Re: [meteorite-list] Wisconsin Meteorite Hunt.
Bill, I will say this once and ONCE only! Don't EVER call me a liar again! You're memory is seriously flawed! I DID draw you a map with an X marks the spot direct to a confirmed find you know it and I know it! And the "NOs" you received from me were for stones and information I was under promise not to reveal. Do not make the mistake of twisting that information for your benefit Bill! I will call you on it... People on this list can decide for themselves based on your history. I think that speaks for itself. Eric Quoting bill kies : Eric, It was a pleasure meeting you. I won't publicly argue with you other than to say that you may have mentioned the general area you were hunting in but you certainly did not give me a treasure map with X marks the spot, lol. I distinctly remember many resounding NO'S when asking about new finds. Believe me, I understand that. Good luck and I hope to see you soon. I'll be back up in a day or two. I need a few days of good food and a little rest. Hey Bill, List, Did you bother to talk to Sonny and ask him anything or are you assuming he'd never been on that land? Perhaps he'd already had previous permission? I don't know... But to attack Sonny so brashly and call him names PUBLICLY that are completely out of character for him, seems to me to be much more rude than him walking past you in the field... Need I mention that I drew you a map, literally where X marked the spot of the area where a NICE stone was found on the small end where I knew there were most likely more pieces and so a good chance you might make a find or two. Yet there was no reciprocation at all from you... Who's greedy Bill? The one who ignores you, or the one who holds his information even after information is shared with him? By the way, I'll keep "pumpin" the lack of material too. Until there's more confirmed, it's ALL rumor! Regards, Eric Quoting bill kies : Well, I just returned from my third trip with 12 days walking on cobbs and I have to say that the most pathetic display of rude bs was that of Sonny what's his name. The man pulled up his truck, looked through us like we were non-exixtant ignoring the fact, as we protested, that we had previous permission to search the property in question. Sonny was so aggressive that he didn't even notice that one of our team members was a 77 year old man that was the Patriarch of the family that owned the land. He ignored us and hauled ass straight up to the front door trying to conive his way in. Nice work Sonny. You deserve a big pat on the back. You belong in Georgia. You're a real inspiration to us all you greedy S*B. Bill PS: Keep pumping the lack of material. Time will tell. Hi All, I just returned from my second hunt in Wisconsin. I hunted a total of 9 days in the field. I really enjoyed spending time with the other hunters and got to know some of the locals too. Without a doubt, Wisconsin is the friendliest state I have ever visited. Everyone would invite you into their homes, also allow you to hunt for meteorites on their property. I even had a chance to milk a cow. I want to say thanks to Rob Matson and Mark Fries for the great work with the Doppler Radar. Terry Boudreaux and Karl Aston played a major role in gaining access to hunt many of the properties. These 2 guys are awesome. What really made this trip enjoyable was spending time with everyone hunting. After 9 days of hunting I was able to find 3 meteorites, one with the assistance of Brix (my dog) and the other 2 on my second trip out. The total of my finds is 366.4 grams. I hope to post pictures from the hunt on my website within the next week. The rumors of many stones being recovered is simply not true. Out of 6 guys hunting for 4 days( covering a lot of ground ) only 2 stones were recovered. On the previous hunt with 10 guys hunting only 4 stones were recovered. By far, the best complete stone I have seen is Rob Wesel's. Another kudo's goes out to Joe Kerchner for his magnificent find. Eric Wichman also made some outstanding finds. Many of the fields are now being plowed and planted. Further recovery of meteorites is becoming more difficult. It would be nice to compile a list of everyone's finds to determine the TKW so far. Good luck to all of the guys that are still out in the field. Sonny __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list

[meteorite-list] AD - Very Updated Website
