Re: [meteorite-list] Video of Lunar
There are two good players out there that don't foul up your system. VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and Media Player Classic (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/) are both small programs that don't require you to give up all your privacy rights and install a bunch of bloated software like those apple products. I was able to watch the movie without using quicktime, though I do have it since I want to use itunes. Re: [meteorite-list] A New Nearby Oddball Planet
Sterling, I was throwing out a guess based on what people have found and was later determined to be meteor wrongs based on the fact that they did not jive with other metal meteorites found previously. In other words; Maybe, just maybe . Not all metal meteorites have to be mostly iron. ' I have heard that platinum came from space and it can be found as single nuggets without other silicate material attached to it. If we have anything to learn from this new heavy planet is that maybe planets can have heavier cores than Earth and iron meteorites. Maybe some of this oddly heavy material has been blasted off and ends up as meteors and then meteorites? We have seen hundreds of nearly pure manganese type conglomerates laying around on desert pavements as well as on our ocean floors. These have been determined to not be the same so the ones in deserts could be actual low iron meteorites. Perhaps knocked off of this new planet. Brownleeite ( manganese) was discovered as quite a surprise whereas had this discovery had been Fe Ni metal nobody would have been surprised. So, maybe this surprise is telling us something? Maybe it is telling us that other elements are out there and perhaps this is our chance to begin to recognize some of them. Another amazing chunk of metal looking meteorite (wrong) turned out to be primarily Bornite. Bornite with beautiful regmaglypts and a perfect shape for an iron meteorite. And lets not forget the NJ fall through a roof that was deemed space junk but never was actually anylized as such. Nobody knows exactly where it did come from to this day. Just a few guesses. maybe now that we know heavy stuff is out there we can begin to look for heavier meteorites that are not mostly that light weight stuff we call iron? Geoff had an iron meteorite that seemed to be an obvious meteorite that later turned out to be wrong. Maybe Geoff was right after all? Maybe it came from this heavy planet? Mike, Itunes can play it, since itunes it uses the apple quicktime player. Itunes comes already installed on many computers. I prefer avi format as these files are easily edited using virtual dub ( a free program) . Ruben. I have also used AVS to convert files. Works well and is easy to use. I just converted the mp4 file it to an avi file. If anyone (Mike?) wants a copy let me know. The original mp4 files size is 79, 204 kb and the avi file I made is 46, 254 kb. Re: [meteorite-list] copyright questions - newspaper articles & correspondence
Hi Arnaud, I've got some experience with US copyright law and will outline it the best I can: 1. Works published before 1978 remain protected under copyright law for 75 years from the date of their original publication. Works published on or after January 1, 1978 as protected by copyright laws until 50 years after the death of the author. 2. As for the newspaper no longer existing, I believe the above rule applies. If the newspaper company owned the copyright (i.e. the article was written by a staff member) then the copyright will expire based on it's publication date as described above. If it was reader contributed or written by a person who was not employed by the newspaper, then the author owns the copyright, and not the newspaper and the date of death would apply. 3. Your intended use for educational, non-commercial value would most likely be viewed as fair use based on the mission of your organization, however given the very public nature of the web and your desire to be as clean as possible legally, I would suggest that you spend a little money for advice from an attorney who specializes in copyright law. A few hundred dollars now could be well worth the savings if a disgruntled person saw their information published on a public website without their permission. 4. I am not familiar with copyrights laws and how they apply to personal correspondence. Surely documents that you have written are yours freely to use, however the ones written by others may be a different story. I'm not going to say any more on this because I simply don't know. There are lots of restrictions of fair use too...so be mindful that just because a person intends to use a published work for educational purposes that you can use another person's work in its entirety. Restrictions are in place that limit how much of a work can be used, even for educational purposes. There are also time limits in some instances, in instances known as 'spontaneous' copies. An example of this would be if a story was just published and waiting to obtain copyright permission for educational use would cause the loss of educational value, then fair use comes into play. Even then there are still restrictions on the amount of the source that may be copied and the amount of images that may be copies as well. In my opinion, it's worth getting an informed decision by someone qualified. Mind you, I am not an attorney, but simply a teacher who has done research on this in the past. I have never had any problems out of those. They are kinda proven like Windows. I suggested Glary if you have uninstalled something recently, you can use it to clean up the registry afterwards. It just keeps things in order. I run it ever so often just to tidy up. Stuart McDaniel Lawndale, NC Secr., Cleve. Co. A lot of you are having problems loading this while others are having no problem at all. You will need Video/QuickTime to read .mov format. I used this format since the download bandwidth is much less without sacrificing too much resolution. I have not tried loading this on my Windows 7 machine. It loads automatically on my XP unit. [meteorite-list] NWA 4468 Martian 3-D Video [Higher-Res]
Hey All, A few enthusiastic viewers asked if I had a higher-res video of NWA 4468, the Primitive Shergottite. I do, here you go, but be patient, it is 40mb and takes a little longer to load than my first one yesterday. The image is well worth the wait though! :) Note the large pyroxene oikocrysts visible through the fusion crust. [meteorite-list] NASA Dawn Spacecraft Reaches Milestone Approaching Vesta
