Hello Jeff and List,

I absolutely agree! Both the Birthday Bash and the Auction were a real blast!
That, together with Arizona Keith's and Gary Fujihara's photos, gave it a whole
new dimension as John Blennert already stated. What a pity we couldn't watch
the Gold Basin presentation as well.

Anyway, a big "Thank You!" to Ruben and all those who helped to make this
possible!

It would be great if there was a way to work out live online bidding like

[meteorite-list] NWA Saharan Desert Meteorite Map - Blood Auction

2011-02-05 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi List and Anne Black,

For those of you at the Michael Blood auction, or following it on the
live feed, I want to correct a false statement made by Anne Black
about the NWA Saharan Desert meteorite map that was sold at the
auction.

In a move that was very petty, unprofessional and without class, Anne
Black said that the map had errors on it, in front of the entire room
of bidders. Then she said that the placement of Libyan Desert Glass
on the map is wrong. First of all, if that was true (it is not) that
would be one error, not error(s) plural. Second of all, if she had
actually looked at the map closely, she would have seen that the area
labelled on the map for LDG is correct and it straddles the border of
Egypt and Libya in an area well-known for LDG finds. This map was
looked over by a respected meteorite (and LDG) person who said the map
showed correct placement for all of the labelled points on the map.
This person has been on expeditions to find LDG and knows what he is
talking about. And, I have studied the subject and read scores of
books on the subject and meteorites in general. I didn't just throw
this map together and have the artist create it without fact-checking
the places on the map.

This statement about errors on the map was a cheap shot at me because
she does not like me. And that is a very petty thing to do.

Anne -

Anne, you showed your true colors tonight. But I am sure you will sit
back and act innocent and offended - that is fine and you might have
some people fooled, but I see your true face, and it is nothing like
the image you try to portray.

The next time you badmouth one of my items, make sure you have your
facts straight.

Yes, I am mad. That giclee cost almost $100 to print alone and
shipping to Captain Blood was another $20. Because you do have a lot
of people fooled, people tend to take your word as authoritative, and
I am sure your badmouthing of my item cooled the bidding.

Now, I will sit back and await the expected barrage of abuse from your
sycophants. They might be fooled, but many others and myself are not.

I get asked a lot of questions by people asking where to find certain
meteorites that I do not have in stock (such as some rare falls) and
you can bet I will steer them in the opposite direction of your
website. You see, I can be petty also when it is deserved.

I don't expect you to apologize or acknowledge your error, because I
am beneath you and you wouldn't dare admit that someone like me is
right and you are wrong. So I guess I will just have to settle for
the satisfaction of calling you out in front of the List.

And one last thing, for the life of me, I cannot understand why
Michael Blood did not take map out of the mailing tube and show it to
the bidders. How can someone bid on something they cannot see
first-hand and they only have a small low-res printed photo to see it.
I was very disappointed at this. The artist who made the map is a
successful professional artist who has done numerous gallery shows,
including a show at the world famous Dali Museum. This is a limited
edition giclee, signed and numbered by the artist. And it's a
stunning piece of functional art. I have sold over 30 of these prints
in different sizes and every buyer has been very happy with it. For
it to sell for a pittance is an insult to me and the artist.

Well, congratulations to whoever won it, because they got a real steal
on an ACCURATE map.

And for the inevitable calls for me to apologize for this post - stuff
it. I am not apologizing for stating the truth.

Hi All,

First off, happy birthday greetings to Geoff and Steve -- I hope
you both had a fabulous time at your Birthday Bash last night at
the Sky Bar, and that your bar tabs were covered by everyone
else. ;-) I really wish I could have made it to Tucson again
this year, but it's been crunch-time at work getting our ground
software operational for our satellite launch in less than six
months. I owe you both a belated birthday cocktail the next time
our paths cross (hopefully in some farflung strewn field!)

I got an e-mail from Bob Verish this morning, informing me that
I won a Harvey Award last night!! I am honored and humbled and
(as I wrote Geoff privately a little while ago) simultaneously
a bit horrified that I couldn't be there in person last night
to accept it. It would have been a special treat to share the
stage with NEO-hunter-extraordinaire, Richard Kowalski, who I
understand also won a Harvey.