Hello everybody, Please go take a look at my re-organized, updated and (I hope!) much improved website! It really was high time I did something with that very looong Meteorite page. It has now been chopped in two pages, one for the IRONS and Stony-Irons, and one for all the STONES, chondrites or achondrites. I certainly hope that it will make your shopping much easier. Go to the NEWS page for more details. And careful with the Links, they have changed too, Impact Glass, Tektites and Impact Breccias are now sharing a page labeled IMPACTITES. And while I was at it I added over 100 pieces; as usually they are highlighted in RED. Some of the more noteworthy: a nice assortment of Tatahouine specimens, from 27.99g to a huge 97.06g courtesy of Alain Carion, Marjalahti (thank you Darryl), a huge Esquel slices, 354.4g., a large (7480g) end cut of Zacatecas 1969, some rare micros (Apt, Tagish, Yatoor,) and of course the great pieces I acquired from ASU (New Concord, Murray, Haskell,..). And Alain Carion's new book is now proudly presented on my BOOKS-PRINTS page. Lots of THIN-SECTIONS still available, and that page will be updated next. And, last but not least, ALMAHATA SITTA! (also known as Asteroid 2008 TC3) specimens are still available, just click on the name on the NEWS page to go to that separate page. Any problem, broken link, typos, just let me know. Thanks. [meteorite-list] Photos of my Wisconsin Slices are up
Hello listees. Again I'm sorry for the long long delay, I was going to add the photos when soccer practice was over, but we had some family issues after practice and took up a few hours, I have been editing the pics since. I am adding more pics every few minutes. If you do not see anything that interests you yet, check back soon. For those who purchased slices already I sent them out this afternoon. They all look as good or better than these ones. I didnt have the time to photograph them before I had to ship them, if I did I would not have been able to ship until tomorrow afternoon. I cherry picked them for you, they all have crust and great features. All of the pieces are absolutely gorgeous. I love this material, some of the best looking stuff I have ever seen. I am absolutely sure you will all love them. If anyone is not satisfied with those or any others that you purchase, I will accept returns, however I am absolutely certain that everyone will be more than satisfied. most weigh at least a tenth of a gram over. Here are the pieces I have available, more will be posted within the next hour or so, every few minutes a new piece will be added. As I remember it was late in the day with little time left to hunt. As we pulled up there was a gentleman on an ATV, 2 guys standing at the back of a truck talking, and one guy leaning over a car talking thru the passenger window to the driver. As I approached the guy on the ATV I asked whose land it was, the man I spoke to WAS the PATRIARCH of the land. We joked about me riding on the back of his ATV and how much he would charge me per hour to drive around in his son's cornfield. He then suggested that I go talk to his son at the house at the bottom of the hill and ask for permission for my friends and I to hunt the land. As I was walking away you approached us and said Hi. We introduced ourselves ,I shook your hand. We then drove down to the bottom of the hill to talk to the landowner. The landowner greeted us and said "You can hunt this land all you want". We discussed a 50/50 split of the finds and a dollar amount per gram for his half if we were lucky enough to find any. He then explained the property boundaries and wished us luck. Bill you have to remember this was late in the day and we only had an hour and a half left of sunlight. We only wanted to hunt the small corner of the property to plan the next days hunt. You have to understand we spent thousands of dollars to come and do this hunt between airfare, rent a car and hotel. We were on a mission to get as much done as possible in a few short days. We are also working on mapping the finds and at the end will present the map to the University. Time was of the essence that evening. Bill , you would also think that when we returned the following morning we were greeted by BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON and spent a few minutes joking around. At this point I am sure they would have said something if it was such a big deal. It is up to the landowners who they allow to hunt their property, not you. Bill as with this post and with the history of some of your other posts to the list you can understand why we did not spend a lot of time talking with you. Your bad reputation precedes you. Also for all of the meteorites that you are saying are being recovered please enlighten me. So for the 12 days you and your team spent out there please let us know how many kilos you recovered. Re: [meteorite-list] WI strewn field map(preliminary) is Ready- and data request.
