[meteorite-list] a big thanks to those who donated

2010-08-08 Thread steve arnold
Hi again list. As you all know I sold off my main collection of meteorites to
pay off a bad credit card, thus leaving me with no collection except the primary
one. Also a while back I asked list members to chime in as to who all got
freebies from me.Well I got a big response.I also asked them,if would be
willing
to donate back at least one of those freebies back to me to help me restart my
collection on a much smaller scale. And I only asked if they wanted to.They were
under no obligation to give me anything. And that was totally
understandable.Well
to my surprised I got over 25 freebies myself back.I want to say a BIG thanks
to
all those dear list members who gave.Well I only collect small now, 150 grams
or
less. I want to also thank don hurkot who donated to me a 530 gram full slice
of
SEYMCHAN.A total beaut. There are laot great people.During this time I fully
realized that meteorites are very special and I will never have anymore
givaways.I have lost to much over the last 6 years but I have also made alot
people with them.So if you ever want to donate any back I'll accept them,if not
no problem. This is a great hobby and its got great people to boot and is a very
hard habit to break,a quote from "chicago the group.I need to get this off my
chest and I look forward to the next find or fall.

[meteorite-list] AD - NWA 6291 Angrite Ebay listings ending today - updates

2010-08-08 Thread Greg Catterton
Hi to all, I hope everyone is doing well.

I have 2 samples of the King of angrites, NWA 6291 listed on ebay that started
out at only .99 ending in about 10 hours. Both still at under $2.00 each but
with a very nice amount of watchers.

There is not very much of NWA 6291 left, most have been placed into
institutions and are off the collectors market, likely for good.

The main mass will likely also be placed into an institution collection this
week. If you want a nice slice of this, this time to get it is now, I doubt I
will have any left by this time next month.

Feel free to make reasonable offers on what is left. (as of now, only 6 slices
are left, the rest is smaller sub gram material)

You can find my ebay listings here:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZwanderingstarmeteoritesQQhtZ-1

You can find what is left of the NWA 6291 slices not listed on ebay here:
http://www.wanderingstarmeteorites.com/NWA_6291.php

Note - the two 8.4 gram slices are on hold currently, but if anyone is
interested, I will put your name down for one if it should become available.

Dont miss your chance to own a piece of this incredible meteorite that yielded
the only translucent anorthite slices of angrite on Earth!!!

[meteorite-list] AD - Auctions Ending Today and Personal Notes

2010-08-08 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

Please take a look at the auctions I have ending this afternoon if you want to
secure rare and valuable pieces for your collection. I never run reserves and
start most items out at just 99 cents incurring risks that are great. In most
cases, this material has been selling seriously below my costs this summer. I
run these auctions for three reasons.

1.) To recover a portion of the enormous investment I have into this avocation.

2.) To share my enthusiasm for these rare specimens with others

3.) I believe that the public has the right to share in these rarities

These auctions have been taking up a lot of time and making it difficult for me
to get in as much field time as I like. Once I reach my arbitrary goal of
20,000 specimens sold this fall, I will reevaluate my situation, probably step
down and enjoy other aspects of this great hobby. I will then solicit the rest
on my non-personal inventory for sale all at once or donation depending on an
accountant's input. I will keep you informed. In the meantime, enjoy the many
bargains that will be available over the next few months.

[meteorite-list] Laughlin, NV Crater?

2010-08-08 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List,

I observed what looks somewhat like a large impact crater surrounding me right
here in sunny and friendly Laughlin, NV. I was checking out the Colorado River
for the Rockin the River Regatta next weekend on Google Earth and noticed I
live
on the edge of a giant circular formation. Here is the Google Earth link:

Possibly, a hike is in order or it is just my imagination prompting me to
challenge the hot weather. It has cooled down to around 116 degrees so maybe a
backyard mountain hike is in order. I do not know what the circular structure
is, my guess a natural formation not related to an impact. Maybe somebody with
more knowledge of the geology in this area can clue me in.

Best Regards,

Adam

Re: [meteorite-list] AD - Auctions Ending Today and Personal Notes

2010-08-08 Thread Richard Kowalski
Unfortunately this list had a bit of a jam today and from what I can tell
almost no posts went out for many hours.

This announcement is indeed sad news Adam. As I look over my collection I find
a significant percentage of specimens came from the Hupe Collection. All but
one of my Martians came from you, most of my HEDs and several primitive
achondrites. I've always valued the fact that you offer so many rarities at a
starting price of only $0.99. I have gotten some spectacular specimens at
similarly spectacular prices through these auctions.

I have made it no secret on this list my opinion about values and pricing and
my enthusiasm for allowing the market to dictate them, but I've always been
wary of the negative aspect of this too; Prices realized being too low for
dealers to make the effort worth their time. Unfortunately from your
announcement, this seems to be exactly what is happening.

In closing I guess I will just wish you well on any and all future sales, and
thank you again for allowing me to add so many truly rare and exciting
meteorites to my collection. Your hard work, efforts and generosity to
collectors as well as this field of research does not go unappreciated.

