I can attest to this. Bought one way back when, and found it very helpful as a
new collector, and will help the seasoned veteran collector too. Worth every

2016-10-13 Thread CRAIG MOODY via Meteorite-list
Hello List Members. I am selling a rather large etched slice of Silicated Campo
del Cielo. It weighs in at 1,940g; Polished and beautifully etched on both
sides. It comes with it's own custom display case and easel if you want to
display it standing up. Make me an offer here if you like, and it would save
ebay's ridiculous fees.

The very thought of it makes me cringe. The chances of getting crystals worthy
of gem-stones, is slim. IMHO it would be sacrilege to destroy one of the most
beautiful meteorite types, for a few gems and a little cash.

[meteorite-list] AD Restoration and etching service

2016-04-18 Thread CRAIG MOODY via Meteorite-list

Hello fellow list members. Over the past few years, I have been practicing my
iron meteorite slice restoration and etching procedure, and have become quite
proficient at it. I am wondering if such a service would be useful to this
community. Pricing would reflect the amount of restoration required. Heavily
corroded, and pitted specimens require a lot more work, than one that has a
little rust on it, or just needs re-polishing and etching. Thus, it would
depend on each specimen. Prices starting as low as $30, plus return shipping,
and discounts for multiple specimens.

Here are some samples of work done for others, and myself.

Let me know if I can be of service.

Hi guys.

I have found that LinkedIn automatically sends out requests without the person
knowing it, but, if the person wants to be a total dick (and I'm sure he fits
the bill) he can use it to send out these invites to each and every person on
each and every mailing list he has.  It could be a pain.

 IAU yesterday.

 URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html
Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network

TRAJECTORY AND ORBIT OF THE CHELYABINSK SUPERBOLIDE
Jiri Borovicka, Pavel Spurny, and Lukas Shrbeny, Astronomical Institute
of the Academy of Sciences, Ondrejov, Czech Republic, report that they have
computed the atmospheric trajectory and velocity of the superbolide of 2013
Feb. 15.139 UT (3h20m UT), which caused some damage in the city of
Chelyabinsk, Russia. They used seven casual video records provisionally
calibrated with Google Maps tools. The trajectory was assumed to be linear.
The geographical coordinates of selected points along the trajectory are as
 tabulated below:

Relative Longitude Latitude Height Velocity Notes
 Time (s) (deg E) (deg N) (km) (km/s)

 0.00 64.266 54.508 91.83 17.5 beginning of
 registration
 9.18 61.913 54.788 41.02 17.5 minor flare
 11.20 61.455 54.836 31.73 17.5 major flare
 12.36 61.159 54.867 25.81 17.5 flare
 13.20 60.920 54.891 21.05 12.5 minor flare
 16.20 60.606 54.922 14.94 4.3 end of
 registration

The observed trajectory was 254 km long. The azimuth of the trajectory was
279.5 degrees, and the slope was 16.5 degrees to the horizontal (for the end
point). The uncertainty of the radiant is about one degree. The uncertainty
of the position of the trajectory is about 1 km (at the beginning, up to 4
 km).
The pre-entry object that caused the superbolide was relatively fragile.
Severe fragmentation started at a height of 32 km under dynamic pressure of 4
MPa. The mass of the largest fragment, which landed in the lake Chebarkul,
was estimated to be 200-500 kg. One or two meteorites of the mass of several
tens of kg can be expected not far from the village Travniki. One piece of
mass approximately 1 kg may have landed to the northwest of Shchapino.
Numerous small fragments can be expected in the wide band located about 5 km
south of the trajectory, mostly between longitudes 60.9 and 61.35 degrees.
The blast wave, which strongly affected Chelyabinsk, was generated
between heights of 25 and 30 km. The radiant and heliocentric orbit were
 calculated to be as follows:

Apparent radiant: Right ascension 328.6 +/- 1.0 deg
 (equinox 2000.0) Declination +8.0 +/- 1.0 deg
 Velocity 17.5 +/- 0.5 km/s

Geocentric radiant: Right ascension 334.7 +/- 1.2 deg
 Declination -1.0 +/- 1.4 deg
 Velocity 13.2 +/- 0.7 km/s

 Orbit: a = 1.55 +/- 0.07 AU e = 0.50 +/- 0.02
 q = 0.768 +/- 0.011 AU Q = 2.33 +/- 0.14 AU
 (equinox 2000.0) Peri. = 109.7 +/- 1.8 deg Node = 326.41 deg
 i = 3.6 +/- 0.7 deg

The data do not allow determination of the initial mass of the object prior
to entering the atmosphere. The trajectory will be further refined in the
future, provided that proper in situ calibrations of the videos are made.

