Michael, About 4kg recovered so far (what I have been able to glean of the web) H5 ordinary chondrite. From the few pics I have seen, very similar in appearance to Buzzard Coulee and close in classification. Most will be owned by Slovakia. Government laws say meteorites recovered in Slovakia are owned by the state. This stone should be easily worth more than Buzzard Coulee. Less material, harder to get, similar classification, recovered fall, etc.. Buzzard started at around $50/gram (small pieces still selling for more) and now is down to about $25/gram. Kosice should be twice this or more if the government has grabbed all the stuff. My Saturday morning pre coffee ramblings. Re: [meteorite-list] Certificate of Mailing
Hi all! Prior to me selling my mail order business several years ago, we mailed/shipped thousands upon thousands of packages. Most of this was done via FedEx and USPS along with UPS and some special carriers. USPS proved to be very reliable and we only had issues with a few packages. All issues were resolved, but it seems to take forever once an issue arises. My suggestions are; 1. Insure the package for the value of replacement. 2. Pay for the Delivery Confirmation with signature. This proves two things. A. You shipped it. B. It was received. It also gives you the ability to track the package, although USPS tracking really lacks on information on most all shipments. 3. If it is an extremely rare or expensive product, have it shipped by a special carrier with tracking capabilities. It will be treated with better care. Still, Shxx happens. It's unfortunate for both the buyer and seller. Kind Regards! Here's a little tip I've utilized for many years to give me a little piece of mind, a little extra piece of mind, whenever I mail something with the USPS that I want to be able to document that was mailed. It's called a certificate of mailing. How it works is this: when an item is entrusted to the USPS I pay a little extra something, less than $2.00, for a a piece of paper known as a USPS certificate of mailing It offers proof that I mailed something to so and so. The person to whom a letter, padded parcel envelope, or whatever, is mailed to does not know that I have this proof but if something is lost in the mail the Certificate of Mailing covers my tush. If anyone were ever to claim that something was maybe not mailed I have certifiable USPS proof that it was. Fortunately, nothing of mine has ever been lost in the mail. Yesterday, for example, I sent off a possible meteorite to an expert for an opinion of what may be a small slightly magnetic meteorite with a USPS Certificate of Mailing. I anticipate no problem with the specimen reaching it's intended final destination. But if there is a problem, well, need I say more? This little precaution may also help keep some people honest. Best wishes to all. [meteorite-list] Zapotectites- Hunting the Central American Tektite
Hi list, I have returned from another trip to Belize where I hunted tektites with the intent of expanding the strewnfield. It is hot and dry there in early May and for two weeks I acquired a darker tan and some tektites. Science also benefitted as the size of the strewfield in Belize was quadrupled. More of the strewnfield will likely be discovered in Guatemala but with a per-capita murder rate four times as high as Mexico I will only go there after much prudent consideration. In spite of the heat Belize is always a comfortable place to visit and the people are mostly very friendly. Even in Belize City the aggression level is much lower than in a place like Montego Bay, Jamaica. The average grade level completed in school is often limited. Most only attend five or six years of school (Jeff Foxworthy turned out OK with as little) so stick to the basics with them and don't start gushing profoundly. I watched a colleague mire down several times when he ebulliently expounded about tektites with locals- too much information! If you wish to hunt for these stones then you should start by focusing on gravel. High terrace deposits have produced good specimens but they are often chipped if recovered from a gravel quarry. The roads that are gravel covered also may contain tektites and a local man has recovered several specimens using this tactic. You can also find them in stream gravels- one very abraded specimen was recovered this way during this trip. Always ask the landowner's permission before hunting. In one instance I found the landowner visiting a property that looked promising. I asked for permission to hunt and was rewarded with several finds. I am not selling any specimens but maybe I might trade for special tektites. If anyone on the list would like to help with calculating a market price for these tektites please contact me off list. I wish the best of fortune to any who venture forth and hunt. No need for detectors or magnets as the quarry is too discreet to reveal itself with these tools. Keep looking because they are there- you just have to look at the right spot. [meteorite-list] Zapotectite- what kinda name is that?
