freebies and more!

Hi Listees,

For those of you outside the US or outside the influence of Western
materialism, we Americans go through a bizarre and sadomasochistic
ritual every year called "Black Friday". In essence,
otherwise-rational people stampede each other in a mad rush to buy up
the latest electronic gadgets and trendy toys.

US retailers stoke the fires by offering a wide range of sales
gimmicks designed to make their offerings stand out from the
competition. It's all insanity, but it is big business here and
everyone gets in on the madness, including small businesses. I've
worked in corporate retail management, so I have seen this Black
Friday phenomenon from both sides - the consumer and the vendor. One
thing I can state from experience, there are very few Black Friday
sales that are worth lining up for hours in the cold, waiting for the
store open, and most sensible buyers do their shopping on the internet
from the warmth of their homes.

In the spirit of Black Friday madness, I am offering some steep
discounts on everything in the store and some great freebie giveaways.
Many of these items would make ideal "out of this world" gifts for
that friend or family member who has everything. Why go out and
battle the crowds, when you can stay home and do your shopping online
at Galactic Stone? So without further ado, here are the sale details
-

Discount #1 - 30% OFF everything in the store. Use coupon code
"blackfri" at checkout.

Discount #2 - 50% OFF all NASA, Apollo and Space collectibles. Use
coupon code "nasa" at checkout.

Freebie #1 - For every $25 spent, the buyer receives a free meteorite
micromount of their choice (any micromount regular price $10 or less)

Freebie #2 - One lucky buyer will be selected at random (from now
until midnight EST) to receive a free Mars Rock or Moon Rock display
(buyer's choice, a $49 value!)

Newest Offerings include - NWA 6290 diogenite, NWA 6077 brachinite,
NWA 6393 howardite, Tagish Lake C2-ung, Mount Egerton aubrite, Henbury
iron, NWA 6391 diogenite, NWA 6394 rumuruti chondrite, elemental

Hello list,
depending of microscope exposures most people think about thin section. They
show nice colors and sometimes special structures well used for petrogaphic
studies.
But there is an other possibility to study the micro structure of
minerals, - the use of a reflecting light microscope with polarising and
color selecting filters. This images are ever very colorful too and this
colors are mostly real.
Reflecting microscope studies allow you to detect on a certain slice
thousands of regions, -
day for day new structures and if you have seen enough you must turn your
probe only an a certain angle and the microworld you see is every time a new
one.
Welcome to the amazing microscopic meteorite world of

2010-11-26 Thread al mitt

Hi Michael and all,

Those were my thoughts also. Ten years ago and frankly up to about two or
three years ago there seem to be a lot more problems on the list. The list
has changed for the better, except a few times when things get out of hand.

If people (and I need to include myself) could wait a day before posting
something when they are mad and re-read the reply, then alter or not send
the message if it doesn't have value we might be all the better for it.

I have often thought if we as a community can't get along with simular
interests and passion, then the rest of the world is doomed for sure.

I have been trying to keep to the subject myself and think this is good
advise but it is easy for threads to drift off sometimes. I agree a big
thanks goes out to Art our administrator on this list. Best to everyone,
including the late risers who ate too much yesterday!

[meteorite-list] AD: Whitecourt Irons - Final batch!

2010-11-26 Thread Mike Bandli
Dear List,

Well, I tried to think of some clever advertisement to tie in "BLACK Friday"
with "WHITEcourt," but failed miserably! So let's just cut to the chase:

I am pleased to announce that our second and last export permit was approved
for our Whitecourt irons and we have received them all! This is our last
batch of specimens and, though there are fewer specimens than the first,
there are more small specimens that are easier to budget. If you missed out
on the first round then now is your chance to secure a great piece. Like the
first time, these may go quickly, so please specify multiple choices when
ordering. This is everything!

Thanks for your support and have a great weekend!

[meteorite-list] Video on Meteorite Identification in Field

2010-11-26 Thread McCartney Taylor
I've created a stone meteorite identification video of good quality.
With the success of Meteorite Men, the universities, labs, and some
dealers including me are suddenly receiving a big influx of meteorwrong
submissions. I wanted to create a video of instruction that any of us
could redirect the submitters to. Hopefully, the video will convince 3/4
that they don't have a meteorite, and they don't get mad at us for
dashing their $1,000,000 hope.

Even if we can filter out 50% of the submitters, the community is way
ahead in avoiding lost time.

It is hosted on youtube, and they provide a very nice html snippet if
you wish to embed this video in your webpage. Ideally the page the
visitors read before they contact you about their worthless rocks.

Re: [meteorite-list] Arizona strewnfields?

2010-11-26 Thread John Hendry
Pat,

I was also in AZ last winter but working on rotation in the Ukraine which
took me away when the Tucson gem show was on last year. My wife and I did
take a trip to the show in Quartsite where we met one of the Moroccan
dealers, who had a nice selection of rocks to look at. I am pretty sure I
should be able to make the Tucson show next year.

