[meteorite-list] Forwarded: Not a missile -- a jet contrail

2010-11-10 Thread Rob Matson
Hi Count,

Quite a few pieces of evidence against a missile launch:

1. Military says they didn't launch anything
2. No NOTAM submitted (in heavily congested int'l airport corridor)
3. SLBMs never launch from coastal California waters
4. No upper atmospheric, differential wind shear of the plume
5. Contrail grew far too slowly for a missile launch
6. Contrail did not persist after sunset (no twilight glow)
7. No corresponding high-speed, high-altitude object on radar

Hello Richard and Listoids,

The subject contrail/combustion byproduct/condensation trail was not made by
a turbojet powered aircraft. There is only one trail and it displays a
massive constant volume atypical of conventional multi-engine aircraft which
display a separate condensation trail from each engine. High altitude can
make an airliner's condensation trails look like a single artifact, but when
seen closer you easily can count the engines by the individual trails.

The volume and density of this trail belie any water condensed trail I have
seen from an aircraft. The trail of a rocket powered X15 isn't anywhere near
as massive as this dude.. In my learned opinion, this missle was powered by
a single (non-staging) big ass, solid fuel rocket engine. It looks like your
standard submarine launched ICBM going down range to our Pacific Test Area.

Did you see the helicopter hovering in an observing position?

Best,

Count Deiro

2010-11-10 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
I think why so many people have a hard time accepting the contrail
explanation, is because the government has proven itself so adept at
lying to it's own citizens, that people now expect to be lied to about
everything of consequence.

Even if it was a missile launch, the government would lie about it and
say it was a contrail, swamp gas, or Venus.

Actually it is an excellent idea. There is a Belgian Scientist in Africa that
has raised a variety of larger, affectionate, friendly rats that are trained
for
finding land mines below the surface or the soil. It is a very large rat
species trained to lead on a leash. The rats lighter weight means it is far
less likely to explode the mine. I believe there is a video at TED.com

The fact that it has the ability to smell the land mines below ground seems an
advantage if adapted to meteorite hunting.

Imagine if you will someone dressed as the Pied Pipper and arriving at a fresh

You could cover acres in a short while.

[meteorite-list] Missle or Aircraft Controversy Resolved?

2010-11-10 Thread Count Deiro
Dear List,

Those of us who insisted the subject trail was from a missle appear to have
some heavy duty support. This has just been released internationally.

But Doug Richardson, the editor of Jane’s Missiles and Rockets, examined
the video for the Times of London and said he was left with little doubt.

"It’s a solid propellant missile," he told the Times. "You can tell from the
efflux [smoke]."

Richardson said it could have been a ballistic missile launched from a
submarine or an interceptor, the defensive anti-missile weapon used by Navy
surface ships---

Count Deiro

Re: [meteorite-list] Missle or Aircraft Controversy Resolved?

2010-11-10 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi List,

If this was truly a ballistic missile, wouldn't it show up on the
radars of every air-traffic control tower and weather doppler for
hundreds of miles around? It doesn't seem like an epic investigation
to reconcile the known air-traffic in the area at the time and any
radar signatures that were detected. A plane and a missile would have
very different flight paths, so it should be relatively easy (for
qualified persons) to determine what it is.

Let's pretend this contrail was a bolide trail instead. Where is the
nearest doppler station?

Best regards,

MikeG

even old missiles like the Nike left the launch rail at multi-mach
speeds...the chances of an ATC seeing it long enough to think it might be a
problem are slim since it would have been at a close to vertical climb. The
military would have been instructed to just ignore or watch it, depending
on their individual functions. Since it looks like it might have been off
Point Magoo, I'd suspect it was a Navy test shot.

[meteorite-list] AD: Special: Extremely unusual Eucrite - NWA 5473

2010-11-10 Thread Chladnis Heirs
Dear Friends of truly unusual meteorites,

in a Quick-Special, we want to present to you a very uncommon and weird new
eucrite.