In my previous post I referred to the new tektites from Belize as Zapotectites. Geologist Jean Cornec is the one that perhaps should name them as his unpublished paper and its appearance on a website is the start of the new strewnfield's recognition. I noticed the paper about a month after posting. When I informed Hal Povenmire of the posting he quickly published on the subject and referred to them as Central American tektites. That is a fine name but we don't refer to the Central European tektites as such but instead as Moldavite (Czechs use Vlatavine). In a much earlier posting I made this year I had called the new tektites Mayanites because the first discoveries in Guatemala and Belize were all in the greater Mayan influence. But Mayanite is used as part of a name for something referred to as Mayanite Rainbow Quartz. Perhaps a good common name should refer to the particular subset of Maya in the tektite region, namely the Zapotec. Zapotectite, or perhaps more correctly Zapotecite would then be a possible moniker for the new discoveries. I just use it because it fits for me; time and common usage will be the ultimate dictator. Be careful Michael (Blood), As Mike (Tettenborn) just told you any meteorite found within Slovakia is property of the State of Slovakia, therefore any piece being offered to you was illegally obtained or exported. We don't want the reporter at NewYork Times, or any other journalist, to find out that illegal, smuggled meteorites are being bought and sold, and I don't want to have to write another rebuttal to defend the Meteorite Community. There are in fact few illegal meteorites commonly seen: Berduc from Argentina, Sulagiri from India, and Kosice from Slovakia. (Yes, there are others but not as often seen). Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Photographs Raining From the Sky After Tornadoes
Sorry for the reply all (OT disclaimer!).. Debris is scattered everywhere around the OKC metro. Mostly little stuff - shards of insulation, cardboard, lots of leaves. The metro was extremely lucky because the events stayed out of heavily populated areas. The atmospheric conditions were ripe for a big event. State workers and even some schools were released early in anticipation. Joplin's horrible storm was still fresh in everyone's minds, adding to the nerve-fray factor. Our part of town was in the bullseye of the Chickasha tornado. We were huddled with neighbors in their bunker, and watched the wall cloud pass over with multiple vorticies moving about in random directions. It was also an eerie green-gray color (green = lots of energy). Fortunately for us, the storm was in it's final rope out phase, dotting short-lived damage around our area, but leaving most alone. We did get another round of tennis ball sized hail and a lot of rain. Walking into work the next morning, I picked up a piece of paper that turned out to be a W-2 of someone whose house was disintegrated to the foundation. I made contact with them on Facebook that afternoon, rejoicing that they were OK. It's in the mail to their PO box. Hopefully, this is the last round of this stuff for the year. Thanks also for the emails and phone calls from my meteor buddies. You guys rock (pardon the pun). Literally, 100s of miles from where the tornadoes devastated entire towns, people have found the personal photographs and documents of people raining from the sky. Re: [meteorite-list] Zapotectite- what kinda name is that?
Brian, This is great news and very interesting news. . Povenmire does not name them in the paper posted previously found here; http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2011/pdf/1224.pdf But another paper I saw calls them Belizean tektites and tikal tektites. They say some were found in Mayan Ruins? I like your names better. Do you have any pictures to post? Would love to see them. Thanks. Carl brian burrer brim...@gmail.com wrote: In my previous post I referred to the new tektites from Belize as Zapotectites. [meteorite-list] AD - Another small batch
Hello everybody, I just uploaded another small batch of new pieces to my website: _www.IMPACTIKA.com_ (http://www.IMPACTIKA.com) As usual an ecclectic bunch, from Johnstown to Jumapalo, and Atoka, Kelly, Park Forest. And three distingued specimens with Huss numbers: Loop, Wellman A and Wellman C. And that will probably be the last batch until I am back from the Ensisheim Show in France. I'll be gone from June 14 to June 24, but I'll do my best to keep an eye on my emails. Any questions, let me know. And have a great weekend. Anne M. [meteorite-list] NASA busts woman selling a moon rock
Apologies if this has been recently posted. I'm only posting the first little bit of the article. Here's the source, which would be easier to read there: http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-052511a.html http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-052511a.html May 25, 2011 — A woman's attempt to sell a purported $1.7 million moon rock was thwarted last week when the buyer she met with turned out to be an undercover agent working for NASA. The sting, which according to the Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff's Dept. came after several months of investigation, took place at a Denny's restaurant in Lake Elsinore, Calif., about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The woman, who authorities did not identify, was detained but not arrested pending the moon rock being verified as being of lunar origin. It's possible this is a moon rock, but it has to be tested first, Gail Robinson, deputy inspector general at NASA, told the Los Angeles Times. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
