[meteorite-list] Airship Search at Sutter's Mill

2012-05-04 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi, List,

Some of the questions about how the airship Eureka
will be used to search for meteorites are answered in:
http://www.space.com/1-meteorite-fireball-airship-search.html

It seems they are looking for "impact craters" from
this fresh fall of so-far very small fragments and they
will be doing it from an altitude of 1,000 feet.

The article says "the scientists spotted 12 possible
impact features from the April 22 fall, though they're
not sure yet if any of them are the real deal."

So, they want to find the Big Rocks, each sitting in
their crater nests, possibly surrounded by green Easter
Egg grass. My scepticism may be misplaced. If they
find 10-kilo CM's in impact pits that way, I'll have to
eat my words, possibly served on a bed of green Easter
Egg grass.

[meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill Question… (Topographic Maps)

2012-05-04 Thread Paul H.
As given in “Sutter's Mill Question..” at:
http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2012-May/084908.html
Dennis Miller asked:

“For my personal edification, what is the name of
the USGA Quadrangle map you are using. I need
to start another strewn field map, with itty bitty
dots, so far.

1. freewu2000 at yahoo.com replied:

“In Placerville I picked up 15 min topomaps named
Coloma. Also Pilot Hill to the west for where the big
one are speculated to be.”

and 2. Dennis Miller replied:

“Thanks for the map information. I did go to USGS and
ordered Coloma and Pilot Hill topos. The Coloma
(#328961) map is a 2012 aerial map.”

For GIS-minded people, free georeferenced 1:24,000
scale topographic map mosaic for all of El Dorado
County, California can be downloaded from the USDA
Natural Resource Conservation Service Geospatial
Datagateway at http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/ .
For thedownloading the to the “Order by County/Counties” at:
http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/GDGOrder.aspx .

From the above link a person can get free 1. Digital
Raster Graphic Topographic Map County Mosaic by
the NRCS, 2. and 2. high-resolution aerial imagery for
2009 and 2010. Both of these are georeferenced.
Finally, National Elevation Dataset, 3-meter resolution,
is available for download.

Individual georeferenced digital raster topographic
maps are available for free from the Cal-Atlas geospatial
clearinghouse at http://atlas.ca.gov/download.html
and the Cal-Atlas: Imagery Download Tool at
http://atlas.ca.gov/imagerySearch.html . For finding
the topographic maps check /choose the DRG data
layer in the "Download Tool" menu

Coloma 1:24,000 topographic map is “DRG O Series o38120g8.”

Pilot Hill 1:24,000 topographic map is “DRG O Series o38121g1.”

There is a choice of either collared (untrimmed) or
collarless (trimmed) DRGs (Digital Raster Graphics)
for the topographic maps.

I have loaded the individual DRGs for my field areas
into the company Ipad and used available apps to keep
track of my location as a blue dot on the DRG base I
moved around doing fieldwork. The same can be done
with many GPS units or other portable electronics.

Best wishes,

Paul h.

Re: [meteorite-list] It's a zepplin, not a blimp!

2012-05-04 Thread Matthias Bärmann

I expected that kind of precise overview, Guido - thanks to the experienced
pilot.

What was new and surprising to me is the fact that the Zeppelin NT model
(used for the Sutter's Mill hunt as well as for flying tourists over the
Lake of Constance, quite close to me) has a fly-by-wire piloting.

And I agree completely with you: I can't imagine a successful meteorite hunt
via airship!

Best as ever,
Matthias

Hallo Matthias,

A dirigible has an internal, light weight, rigid, geometric, metal frame and
may have several separate, sealed, spaces for helium as a lifting medium. A
blimp ( Named after Englander Oberst Blimp) has usually one unsupported gas
container. Literally a gas bag.

Count (Graf) von Zeppelin designed the first of the practical, passenger
carrying, airships in the late 1920's. Others had been built and used during
World War One by the fatherland in night bombing raids to London.

The Macon, Los Angeles, and the Georgia and several others were operated by
the US Navy in the 1930's. They all met their demise due to extreme weather
(winds aloft) and pilot error. We all know what happened to the Hindenburg
at Lakehurst. (Static electricity and hydrogen do not go well together.)

Blimps were used successfully by the US Navy for detecting untersebooten
with some success. Even being deployed from ship while underway for convoy
protection. Another popular use was to deploy and tether blimps fitted with
dangling cables above to discourage Luftwaffe strafing attacks.

I have been checked out in the Goodyear sponsored blimp here in Las Vegas
and have made several successful flights. I do not care to fly airships as
they are hard to control in surface winds over 10K and near impossible aloft
in turbulence.

