Congrats Scott, Terry and Larry,
Those are some nice meteorites. Much better looking than the average Nevada
chondrite. Thank you for the posts and pics. I'll bet you were thrilled by your
first finds.

Hey Everyone,

I just got home late last night from my extended trip out west. I
loaded some pictures of Scott and Terri's and my finds from the Nevada
dry lake hunt that Scott reported on.

http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad190/alienrockfarm/Nevada%20Dry%20Lake%20Meteorite%20Hunt%20May%202011/

It's worth a glance, some of the meteorites were very nice looking with
good crust and contraction cracks. There's a few pictures of my cat and
dog too!

I had a great time out there. Hunting with Scott and Terri is pleasure,
thanks guys!

Hi All, Just a quick update from out in the field. My Wife Terri I
had
to do a biz trip to Ca to teach flying. So I made arrangements to add
a
few weeks of meteorite hunting in on the trip. We started out with
blizzard conditions at lake bed #1. Two nights the temp dipped to 15
then
17 degrees. It was snowing, then raining, then hailing on us for a
few
days, when out on the hunt. Lake bed 1 was a old strune field that we
worked over for 3 days. We recovered about 3 lbs that totaled over
600
meteorite frags. Weather was warming a bit so we moved to lake bed #
2. It
was real difficult getting on this lake bed as the snow melt was
draining
into it and it was nearly full of water. We still hunted the dry edge
for
a day but no luck. There was lots of evidence of native Americans
living
in the area . We hit the road for lake bed #3. We had made
arrangements
for one of our meteorite hunting friends to come join us at lake bed
#3.
once we arrived at the location #3 we found it difficult to find the
correct road onto the lake bed. During our hunt for the road out in
remote NV. I had a blow out on my Kawasaki teryx trailer. I had my
lance
camper on the truck , so I could not see or feel that my trailer
wheel had
blown, so by the time I stopped my tire rim were destroyed. I had
thrown
in a spare off my aircraft trailer before leaving the airpark. When I
tried to change the tire I find that my spare rim is about 1/8th inch
larger. So we camp for the night on this remote road. The next day I
unhooked the trailer leaving Terri Sundance to to watch things. I
gave
Terri my 9 mm to protect herself in case any yahoos gave her trouble.
My
drive to the nearest town was a wake up call. There were no tire
stores
left in this town. The last one went out of biz 3 days before I
arrived
into town. I did find a guy to help me put the rubber off my rim that
did
not fit onto the smashed up rim. I had a sledge hammer so I smashed
the
rim into better shape. Once I we got the tire on, it was still
leaking
air. I beat the edge of the rim with my sledge until it stopped
leaking
air. To make a long story short I had to drive about 150 miles on
this bad
rim tire to the nearest big town where I got 8 ply rubber on all
tires
two new rims. By that afternoon we were back at Lakebed #3 for the
hunt.
Larry arrived also, so the next day we hunted all day long with no
finds
and nearly got stuck in our 4x4 buggy on the wet lake bed. Then on
day two
Larry found the strings of gravel that we were hunting for the day
before. Within a minute or two Larry found 1 nice one then 5 min
later I
found a nice complete meteorite with flow lines about 20 ft from
Larry's

[meteorite-list] Hoba - historical notes

2011-05-12 Thread Mark's Meteorites
Hi all,

I've added a new addition to my historical site with details of the
circumstances of the find of the Hoba mass. As you know, Hoba is the largest
known meteorite specimen in the world.

http://historicfalls.com/20th-century/hoba/

One passage intrigued me:

For the purpose of determining the magnetic axis of the meteorite a six-foot
length of steel drill was magnetised, and Mr A W Clark found that the axis is
about 14deg east of the earth’s present magnetic axis. No doubt the meteorite
became magnetised in the earth’s field when it fell with a violent concussion;
but whether it would be possible to deduce from this figure the date of the
fall is very doubtful.

The terrestrial age of Hoba is generally given as around 80,000 years. This is
more than enough for the magnetic field to have wandered by this amount. I
know field orientation is used in geology to correlate ages of some beds with
the earth's field.

Is this approach to verifying terrestrial age one that has been tried, and are
there any good reasons why it would/wouldn't work?