May 03, 2011 Dwayne C. Brown Headquarters, Washington 202-358-1726 dwayne.c.br...@nasa.gov Jia-Rui Cook Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. 818-354-0850 jcc...@jpl.nasa.gov RELEASE: 11-133 NASA DAWN SPACECRAFT REACHES MILESTONE APPROACHING ASTEROID Dwayne C. Brown Headquarters, Washington 202-358-1726 dwayne.c.br...@nasa.gov Jia-Rui Cook Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. 818-354-0850 jcc...@jpl.nasa.gov WASHINGTON -- NASA's Dawn spacecraft has reached its official approach phase to the asteroid Vesta and will begin using cameras for the first time to aid navigation for an expected July 16 orbital encounter. The large asteroid is known as a protoplanet - a celestial body that almost formed into a planet. At the start of this three-month final approach to this massive body in the asteroid belt, Dawn is 752,000 miles (1.21 million kilometers) from Vesta, or about three times the distance between the Earth and the moon. During the approach phase, the spacecraft's main activity will be thrusting with a special, hyper-efficient ion engine that uses electricity to ionize and accelerate xenon to generate thrust. The 12-inch-wide ion thrusters provide less thrust than conventional engines, but will provide propulsion for years during the mission and provide far greater capability to change velocity. "We feel a little like Columbus approaching the shores of the New World," said Christopher Russell, Dawn principal investigator, based at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). "The Dawn team can't wait to start mapping this Terra Incognita." Dawn previously navigated by measuring the radio signal between the spacecraft and Earth, and used other methods that did not involve Vesta. But as the spacecraft closes in on its target, navigation requires more precise measurements. By analyzing where Vesta appears relative to stars, navigators will pin down its location and enable engineers to refine the spacecraft's trajectory. Using its ion engine to match Vesta's orbit around the sun, the spacecraft will spiral gently into orbit around the asteroid. When Dawn gets approximately 9,900 miles (16,000 kilometers) from Vesta, the asteroid's gravity will capture the spacecraft in orbit. "After more than three and a half years of interplanetary travel, we are finally closing in on our first destination," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "We're not there yet, but Dawn will soon bring into focus an entire world that has been, for most of the two centuries scientists have been studying it, little more than a pinpoint of light." Scientists will search the framing camera images for possible moons around Vesta. None of the images from ground-based and Earth-orbiting telescopes have seen any moons, but Dawn will give scientists much more detailed images to determine whether small objects have gone undiscovered. The gamma ray and neutron detector instrument also will gather information on cosmic rays during the approach phase, providing a baseline for comparison when Dawn is much closer to Vesta. Simultaneously, Dawn's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer will take early measurements to ensure it is calibrated and ready when the spacecraft enters orbit around Vesta. Dawn's odyssey, which will take it on a 3-billion-mile journey, began on Sept. 27, 2007, with its launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It will stay in orbit around Vesta for one year. After another long cruise phase, Dawn will arrive at its second destination, an even more massive body in the asteroid belt called Ceres, in 2015. These two icons of the asteroid belt will help scientists unlock the secrets of our solar system's early history. The mission will compare and contrast the two giant asteroids, which were shaped by different forces. Dawn's science instrument suite will measure surface composition, topography and texture. In addition, the Dawn spacecraft will measure the tug of gravity from Vesta and Ceres to learn more about their internal structures. The Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) in Washington. Dawn is a project of SMD's Discovery Program, which is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the Dawn spacecraft. The framing cameras have been developed and built under the leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Katlenburg-Lindau in Germany, with significant contributions by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin, and in coordination with the Institute of Computer and Communication Network Engineering in Braunschweig. The framing camera project is funded by NASA, the Max Planck

Hi Arnaud. I do not believe you would be breaking any laws here in the U.S. In other countries I am not sure, but I believe there may be some sort of universal copyright laws that most countries follow. I do know that as long as you are not selling the transcripts ect for profit and you give credit to the author and using it in a educational purpose way then this is called by Law... Fair Use. It is a law that allows anyone to use information, pictures, music, without the need to contact the author for permission of use. That of course means for its use MUST be non profit, educational purposes and credit to the author. In your case Arnaud, it seems what you want to do is very legal. Here is a link about Fair Use law and at least here in the U.S you would be fine. [meteorite-list] Density of iron at high pressure
Eric is right, this high density can be explained by the effect of very high pressures on pure solid iron in a planet 1.6 times the diameter of the Earth . Of course, nothing is pure in nature, so there is presumably Ni, Co, S, O, and C in the mix. The light elements offset the dense iron. If there are high temperatures in the planet, then thermal expansion offsets volume decrease by the pressure to some extent. How did this iron rich planet form? Perhaps similar to Mercury, which may have lost most of its silicate mantle in an early giant impact. Dense planets of gold, lead, and uranium are ruled out simply based on the abundance of the elements in the universe. Or else this is the largest ore deposit in the neighborhood! :) What would be really interesting is to know the density distribution in this planet, which cannot be determined without knowing its moment of inertia. Carl Agee Sterling wrote: Those densities are for items sitting on your desk. The iron core of earth has a density of almost 13gm/cm^3 out to 1000km. Over the next 2000km the density drops to around 11gm/cm^3. I would imagine if this planet is 1.6 times the diameter of earth the 11+gm/cm^3 would extend even farther from the center. Additionally if most of the lighter elements have boiled away leaving a mostly iron and refractory element sphere, the 11+gm/cm^3 could comprise a significant portion of the sphere with the center being very dense. In other words it probably doesn't need an exotic mix to get to this density. The core of a gas giant boiled away (as Sterling mentioned) to the iron and refractory elements would probably do just fine. -- Eric Olson 610 W. Moore Rd Tucson AZ 85755 -- Carl B.