I do not believe that the very beautiful craft being planned to look for
meteorites is going to provide any success, as the terrain and the resulting
up and down drafts are going to force the pilot to maintain at least 1000'
of clearance while refraining from even attempting stationary positioning.
The ship will go whatever way the air mass is moving, no matter what he does
with the articulated propulsion units and tail thruster.

Thank you for the opportunity to expound on my favorite lifelong
addiction...flight.

Re: [meteorite-list] It's a zepplin, not a blimp!

2012-05-04 Thread Count Deiro
Hallo Matthias,

A dirigible has an internal, light weight, rigid, geometric, metal frame and
may have several separate, sealed, spaces for helium as a lifting medium. A
blimp ( Named after Englander Oberst Blimp) has usually one unsupported gas
container. Literally a gas bag.

Count (Graf) von Zeppelin designed the first of the practical, passenger
carrying, airships in the late 1920's. Others had been built and used during
World War One by the fatherland in night bombing raids to London.

The Macon, Los Angeles, and the Georgia and several others were operated by the
US Navy in the 1930's. They all met their demise due to extreme weather (winds
aloft) and pilot error. We all know what happened to the Hindenburg at
Lakehurst. (Static electricity and hydrogen do not go well together.)

Blimps were used successfully by the US Navy for detecting untersebooten with
some success. Even being deployed from ship while underway for convoy
protection. Another popular use was to deploy and tether blimps fitted with
dangling cables above to discourage Luftwaffe strafing attacks.

I have been checked out in the Goodyear sponsored blimp here in Las Vegas and
have made several successful flights. I do not care to fly airships as they are
hard to control in surface winds over 10K and near impossible aloft in
turbulence.

I do not believe that the very beautiful craft being planned to look for
meteorites is going to provide any success, as the terrain and the resulting up
and down drafts are going to force the pilot to maintain at least 1000' of
clearance while refraining from even attempting stationary positioning. The
ship will go whatever way the air mass is moving, no matter what he does with
the articulated propulsion units and tail thruster.

Thank you for the opportunity to expound on my favorite lifelong
addiction...flight.

[meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill Find Page - Updated and Summary

2012-05-04 Thread Michael Gilmer
Since building a "find tally" page for this Sutter's Mill fall, I have
been contacted by a wide range of people who are involved with the
hunt for stones. Using this information, reports to this List, and
media reports, I have assembled a running count of finds and an
approximation of the TKW. This information is by no means definitive,
but it does closely cross-check against Dr. Peter Jenniskens' official
listing. It contains a few finds that are not listed on his official
page that has coordinates for most of the finds. I don't know if this
is because they have not been reported to him yet, or he has simply
has not updated the official list yet. The list I have compiled is
current as of this writing at approx. 3:30pm EST.

Highlights -

->I would call this a ballpark figure - the TKW is : 240.32g

This does not include reported finds without weights or finds that
cannot be verified or cross-checked.

->There have been approx. 30 individual finds. There are of course
likely to more than this.

->The current main mass is the Monroe 19.1g stone

->There is one confirmed hammer stone - The Matin stone (~12.5g)
struck a garage.

->All of the stones are freshly-crusted and give the appearance
expected of a carbonaceous chondrite of the CM, CI, or other similar
type. Oriented stones with striking roll-over lips and textbook
orientation features have been seen. Many of the stones broke during
in-flight fragmentation or upon impact.

->The expected meteorwrongs have surfaced. Terrestrial nodules and
asphalt slags have been reported and ruled out.

->The obligatory eBay "new Sutter's Mill Huge Meteorite" has been
offered for a mere $700,000. Any takers?;)

I am updating this page multiple times a day, so check it frequently
for updates.

Re: [meteorite-list] It's a zepplin, not a blimp!

2012-05-04 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Stuart, List

1. A blimp (technically called a "pressure airship") is
a powered, steerable, lighter-than-air vehicle whose
shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases
within its envelope. A blimp has no rigid internal
structure; if a blimp deflates, it loses its shape.

2. A rigid airship has a framework surrounding one
or more individual gas cells, and maintains its shape
by virtue of its rigid framework and not the pressure
of its lifting gas.

3. A zeppelin is a rigid airship manufactured by a
particular company, the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin of
Germany (the "Zeppelin Airship Construction
Company"), which was founded by Count Ferdinand
von Zeppelin.

4. A semi-rigid airship, like a blimp, maintains its
aerodynamic shape from internal gas pressure, but
it has a partial rigid frame, usually in the form of a
keel, which supports and distributes loads and
provides structural integrity during maneuvering.
The modern Zeppelin NT, such as the Eureka, is
a semi-rigid airship rather than a blimp.

