A famous use of tax payers money:

The 3 million dollar shrimp project was cut due to the 1 billion dollar
minnow project::

Here is a link to the now famous Mantis Shrimp:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=shrimp+treadmill&ei=UTF-8&fr=yff40c

I bet the Mantis Shrimp could mop the floor with the imported Minnow. I can
see it now, pay-per-view, "Sammy the Shrimp Versus Meany the Minnow"

Yeah, well CA doesn't put out as much produce as it used to. Whenever I go
back to CA from AZ, in order to visit family, I drive up and down
Interstate 5. For practically the whole I-5 part of my trip I see empty,
dusty fields where there used to be beautiful orchards and lands full of
all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Now, just dusty, empty fields..oh
yeah, and hundreds of signs that say, "Congress Created Dustbowl". Yup,
devastated, dry land, all because Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer and crew
wanted to save a minnow in the California Aqueduct. If I'm not mistaken,
that minnow is not even native to the region. It was imported. That's CA
for you.

Average gasoline prices in Arizona ($2.57/gal) are about 13% lower
than California ($2.97). How does that 13% difference turn into an
almost 100% (claimed) increase in your fill-up?

California has more than 3 times the lane-miles of Arizona and it's
drivers account for 11% of ALL of the miles driven in the entire
country (more than 5 times Arizona drivers, and we have a lower
fatality rate because no one from Arizona can drive worth a damn), so
yes, our roads do get used and abused and could use some love.
Believe it or not, road maintenance is what the fuel tax is used for,
we just have a lot more roads that need maintaining.

And "most" produce comes from California. And by most we're talking a
huge majority. Some comes from Mexico, some from other places, too,
but California is our nation's produce isle.

Michael is so. Cal.

I have seen better roads in third-world countries. As far as produce

No other state even comes close to California when it comes to produce
production, so it follows that no other states would have to enact
protections as tough as California. Don't like it, then stay out of
my state (and stop eating fruits, nuts, and vegetables altogether,
chances are they were grown here).

Keeping this meteorite related, the California bug stations even look
for
firewood coming in from other states. So for example you are planning
a

meteorite
hunting trip into or through California and figure you would like to
haul
some firewood with you, you might want to know that they may or will
seize
it at the border inspection stations.

The biggest export coming from California these days is the SMOG that
overtakes neighboring states.I can usually see Needles, California and
Bull Head, Arizona on a clear day but when the wind is coming from the west,
this rotten egg smelling pollution invades our area.

We have a joke about it. Don't hang your head out your car window when
driving through this filthy pollution; It is so thick that you are most
likely to chip a tooth on it.

I've been trying to get hold of a small portion of Broken Hill but it
can only be sold within Australia. Things were great before, but not
now. Can I have a piece sent to my mum and have her package it up and
send it out of Australia? Just curious. I think not. I would then
cause problems for my mother. But then again with Victoria, it's not a
problem, all the states in Australia have different rules. Damn, I
could turn around and declare my property here in Southern California
as Australian property.. an embassy so I can call diplomatic immunity.

But I think the bottom line is, you're crossing the line and asking
for some idiot to cause you trouble. Just my thoughts.

G'Day All
I think the bottom line is, it's illegal. I have watched introduced
plant, animal, etc.. into Australia. Even though your request seems
genuine, the law is the law.

As for other comments on California, I think every state has a problem
in some way or another. As for here, gas prices are high, taxes are
high, freeways are congested and yes Michael F. it's a free for all on
the freeways.

What I'd like to see is the bullshit about dredging for gold in
California shoved up some political hierarchy's arse. Dredging is good
for the environment, the fish love it. You stir up all that good food.
But try to tell that to the politicians. That's all I've got to say
on this post.

Cheers

Well ... kinda true for Florida ... if you are driving a cargo van, you are
REQUIRED to stop. I have a warning ticket to prove it! Chased me down, lights
flashing! ... and the officer had a photograph of the sign that states such
about cargo vans. Told him that I gone in and out of the state a LOT of times
and had never stopped nor been stopped (in a VERY nice way!) ... his response?
"It's a slow day for us!" At least he was honest and had a sense of humor ...
thus a warning ticket!

[meteorite-list] Asteroid 2014 UR116, A 400-meter Sized Near-Earth Asteroid, Represents No Threat to the Earth

Asteroid 2014 UR116, A 400-meter Sized Near-Earth Asteroid, Represents
No Threat to the Earth

NASA/JPL Near-Earth Object Program Office
December 8, 2014

Some recent press reports have suggested that an asteroid designated 2014
UR116, found on October 27, 2014, at the MASTER-II observatory in Kislovodsk,
Russia, represents an impact threat to the Earth. While this approximately
400-meter sized asteroid has a three year orbital period around the sun
and returns to the Earth's neighborhood periodically, it does not represent
a threat because it's orbital path does not pass sufficiently close to
the Earth's orbit.

Furthermore, Tim Spahr, Director of the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge
Massachusetts, has also re-computed this object's orbit after noticing
that it was the same as an object observed six years ago. Using both sets
of observations, the future motion of this asteroid was carried further
forward in time using the automatic computations made by the Sentry system
at NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
These computations rule out this object as an impact threat to Earth (or
any other planet) for at least the next 150 years.