NOTE: These 'Central Bureau Electronic Telegrams' are sometimes
superseded by text appearing later in the printed IAU Circulars.

[meteorite-list] New American Iron find

2013-01-12 Thread Craig Moody

Hello Listees, and a belated Happy New Year.
Recently, I received a rather unusual 600 gram 'rock' from a friend on Geoff
Notkin's Club Space Rock. He sent it to me so that I could have a closer look
at it and give him my opinion. He had sanded a small area and noticed that was
metallic. METALLIC?? The thing is solid iron! I filed that area flat, and
polished it up and took the Nitol to it. (It was initially found in Elmore Co.
Alabama around 1920). After seeing a Widmanstatten structure appear, I felt
like a kid at Christmas! The pattern seems to be that of a medium Octahedrite,
similar to that of a Campo, but smaller. It is now going to be sent to Dr. John
Wasson via Geoff Notkin and Dr. Laurence Garvie for classification.
Here is the link to my facebook album for it. Any comments would be most
welcome.

2013-01-12 Thread Craig Moody

Hi Larry
Thanks for the input. Yes, I too initially thougt something looked wrong,
until I saw the etch. As I was admiring my handiwork, I noticed that along the
outer egde of the etched window, there seemed to be a very thin boarder of,
what looks to be, re-crystalized metal. It is possible that it was re-heated
at one time, but not enough to do any significant damage. This might explain
the unusual appearance.
All the best, Craig

Actually that is a good price for that particular model. It is listed

Re: [meteorite-list] Stolen Campo Alert, Tucson Gem Show

2012-01-27 Thread Craig Moody

Dear Geoff

Holy crap! That really sucks!!! (as I state the obvious) If you have pics of
those taken, please post them asap, so we can all help in locating them ASAP.
One thing about meteorites, is that they are like snow-flakes, where no two are
the same, and can be easilly identified.

I think that new pick you were sporting in the return to Sweden episode, would
look great planted firmly up the perp's Arse!

What a rotten way to start the show :(

Keep your chin up, my friend, and here's to a speedy recovery!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Stolen Campo Alert, Tucson Gem Show

 Dear Listees:

I am sorry to report that the window of my truck was smashed this
evening (evidently with a sledgehammer or similar), in Tucson, and a
bag containing three Campos was stolen along with various personal
items. I think there is a good chance the thieves will attempt to sell
these Campos at the gem show, so I'd like to ask all of you to please
be on the lookout for them. They will be very easy to ID, as all three
have natural holes, all have been cleaned and have the typical
blackish color of treated Campos, and are of widely varying weights. I
don't have exact weights, unfortunately, but here is a brief
 description:

 1) Small individual, less than 100 grams, resembles a human face with
 a hole in the middle

 2) Very distinctive triangular or knife blade-shaped iron with flat
faces (no thumbprints) maybe about 800 grams, with a natural hole near
the edge that makes it look very much like an alligator or dinosaur
head. Stands up naturally with the hole near the top long edge.

 3) Roundish individual, approx 1.5 kilos with smallish natural hole

If you are approached by individuals trying to sell these three irons,
please take appropriate action. I would suggest stating you'd like to
buy them and ask if you can hold onto the pieces for a couple of hours
to get them evaluated. Then call 911 and report stolen merchandise.

 I can be reached at 520 742 and i...@aerolite.org

I am offering a substantial reward for any information leading to the
 arrest of the thieves.

Thanks for reading, and for all of you currently in Tucson, enjoy the
show and PLEASE be extra vigilant with your property. Theft is on the
rise at the show and seems to get worse every year. I've heard of a
lot of showroom thefts, but this is the first gem show-related vehicle
break-in that I am aware of.

 Thanks for reading.

 Sincerely,

 Geoff N.

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact evidence in trees?

2011-12-20 Thread Craig Moody

Hello Mike and List:
First of all...Seasons Greetings to all! Hope you all get the rocks you want!