As long as I'm on the subject of asteroids, I'd like to share
with the List a little early birthday gift that I presented
Geoff late last year, but decided to wait until his birthday
to announce publically:

MPC 72991 citation:

(132904) Notkin = 2002 RB237
Geoffrey Notkin (b. 1961) is co-host of the popular Science Channel
series Meteorite Men and author of over 100 articles on meteoritics,
paleontology and the arts. A discoverer of meteorites on four continents,
he has also made documentaries for Discovery, National Geographic, PBS,
the

BBC and the History Channel.

Inclination: 3.55428 degrees
Eccentricity: 0.1440889
Perihelion distance: 3.422169 a.u.
Aphelion distance: 4.574384 a.u.
Absolute magnitude: 14.4

Astrometry from 89 observations at 6 oppositions spanning 1995-2010
Last observed: 10/9/2010 by station G96
Discovery date : 2002 09 12
Discovery site : Palomar
Discoverer : Matson, R.

The Hildas are interesting in that they are in a 2:3 orbital resonance
with Jupiter: they complete three orbits for every two Jovian orbits.
The first Hilda asteroid was discovered in 1875. Currently there are
only ~1100 Hildas known, which is less than 1/4 of a percent of all
known asteroids. They are very dark objects, with a mean albedo of
only 0.044 -- similar to cometary nuclei. Based on this albedo and
an absolute magnitude of 14.4, (132904) has an approximate size of
8.4 km. That's a cross-sectional area very close to the size of
Manhattan, with which Geoff should be quite familiar. :-) Assuming
a bulk density of 1.5 g/cm^3, that corresponds to a mass of around
4.6 x 10^11 metric tons -- around a half trillion metric tons!

Congratulations, Geoff, and welcome to the minor planet club!

Best wishes,
Rob

Re: [meteorite-list] Attention Meteorite Collectors who use Facebook -viral spam app warning

2011-02-05 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hi MikeG,
I would like to add that blocking an app does not remove it from your
profile nor does it stop the app from harvesting you and your friends
personal information, it simply blocks it from posting on your wall. And if
it's posted and you click block then it's already done it's damage.

You should also check the Application security area regularly and remove all
apps that you don't use or recognize, go to Account >> Privacy Settings >>
Apps and Websites >> Apps you use. Facebook doesn't make it easy to check
this, intentionally, but it is a good idea to purge the list of apps
periodically. My volume of junk messages and emails goes way down after
purging.

Have a great weekend,
Rob

Subject: [meteorite-list] Attention Meteorite Collectors who use
Facebook -viral spam app warning

Hi Folks,

This is a heads-up for Facebook users. There are some new viral-spam
applications going around. These are variations on a previous similar
scam. The app will claim to show you who visits your profile, like a
stat-tracker does on a personal website. However, visitor data is
held in private by FB and nobody or no app can show you this data.
It's a complete scam. These apps have names like "See Who Stalks You".

If you give the app permission to access your profile, the app will
then spam all of your FB friends by posting a link to this garbage app
on your wall, thus encouraging others to fall for it.

I am posting this to Met-List because I noticed that 3 members of this
List have already been tricked by this app.

If you are a victim of these apps, simply block them permanently by
clicking on the "Block this Application" link on the app's main page.

In the future, keep this in mind - scammers use these apps to gain
access to your profile information, possibly to steal personal
information that can be used to hack into your email account or PayPal
account. Often, a security question for your email or PP acount is
the name of your pet, mother's maiden name, etc. Such information can
be found on some people's FB profiles. That makes it easy for a
scammer to use the "Lost Password" trick on your accounts. They will
answer the security question (thanks to the info they gained from your
FB wall) and then change your password - locking you out of your
account and then they will drain your PP account. So just block these
apps immediately as soon as someone invites you.

Best regards,

MikeG

Subject: [meteorite-list] Happy Birthday, Meteorite Men!

Minor planet dynamical group: Hilda
Semi-major axis: 3.9982764 a.u.

Best wishes,
Rob

2011-02-05 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers,

I have some great historic meteorites ending soon on eBay. If you have been

the 1400's all the way up to 2008, all with great historic pasts and scientific
importance. If your looking for the first dated fall from 1492, or the greatest
Hoax meteorite, which is also one of the rarest meteorites. But that's not all,
I have many world class meteorites to offer with world class stories, from Mrs
Hodges Sylacauga, L' Aigle, St. Louis, to Almahat Sitta aka 2008 TC3. A

[meteorite-list] Attention Meteorite Collectors who use Facebook - viral spam app warning

2011-02-05 Thread Michael Gilmer

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo Moon rock sample on eBay?