5. A dirigible is any lighter-than-air craft that is
both powered and steerable (as opposed to free
floating, like a balloon). Blimps, rigid airships,
and semi-rigid airships like the Zeppelin NT are
all dirigibles.

Yes Phil you are indeed correct. A blimp describes people with a lot of excess
weight like Rush Limbaugh, witch can't get off the ground.
Where as a dirigible weighs much more less, even with passengers.
You have used common sense in catching this error.

Phil, List,

As the sarcastic individual who suggested a
need for Blimp Patches, I apologize. It is, literally,
a Zeppelin, built by the Zeppelin company in
Friedrichshafen, Germany, home of the original
Zeppelins. At 246 feet long, she stretches 15
feet longer than a standard Boeing 747 and 50
feet longer than the largest commercial blimps
flying today. It is named "Eureka," nicely matching
the history of Sutter's Mill. Maybe the name will
bring good luck.

http://www.airshipventures.com/about
Unlike the original Zeppelins, it is a semi-rigid
design, lacking a full envelope frame like the old
ones. However, it is made of carbon fibre and
aluminum, has very sophisticated motive control,
with vectored thrust and fly-by-wire controls, and
has incredible maneuverability.

That said, trying to maneuver close to the ground
in that terrain in a weightless craft almost as long
as a football field is a daunting prospect. All old
airshipmen know the dangers are near the ground,
not in the sky.

Zeppelin Patches?

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: April 26, 2012 - May 01, 2012

2012-05-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Opportunity Getting Ready to Leave Her Winter Perch -
sols 2927-2934, April 26, 2012 - May 01, 2012:

Opportunity is still positioned on the north end of Cape York on the rim of
Endeavour Crater with an approximate 15-degree northerly tilt, but not for
much longer.

With the improvement in solar insolation and the recent modest dust cleaning
events on the solar arrays, the project has determined that the rover has
sufficient energy resources to begin moving again on level terrain. Therefore,
Opportunity will soon be backing down off her winter perch and resume driving
on the near-level terrain around the north end of Cape York.

Radio Doppler tracking passes for the geo-dynamic investigation are continuing
for now with passes performed on Sols 2935, 2936, 2937 and 2940 (April 26, 27,
28 and May 1, 2012). The project is also finishing the campaign of Microscopic
Imager mosaics and Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer measurements of the
extended region around the surface rock target "Amboy." These measurements
were performed on Sols 2935, 2937 and 2940 (April 26, 28 and May 1, 2012). An
extended thermal behavior test of the inertial measurement unit on the rover
was performed on Sol 2938 (April 29, 2012), and found to be in good order.

As of Sol 2940 (May 1, 2012), solar array energy production was 365 watt-hours
with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.480 and an improved solar array dust
factor of 0.534.

Total odometry is unchanged at 21.35 miles (34,361.37 meters).

[meteorite-list] Paydirt at 8-Year-Old Mars Rover's 'New Landing Site'

2012-05-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2012-124

Paydirt at 8-Year-Old Mars Rover's 'New Landing Site'
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
May 03, 2012

A report in the May 4 edition of the journal Science details
discoveries Opportunity made in its first four months at the rim of Endeavour
Crater, including key findings reported at a geophysics conference in
late 2011.

Opportunity completed its original three-month mission on
Mars eight years ago. It reached Endeavour last summer, three years after
the rover's science team chose Endeavour as a long-term destination. This
crater is about 4 billion years old and 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter.

The impact that excavated the crater left a jumble of fused-together rock
fragments around the rim. In a chunk brought to the surface by a later,
much smaller impact into the rim, Opportunity found evidence that the
original impact released heated, underground water that deposited zinc
in that rock. Later after the impact, cool water flowed through cracks
in the ground near the edge of the crater and deposited veins of the mineral
gypsum.

"These bright mineral veins are different from anything seen
previously on Mars, and they tell a clear story of water flowing through
cracks in the rocks," said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca,
N.Y. He is the principal investigator for Opportunity and lead author
of the new report by 27 researchers. "From landing until just before reaching
the Endeavour rim, Opportunity was driving over sandstone made of sulfate
grains that had been deposited by water and later blown around by the
wind. These gypsum veins tell us about water that flowed through the rocks
at this exact spot. It's the strongest evidence for water that we've ever
seen with Opportunity."

For the past four months, the solar-powered rover
has been working at one outcrop on the Endeavour rim, called Greeley Haven.
Reduced daylight during the Martian winter, and accumulated dust on the
rover's solar array, have kept energy too low for driving.