Just take a look and you'll agree, that we have here a HED of quite unique
appearance:

http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/special-nwa5473.html

It is a polymict eucrite, but extremely shocked. Instead of displaying as to
expect textureless impact melts,
the matrix consist of a large variety of grains and finest fragments,
looking almost like have been sprayed around.
Very hard to cut material it is. Here and there large lighter clasts are
preserved.
A strange play of colours it has.

We had held back that stone for two years,
usually if of new material somewhat more gets available, it will appear very
soon with different numbers.
Not so with that one, we are not aware of pairings since.

NWA 5473
Sahara, 2008
tkw 45.9g
polymict EUC
Shock level: high
Weathering grade: moderate

Only a small stone it was;
with such fast-going exciting material of very limited availability,
we have always to vary a little bit, because of the different time zones,
where to publish our Specials firstly, to be more fair.
This time we offered NWA 5473 three hours earlier in the Germs forum,
and all slices went immediately.

But, the good news - the main mass of 23.2g is still free.

And the better news - we priced it fairly cheap for such a quite unique
material: 20$/g.

The polished cut face of the main mass is a little bit reflecting in the
photo,
it is looking as fine as the slices do.

So here you are!

Good luck!

And in some of the footage I saw, it looked like flame was coming out at the
source.  So while it looks like a contrail, that seems like an odd feature for
one.  But maybe it's just an optical illusion because of the way it all lines
up.  It could be that some fish are interested in exploring the oceans of Titan

I'm not so sure I agree with you Rob.

The original footage is here:

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2010/11/09/pentagon-cant-explain-missile-off-california-coast/

The trail looks like many other rocket launches I've seen in twilight. Note the
appearance is a vertical climb and then arcing over, down range.

Note too that there are no other contrails in the sky.

I certainly hope it is a contrail, but it looks very much like a submarine
launched ballistic missile.

Re: [meteorite-list] Not a missile -- a jet contrail

2010-11-10 Thread George Blahun
After reserving judgement I find myself in the "probably aircraft" camp. What
I find somewhat unsettling is after a couple days of wondering, the FAA, the
military and the government aren't able to say with certainty what it was.
This isn't an illegal alien slipping across the border, it's a big contrail
leaving craft. If it can leave a contrail, there should be a record of it. I
suppose it could have been a black project, but even then I'd expect a cover
story which was definitive.

[meteorite-list] Which class matches a chondrite ,,,

2010-11-10 Thread m42protosun
Hi met friends,

Which class of petrography matches a chondrite, which was molten nearly 99,99%
and now has no chondrules but only a few remnants, which could be parts of them?

Is this an achondrite, because total melting means morphodifferentiation?

Look at

www.flickr.com/photos/inside_of_meteorites/5164936462/in/set-72157625356287024/

and give your comment.

The thin iron lines mean that the melting temperature must be at least 1600°C.
That is in the range of melting temperature of Pyroxene and above Olivine.

Can an meteoroid of several ponds weight with a null gravity and which orbits
the sun nearby become differentiated?

Actually it is an excellent idea. There is a Belgian Scientist in Africa

has raised a variety of larger, affectionate, friendly rats that are
trained for

finding land mines below the surface or the soil. It is a very large rat
species trained to lead on a leash. The rats lighter weight means it is
far

less likely to explode the mine. I believe there is a video at TED.com

The fact that it has the ability to smell the land mines below ground

advantage if adapted to meteorite hunting.

[meteorite-list] Not a missile -- a jet contrail

2010-11-10 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum

The flight path of a 757 was posted over the Catalina Island area at the
time of the contrails by Rob:

I find that to be very solid evidence for the contrail theory.

Apparently jet contrails get confused for missles fairly often. If you read
the comments at the bottom of the article, they reflect the exact arguments
made about the current confusion. It's deja vu all over again. Or it could
be George, his wife Jane and their daughter Judy, son Elroy and Astro their
dog, celebrating Carl Sagan's birthday.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2010/01/27/nl-ufo-military-012710.html#socialcomments

DND, RCMP mum on UFO mystery
People who saw a missile-like object soaring through the sky over a small
rural community in Newfoundland Monday night are getting no answers about
what it was, although police say they'd gotten to the bottom of the mystery.

