Re: [meteorite-list] What's the chances of a meteorite hitting youcar hood?

2008-03-09 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Mike,

Great story. Two observations come to mind:

1.) Was having learned the hard way not to throw
rocks a motivation to CATCHING them so well?

2.) Did anybody think that the teenagers that thought
suckering a 7 year old into doing their dirty work for
them deserved a little fanny-warming as well?

Funny story Sonny, I have one to tell as well.
When I was 7 years old, my brother (13) and aunt (15)
took me to a bridge and told me to throw a rock. I did
and hit a nice new car. The car stopped, the man ran
up the bridge and my brother and aunt took off, I
stood there, petrafied, and the guy caught me and took
me home. My grandfather paid for the broken window,
then whupped me with an elm switch until I learned my
lesson, DONT THROW ROCKS! I will never forget that
whuppin!

[meteorite-list] Ad/ or rescue 15.31 kilo Seymchan pallasite individual.

2008-03-09 Thread Mike Miller
Hello everyone I purchased a 15.31 kilo Seymchan Pallasite to cut this
year in Tucson. I have since decided I would rather sell it whole if
someone wants it. If not I will cut it so this is a last call to see
if anyone wants to keep a big individual whole. I am just trying to
get my money back here I will sell it for $8500 and I am making
nothing on the deal. It is a pallasite with olivine present on several
sides. It also has some character and is the only whole individual I
saw in Tucson. So if you want one this may be the only one you have a
chance at. I will send pictures to anyone who is interested. Thanks
Shipping is your choice and paid by the buyer.

Paco,

Good catch! I searched maps of Mendoza but didn't catch the terrain
pattern. With your article it was easy to find the area shown on
McCartney's map. Here is the map from Google and also McCartney's map. The
braided stream is there and everything right on down to the little race
track near the bottom of the Google map that is near the notebook on the
other.

Re: [meteorite-list] Another clue to the Mystery Fall Game

2008-03-09 Thread Sterling K. Webb
The guessing game goes on! (And it may have been
solved, it seems.)

I was about to say to put Argentina back on the list
after I was informed that Argentina has extensive wine
regions:

Hi Sterling
You're wrong about vineyards in Argentina. There are
very large areas of the Mendoza and San Juan provinces
with them. Actually Mendoza is called the province of
the wine! There are several tours especially designed
to visit the different vineyards. It is said that the best
Malbec in the world came from here...
Eduardo

Thanks, Eduardo! You should have just posted to the
List as it now it appears that Mendoza was the spot!

There are wine growing areas everywhere. Alex Seidel
mentioned Apple Wine in Germany, but here in southern
Illinois, there is an old wine region on the lower Illinois River
Valley near me, with vineyards 150 years old, established
by German settlers that came after the 1848 unpleasantness,
now producing world-class wines with the help of California
money: http://www.illinoiscellars.com/

They produce a fine Bavarian Apple Wine, my personal
favorite, but no meteorites as yet.

Hi, Guessers,

Southern hemisphere, since the grapes are ripe. The
winegrowing latitudes contain Australia, New Zealand,
Madagascar, South Africa, Argentina, and Chile.

No point in hunting Australia as a stone may be unlikely
to leave the country. I guess the same for New Zealand.
Madagascar, South Africa, and Argentina do not have
regions "dominated" by vineyards.

That leaves Chile, which does have such regions.

McCartney, did you bring back any of the wine that
came from those vineyards? Meteorite Vineyard Wine!

If it is really Chile, list member Rodrigo Martinez from Chile would
surely have heard about that fall, too and would immediately have
visited the site of that fall ... probably faster than anyone else.

2008-03-09 Thread AL Mitterling

Hi Sonny and all,

Your very lucky it hit the hood and not the windshield as it could have
come right through and struck you, possibly seriously injuring you or
worst. While all kids do things from time to time that they really
shouldn't, some things are just down right dangerous and people have
been killed by that sort of thing before. I try never to drive directly
under a pass when someone is just standing there. Of course you don't
know if they might try to drop something on you from the other side. In
any case glad you were not injured and I hope the kids learned a very
big lesson. Looks like they need a constructive hobby but I am thinking
in this case that maybe meteorites might be a bad idea until they grow
up a bit :-) Best!

Hi All,

Have you ever thought of a meteorite hitting your car? Better yet,
while you were in it? Well that's not what happened today! I was
driving home after buying some paint for the house when out of nowhere
a rock the size of a baseball hits my hood and then smashes into my
windshield causing it to break and crack . I was driving around 70
mph. At first I thought it might have come from a truck in front of
me or one going the other direction on the highway. The only problem
was there were no other vehicles in front or going the other
directions. So what just happened ? The only thing I could think of
was someone threw the rock from the walkway under the freeway or
something. I slammed on my brakes and turned the truck around . I was
lucky there was a turn around at the location. Georgia gave me a look
like the one you see just before you get in a crash! I drove just
above the walkway and parked my truck and told Georgia to call 911 and
tell them what happened. I could see to the west, no one in sight but
not to the east. I ran down the hill and into the tunnel. Not a good
move, not knowing what to expect. At this point I was pissed off and
not really thinking right. I ran under the freeway to the other side
and on top of a dirt embankment. There they were, running into another
tunnel only 500 ' in front of me! Damn it! I never new kids could run
like cheetahs! The only thing I could do was jump back into the ditch
and try to cut them off. As I got closer to the opening of the other
drainage ditch I could see these kids coming back out of the opening.
The only problem , I was out of breath from when I ran down the hill
to get onto the walkway . You have to remember I was still trying to
get out of doing the painting before this happened. Let alone run at
high speed at any time! When I finally got over to the kids you should
have seen the look on their faces. Like deer in the headlights! At
this moment I knew I could take the 7 yr old but the two 13 yr olds
might be tough! Just teasing! I said which one of you threw the rock.
The first kid said the other kid that ran the other direction did
it.The second kid said he ran the opposite direction. Ok let me get
this straight the kid that threw the rock ran two different
directions? Well yes and no they said. By this time I had regained
some of my breath and decided to question the tougher 7 yr old. When I
asked the kid who threw the rock, he started crying and said "I don't
want to go to jail" and would not look at his two other friends. I
almost started crying after seeing this, but I was still out of breath
and I'd seen this technique used in the movies before! About this time
two police cars pulled up. The police started asking the kids what
happened and the one kid told on his friend that he threw the rock. I
forgot to say while I was chasing the kids I was trying to give
Georgia the direction and location on the cell phone. I was happy to
see the kids father pull up and then the look on the kids faces. I
felt bad for the little one, he was still crying lying on the
sidewalk. The good part is no one got hurt and I got a little
exercise! If this ever happens again I hope it is a meteorite.

Did you pick up and look at that rock?
If you are very lucky, maybe the kid picked up a meteorite!!;-)

But seriously, I hope the father is going to pay for all the damage to

And maybe you can get the kids to do the painting, as punishment.
