[meteorite-list] Munich Friday evening - Fliegerbraeu has closed down

2010-10-20 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear Munich visitors,

We had to learn, that unfortunately and very recently the Fliegerbräu closed
down.
Therefore the Friday Evening Get-together won’t take place this year.

In a smaller circle the enlarged Munich Meteorite regulars’ table will take
place in inner city
on that Friday.

(Contact us ASAP, if you want to join – binding reservation is necessary).

Thanks to Andi K. for his help.

See you!

Perhaps the others who stubbornly insist on believing in pseudoscience

always encountered opposition from the pseudo-scientific crowd. I see
this as a continuation of that theme: people holding on to dogma

Hi all,

Just logged onto Facebook to post photos of an interview I did about
meteorite hunting (with Hopper) for Iguana Magazine - a full-color all

by a page that said my account had been hacked by someone in
Fayetteville, NC. I have no idea what was done but I did have many,

NONE. If for some reason your email message or friend request was
thrown out too, I apologize. You can resend it in a day or two or once
the mess is cleaned up.

I know very well that many scientists consider dowsing as they do
astrology, as a type of ancient superstition. According to my conviction
this is, however, unjustified. The dowsing rod is a simple instrument which
shows the reaction of the human nervous system to certain factors which are
unknown to us at this time.

[meteorite-list] Comet Plunges Toward the Sun Orionid Meteor Shower

2010-10-20 Thread Ron Baalke

Space Weather News for Oct. 20, 2010
http://spaceweather.com

SUNDIVING COMET: A newly-discovered comet is plunging
toward the sun for a close encounter it probably will
not survive. The comet is too deep in the sun's glare
for human eyes to pick out, but it is showing up nicely
in coronagraph images from the Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory. Visit http://spaceweather.com for latest movies.

ORIONID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is passing through a stream of
debris from Halley's Comet, and this is causing the annual
Orionid meteor shower. Bright moonlight is reducing the
number of visible meteors; nevertheless, sky watchers are
reporting some bright Orionids. The best time to look is
during the hours before local dawn on Thursday, Oct. 21st,
and again on Friday, Oct. 22nd. Check
http://spaceweather.com for a sky map and more information.

[meteorite-list] Free Mooresfort Paper Download

2010-10-20 Thread Mark Grossman

Hi,

I'm not sure this got through the first time - it was sent by mistake in
rich text format.

I just learned that for the next month, Royal Society publications can be
downloaded for free.

Back in August, I posted a note about a publication of mine that will appear
in the December 2010 issue of Notes Records of the Royal Society about how
the Mooresfort meteorite led to one of the biggest battles in the history of
chemistry.

So if you would like to obtain a copy free of charge, go to the following
link:

http://rsnr.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/firstcite

and scroll down towards the end of the page until you see July 28, 2010 and
the following article:

'William Higgins at the Dublin Society, 1810-1820: the loss of a
professorship and a claim to the atomic theory' by Mark I. Grossman.

You can then click on the Full Text download pdf link and obtain a copy.

If you think that the Mooresfort meteorite is historic, wait until you read
the article to see just how historic it really is! It led to one of the
greatest battles in the history of chemistry, that is, the debate between
William Higgins and John Dalton over priority for the atomic theory.

In any event, if you have a chance to take a quick look, you might find it
somewhat intriguing. As I mentioned, the paper is scheduled to be published
in the December issue, but it can be downloaded for free now.

Thanks.

Mark