Hi Atul, I read that Rob Matson has given you most of the information already. This is the EXACT same information that I would have given you. Rob has almost all of my current information. So it seems you already have what you need. As with all data I wanted to get the ok from the guys still hunting in the area. The data that we recovered was from many hours in the field and from other meteorite hunters working the area. As a courtesy to them, I could not release their information without an ok from these guys. Atul, I also want to make it clear that I never requested any find locations from you (nor DO I need any) at any point in the conversation. During your phone call this morning, I told you that I would be tied up most of the day and would call you later. You seemed awfully persistent in getting this information. A couple of friends of mine still have plans on hunting a few more weeks. The reason I was reluctant with the information, is from what happened at the Candle Factory where you told the land owner that you could get 50- 60 dollars per gram on any meteorite found on her land. After you said this, Joe was kicked off the land. With these tactics no meteorites would be recovered and possibly lost. It took 9 guys a day and a half of walking in the fields to locate the pieces in this area and from your actions no one else will be hunting this land. We walked many miles in the field to locate these finds and I wanted to make sure I looked out for the best interest of my fellow hunters. Maybe next time instead of driving your car around and talking to the land owners you can join us for the hunt for 8 to 10 hours a day. This may help you gain some perspective on where I am coming from. Re: [meteorite-list] WI Meteorites?
Mike, How much time did you spend in the fields? How many farms did you search? How many people that live in the area did you bother to sit down with and talk to? I saw over 50 stones recovered by hunters and locals that never heard of this list. I sold my first stone to a guy from Racine. He never heard of this list. The met-list is not the center of the universe although I have to admit that it is the first place I send every "local" I meet so they can see what things are selling for first hand and get a feel for who they're dealing with. I also suggest they search ebay for "Wisconsin meteorites" before they sell. Naturally this skunks a lot of deals for me but at least I feel good knowing they aren't being ripped off by offers of 5 bucks a gram for oriented stones. Take that bucket off your head and open your eyes. By the way, I said plenty left not plenty to go around. Re: [meteorite-list] WI strewn field map(preliminary) is Ready- and data request.
Hi all Just returned from WI- 3 more days of data. I had honored sonny clarys request to me to not release data or the prelim strewn field map last week monday with the understanding that his group would provide me with data of all their finds. As of this morning sonny has advised me that he or his group will not be providing any data to me for a few weeks. I have decided to make my compliation of data for approx 75 finds public. If you are in the area and need an area to search I pls email me off list with (WI strewn field map) and I will provide you with data- or call me- if you need an area now. Please do provide reasons you would need the data- search, research or dealer. If you have a confirmed find- with pics and weight- pls email it to off list- with WI data in the subject line. I am especially curious about the 2+ kg piece that has now disappeared. Did some dealer buy it and doesn't want anyone to know lest the price fall. I have a pic of the 2 kg if anyone wishes to see it. I also have a bearing on the 6 larger pieces that went thataway- in case anyone wishes to chase them down. I believe the best way to recover stones in this and all falls is the free unrestricted sharing of find and modelling data. I thank Rob matson for his help and support, and all others who helped. He claims to have sanded a Campo down to #400 but could not get a Widmanstatten pattern, although he did get a beautiful pattern using the traditional Nitric method. My son, Jim, and I posted an article in the November 2002 issue of the Meteorite Times about preparing and etching irons using Ferric Chloride (which is the same material as used in the Radio Shack etchant). The method has been used widely since that time with outstanding success by many and with superior results, so there is now an undisputed 8 year positive history. Etches show more contrast and subtle details come out more readily, and fears of ferric chloride use have been put to rest as the specimens are not rusting and crumbling. I think the problem of the person in posting his negative experience was that after grinding down to a #400 grit that he did not then polish out the surface. Unlike preparing an iron to etch with nitric acid, the surface wants to have a highly reflective mirror-like surface before etching. As we say in the article, however, every meteorite is different and can react differently to different circumstances, so he may have just had an unusual, but uncommon, experience. Re: [meteorite-list] pics of slices coming in the AM,
I want to thank everyone for all of the kind kind words. It makes me feel much better. I also just want to make sure everyone knows that the U of W DID NOT cut this stone. I do not want anymore trouble caused over this. I cant believe it happened in the first place. We both lost out. Me and the U, they were going to get a nice donation. They can thank the members who called and bit#$%! them out over it. The guys I talked to up there were very nice and very helpful. I still may donate a slice of a few grams to them. They have very very little material from this fall, they should have more, there is no doubt. Thanks again for all of the kind words from everyone, you all know who you are, there are too many to list right now, but THANKS!! and I will be posting the pics soon. I am on my way to the schools here in town to show all the kids my endpiece and let some actually touch what they seen fly through the sky. I can't wait to see how they react, I have already shared it with some classes and have been asked to come back and share with the rest of them, this is really cool for me. Sonny was so aggressive that he didn't even notice that one of our team members was a 77 year old man that was the Patriarch of the family that owned the land. Re: [meteorite-list] Wisconsin Meteorite Hunt.