Re: [meteorite-list] Scam Artist - Joel Samson - FakeLunar Meteorites

2011-05-12 Thread al mitt

Hi Gary, Greg H., Chris and all,

Two names have come up recently as scammers. Joel Samson and Todd Parker. We
also know of another guy from the Chicago area that is a fraud. What I would
like to see is a list of people and companies that are known to be selling
fakes, mis-representing material and so forth. I am not talking about
someone who has made a mistake.

In order to qualify, the person or company in question would have to have
evidence that would support their efforts to be purposely doing something
wrong. I wouldn't want a witch hunt or dealers who don't like other dealers,
trying to put people on this list. I know this is probably going to open a
can of worms BUT it is important to know suspect con artists, frauds and
people and companies who are just not getting the fact we don't like our
collections messed up.

Does a list already exist? If not it sure would be nice to have one that
could be shared with the collecting community from time to time. Other input
appreciated.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Scam Artist - Joel Samson - Fake Lunar Meteorites

2011-05-12 Thread siegfr...@haberer-meteorite.de

Hello List,

Thank you for calling my attention to potential dubieties about a lunar
meteorite offered by Joel Samson.

The depicted meteorite Joel Samson posted on Facebook which is held between two
fingers on the photo is definitely an authentic piece of the lunar meteorite Dho
908. It is one of our own photographs but we never gave it to him. So we do not
know how he got hold of the photo and we did not give him the authorization to
use it either.

We don’t know whether the specimen he offers for sale is identical with the
photo or not.

What we do know is that Joel Samson is in possession of material which has a
distant similarity with Dho 908. As the material presumably is not meteoritic he
was asked several times by competent side to have the specimens scientifically
examined. To our knowledge he did not follow this advice. In case of doubts
about the authenticity of a specimen offered as a Dho 908 we can offer support
with the identification.

With very best regards

2011-05-12 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Gang,

Ken Newton's website is a good start. There is a long list of
scammers, suspect eBay sellers, and known meteorwrongs. In my mind,
it's the quasi-official Hall of Shame.

http://meteorite-identification.com/

If we all chip in and do what we can, the meteorite market can
self-police itself. But we need to share information on the bad guys
and make it readily available to those who are trying to check out
their sellers. List members can post to this list, but not every
collector is a member of this list and some don't think to check here
while researching their sellers or a suspect offer.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Scam Artist - Joel Samson - FakeLunar Meteorites

2011-05-12 Thread Frank Cressy
Hello All,

Dave Gheesling can't post to the list at the moment, but given the seriousness
of the accusation made against Todd Parker, he asked that I post this on his
behalf:

His message follows:

Hello List,
While I haven't seen where Todd Parker's name was mentioned as a possible
scammer other than in Al Mitterling's recent post (I haven't been closely
following the thread), TODD PARKER MOST ASSUREDLY IS NOT A SCAMMER OR ANYTHING
OF THE SORT.  To the contrary, Todd is probably one of the finest people I've
had the pleasure of knowing -- inside or outside of the meteorite community.
Presumably this mention has something to do with the recent Mifflin thread, but
Todd's name shouldn't be associated with anything other than integrity -- he is
a class act, to be sure.
All the best,
Dave

You made a mistake listing Todd Parker as a scammer.  He was mentioned as
selling Whetstone Mountains that were definitely real.

Re: [meteorite-list] Scam Artist - Joel Samson - Fake Lunar Meteorites

2011-05-12 Thread Adam Hupe
I was made aware after my initial posting that Eric Twelker also has a genuine
piece of NWA 5K on his website which was obtained through legitimate channels.

My intent was not to exclude dealers or collectors who have legitimate pieces
of
this meteorite for sale, only make prospective collectors aware that their are
a
some less than honorable people out there offering bogus material.

I took extra measures from the beginning at enormous costs to protect
consumers'
investments in this special meteorite by mapping every cut, rigorously
documenting every piece, imaging every slice, providing C.O.A.s, serial numbers
and tracking first-round distribution on a registry. I even cast the original
stone so there would be no argument latter on about dimensions. The weight was
certified within minutes of unpacking.

As far as I know, the extra measures have served the collecting public well. I
do not believe a single bogus piece has been placed in circulation despite con
artists attempts to do so. It would be cost prohibitive to do this with every
stone so this type of attention to detail is not the solution for most
meteorites.

