Re: [meteorite-list] What sex is your meteorite

2010-04-12 Thread WS Schroer

Shawn,

I just checked, all my meteorites are hermaphrodites. So when I talk ABOUT
them I use the word 'it'. But in case I would want to talk TO them I
wouldn't know which title to use. Is it Mr., Mrs., Ms. I have no idea.
But that's not all. Which language do I use for my NWAs?

Your question wasn't silly at all and it was probably one of the most
important ever asked on this list.

Cheers
Werner

Hello Listers,

I have been meaning to ask people what sex they would consider their
meteorites to be and if the names of the meteorite would be the final factor
in determining sex? Or is this a silly question for me to ask in the first
place?

Why I ask this question is because alot of times I hear people refer to a
classic car as a female, like look at her she's a beauty. I have even
caught myself referring to some of the meteorites I own as a male of female.

For instance, I would consider Almahata Sitta as female because the way
Almahata Sitta sounds has this romantic feel to it when I say her name. Or
the Weston, I would definitely call it a male meteorite because just the
word sounds bold and strong when I say his name.

Which sex are your meteorites and what determining factors could dictate
which way this would go?

Look here for rings with meteorites.

This guy is a true artist. We got our wedding rings from him, handmade by

My fiance' recently (and with no encouragement by me) came across rings
made of meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a
ring for my wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of course
hadn't even considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a
great idea for my ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK,
I'm not allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the Iron
used, but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better
choice to limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon
Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these
three have the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

To: warren3...@hotmail.com

Good Evening Warren; Thank you for your inquiry. It's somewhat of a relief to
receive your respectful courteous questions. I thank you for your sincere
curiosity and due diligence.
Smaller, identical pairings of this larger Martian meteorite have, indeed,
been sliced, polished and examined to reveal all of the impact shock
metamorphisms required of a Martian meteorite. These metamorphisms include
terrestrially weathered fusion crust (still visibly evident), and regmaglyph
thumb prints. Closer, microscopic inspections reveal metals of chromite,
iridium and titanium. The major metal is chromite suspended in neosilicates of
olivine, with iridium titanium blebs throughout the cut polished face.
Most importantly, the olivine neosilicate has been shocked melted to a
blueish-black to nearly extinct, along with pyroxenes and glass-filled impact
fissures. Feldspars of augite have been shock melted as well, to what is
referred to as diaplectic glass, or maskenylite.
This specimen, along with several other distinct specimens, were analysed by
Actlabs of Ontario, Canada. The results were positive for both
extraterrestrial and planetary origins. The high SiO2 content of up to 85%,
along with high CaO and low MgO Fe2O3 levels, indicate water as a major
morphism influence. The Martian atmosphere, examined by Viking, would give
credence to what our lab results have, so far, confirmed. Further analysis'
are now being performed at ASU UNM to further confirm these preliminary
findings. We do expect the classification process within a few weeks. But as
you know, these universities research labs can take some time to complete their
analysis'.
This Martian meteorite is just one of many pristine specimens located,
collected analysed from the Uncompahgre Strewn Field in Western Colorado.
This field, which has experienced several meteoritic impact events over the
last several thousand years, also includes Lunar meteorites, as well as
asteroidal Ordinary Primitive Chondrites. This is an impressive area for
such events. The extent of finds increases on a daily basis.
This field was discovered identified by Yours Truly. I am a well-studied
amateur meteoritst, yet I assure you that I have followed the science of
Richard Norton, Lawrence Chitwood, Harvey Nininger and numerous other credible
reliable sources to qualify accredit this site as one of the most important
discoveries in a century, or more.
Furthermore, I have just recently recovered the third Lunar meteorite strewn
field in North America. This discovery was a result of a witnessed bolide by
two individuals. This fireball, ended up to be a large (daytime) event and
culminated in the collection of several thousand fragments whole stones of
definite Lunar origin. These new, black fusion-crusted stones are not
magnetic and are definitely Lunar! I will defy any lunar geochemist to refute
this find, along with the Unco finds! Please stay tuned for more information
on this find.
Again, thank you for your courtesy professional inquiry.
All the Best!

 Who found it?

[meteorite-list] AD-Auctions Ending Today Instead Of Tuesday

2010-04-12 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

I have many excellent auctions ending this afternoon instead of my normal
Tuesday. You may be able to pick up some great bargains since most expect
these
auctions to end tomorrow. All of today's auctions were started at just 99
cents
and many only have opening bids.