Wow Bill, you really seem to remember the chain of events much differently than I do. There is no doubt that there may be a lot of material in the field but it is yet be found. With the planting going on there is a good chance the material may be lost forever. And as for Georgia, you're right my heart belongs to Georgia. Hi Fred and all, Outstanding amount of people who came for the event and glad you were able to have a hands on display which I am sure touched more than several of the scouts and their parents. In a day and age that kids seem to be staring into the computer screen and not bothering with much else, it nice to know there are good kids that are getting out and learning about the real world. To touch a piece of outer space and be connected to another world is such an exciting thing that will stay with some of those kids and adults for a long time. One Thousand and Eight Hundred (1,800) Cub and Boy Scouts with many of their family members came to work on their astronomy and geology merit badges. I didn't have a chance to talk to every one but I was very busy for over six hours. I had nice fresh Allende, Thuathe, regmaglypted Sikhote, Sikhote schrapnal, Gibeon slices, Toluca etched end cut, NWA 869, Wells Creek shattercones, Libyan Desert Glass, Phillipianite tektite, Vredefort impact melt breccia, Canyon Diablo individual and spheroids, and slices of a NWA L3 chondrite, Johnstown Diogenite, and NWA 047 Eucrite. The kids loved the opportunity to get a hands on experience with real meteorites. I am already planning a bigger and better display for next year. Joe and Listers, Congrats on your find. To be able to experience this is something that some of us on the List look forward to or have already experienced, and thank you for sharing your story with us on the List Joe :). As for cutting up your WI meteorite find, all I can say is do what you please, because the bottom line is at the end of the day, your family and you come first. Me personally, I feel by cutting this meteorite allows you to share your story with the meteorite community and not just one or two people if you had kept the meteorite whole or cut it in half. I feel that some of the collectors on the List that stress that cutting meteorites is wrong might have a good point. if that's how they collect, but there are many ways to collect meteorites, not just there way, which seems elitist to me. Keep it alive Joe and thank you for sharing your experience with the List and allowing List members/collectors/the science community the opportunity to own a piece of history and your story from the WI meteorite fall. [meteorite-list] Fw: etching with radio shack etchant
I was just browsing through some of the posts on Joes Skyrockcafe website when I ran across a post from a collector who was unhappy with the Radio Shack etchant for iron meteorites. In fact, they do just as well if not better than when etched with nitric. (But that is a topic for another day.) I think the problem of the person in posting his negative experience was that after grinding down to a #400 grit that he did not then polish out the surface. Unlike preparing an iron to etch with nitric acid, the surface wants to have a highly reflective mirror-like surface before etching. As we say in the article, however, every meteorite is different and can react differently to different circumstances, so he may have just had an unusual, but uncommon, experience. He may have a very different experience with a different Campo. (I have many Ferric-etched slices of Campos in my personal collection and they are all doing well.) For God's sake Joe, Quit apologizing for doing what you want to do with your own find. You didn't steal it, or con somebody out of it, you put your sweat and treasure into finding it legally and above board. It's yours and I resent what you are being put through because of your honestly and openly telling us about the find and your decision as to it's disposition. I hope you and your boys had a wonderful time together pulling off a successful hunt and that it will always be happily remembered. I personally thank you for making it possible for those of us who couldn't afford the time, or the money, to hunt the fall to have an opportunity to purchase a specimen at a reasonable price. When I hold I hold it in my hands, I will think of it's origin, it's journey through time and space to the earth and you and your children being the ecstatic finders. You took some of the meteorite from your hand and put it in mine so I could share. Thank you. Re: [meteorite-list] Wisconsin Meteorite Hunt.
Joe, I related the story exactly as it happened. Maybe you should re-read my original post in an effort to understand it. If my composition was unclear contact me off-list and I will explain.