Best Regards,

Adam

I would advise that the other risk associated with compiling and
publishing a blacklist is the potential for libeling someone. Libel
has a serious legal risk and cost associated with it. One needs to be
very careful as illustrated by this thread and the potential for
wrongly implicating innocent individuals.

[meteorite-list] Rely on maps and weather conditions and local info, not always on GPS short routes

2011-05-12 Thread Brian Cox

hi folks,

I thought I'd post this story about a Canadian woman who was recently found
by hunters on their snow mobiles who were themselves lost in the rough and
treacherous mountains of Northern Nevada and her husband hasn't been found
yet. They asked for the shortest route to Las Vegas from Canada and wound up
in mountains they shouldn't have been in, since many people are out hiking
or looking for rocks and meteorites out in the dry salt flats or dry lake
beds and mountains. Just be careful, I know the majority of you are and you
are smart, but some people new to the hobbies are relying too much on GPS
gadgets that will get you lost and possibly worse if you don’t also use maps
and local info. There was the story a few months ago about the woman who
lived, but her 6 year old son died in Death Valley after using GPS to find
the shortest route through Death Valley and used service roads and old
mining roads and dirt trails and the dead bodies of a couple who were found
recently who used used GPS back in 2009 in Death Valley and were lost and
never found until searches found them almost 2 years later. Don't rely just
on GPS, use the old fashioned way, A Map, that has updated road info and
check weather conditions. I have used GPS and if you put in shortest route
it will take you places you don't belong.

2011-05-12 Thread Don Merchant
Hi Al and the rest of the List. I agree totally with you Al. One thing as
you mentioned that I have noticed over the years is that there is that
chance someone can get hurt by accusations of fraud ect. Yet how can this be
done so as to avoid this? I have an idea that might work but may need
refining. Maybe we can ask the List for 2 or 3 volunteers who 1) Has been a
Listie of good and long standing. 2) Has built an excellent reputation of
their name in the meteorite community, which includes experience with buying
and selling meteorites, with knowledge of meteorite composition both
internal and external. 3) Last but not least, always desired to be a CSI and
so a great opportunity to be an MFI or Meteorite Fraud Investigator. I
myself like MFS Meteorite Fraud Squasher! Anyways...The List could vote 2
or 3 MFI's that have an interest. How this vote could be doneI don't
know, but I am sure with all the brilliant minds that this List has, that a
great suggestion is out there. These would be the people that the rest of
the List would contact (via another email) when a fraudulent situation takes
place. Now the rest of the List is not exposed to any allegation. The MFI's
would research the history of the suspected Dealer/Seller in a fair timely
fashion and communicate with the other 2 MFI's of their findings. Finally if
the situation is found to NOT be fraudulent, the MFI's need only contact the
person that thought fraud was taking place and explain their findings. Now
all is calm on the List. If however the findings show fraud (several very
strong circumstantial evidences could warrant fraud) Then the MFI's could
officially announce this to the List! Though the IMCA does something
similar, not everyone on this List is a Member of the IMCA. It would be
beneficial anyways, in having 2 entities helping to combat the destruction
of our collections and reputations as meteorite collectors, sellers,
dealers, and hunters, especially since the Meteorite Central List doesn't
appear to be going away for a very long time if ever. Maybe a bi-monthly or
monthly email to the entire List as a reminder of who to contact (MFI's) if
fraud is suspected. We need to all watch our backs. It will only get worse.
Lets not allow differences between dealers and or mistakes stand in the way
but rather concentrate on the benefit for all of us, to rid of this pandemic
air borne disease of meteorite fraud. This hurts every single collector on
this List, whether I like you or you don't like me bla bla bla...the bottom
line is we have a common interest and that is the love of this great hobby.
Lets protect it. Just my 2 cents is all. I know it sounds silly, but the
bottom line is Al is right, and somehow we need to stomp out these greedy
meteorite flea fakes! Say that 3 times fast! It's FAKES not FLAKES lol

