First off, many thanks to everyone (the several dozen of you) who requested details about the contents of my collection. Also, the pieces Anne lists below are just a sampling of the ones she requested I pull out in order to have them in time for Tucson. I believe there are about 35 pieces currently on the way to her. There are about another 135 still here, to be shipped after she returns from the showincluding a lot more "good ones". Again, thank you to everyone who expressed an interest, and I wish those of you who may acquire any of these pieces, at least the same amount of enjoyment that they brought me over the years. [meteorite-list] AD / SALE - Collection for Sale
It’s been a long time since I posted anything to this list, having stopped collecting meteorites back in May 2005, but I still receive the digests and read them with interest. Since then, my collection has been packed away and stored in my den closet….a horrible waste of these important relics. I have decided that it makes no sense to continue treating them like this, so I am going to offer the collection for sale, first, to the members of this list. For now, the collection is being offered only intact. I have no interest at this time of breaking it up and dealing with selling it off piece-by-piece. Should there be no interest in the collection as a whole, I will have to decide if it’s worth my time and effort to break it up and sell off individually, or just pack it up again and put it back in storage. The collection consists of approximately 190 different finds/falls/locations. (I say “approximately” because I need to pull the records out of the box, but that’s the number I recall.) Specimen sizes range from just a few milligrams of one or two rarer locations, to irons of 700+ grams. There are only a small handful of NWAs, as they never really interested me. The vast majority of the collection being true “named” specimens. For what it’s worth, the total weight of the specimens is around 4800 grams (again, going from memory). So in order to hopefully facilitate a quick sale, I am offering it at a significant discount to what was my total acquisition cost as of when I stopped actively collecting. I haven't kept up with price trends since then, so if they've at least held somewhat steady, this represents a great deal, and if prices have risen at all since then, it should be a real bargain. If anyone is interested please reply to me directly, off list, at the email address listed below. I can provide a spreadsheet of what’s included, and we can take it from there. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg meteorite
The tornado that destroyed Greensburg was rated as an F5the most powerful class of tornado. The MINIMUM wind speed of an F5 is 261 mphand up to 318 mhp. Much less powerful tornados pick up cars and trucks weighing a ton or more and easily toss them over 100 yards/meters. So a "puny" little 1000 pound rock wouldn't present too much of a challenge. Some basic information: http://www.tornadoproject.com/fscale/fscale.htm > It could be tough to find. If a dense rock like that was in a field > and a > tornado went directly over it, it probably would not have moved at > all. > However, it was suspended in a building of comparably much lighter > material > with a large surface area. Having > virtually > no aerodynamic properties It is most likely within a 1/2 mile > radius of > where it was originally housed. It may even be embedded in the soft > earth. I agree with Charlie. I don't think it would be moved much, if any. I think a wind greater than the terminal velocity of the object in free fall would be needed to lift it, and that would be several hundred miles per hour. If it is truly missing, I would be willing to bet on theft. Mike Fowler Chicago AOL now offers free email to everyone. [meteorite-list] Collection for Sale
After much reflection on and review of my interests and goals, I have decided to sell my meteorite collection and concentrate on other interests that hold deeper meaning for me on a personal level. I will first offer the collection intact, to those on this list. Should there be no interest in it as a whole, I will sell the pieces off individually via eBay over the next few months, beginning in June. My asking price is significantly under my cost, as I would prefer to just sell it and be done with the process (like removing a band-aid). A few details: There are 191 pieces, representing 172 distinct locations. Sizes range from specks to 700+ grams, and everything in between. There are three Lunar meteorites, and three SNCs. For what itâs worth, the total weight of the collection is approximately 4,927 grams. (There are also a few tektites and impactites acquired along the way, which are not included in the specimen count or total weight listed above.) If anyone is interested in receiving a list (Excel format) of what the collection contains and my asking price, please email me DIRECTLY at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Again, please note that at this time the collection is only available intact, and offers for individual pieces will not be considered. Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay asks for your help!