2011-02-05 Thread Steve Schoner
I think that with such a fragment a "forensic" inspection of it might reveal
its true identity. I am sure that true lunar Apollo samples will be
significantly different from lunar meteorites.

I am told that the label might not be a control label, but a standard generic
type NASA label.

But real or fake, because it was offered with supposed NASA atribution...
Buyer beware.

There are legal ramifications with Apollo moon samples.

Steve

Upon looking at this auction again, I am now suspecting that this sample might
be the real thing. That label appears to be a NASA control label specific to
space materials, which in this case is the supposed "moon rock."

My question now is this... There appears to be a small photo of the specimen in
question on this control label. If so, that would further define this specimen
as authentic.

Could this be a research specimen that somehow escaped government control?

Something to think about.

But all said, with the legal aspects of legit ownership, I would be reluctant
to bid on it...

Steve,
"Where is the beef"
Sure , we would all love to have what you have but , what is the difference
between what you have and anybody else?
Say, I was the king of England and my good buddy the President of the USA gave
me a genuine moon rock. And he did give away plenty.
I decide to sell it on EBay.
Where is the law that says that is illegal?
And how does that differ from what you have?
Is it because you did not get caught buying yours?
Why is it okay for you to buy moon material and not others?
Again, "show us the beef"?
What exactly does the law state and how do you know this? Normally , when
people make statements they want to back them up with evidence?
I believe you I just want to read it myself. And I'm quite sure you have piqued
the interest of others as well.
Yes, I am home getting my frozen pipes replaced. Waiting for the B-bash
tonight.
Best regards,

[meteorite-list] AD - Tucson Meteorite Auction and some offers

2011-02-05 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Friends, Collectors and Listees,

MICHAEL BLOOD AUCTION TONIGHT -

The annual Michael Blood Meteorite Auction is tonight, and I look
forward to watching it live on the web for the first time - a big
kudos goes out to Ruben for making this possible. :)

For those of you who will be there, or will be absentee bidders,
please take a look at my auction lots - 22,23,24,25,26,27,69,70.

Note - the Riker box displays I am offering in the auction contain
larger specimens than what I usually sell in my store. These displays
contain some of the bigger and nicer micros of these meteorites that I
have.

Also note the limited edition giclee that is a 36" inch wide map of
the Saharan Desert with all of the important locations and meteorites
labelled on it. The retail price of this giclee is almost $300, but
the one in the auction has no reserve or minimum bid - so this is a
great chance to score one of these maps at a bargain price.

NEW MATERIAL AND METEORITES ON THE WAY -

In the next week, I am acquiring a ton of new material, including many
rare falls, rare types, and some Moldavite. I will also have some
more UNWA stones and UNWA bulk lots to offer - I have been out of
stock on this stuff for a long time. So keep on eye on my Twitter or
RSS feed to get the jump on these new specimens when I list them.

PRIVATE METEORITE MAILING LIST -

I also maintain a private mailing list for my friends and clients -
all of my new material is offered to my mailing list first. Once they
buy up what they want, I offer the remainders to the general public.
If you would like to be on this mailing list, email me and let me
know. This list is confidential, spam-free, and nobody else will see
your email address except me. Mailing list members also get a
permanent 25% discount on everything in the store!

METEORITES FOR SALE -

Skull-shaped Campo del Cielo iron meteorite - 2.5kg weight with
interesting surface features and great aesthetics. This specimen is
100% stable and has been decontaminated and stabilized by the Pat
Mulvany process - his iron meteorites are the most stable you will
ever see, and that is not sales hype. Just ask anyone who has
purchased one. All of my clients who purchased Mulvany irons have
been thrilled and amazed at how stable they are - even know rusters
like Campo, Nantan, and Dronino.

Big full-slice of NWA 6026, a rare carbonaceous CK5 meteorite. This
slice has it all - crust, chondrules, CAI's, shock veins, and a lack
of oxidation (W1/2). This is the last large slice of this meteorite
that I have, and the last one that will ever be available on the
market. The TKW of this meteorite is low and all other specimens are
now sitting in collections.

Strange new diogenite NWA 6290 - one of the weirdest diogenites you
will ever see. Words can't really describe it properly, so please see
the photos.

Trinitite Atom-Bomb Glass display - own a piece of history from the
day mankind shattered the atom at the Trinity test site - the very
first atomic test.

Big 16g endcut of the superb meteorwrong, Mendota - This is one of the
most interesting meteorwrongs since Shirokovksy, with dense colorful
clasts and veins of metal.