All, Just a quick update from out in the field. My Wife Terri Ihad
to do a biz trip to Ca to teach flying. So I made arrangements to
adda  few weeks of meteorite hunting in on the trip. We started out
with  blizzard conditions at lake bed #1. Two nights the temp dipped
to 15then  17 degrees. It was snowing, then raining, then hailing on
us for afew  days, when out on the hunt. Lake bed 1 was a old strune
field that we  worked over for 3 days. We recovered about 3 lbs that
totaled over600  meteorite frags. Weather was warming a bit so we
moved to lake bed #2. It  was real difficult getting on this lake bed
as the snow melt wasdraining  into it and it was nearly full of water.
We still hunted the dry edgefor  a day but no luck. There was lots of
evidence of native Americansliving  in the area . We hit the road for
lake bed #3. We had madearrangements  for one of our meteorite hunting
friends to come join us at lake bed#3.  once we arrived at the
location #3 we found it difficult to find the  correct road onto the
lake bed. During our hunt for the road out in  remote NV. I had a blow
out on my Kawasaki teryx trailer. I had mylance  camper on the truck ,
so I could not see or feel that my trailerwheel had  blown, so by the
time I stopped my tire rim were destroyed. I hadthrown  in a spare
off my aircraft trailer before leaving the airpark. When I  tried to
change the tire I find that my spare rim is about 1/8th inch  larger.
So we camp for the night on this remote road. The next day I  unhooked

mated to the payload attach fitting. The assembly later will mate to
the Delta II rocket.

At NASA's Space Launch Complex 2, the Delta II first stage was loaded
with liquid oxygen and a countdown test conducted on May 11.
Thursday, a Simulated Flight test is being run. This is an electrical
and mechanical test of the launch vehicle's systems that will be
exercised in the same sequence as they will operate during the actual
powered flight.

The Aquarius/SAC-D mission is a collaboration between NASA and
Argentina's space agency with participation by Brazil, Canada, France
and Italy. NASA's Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center
in Florida is managing the launch. United Launch Alliance of Denver,
Colo., is NASA's launch service provider of the Delta II 7320.

Spacecraft: Juno
Launch Vehicle: Atlas V 551
Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 41
Launch Date: Aug. 5, 2011
Launch Time: 11:40 a.m. EDT

This week a cruise system verification test was conducted, and a
Jupiter orbit insertion system verification test was also completed.
The work to install the three solar arrays begins May 13. Later in
processing, the magnetometer will be installed; a solar array
illumination test and a magnetometer boom deployment test also are
planned.

The solar-powered Juno spacecraft will orbit Jupiter's poles to find
out more about the gas giant's origins, structure, atmosphere and
magnetosphere.

Spacecraft: GRAIL (Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory)
Launch Vehicle: Delta II 7920 Heavy
Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 17B

At NASA's Space Launch Complex 17B, the second stage was hoisted atop
the first stage of the Delta II rocket on May 10. The payload fairing
is being raised into the white room of the mobile service tower
today. The launch vehicle electrical, mechanical and propulsion
system testing will begin on May 20. The solid rocket motor thruster
installation and alignment has been completed.

GRAIL's primary science objectives will be to determine the structure
of the lunar interior, from crust to core, and to advance
understanding of the thermal evolution of the moon.

Spacecraft: Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity)
Launch Vehicle: Atlas V-541
Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 41
Launch Date: Nov. 25, 2011
Launch Time: 10:21 a.m. EST

The cruise stage, back shell and heat shield for the Mars Science
Laboratory payload arrived at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing
Facility aboard an Air Force C-17 cargo plane on Thursday evening.
These are the first flight elements to arrive for the Mars Science
Laboratory mission. These elements were taken to the Payload
Hazardous Servicing Facility (PHSF) located in the KSC Industrial
Area to begin processing. The Curiosity rover will arrive next month.

The rover's 10 science instruments will search for habitable
environments on Mars that could support life, past or present. The
unique rover will use a laser to look inside rocks and release the
gasses so that its spectrometer can analyze and send the data back to
Earth, as well as sophisticated chemistry experiments and
high-powered microscopes.

Re: [meteorite-list] Scam Artist - Joel Samson -FakeLunar Meteorites

2011-05-12 Thread Count Deiro
Hello Don, Al, Chris and List,

We agree that something needs to be done to eliminate fraud and
misidentification. We also agree that investigating and outing a person
offering misidentified meteorites intentionally, or not, is fraught with the
danger of a lawsuit.