Any statements about risk for impact of discovered asteroids and comets
should be verified by scientists and the media by accessing NASA' Near
Earth Object (NEO) Program web site at

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/

or the European equivalent, the NEO Dynamic Site at

http://newton.dm.unipi.it/neodys/index.php?pc=4.1 .

Florida, but there are no such stations on the many alternate routes.
The inspection stations along the interstate are for commercial
traffic and private drivers are not required to stop. You can drive
unchecked across the border with unicorn horns and moonshine in the

No other state even comes close to California when it comes to produce
production, so it follows that no other states would have to enact
protections as tough as California. Don't like it, then stay out of
my state (and stop eating fruits, nuts, and vegetables altogether,
chances are they were grown here).

My only problem with California drivers is that they all stay in left lane no
matter how slow they are going. I passed a thousand or more cars in the right
lane because it is always clear. California has every right to try to protect
it's agriculture.
By the way, Australia is same, checkpoints at Western Australia border and all
produce destroyed.

[meteorite-list] NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds Clues to How Water Helped Shape Martian Landscape

2014-12-08 Thread Ron Baalke via Meteorite-list

December 8, 2014

NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds Clues to How Water Helped Shape Martian Landscape

Observations by NASA's Curiosity Rover indicate Mars' Mount Sharp was built
by sediments deposited in a large lake bed over tens of millions of years.

This interpretation of Curiosity's finds in Gale Crater suggests ancient
Mars maintained a climate that could have produced long-lasting lakes at many
locations on the Red Planet.

"If our hypothesis for Mount Sharp holds up, it challenges the notion that
warm and wet conditions were transient, local, or only underground on
Mars," said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity deputy project scientist at NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. "A more radical explanation is that
Mars' ancient, thicker atmosphere raised temperatures above freezing
globally, but so far we don't know how the atmosphere did that."

Why this layered mountain sits in a crater has been a challenging question
for researchers. Mount Sharp stands about 3 miles (5 kilometers) tall, its
lower flanks exposing hundreds of rock layers. The rock layers -
alternating between lake, river and wind deposits -- bear witness to the
repeated filling and evaporation of a Martian lake much larger and
longer-lasting than any previously examined close-up.

"We are making headway in solving the mystery of Mount Sharp," said Curiosity
Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology
in Pasadena, California. "Where there's now a mountain, there may have once
been a series of lakes."

Curiosity currently is investigating the lowest sedimentary layers of Mount
Sharp, a section of rock 500 feet (150 meters) high dubbed the Murray
formation. Rivers carried sand and silt to the lake, depositing the sediments
at the mouth of the river to form deltas similar to those found at river
mouths on Earth. This cycle occurred over and over again.

"The great thing about a lake that occurs repeatedly, over and over, is that
each time it comes back it is another experiment to tell you how the
environment works," Grotzinger said. "As Curiosity climbs higher on Mount
Sharp, we will have a series of experiments to show patterns in how the
atmosphere and the water and the sediments interact. We may see how the
chemistry changed in the lakes over time. This is a hypothesis supported by
what we have observed so far, providing a framework for testing in the coming
year."

After the crater filled to a height of at least a few hundred yards and the
sediments hardened into rock, the accumulated layers of sediment were
sculpted over time into a mountainous shape by wind erosion that carved away
the material between the crater perimeter and what is now the edge of the
mountain.

On the 5-mile (8-kilometer) journey from Curiosity's 2012 landing site to
its current work site at the base of Mount Sharp, the rover uncovered clues
about the changing shape of the crater floor during the era of lakes.

"We found sedimentary rocks suggestive of small, ancient deltas stacked on
top of one another," said Curiosity science team member Sanjeev Gupta of
Imperial College in London. "Curiosity crossed a boundary from an environment
dominated by rivers to an environment dominated by lakes."

Despite earlier evidence from several Mars missions that pointed to wet
environments on ancient Mars, modeling of the ancient climate has yet to
identify the conditions that could have produced long periods warm enough for
stable water on the surface.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project uses Curiosity to assess ancient,
potentially habitable environments and the significant changes the Martian
environment has experienced over millions of years. This project is one
element of NASA's ongoing Mars research and preparation for a human mission
to the planet in the 2030s.

"Knowledge we're gaining about Mars' environmental evolution by deciphering
how Mount Sharp formed will also help guide plans for future missions to seek
signs of Martian life," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars
Exploration Program at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

JPL, managed by the California Institute of Technology, built the rover and
manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

No other state even comes close to California when it comes to produce
production, so it follows that no other states would have to enact
protections as tough as California. Don't like it, then stay out of
my state (and stop eating fruits, nuts, and vegetables altogether,
chances are they were grown here).

[meteorite-list] Trying to contact Michael Braum (wackygarbage2009 on ebay)

2014-12-08 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie via Meteorite-list
Hello,

I try to contact for nearly 15 days Michael Braum (wackygarbage2009 on ebay).
He's IMCA member.

He bought from me 4 meteorites on ebay but never paid and didn't give answers
to my messages.

Does anyone know if he's still alive ?

Thanks a lot,

Keeping this meteorite related, the California bug stations even look for
firewood coming in from other states. So for example you are planning a
meteorite
hunting trip into or through California and figure you would like to haul
some firewood with you, you might want to know that they may or will seize

it at the border inspection stations.

I have taken to growing cuttings of Plumeria - the