I also appreciate the heads up on desert safety. I emigrated from the
relatively benign land of Scotland ten years ago and took up residence in
British Columbia. I was of course completely used to being top of the food
chain, and finding fresh bear prints the size of dinner plates on a gold
panning exhibition had me retreating back to the car in short order. From
what I've seen of the south west deserts they also remain rather wild and
untamed places populated with things that can hurt you if you are not
careful. I got an amateur radio licence a few years ago so I can carry a
VHF handheld to bolster the emergency communication options, but arming
oneself with the knowledge to mitigate danger in the wilds in the first
place is good advice. Its a jungle out there.

I have seen all Ruben's excellent videos. He makes it look ridiculously
easy, and his enthusiasm is one of the main reasons I got interested and
wanted to have a shot at searching myself.

Best,
John

This is what I like to see - A list member that is doing something of

Anyway, if you haven't seen McCartneys' video you may be shocked to
see how very good he is on camera. His video picks up on where mine

[meteorite-list] The Temperature/smell of meteorites: Reports from Chinese annals

2010-11-26 Thread Robert A. Juhl

Hello List,

I'm new on the Meteorite-List and saw the posts about the temperature of
meteorites followed by posts about some meteorites with a sulfurous
smell. Perhaps I can contribute to this discussion.

Sorry to be late, but to date I haven't been able to tweak my gmail to
succeed in posting to the list. Finally, I came across a obscure mailer
that seems to work. So with fingers crossed, here goes.

There are a number of reports of meteorites with smells of various kinds
in ancient Chinese records. Following are a few reports dredged up from
a quick trawl through China's standard list of official meteorite
records. Before getting to the records, I want to point out that I know
nothing about meteorites -- that's why I'm on the list -- to learn. But
I do know something about ancient Chinese records.

My source for these reports is the standard, comprehensive list of
Chinese meteor falls (pgs 63-104 of Zhongguo gudai tianxiang jilu zongji
= Complete collection of records of celestial phenomena in ancient
China, published in Nanjing in 1988 under the auspices of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences). The book covers reports from ancient times to
1910. In other words, they are reports of recognized meteorite falls.
Translations are drafts.

A report dated 30 Mar 1189 says: "A meteorite fell in Baoying County in
Chuzhou. It disintegrated into fires [perhaps with many sparks/fires on
impact?] and had an extremely rancid odor."

A report dated 28 Jun 1499 says: There was a sound like thunder...to the
N of Shuozhou city. A white vapor stretched across the sky. A fireball
split apart, dropping a stone as big as a small cartwheel. It entered
the ground more than seven feet deep, followed by gravel-like stones up
to 20-30 li distant (10-15 kilometers). The stone was bluish-black, had
an odor like sulfur, and its substance was hard and smooth. (From two
local histories of Shanxi)

A report dated 16 Nov 1620 says: A thunderous sound and the earth shook.
A black cloud surrounded a stone that fell at the mouth of a spring. The
stone was colored like green mung beans and had a sulfurous odor. (From
a local history of Hubei) A report about the same stone from a separate
history says the stone smelled like "gunpowder."

A report dated 1622 says: A thunderous sound and a stone fell. Neither
stone nor iron, its shape was wrinkled and it had a sulfurous odor. It
weighed five yi (perhaps 100-200 ounces; this unit of weight is not
well-defined). (From a local history of Hubei)

A report dated 31 July 1815 says: "Two streaks of white 'vapor' appeared
between the fields, reaching into the sky. After a while, they dispersed
and a meteor burst apart with a [loud] sound in the sky, which stopped
after a short time. Meteorites then fell to earth, where they changed
[meteorites were thought to consist of 'vapor' during flight, changing
to iron, stone, or other materials after landing] into marble-sized
pellets. Neither iron nor stone, they had a sulfurous smell."

A report dated 15 May 1832 says: "Three meteorites fell around 3
pmBefore the meteorite had fallen, there was a sound like thunder
and a shaking [of the earth]. When the people looked up, they saw things
colored deep black descending from the sky. They were as big as a hu
measures. Whirling around, they entered the fields. The people quickly
dug for them. After digging about 2.5 ft deep, they retrieved a stone
colored like a sheep's liver and covered all over with protrusions. It
weighed several jin (probably more than a kilogram) and smelled rancid."

A report dated 4 May-2 Jun 1856 says: "...there was a sound like thunder
from the sky and something as big as a cartwheel descended, colored like
the yellow of a hen's egg. It smelled so rancid that people couldn't
approach it."

There are many more, but you get the idea. There are also some
interesting clusters. For example, there is a cluster of four meteorites
that smelled like sulfur in the 1717-1725 timeframe.

There are also reports of warm/hot/frosty meteorites in Chinese sources.
Here are a few excerpts.