I plan on heading to the field later this week and next week to do some
long overdue meteorite hunting. Next weeks auctions will also end on a Monday
for the same reason. This gives me an extra day in the field each week and
keeps my shipping in sync for those who pay fairly quick.

All Auctions Can Be Found At This link:
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/raremeteorites!_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

Thank you for looking and if you are bidding, good luck.

[meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day - April 12, 2010

2010-04-12 Thread bernd . pauli
Richard wrote: Beautiful Laurence!
Jeff K. wrote: WOW!!!

http://www.rocksfromspace.org/April_12_2010.html

Hello Laurence, Richard, Jeff and List,

This is an exceptionally beautiful polysomatic barred olivine chondrule!
The unusual pentagonal arrangement of the olivine bars may be the result
of a euhedral olivine crystal at the center of these 5 sets of parallel olivine
bars. The contours of the (almost) euhedral crystal are still readily
recognizable.
The crystal itself is either in optical extinction in this photo or it is no
longer
there.

Instead of growing inward from the once molten droplet (which would have
resulted in a normal barred olivine chondrule), the bars probably grew
along the sides of the (almost) euhedral crystal at its center.

*If* I am right with these suppositions, the subhedral crystal at the center
had already solidified when the pentagonal bars started growing and thus served
as a nucleus along whose sides the bars grew the way we see them in the pic.

The different interference colors of the pentagonal bars are due to the fact
that they are oriented at different angles to each other.

An almost identical polysomatic BO chondrule can be admired on p. 114
of our late Richard Norton's Encyclopedia of Meteorites!

Best wishes,

Bernd

However, I'd guess the LAST beer helps more than the first...

Hello Orrin / List,

I've heard of this last year. I personally think Ebay should be contacted
regarding the situation to determine if they are obligated to assist the man
that left the negative feedback. Ethically, with all the money Ebay makes off
of us, they should defend a buyer that did what they asked him to do.

Imagine the lawsuit from a $17,000,000 purchase of a meteor-wrong. :) (yes,

While it's unfortunate to see this type of litigation, I'll bet the buyer could
have avoided the suit if he had simply stated the facts and not made a
judgement about the ethics of the seller. I have rarely left negative or

months to deliver item, wrong item, no response to email etc.). Sometimes our

Shame on Ebay for not preventing this from ever happening. Ebay makes the rules
and knowing how scummy lawyers are they should have seen this coming and taken
steps to prevent such litigation from ever happening. Perhaps by closing an

bail this guy out here and pay his legal fees until they can boot this scum

[meteorite-list] message from Vincent Jacques

Hi List,

Vincent Jacques, who is not able to send posts

Happy speculations...

Zelimir

Dear listoïdes

I would be very curious to have your ideas about
the following meteorite, here above the story:

In 2002, I have purchased a mix meteorites- earth
stones from a Moroccan dealer during the
Brussel’s mineral show. 60% of them was
meteorites (many chondrites, one little eucrite,
and some magnetics strange stones, terrestrials
following my desert meteorite experience)

One of them showed a very strange
lithology. Earth rock or meteorite? My first
impression after cutting was “a simple rock from
Sahara”… but… a little magnetic attraction on one
side and some cm² of very thick chocolate
alteration on other side (old fusion crust?) asked to more investigations.

The first question: “Meteorite or not?” has been
resolved in 2006 by prof Jedwab (University of
Brussel’s) during a quick microprobe
analysis. “With lot of hesitation, it’s a
meteorite, congratulation” He said: “probably a
very very old weathered chondrite, no
interesting… perhaps achondrite, but my analysis
is not perfect. I found only one little Fe-Ni
flake. I think that was a mud aggregate, but it’s a meteorite”

Other visual submission to prestigious
institutions was blocked during the first
contact: “Oh, if it’s a meteorite, it is so
weathered, no interest to study it… probably a little ordinary chondrite.”

Recently, I have submitted a fragment of this
“rejected ugly meteorite” to a Belgian
laboratory, who studies several meteorites
including Antarctica meteorites from summer 2009-2010 collect.

The first result is fall some days later: The
meteorite is very close to ureilite group, but…
there is a little problem. It contains an unusual
part of pure carbon. Analysis continues at this time.

We have searched equivalent meteorites, without
result, except for Almahata Sitta meteorite.

