[meteorite-list] 1 kg Brahin pie slice.

2007-09-26 Thread Charles Viau
Just for the record, what is a 1kg pie-slice of Brahin worth today??? I
got it about 5 years ago from finmet when he was finding big pieces in the
Brahin strewnfield.

My collection has concentrated in smaller pieces below 500g as of this date,
and I would be interested in selling this piece to fund other small pieces
of rare types, but need an offer. The piece is pie-shaped, with fusion
crust on the outer shell as you would find orange colored rind on a piece of
Muenster cheese cut from a mold. Loaded with Olivine crystals and not
infected with the Lawrensite disease, since I soaked it in 100% alcohol for
a week after I received it, and then baked it in an oven for a day @350f ,
to get rid of any moisture. The info on how to preserve this stone came from
this very list and was absolutely effective.

Polished on 4 sides, it has not altered its appearance in the last 5 years.
Thanks List.

The olivine gems are green and brown and glisten in any environment that
this stone is displayed in.

Thanks
CharlyV

Theories about Peruvian meteorite discounted
MARK HUME

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

E-mail Mark Hume | Read Bio | Latest Columns
September 26, 2007 at 5:51 AM EDT

VANCOUVER — One of the first scientists to visit the site of a sensational
meteor strike in Peru was Lionel Jackson, of the Geological Survey of Canada,
who was working nearby when a fireball scorched across the sky over Lake
Titicaca a little over a week ago.

Back in his Vancouver office yesterday, Dr. Jackson discounted wild theories
that clouds of alien viruses were released in the collision or that the foreign
body that blasted into the earth, near Carancas, in Peru's Puno province, Sept.
16, was really a spy satellite.

Dr. Jackson says there's little doubt the crater left in the muddy ground in a
farming district was created by a meteor that came from space travelling at a
number of times the speed of sound.

He was finishing up some field work in Bolivia, just across the border from
Carancas, when news reports of the strike reached him last week.

He went to the site the next day, along with several members of the Bolivian
geological survey, with whom he was working on a Canadian International
Development Agency-funded project related to the threat of natural hazards in
the Andes.

They found the meteor had left a crater in the ground, about 12 metres in
diameter, that was largely filled with water.

The crater was a lot smaller than it looks in the [news] photographs ... but as
a geologist, I was really excited to see it. It was just an incredible,
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the site of a meteor strike ... we were
the first scientists in there.

Astrophysicist José Ishitsuka of Peru's Geophysics Institute, travelling
separately, also visited the site and recovered a small magnetic rock fragment.

Dr. Jackson said it is likely a substantial piece of meteorite is still in the
crater, covered with water and mud.

It went into very wet soil. There may be a lot of it still in there, he said.

The meteor strike occurred in a remote area where people survive by growing
potatoes and herding llamas.

The incident caused considerable alarm, with about 200 local people reporting
strange sicknesses and a foul odour emitting from the crater.

Dr. Jackson said those who suddenly fell ill were likely suffering psychosomatic
shock and had not been infected by some kind of space virus released in a cloud
of gas.

People were stressed, he said. I suspect if a meteor went down in the suburbs
of Toronto, flaming across the sky and making all kinds of sounds, a lot of
people would get headaches and report strange illnesses, too.

Dr. Jackson saw no evidence of any sickness when he was there and he and the
colleagues he visited the site with feel fine.

There have been a lot of sensational reports connected to this event, with
everything from the Andromeda Strain escaping in gas clouds to stories that a
spy satellite crashed, he said. But everything I saw is consistent with a
meteor strike.

The Andromeda Strain is a 1971 science fiction film, based on a Michael Crichton
thriller, about scientists investigating a deadly alien virus.

Dr. Jackson said the site is remote and it would be difficult to get a backhoe
and water pumps to the location to conduct a thorough excavation.

We'll have to see if the Peruvian government follows up on that, he said. A
lot of the local people are thinking they could just leave it the way it is and
turn it into a tourist attraction.

Hi Matteo list
If you open up that article it shows three pictures of different
samples of the pieces recovered. The photos, at least in my opinion,
don't give a definitive answer as to what they have. Though the
reports mentions finely disseminated iron of 1 mm in diameter. I guess
we will have to wait for the experts.

Well, even if it was a huge Mesosiderite marble, I'd be glad
to own such a monster slice. Judging from Co data available
for mesosiderites, we once again are confronted with a Co value
that is way too low for the usual Co content measured in MESO's.

Best wishes,

[meteorite-list] eBay Listing Critique Request

2007-09-26 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

After five months of not offering any eBay auctions, I see they have
completely changed how to compose auctions. I am asking List members who are
interested for advice on my listings. I just loaded 28 items, all of which
can be seen at http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnaturesvault under my seller
name, NaturesVault.

Please reply privately as I doubt the List would like the band width
consumption. Please let me know about mistakes, omissions, photos,
enhancements, shipping options, etc. so I can better offer a wide range of
meteorites from planetary, extremely rare all the way down to unclassified
lots and everything in between.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions, it is good to be back!

Best regards,

[meteorite-list] Possible meteorite flies over Kodiak

2007-09-26 Thread Mike Groetz

http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=7132016

Possible meteorite flies over Kodiak

Associated Press - September 26, 2007 2:24 PM ET

KODIAK, Alaska (AP) - Alaska State Troopers are
looking into reports of something -- possibly a
meteorite -- seen over Kodiak this week.

Whatever it was people saw yesterday (Tuesday)
morning, it doesn't appear to have been was an
airplane. No emergency beacon went off and no debris
has been found.

Jennifer Horning, who lives at a ranch on Anton Larson
Bay Road, saw the event while driving her son into
school at about 6:45 a.m. She says the light was near
the Coast Guard's ski chalet.

Horning says it got so bright, her son thought a
helicopter was shining a light on them.

There were reports that meteorites were seen over
Chiniak around that time.

The Coast Guard says an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from
Air Station Kodiak made both low- and high-level
sweeps of the area and found no scarring on the land,
impact crater or fire.

[meteorite-list] Favorite Meteorite Photos, Collage Scrapbook! (MW)

2007-09-26 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

I'm making a collage graphic for the MeteoriteWatch.com website logo
header at the top of the page. I need meteorite photos for it.

I have some of my own and they're good but I had an idea. I wanted to
get more people involved with the site and provide something for
everyone that was helping me as a thank you!

What if I were to the collage with your favorite meteorite photos
in the collage? In exchange for your photo contribution, I'd post a
nice big THANK YOU on the (MW) website for all to see along with a
copy of the photo contributed for the collage. In addition I would
provide a link to your website if you have one.

Unrelated but to add even more excitement to it all, and get even
more people involved I'm making a Digital Meteorite Scrapbook page
here: http://www.meteoritewatch.com/meteorite-scrapbook.htm which
will exhibit every possible type of meteorite art, photo, graphic and
anything else I can think of to add to it. If you have something you
want featured here email me and I'll post it!

Here's a link to a collage I made with some galaxy photos to show you
the idea I had for the meteorite collage:
http://www.meteoritewatch.com/images/universe-banner.jpg

I'll be posting a notice on the site about some charity related
information in the next couple days. Stay tuned for that too...

Happy Hunting!