I put this to the you and the List...Why attack the purported fraudster? Why
not attack the meteorite being offered? We are going to examine the suspected
clinger anyway.

It could work this way and you readers can fill in the details Suspect
rock is offered. Sample is obtained for analysis. This act would tie the seller
to the rock. Rock turns out to be genuine. Nothing done. Rock turms out to be
something else. Then the results of the analysis is released to the seller, the
buyer and all who have asked that they be notified of misrepresentations.
Nothing needs to be said about the seller personally. His rock is shit and we
all know it. Whether his offering was done to intentionally defraud, or if he
was a victim, or if it was mis-classified can be handled in the details. Just
don't attack the seller personally. Attack the rock.

Best to all,

done so as to avoid this? I have an idea that might work but may need

their name in the meteorite community, which includes experience with buying
and selling meteorites, with knowledge of meteorite composition both
internal and external.
Lets not allow differences between dealers and or mistakes stand in the way

air borne disease of meteorite fraud. This hurts every single collector on
this List, whether I like you or you don't like me bla bla bla...the bottom

Hello List,
While I haven't seen where Todd Parker's name was mentioned as a possible

2011-05-12 Thread Rob Holcomb
Personally I don't think a black-balled list is a good idea at all, it
puts the finger pointers at risk and makes the association look bad. What
it sounds like is the IMCA needs to get involved and promote members that
are dealers in good standing and if any member is caught selling
fraudulently they will lose their membership. Consumers and collectors can
be educated to only by from members of a reputable association that verifies
members and will admonish them if they don't act with utmost honesty and
integrity.

I certainly wouldn't trust a lawyer that was disbarred or a stock broker
that wasn't a member of the NASD. I'm not a dealer and have a very limited
collection, and will only buy from a legitimate dealer.

Seeing these posts on this forum is distracting from the real discussions
and now they have spread to the FB Meteorite group.

Subject: [meteorite-list] New Thread regarding scams

Hi List,

It is no debate that scams should be recognized and exposed, and shared on
this List...yet pending un-intended consequences (liable lawsuits and
false accusations) will weigh heavily upon us all if they are in fact ill
conceived and recklessly tossed about.

Our objective is to maintain integrityand the majority of participants
here have more than a rudimentary knowledge in things meteoritic, and know
already when a sham is under way. This recent suggestion of a
blacked-list of scammers is currently directed at all of us, yet not yet
directed to the un-informed, and therefore really doesn't reach those new
to meteorites...(they are also most likely not members of this List and
our discussions...hence the dillema.)

I suggest that we simply alert the rest of the community when suspect
substitutes or outright fraud appears. Simple as it seems, word of mouth,
or word of List, will alert us. And then we'll investigate it. En route,
keep the culprit at bay.

En route, I don't see an upside to pointing out fraudsters in a
formal-format-published-list, since the potential downside would only
further the fire; also potentially harm an already fragile public
opinion. Remember that most newbie eBayers aren't even aware of this
discussion, nor of the List and this thread.

Yes, this is a big problem if fraudulent eBay listings spawn and infect
collections. What to do, besides writing individual opinions to those
infected?

Some thoughts: Pointing out fraudulent people is much more volitile than
pointing out meteorwongs, and miss-labled true specimens (although, the
Mifflin case may offer a compelling counter to this suggestion) since
meteoritic knowledge speaks volumes on its own.

So, I suggest we follow a true path to a solution to an ongoing issue:
spread knowledge of our meteorites, and avoid getting trapped in the
process.

[meteorite-list] Information needed regarding NWA 4419

2011-05-12 Thread jason utas
Hello All,
I'd like to know who, if anyone on this list, obtained the NWA number
4419 and had the R-chondrite analyzed. I purchased a number of pieces
of it, but, when looking it up in the bulletin, mine don't appear to
match the physical description of the meteorite.
I'd be fine with keeping the information anonymous and private, but
would like to know, if someone on the list did reserve this number, if
they could verify whether or not the meteorites I have match this NWA
number or not.
Any information would be appreciated - if any list member didn't
reserve the number, but could send a photo of a sample they have -- or
any information at all regarding the stone in addition to what is
mentioned in the bulletin -- anything like that would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason Utas