Well, I think it's a good start, although I don't know how far it should go. Some things to consider: Could IMCA be held responsible in any way for someone who purchases something with IMCA's "blessing" which turns out to be misrepresented? What if IMCA renders an opinion that seller X is offering something not authentic, which turns out to be, or even if that the seller just challenges IMCA? What about sellers who for whatever reason choose not to belong to IMCA? Could non-membership lead to people avoiding their listings, and subject IMCA to some type of "restraint of trade" charges? Unfortunately, at least here in the US, we live in a litigious society. I don't have answers...these are just questions after reading this initial email. If someone else bids more than $X, either a day before the auction ends, or two seconds before it endswhat's the difference? Re: [meteorite-list] Bush's Space Initiative
As there are quite a few space savvy folks on this listjust asking a question pertaining to Bush's speech. He said the moon was the logical place to initiate space exploration missions. Yet the moon has harsh environmental challenges.and it seems those challenges are less on Mars. Only the distance is a problem. It would seem to me that a space station orbiting Earth would be the better place to initiate trips to Mars and beyond? I didn't personally hear the speach, but I assume some of the reasons to use the Moon would be that you can't really build a launch pad type outpost floating in space. The surface of the moon would be better, IMHO. You need places to store parts, assemble the vehicle on firm "ground", house inhabitants, etc. Expanding the ISS is probably vastly more expensive than building an outpost on the Moon (once you get there). Also, I believe they're hoping to manufacture the fuel on the Moon from the hydrogen in the trapped ice. I believe one of the most expensive parts of any lauch is the amount of weight (i.e., fuel) needed just to get that same soon-to-be-consumed fuel off the ground. Being able to send an empty vehicle to the Moon, fuel it there and then launch it from the reduced gravity of the Moon would be a tremendous savings of money. Personally I've felt we needed to make an agressive, long term commitment to something (!!) for a long time. No offense, but I feel NASA has been prostituted over the last decade or two and relegated to pandering to the public's cause du jour. I mean come ona multi-billion dollar vehicle and all the associated expenses to study the rain forrests and the "ozone hole". NASA should be for space exploration, period. We should be looking UP, not DOWN. Is it gonna be expensiveyep...progress always is. Is it gonna be dangerousyep...exploration always is. Are we going to lose astronauts due to accidentsyes, (unfortunately) we will. Craig

Fwd: [meteorite-list] Meteorites On Display In Orissa, India
Meteorites are magnetic and contain an alloy of iron and nickel mixed with silicate materials. The geologists say the meteorites that struck the state may have their origin either in Jupiter or Mars. Sigh.. Ignorance is blissor so they say. --- Begin Message --- http://www.ndtv.com/morenews/showmorestory.asp?id=44071 Meteorites on display in Orissa Sampad Mahapatra ndtv.com October 23, 2003 Bhubaneshwar - Three pieces of the extra-large meteorite that lit up the sky along coastal Orissa last month have been recovered from two villages in Kendrapara district. These are now on display at the Geological Survey of India office in Bhubaneswar for the people to have a closer look. The meteorites had caused considerable panic across the state on the night of September 27 when they crashed. As a result the extra-terrestrial objects, weighing between 500 grams and 5.7 kilograms, have aroused great curiosity especially among the school students. "I had read of these in our geography books, but I hadn't ever seen it. To see and touch it has been a great learning experience," said Shobhna Shroff, student. Meteorites are magnetic and contain an alloy of iron and nickel mixed with silicate materials. The geologists say the meteorites that struck the state may have their origin either in Jupiter or Mars. But exact details about its genesis, content and geological age will be known after laboratory tests. The pieces will be sent to the Indian Museum in Kolkata after the city exhibition for display along with nearly 600 similar pieces of meteorites. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list --- End Message ---

Re: [meteorite-list] ebay descriptions
Another thing that I have always wished for is some type of standardization in the "title" field. I first mentioned this back before there was a separate Ebay category for meteorites, and we were just lumped into the MINERALS section. You had to specifically search for the word "meteorite" to see what was available. I realize that we could never standardize the "great unwashed masses" that list meteorites, but my personal wish would be to see specimens from list members listed as follows: FIND/FALL NAME - TYPE - WEIGHT - WHOLE/SLICE/PARTSLICE/(other) I find it extremely annoying to see a location name that I'm interested in, only to click on it and see that it's a 0.00438 gram speck. If it would have said that in the title, I needn't waste my time. Of course that may not benefit the seller, but if I'm not interested in it after looking closer, the end result was the sameno sale. Re: [meteorite-list] A box to put my meteorites in...Part two
I echo the others' sentimentsnice display case !!! I'm toying with the idea of building a way to house/display my collection, in that I have two oak bookcases in my den, and am sketching plans to install slide out drawers similar to those found in "mineral cabinets" to store my specimens. Most of my meteorites are in Riker mounts, so a drawer depth of 1.5 to 2 inches would be sufficient, and the spacing between the current shelves would allow me to install between 10 and 12 drawers of that size. For those less inclined to build their own, the URL below shows some very nice cabinets. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite photography scales
Personally.I prefer the black/white centimeter scaled strips used as opposed to the cubes. Seeing one of the scales in front of a whole specimen or slice, gives me a better perspective of the true size of the specimen. I've toyed around with making one of these scales using MS Exceljust play around with setting the cell size in a row to the proper height x width, and black-fill every other cell. And while it certainly would be nice to see some type of standardization in how everyone displays their specimens, the imagination used by some people is certainly enjoyable. Re: [meteorite-list] Dealer Refunds
Let me comment from a collector's viewpoint. The person asking you to refund their money is an idiot. I've bought several meteorites that have declined in price. (Anyone want to buy 0.5 gram of Zagami at $1500 per gram?) And while my transaction took place a few years ago (at the height of the ALH84001 craze), I bought it and that's my problem. If I want to buy a piece of meteorite "X", I look around for who has some for sale. If only one dealer is offering it, I look at their price and decide if I wish to pay it. If so, and a few weeks/months later I see it for lessOh well...tough crap. If more than one dealer has it, then the aesthetics of the pieces available must be considered. Sometimes the cheapest specimen is cheapest for a reason. If you guarantee authenticity for life (which I think/hope you do), that's another thing, but for this person to ask you to refund their price after this long, and after TELLING you that they found it cheaper (?!?!)well, that's not too bright on their part. The only thing you might want to consider is the possibility of this person becoming a return customer. But then again, if this is their modus operandi, maybe you don't want them as a customer. Just my 2 grams worth. Craig
