstanding through the roof of Steve's hummer, while we quickly went around what use to be downtown Greensburg. Meaning, places were not cherry picked for damage, I didn't even use more then a half thought to choose a target and many times didn't even really aim at anything.it was simply like this everywhere. Re: [meteorite-list] Nasa, CAMPO DEL CIELO
This is a pretty pathetic story. It says that NASA wants to preserve the invaluble Campo del Cielo craters because the soil is very similar to the soil of the Martian surface. We will never understand Mars unless we preserve the craters at Campo del Cielo and study them. Um..., I am not a scientist, but somehow I do not think that the farmland and swamps at Campo is in any way similar to the surface of Mars, and weathered craters that are virtually non-existant at Campo del Cielo will in no way have anything at all to do with Mars study. It also states that Campo sells for $3.00 gram on the internet, so we can thus assume anyone who owns a campo is now a multi-millionaire To me the article is not that interesting since it is so full of idiotic statements like that.