Darlene Stewart spotted the object while taking pictures of the sunset over
Harbour Mille, a community of about 200 residents on the south coast of the
province. She says she started snapping photos.

She then called her neighbour, Emmy Pardy, and the two women, along with
Stewart's husband, say they saw three similar objects flying through the air
minutes apart, one up close and two farther off in the distance.

"I really did get sick to my stomach, I was shaking when I seen it," Stewart
told CBC News Wednesday. "We were just in awe of what we seen."

The photos taken by Stewart show blurry pictures of what appears to be a
long, round object, much like a missile, seemingly rising from the ocean,
with either smoke or flames shooting out the back end.

Objects made no noise
Stewart said the objects didn't make any noise.

"We confirmed that it was something," Sgt. Wayne Edgecombe told CBC News
Wednesday. But Edgecombe said he couldn't reveal what the police
investigation uncovered.

He said the focus of any police investigation is on whether something
criminal has occurred.

"It's nothing criminal," he said, in relation to the unidentified object.

Edgecombe said he contacted the Department of National Defence and "they
gave me some info," but he said that it is up to that department to release
the information publicly.

Defence Department officials said they were aware of the reports, but were
waiting on a final report before commenting and that the RCMP were in charge
of the investigation. However, the RCMP released a statement Wednesday
referring all media inquiries on the subject to Public Safety Canada.

That department referred inquiries back to the RCMP.

The sighting has intrigued people in the Harbour Mille area, with some
saying they were told by officers who were in the community Tuesday
investigating the sightings, that the objects were test missiles launched
from the nearby French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Edgecombe said that rumour is completely false.

The French Ministry of Defence posted a message on its website confirming it
had launched a missile from a submarine this week but the time and direction
didn't match with what was reportedly seen over the south coast of
Newfoundland.

The suggestion that the object possibly involved the military has Liberal MP
Gerry Byrne, who represents the Newfoundland riding of Humber-St. Barbe-Baie
Verte, demanding answers.

"There's a credible body of evidence," Byrne told CBC News, "that suggests
there's something spectacular happened off of our shore. Before this goes
any farther, I think the government needs to actually respond very quickly
with a straightforward, factual statement."

Was safety in jeopardy?
Byrne said if it was some kind of military test, then people should be told
whether their safety was jeopardized.

"If indeed this was a man-made object, that it was a missile, was there any
potential risk to health and safety from collateral damage should the
missile fire have failed?"

Byrne used the mystery to take a shot at the federal government for
proroguing Parliament. He said if the House of Commons was opened, he'd be
able to question the ministers of defence, transport and public safety about
the incident.

"It's cloaked in relative secrecy," he said. "And the only way to get around
that secrecy is a special institution called the floor of the House of
Commons."

Stewart said Tuesday she has been overwhelmed by the number of calls she has
received about the sighting. But she said nobody has told her officially
what it was that she saw.

"I would like to get to the bottom of it," she said.

Re: [meteorite-list] Not a missile -- a jet contrail

2010-11-10 Thread Rob Holcomb

I thought it was Sarah Palin's ego taking a spaceship to the moon. :-)

There are rather common sightings here, the actual missile contrail is
usually very fast. I remember the ABM tests over the Pacific and it was
pretty cool to watch.

Nancy and Rush got married and that was their spaceship to the Moon... ;)

Are these shows available on the Internet? I don't get any premium channels

[meteorite-list] "Missile" deja vu

2010-11-10 Thread Rob Matson
Hi All,

For the few remaining people that have lingering doubts about
the cause of the November 8th southern California mystery contrail,
I invite you to watch this YouTube video of a remarkably similar
event seen from Key West, Florida, on New Years Eve 2008:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sVmjpDZLN0

Best,
Rob
