[meteorite-list] Potential meteorite fall in Arizona

2013-09-17 Thread Marc Fries
Howdy all

Last night there was a bright fireball over western Arizona that was
captured on three allsky cameras, about three dozen eyewitness reports, and at
least two radars. The radar features line up with the path expected from the
other sources, and so there's a decent chance that meteorites may be found from
this event. We have a page up on the Galactic Analytics site, as the transfer
to PSI is still ticking over.

http://wp.me/p2AyTK-jd

Good luck!

Cheers,
Marc Fries

Re: [meteorite-list] Seymchan Crystals - worth a look

2013-09-17 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Gary and List,

I thought the same thing when I saw it. This would be something to
hand cut. You can creep it along and react quicker during the cut - a
cutting jig would be more prone to breakage I bet.

But, one could clear-coat the part-slices that are 100% olivine.
Generally, I am against coatings of any kind on meteorites, but I
wouldn't see any harm in a purely aesthetic piece that has no metal
involved in it. Without in the inherent contamination issues that
coatings have, the piece should be stable and more robust if coated
properly.

Except for cases like this, I would shun coatings personally.

Best case scenario - a few pieces crumble away during cutting, but a
sizeable slice remains intact and that can be coated to further
stabilize it.

Worst case scenario - every slice crumbles on the saw and you are left
with a pile of wet and loose olivines.

I once cut some volcanic olivine bombs into slices. They were
entirely crystalline olivine with no binding matrix or inclusions of
any kind. They did have a tendency to break during cutting and
polishing, but a few held together and looked quite nice. But, I do
recall they were tricky to work with and it didn't seem like it was
worth the trouble in hindsight.

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Seymchan Crystals - worth a look

2013-09-17 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Hello Ruben and List,

Holy cow! Worth a dozen looks!

MikeG. inquired:

"Are you going to slice that up? If it could be sliced thinly,
without breakage, I bet the resulting specimens would look
awesome."

On the other hand, if the attempt to slice it up fails leaving a
mess of breakage, this will come close to a tragedy, a sin!

Ruben will have to find out how fragile or solid the olivine cluster
is and if it is worth taking the risk. I concur with MikeG. that the
result would look awesome / breathtaking / stunning / etc.

Glad I don't have to take a decision ;-)

Best from rainy, cloudy
southern Germany,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] NASA Highlights Asteroid Grand Challenge at World Maker Faire

2013-09-17 Thread Ron Baalke

September 17, 2013

Sarah Ramsey
Headquarters, Washington
202-358-1694
sarah.ram...@nasa.gov

MEDIA ADVISORY M13-149

NASA Highlights Asteroid Grand Challenge at World Maker Faire

NASA is reaching out to a new community for ideas on how to find and track
potentially hazardous asteroids, and protect the planet from their impacts.
The World Maker Faire is being held Sept. 21-22 at the New York Hall of
Science, 47-01 111th St., in New York.

The World Maker Faire is a festival of invention, creativity and
resourcefulness – the exact qualities NASA is looking for to help in
solving the global challenge asteroid threats present.

NASA Chief Technologist Mason Peck will be on hand to talk about how Makers
can help shape space exploration and be a critical player in NASA's
asteroid initiative.

"Unlike traditional NASA missions of exploration and science, this grand
challenge is driven by the idea that protecting our planet is an issue bigger
than any one program, mission or country," Peck said. "For the first
time, NASA has reached out to industry, academia, stakeholder organizations
and private citizens for ideas on how to find, track and deflect asteroids.
These partnerships represent a new way of doing business for NASA and a call
to action for Makers: join us to become a critical part of the future of
space exploration."

NASA will offer Makers a chance to program science hardware and learn how
small, do-it-yourself projects might be used to help track and understand
asteroids, using their own personal computers. NASA also will showcase the
Centennial Challenges Program, with winning teams and technology from the
Astronaut Glove and Sample Robot Return challenges.

Media interested in attending Maker Faire should register online at:

http://makerfaire.com

Media interested in speaking to Peck should contact Sarah Ramsey at
sarah.ram...@nasa.gov .

NASA's asteroid initiative has two parts: the mission by astronauts to
explore an asteroid and a grand challenge to protect the planet. It is
included in President Obama's fiscal year 2014 budget request for NASA, and
leverages the agency's progress on asteroid discovery and study, the Space
Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft and cutting-edge technology
development.

For more information about NASA's asteroid initiative, visit:

Hello Listers,

I find this to be interesting, I wonder what Chelyabinsk meteorite will

once the scripture is decoded :)

"For many centuries, the workings of the celestial realm were
considered
wondrous, and frequently indicated the intentions of a higher being.
 Solar
eclipses were times of fear, and fireballing meteorites could indicate
a deity’s
anger. One can only imagine what our distant ancestors would have made
of the
Chelyabinsk meteorite that ripped through the Urals regions in Russia
in
February of this year. Turning an otherwise ordinary morning chaotic
with a
blinding flash of light and a shockwave that splintered windows
throughout
Chelyabinsk and the neighboring towns, no superstition was required to
make the

meteorite’s arrival a frightening event."

"However, it seems the old days aren’t quite dead. A cult has sprung up
around
the fallen meteorite, claiming it carries scriptural writings and can
only be

touched by psychic priests"

Re: [meteorite-list] XRF gun at Tucson 2014?

2013-09-17 Thread cdtucson
Mike,
Blaine Reed has been doing this for years.
The XRF does not give the same readings as a microprobe does but, Blaine has
his own data base of many different types of meteorites so, he is very good at
interpreting what it is you might have. He compares your rocks numbers with
known type meteorite numbers and can make you happy or sad . He does this for a
very low cost and you cannot ask for help from a nicer guy than Blaine. Not
sure if anybody does the magnetic susceptibility tests.
Best regards,

Here is a capture of this fireball From the Parker, AZ All Sky Sentinel

http://pages.suddenlink.net/kamacite/m20130917_061040_095.mp4

At this time, we have data for two cameras, Parker, AZ and Yucca Valley,
CA. Data has been sent to the Radar Guru's.

Pat Branch and I looked at the Yuma and Phoenix Radar and nothing jumps
out. Last check on the AMS site, about 17 witnesses reported.

That's all the info for this time period.

[meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk Meteorite Delivered…Scriptures?

Hello Listers,

I find this to be interesting, I wonder what Chelyabinsk meteorite will tell us
once the scripture is decoded :)

"For many centuries, the workings of the celestial realm were considered
wondrous, and frequently indicated the intentions of a higher being.  Solar
eclipses were times of fear, and fireballing meteorites could indicate a
deity’s anger. One can only imagine what our distant ancestors would have made
of the Chelyabinsk meteorite that ripped through the Urals regions in Russia in
February of this year. Turning an otherwise ordinary morning chaotic with a
blinding flash of light and a shockwave that splintered windows throughout
Chelyabinsk and the neighboring towns, no superstition was required to make the
meteorite’s arrival a frightening event."

"However, it seems the old days aren’t quite dead. A cult has sprung up around
the fallen meteorite, claiming it carries scriptural writings and can only be
touched by psychic priests"