"The days are now growing longer, and the sun is moving higher in the sky at
Endeavour Crater. We expect Opportunity to resume driving in the next two
months
and continue exploring other parts of the crater's rim," said Mars Exploration
Rover Project Manager John Callas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
Pasadena, Calif.

Researchers hope to get Opportunity to one of the deposits
of clay minerals that have been detected in Endeavour's rim by observations
from orbit. These minerals could be evidence of a non-acidic wet phase
of the region's environmental history.

"Exploring Endeavour Crater is like having a new landing site," said JPL's
Timothy Parker, a co-author of the new report. "That's not just because of
the difference in the geology here compared to what we saw during most of
the first eight years, but also because there's a whole vista before us
inviting much more exploration."

Opportunity and its rover twin, Spirit, completed their three-month prime
missions
on Mars in April 2004. Both rovers continued for years of bonus, extended
missions. Both have made important discoveries about wet environments
on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting microbial
life. Spirit stopped communicating in 2010.

NASA launched the next-generation Mars rover, car-size Curiosity of the Mars
Science Laboratory mission, on Nov. 26 for arrival at Mars' Gale Crater in
August 2012.

Landing successfully is quite a challenge, and the Mars Science
Laboratory/Curiosity
mission pioneers a new landing method to enable use of a heavier rover.
Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as
any previous Mars rover. Its size and mass accommodate a science payload
designed to study whether the landing region has had environmental conditions
favorable for supporting microbial life, including chemical ingredients
for life.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project and Mars Science
Laboratory Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.
More information about Opportunity is online at http://www.nasa.gov/rovers

Sounds to me more like a publicity stunt from the blimp company, offered
to scientists "free" for publicity they can get for their blimp rides.
Pretty good marketing on the company's part, IMO. As for scientists,
pretty sure they are going for free, just their fixed overhead expense
will be lost to the government, their grant, private company or whatever
combination they work under. Surely they told their bosses they would do
it on a weekend, or work the weekend to make it up, it's all funny money
anyway and anyways, in their business and all of government in general
"Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.", so
nothing really lost and they will love their jobs more. Who among us
wouldn't go in a heartbeat, come'on.

Anyway if they follow the estimate trajectory line they conceivably might
see something from a different perspective, like Tunguska :-P, but it
really sounds more like they are goofing off. Well, they have the chance
to get the last laugh.

Scientists routinely use expensive fitted jets to stay aloft many hours
during meteor showers just to get better sampling of the action from the
higher altitude. I can see where one idea led to another. At least Sky
Adventures or whatever it's called will see a spike of business.

Best wishes
Doug

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite main mass hunting with a blimp

2012-05-04 Thread Richard Montgomery
Historically the tall grass in our foothills turns completely brown by
mid-May, just in time for all the fox-tails and rattlesnakeschap time.
It doesn't take long after the first October (sometimes September) rains to
knock the tall brown grasses down...then there is about a month or two
before the new green begins to blush-up (gold-detectors also know this
time-zone as 'detecting-season').

Granted, the grass is tall, but it'll be easier to see through when dry.
The biggest trouble will be matting-down, as it will begin to lay
horizontal.

Good fortune to whoever's still up here. I hope to run into anyone who is.

Watch out for the blimp !

A new way of hunting the Sutter's Mill 'main mass':

" Scientists today are mounting a massive search in the Sierra Nevada
foothills for meteorite fragments [...] Experts from NASA and the SETI
institute are en route to Sacramento this morning aboard a zeppelin
provided by Airship Ventures, based at Moffett Field in the Bay Area.
They were expected to stop briefly at McClellan Park airfield around 11
a.m., then lift off again to spend the afternoon surveying foothill
regions of Placer and El Dorado counties. "

2012-05-04 Thread Michael Farmer
indeed, had a great dinner with some of the NASA people, it all makes sense and
is on the up and up. blimp company offered their services free of charge and
are now on the cover of many newspapers, not bad marketing, and NASA gets long
slow flyover of the strewn field searching for clear areas and photographing
terrain to hunt in as google earth is very out of date in this area. win win
for all.

Re: [meteorite-list] Using an airship to spot good search areas

2012-05-04 Thread chris handler
Professor Phil Bland, who runs the fireball camera network throughout
the Nullarbor, here in Australia, mentioned to me last year that they
have a UAV to aid in their searches. I don't know if it has proven
successful yet or not, but I'd imagine if it was both slow and low
flying, it could be useful in exploring ground that is either too
distant or too difficult to search by foot.

Hi, Sonny.

Great pictures, thanks for posting them. And what a spectacular find, congrats!

Have fun on Trouble Maker. I did the entire middle fork for my
buddy's bachelor party years ago. Tunnel Chute Rapid was a blast!
