Hi, List, The "Space Ball" is a "metal-lined composite overwrapped pressure vessel" --- you can Google that phrase and find lots about them. A blog in the Washington Post says we can expect much more space junk like it to fall: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/mysterious-space-ball-drops-on-namibia--nothing-mysterious-about-it/2011/12/23/gIQAlaXiDP_blog.html Here's a maker of space vehicle components that shows one very similar to the Namibian space ball: http://www.psi-pci.com/Products.htm However, such tanks are widely used on Earth (and only on Earth) for gas storage, so maybe it didn't fall that far (like, off the back of the truck, once emptied). Re: [meteorite-list] New fall...Mars / Nice inside too
You're right Jeff, I am very sorry, I was excited, and still excited anyway... I was there Tuesday, after receiving pictures the past week and when you saw the stones and talk with the nomads (with Marocan dealer translating) the reality of an observed fall is more than possible...anyway fall or not, this is a great meteorite for science ! By the way, I personnaly saw a few hundred grams of fragments and very few individuals. From my sources we are talking about a few hundred grams to a few kilos. But as I noticed previously there is enough material for science and collectors (considering the small meteorite market and the availabilty of many small fragments around 1g or less) but there aren't kilos and kilos as some other people are suggesting. Hi Anita and all, I have the original 94g Thuathe stone found on the roof of a dwelling which was included in the original report and established the Thuathe fall as a hammer fall.