Polished Moldavite for jewelry making. This piece has exceptional
color and clarity -

Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo Moon rock sample on eBay?

2011-02-05 Thread cdtucson
Martin,
Here is the response I received from the seller on eBay;

Dear meteoritemax,

Hello Carl,

My proof is only the Grumman fellow's word, and the feeling of my friend the
Planetary geologist. It is definatley rock, not resin. If you met the engineer
before he dies, and saw the amount of NASA related stuff he had, and the fact
the he had ne reason to lie, escpecially by tellin me to not tell any one where
I got it from, tells me the story is real. Since I have no documentation, well,
I doubt that it will sell. it is real, and if I could prove it, well, priceless
really...thanks for the interest...JIM

Obviously, he is not going to convince anybody he has a real moon rock.
Martin, I ask questions of this list because of people like you that have way
more experience than I have.
Normally I get really great info. Some of the time I get info that is less than
great. So, I try to sort it out myself.

In America possession is roughly nine-tenths of the law. ( One of my favorite
people ever, John Lennon says nine-tenths of the law is nine-tenths of the
problem) We even have something called the statute of limitations which only
recognizes violations of the law for seven years for certain things. . So,
after that *technically* things revert back to legal again.
I am not a lawyer so, I am not offering any legal advise. I am just saying that
here in the United States we don't like to treat our citizens as they are
sometimes treated in other countries.
For example some countries simply declare something a national treasure and
*Nationalize it* and it automatically becomes the property of the Government.
In Mexico they do this for many many things from oil to banks, to gems and
minerals and as bazaar as this sounds. They even *Nationalize* artists and
their works of art. People who own original paintings by these artists loose
ownership on the whim of the Government.
I would like to think that the US would continue to determine these matters by
trial in court. Not some arbitrary decision made by our lame Congress or some
thug like the IRS barging in and taking what they want. I have full confidence
in our judicial system so, am looking at them for this because my friend that
has this example like the one Phil sites does not know what to do with theirs.
And I would consider buying it if and only if I know it is legal to do so.
Thanks as always for your posts . Again, I just want to know. Elton says he
wrote NASA for the details so I'm sure he will let us know what he finds out.
Best regards,
Carl

but only 5k$ from you and ebay is the right place to offer it.
Good morning!

Ridiculous.

And btw. I guess there is no long-term-meteorite-dealer on this list, who
hadn't received yet offers from various sides to buy "authentic" Apollo and
Luna-material.

Hi List,

I hope you will indulge me with regard to this email concerning a
full-circle,

or pay-it-forward, moment I was so happy to be a small part of.

Back in early December, I was contacted by a self-described "amateur
weekend
meteorite hunter" named Del Waterbury. He explained that he had read a
post I
made to the List in 2002 about the Correo strewnfield, and my August,
2007
Meteorite magazine article, "Let's Go, Correo!". He said that he had
wanted to
hunt there, but was not having much luck in finding any helpful info
concerning
the details of the strewnfield, such as size or orientation. He very
politely

asked me if I would mind helping him.

How could I refuse? Especially when I was in his place, 16 years ago,
when I
contacted two veteran Correo hunters, Robert Haag and Steve Schoner,
asking them
for help with the same questions. As they did for me, I happily shared
anything
I knew about the site. Del graciously thanked me for my help and said
he would

send me an email after the hunt with all the details of the result.

Well, tonight I received a very nice email from Del. I was thrilled
to see

that he actually was successful. In only one day of hunting, he found 2
fragments of Correo!  The first was a 5 grammer, and very close by, a 2
gram
specimen. True to his word, Del sent me photos of his finds, along with
his
appreciation for my help. That certainly made my day. And... he
provided me the
opportunity to "pay-it-forward"... "it" being the kindness that I had
been shown

all those years ago.

Correo is not the same place it was 16 years ago. There were only a
handful of
scattered house back then. A major section of the strewnfield is now
occupied by
a small community! I had wished Del the best earlier, but deep down I
felt the

odds were against him. But Del came thru. He went and he found!

I am very humbled and thankful to Del for sharing the excitement of
his finds,
and for giving me the chance to come full circle with Correo. And,
thanks to

you, Steve and Robert, for starting this whole process to begin with.

  Sincerely,
  Robert Woolard

Thanks Arizona Keith and Ruben for covering the birthday party. Your pics and
the live feed made it just like we
"couldn't make its" were there. You gentlemen deserve an award. The Countess
and I are really looking forward to "being" at Captain Blood's auction tonight.