Cheers

Dear List,

The August issue of Meteorite-Times is now up.

A huge thank you to all the writers who continually contribute their
articles each month even though they are all very busy.

Enjoy!

[meteorite-list] ISO small samples for my daughters collection.

2010-08-08 Thread Greg Catterton
Hi to everyone. Been a laggy day for the list it seems.

I am looking for a few small meteorites for my daughters type collection. She
has reached the point where she wants to upgrade.

They need to be able to fit into the small 1" gem jars.
I need:

Pallasite - any small pallasite part slice
Etched Iron - any small etched Iron part slice
Diogenite - any small sample (.5 - 1g would be fine)
Allende - any small sample (.5 - 1g would be fine)
Any small .5-1.0g part slices of neat meteorites with chondrules or inclusions.

Not much cash at the moment, so trades only.

I am working on filling two of the 50 gem jar trays for her to hang in her
room, Im sure my son will be next - he likes to follow in his bigger sisters
steps.

So far, Shes got a nice collection going that includes - Lunar, Martian,
Angrite, Howardite, Eucrite, Murchison, Karoonda, Chergach, Bassikounou,
Carancas, Bensour, Ash Creek and many others.

Will post pics once complete.

Thanks,

Greg Catterton

[meteorite-list] Personal Notes

2010-08-08 Thread Adam Hupe
Thank You Richard and Other List Members,

Collectors are the main reason I continued to offer auctions on eBay long after
the losses started stacking up. Moving onto other aspects of the hobby will be
helpful to me. It was never my intention to become a dealer. I collected and
prepared specimens for years before ever offering them. It became very
expensive, almost an addiction. In order to acquire new specimens, others had
to be sold.

I am not blaming anybody, the market will bear what they are really worth from
a
monetary standpoint, especially in a poor economy. The scientific value is
still
being realized. I enjoyed preparing the specimens and making them available
to
others who appreciated them. The costs keep increasing while the demand
remains
static even though supply has been reduced and there has been much publicity.
After all, how important is it to purchase a meteorite when so many are in
danger of losing their houses? I mainly deal in rare items, having to cut them
into ever smaller pieces in order to make them affordable. In the process, the
work load, cutting loss and costs have increased while the price per gram has
dropped. It takes just as long to prepare a high priced auction as it does a
couple of dollar one. I should easily reach my 20,000 item goal this fall. My
current plan is to inventory what is left, make it available all at once, take
my final loses and move on. If I manage to sell a key piece from my personal
collection at a profit, then I will probably donate the rest of the sales
inventory for a write off.

I believe the prices will skyrocket once the economy recovers but I cannot wait
any longer to get out into the field and make some cold discoveries. It is my
strong belief that most federal and state land will be off limits in a short
few
years and I do not want to miss out. There has been far too much publicity
that
started out good and is now turning ugly. The truth is that I see the hunting
part of this avocation coming to a close, the same way amateur treasure hunting
went a few decades ago.

I don't want to talk about the good old days, I want to live them.

Best Regards,

Adam

[meteorite-list] Daytime fireball north of Phoenix

2010-08-08 Thread Richard Kowalski
A friend contacted me earlier today (Aug 8) to tell me about the fireball she
saw around 11am MST from Anthem, Az.

I asked her some basic questions and not unexpectedly her answers where not the
most helpful.

She did say she was sitting by the pool at the Ironwood Club in Anthem, facing
west. The object was a bright fireball that appeared at the top of her vision,
"overhead" and continued to fall directly in front of her. As with most
untrained observers she reported that it appeared to fall just over the hills
to the west. To be more precise she said she watched it until it disappeared
below the roof line of the club. She reports that it had "a tail", but did not
answer my questions about a smoke train or the duration of the event. I don;t
expect more detailed answers from her about the event.

However, her report might be the basis of investigation by others. I'd expect
such a bright and apparently long lived event should probably have left an
obvious radar train to the northwest of Phoenix. I haven't heard of any other
reports, but my guess is there are probably other witnesses.

I'd suspect that a bright, long lived daytime event moving east to west at that
time of day must surely have dropped meteorites, so this is probably something
that deserves greater investigation by qualified hunters.

Hi Richard and list,

Thanks for bringing this beautiful tektite to our attention..(..AUSTRALITE:
Tektite, Meteorite from Western Australia..330458934895.) although I
nearly had a stroke when I saw the priceWOW!!! $2,000.00 Aussie dollars,
$1,830.80US dollars.

Is this someone we know?
I don't recognize the seller Abba45 and there is no mention of belonging to
any group like the IMCA.

If I may quote here from her/his auction: " Fully flanged buttons are very
rare and a flawless one is worth anywhere between $2000 - $5000 depending on
size, shape and condition."

I think it's very nice, but at only 4.2 grams I wouldn't pay that much
unless it weighed about 200 pounds. ;-)

Have a great clear sky night and may a beautiful rare and expensive
meteorite fall into your yard tonight.

All the best!

Brian