Date: 1720.1.10. After twilight a sound like a cannonade came from the
east and then from the south. Flashing and flickering, an object fell
from the sky. It was as big as a goose egg, metallic, very hot, and had
a sulfurous odor. (From a local history of Jianxi province)

1754.3.29. there was a thunderous sound and minor [earth]shock. People
in the countryside saw smoke twisting down to earth and then rising up.
They dug out a stone that was very hot and reported it to the local
officials, whereupon the stone was kept in the local government
storehouse. (From a local history of Henan province)

1838.1.31. Between 7-9am, there was a sound like thunder from the NE
corner of the sky. It was heard over an area of 200-300 li (roughly
100-150 kilometers). Large and small reddish objects fell from the sky
in Jianzhou, Wulian, and other places. They

2010-11-26 Thread John.L.Cabassi
G'Day List
What an interesting couple of days. First off, I'd like to congratulate
McCartney Taylor on an awesome video to help out those less fortunate.
Now you need to do an advanced video. I think this will benefit a lot
and I think the next video you can get into the nitty gritties.

Ruben, I think you've got competition ;-)) Nah,,, you've done one hell
of a job.

Tom Phillips, we are waiting for your return. We know you're taking a
break, but I look forward to your new images.

Michael, see I changed the heading. Will that help? ;-))

Cheers
John

Hi John,

You are right- McCartney did an awesome job - he has got me on my
toes! However, if you look closely you will see he actually attached
it to my "How to I.D. a meteorite" video. It was one of the first
videos I ever posted (3 years ago) It now has nearly 120,000 views!

I guess I should say thanks to everyone for viewing my videos - over
and over. This list and others have made - and kept - my channel on
youtube the most popular meteorite related channel ever - With over
600,000 views and over 500 subscribers total!

Special thanks to Geoff and Steve for such a great TV show as I'm sure
it has also helped. It seems my youtube channel is usually one of the
first places people go after the episode is over.
In fact, I just recently met a guy that after watching me on the
"Meteorite Men" show found my youtube videos and immediately came up
with a very exciting Arizona find. More on this later!

2010-11-26 Thread Ruben Garcia
Thanks Greg,

However, it wasn't Sonny that made this latest exciting Arizona find!
It is a guy that literally watched "Meteorite Men" and then my videos
and went out and made a very nice find! It is a type of find that 99
percent of "good" meteorite hunters have never done! And he did it
without using a metal detector...

I was shocked when I saw the photos as newbies NEVER have an actual meteorite!

I can't say anymore than this for now

[meteorite-list] List History Book?

2010-11-26 Thread Richard Montgomery
Howdy List...let's see. I've been peripheral for only a couple years...and
there's one book I don't have in my library (well a bunch, especially Monica
Grady's, but I'm still searching...)

Nope, the one I want to read is a history of this List, all the Peyton Place
crap which as I am just now coming to understand subjugates so much of the
heart and soul of you original participants' content. Just this suggestion
alone may cause an avalanche of thought and a race to see who can write the
first worthy List History Book. As a writer, (yes, really), I simply am
late to the scene and don't have the personal strories under my belt. I bet
there are are a bunch, as we are witnessing lately.

(I will gladly participate. Perhaps, write it myself. Who want's to?
Write me off-site with stories?)

And here's another perspective for you all (the Walrus isn't Tom.)
Having rapidly followed this familiar trend
(irons>chondrites>achondrites, and landing on achondtrites as my own
personal facination)...along the way I've also landed on the artistic nature
of our pals from space, putting it to paper and canvas.

Tom Phillips is such an amazing artist, unto his own...he has defined a new
medium that transcends science. What Tom is doing is ground-breaking on so
many levels.

As two scientific scouts, Michael Barron and I enjoyed the
92 mile drive Tuesday Nov. 9 from Santa Fe to Vaughn
to check on many craters listed by Dennis Cox,
and more that we had found with Google Earth and Maps.

His Garmin GPS unit gave locations, while I took
a few dozen BlackBerry 3.2 MPx photos of sites there,
and, without crossing fences, we were able to collect
many samples, which we hope to offer for free to
capable experts for analysis.

This introductory report is to be helpful for anyone
who wants to enjoy a preliminary practical guide
for many research opportunities.

I am pleased to evolve a writing strategy that
efficiently uses comments for Google Earth placemarks
to quickly make quite a lot of data available without
getting bogged down and lost in details, yet enabling
others to more easily conduct their own studies.

It is very convenient to simply present and comment
on the flow of findings that day, starting with an
unusual erratic rock on the right side of the road.

[meteorite-list] Recommend source for neodymium magnets?

2010-11-26 Thread Patrick Wiggins
Anyone here have a favorite source for neodymium magnets?

I just googled "neodymium magnets" and got 754,000 results so I'm hoping folks
here can narrow that down a bit.

Many thanks,

Try Ebay... Any seller with good pricing, and 100% positive feedback, is
probably a good place to buy from.

Ebay:

As for websites:

http://www.gaussboys.com/

Hope this helps...

Eric