On internet, the following link shows a
electronic photo of Almahata sitta. Photo's are
very similar. Please, compare it with following

2010-04-12 Thread Warren Sansoucie

Hello list - Vincent,

I have several pieces that ,once cut ,look very similar to yours. Interesting
that it was confirmed to be a meteorite. All of mine that look like that reside
in my wrong jar along with all the other hematite and magnetite pieces sold
to me as meteorites.

I can't really contribute to your search for more information, but I would be
interested in what you do find out.

If anyone ever wants to look at any of my 'culls' for the off chance there is
something to be discovered, let me know and I will get them to you. If any list
member finds that we have something of interest or value, they can keep the
portion I send them. Otherwise, the pieces may remain in the jar with the
picture of Happy Madison proclaiming , The price is wrong, Bob!.

I understand the problem with lab time and the good folks working there not
having the time to investigate a possible weathered and rusty find.

I'm sure you could convince a scientist to work it in... if you offered to
build a new wing for the university.

Hello Zelimir, and all,

Almahata Sitta is really a conglomerate of many different types of
meteorites. So far at least half a dozen totally different ones have been
found
there, some ureilites fragments but also some EL, EH and even H. It would help
if Vincent would contact Prof. Bischoff in Muenster since he is the one
doing the classification.
Or he could also ask Siegfried Haberer.
And if anyone is interested I do have the latest report on Almahata Sitta.

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rovers Update: March 31 - April 7, 2010

2010-04-12 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Remains Silent - sols 2219-2226,
March 31 - April 07, 2010:

Spirit remains silent at her location called Troy on the west side of
Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol
2210 (March 22, 2010).

It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has
turned off all sub-systems, including communication. The rover will use
all available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. When the
batteries recover to a sufficient state of charge, Spirit will wake up
and begin to communicate. It is not known when that will happen, so the
project has been listening for any X-band signal from Spirit through the
Deep Space Network (DSN) every day. The Mars Odyssey orbiter is also
listening over selected Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) relay passes for any
signal from Spirit. It may be weeks to months before Spirit communicates.

Total odometry is unchanged at 7,730.50 meters (4.80 miles).

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Sharp Turns Make Driving Difficult -
sols 2200-2204, April 2-6, 2010:

Opportunity had a couple of difficult moves this week.

After taking some time to recharge her batteries, the rover attempted a
drive on Sol 2202 (April 4, 2010). That drive stopped after the initial
arc turn due to elevated current draw in the motors on the right side of
the rover. The rover is between two ripples with the space in between
forming a bowl. The rover had to push harder on the right to make the
sharp turn. Conservatively-set current limits stopped the drive, as a
way for controllers on the ground to assess the driving conditions
before proceeding.

With everything looking okay, another drive on Sol 2204 (April 6, 2010),
was commanded. It too began with a short, sharp arc. This time the drive
stopped after a short distance because of wheel slip exceeding the limit
of 40 percent. Again ground controllers assessed the conditions and
found no problems. With these sharp turns, the rover's wheels must
impart more thrust. When the wheel thrust exceeds the shear strength of
the terrain, slip occurs.

Opportunity will drive again on Sol 2206 (April 8, 2010). This time the
rover is already aligned with the drive direction, so no sharp turns are
needed. Extra slip checks will be performed to make sure there are no
terrain issues. As of Sol 2204 (April 6, 2010), the solar array energy
production was 235 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (tau) of 0.371
(from Sol 2199) and a dust factor of 0.500.

Total odometry is 20,247.56 meters (20.25 kilometers, or 12.58 miles).

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

2010-04-12 Thread Peter Scherff

Hi,

I used to wear a solid Gibeon ring. I had no allergic reaction but the skin
near the ring turned brown. When it came time for me to get a wedding ring I
got Gibeon lined with gold. I have had no problems with it. However the
etched surface has been obliterated, I guess that I am rough on my jewelry.

Thanks,

Peter

Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

My fiance' recently (and with no encouragement by me) came across rings made
of meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a ring for
my wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of course hadn't even
considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a great idea for
my ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK, I'm
not allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the Iron
used, but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better
choice to limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon
Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these three
have the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

I've hunted with him before, he's a great guy and a good hunter.

Just curious of the ebay seller is on this list?

I made one purchase from him in the past and see he has scores of meteorites
 up right now.

 Thanks