Regarding these trees. Notice that there is a very clear 90 degree seam at the
bend. What is done here is a grafting technique, where a 90 degree wedge is
taken out when the tree is very young 5years, and it is folded over on itself
, then treated with Plant growth hormones for rapid healing. It is sealed with
a wax tape Then it is shaped as it grows until it reaches the desired shape.
This is a lot of work to get the desired results. I agree with Sergey that is
is used in furniture making - very expensive furniture.

I have seen 'living' furniture too. Live trees that have been bent and grafted
into ladders, benches, chairs. Takes years to do well.

Cheers all.

Re: [meteorite-list] Pena Blanca Spring -Hammerstone?

2011-11-22 Thread Craig Moody

Hello Anne, Michael and List.

I would have to agree with Anne, in that if it struck the water, and sank to
the bottom, then it would not be considered a hammer, however, I assume that if
it hit the side of the pool and left physical evidence of that fact, then it
would be a hammer. This also leads me to ask...does a meteorite have to damage
something for it to be a hammer? What if they were pea sized individuals
(Holbrook) that hit, but left no damage. Would they be considered hammer
stones?

I have swum in such a pool many times at the base of Mt. Lemon

To my way of thinking a constructed swimming pool is a constructed

reports I had heard of merely a naturally occurring swimming hole
where a pond lay on someone's property. Therefore, Pena Blanc Spring IS
a hammer, having struck a man-made object (a man made swimming pool).

[meteorite-list] OT: Extreme Canada Mail Slow Down

2011-11-21 Thread Craig Moody

Wow, I am glad I am not the only one who is getting pissed at the mail service
to Canada. I cannot figure out who to blame, the mail services (both Canada
Post and USPS) or Customs. However, it takes only a week to get a package to,
or from, the UK and up to 4-5 weeks from the USA, regardless of the
State In any case, this length of delay is inexcuseable!
Unfortunately, I used to do Christmas shopping online, with much coming from
the USA. I won't be doing that this year, that's for sure.

Count Deiro...Nice rant buddy! Well done! I would like to add to it a bit, if
I may. I agree with you that the Unions served a purpose in the past, but now
have far too much power in many sensitive or critical areas. In fact, I would
go so as to say that they have had a major role in the downfall of the US
economy. Take the Auto industry for example. They went on strike every few
years for more money, benefits etc. to the point that a person was getting paid
$30.00 per hour, to tighten bolts, plus every possible benefit in the world.
No wonder they all went bankrupt. The selling cost of their vehicles would
have to double in order for them to break even. People wouldn't be able to buy
new cars. Do you wonder why nothing is made here anymore? Almost everything
you buy is made somewhere else (Asia).

Here endeth the rant.

 Aloha,

I was working on inputing my lineup of offerings on ebay's scheduler, when I
received the following emails from ebay stating they are removing the
international site visibility feature. Here's what the message says:

You recently created or revised this eBay listing that included the
  International Site Visibility feature:

  230676640288 NEW! NWA 6929 H4 (S2,W2) 2.77g Meteorite Full Slice,

However, we had to remove International Site Visibility from your listing.
Of course, we won't be charging you the fee for it.

Because the laws and eBay policies vary by country, sometimes items that
can be listed in your country can't be listed internationally. It's also
possible that the listing itself violated an eBay policy in another
country. In situations like this, we automatically remove the International
Site Visibility feature from the listing.

We're sorry for the inconvenience this causes.

Anyone else experience this? I never have.

 Hello again,
I just wanted to echo John's post re the lack of
posts from the members regarding the upcoming election.

Not counting the 5 emails from Anne and Maria, there are,
that I know of, 28 posts to the IMCA list regarding this election,
the vast majority from John with myself as a distant 2nd place.
There have been only five candidates that have made a statement,
with nothing from the last two.
There were a few of the congrats for running and only 2 that
were actual questions for the candidates.

We need your input so that we will become flesh and blood
people and not just a name on a piece of paper.
I know some of you through business dealings and the reverse
would be true, those few would know me.

Please, members, speak up! Ask those of us running any questions
that you feel we need to address so that you will know who to
 support.

Lastly, I know that I would like to get to know more members,
so to that end, I am running for a position on the board.

 Thank you all,

 In regards to the Metlist.
I agree and have seen these predators on the Metlist waste no time for the
first opportunity to begin their IMCA belittling and bashing.Thankfully only
a few on there will praise this childish behavior. So to avoid feeding
opportunities like this to these individuals, choose your words very
carefully before you hit SEND. Ruin their moment of self glory.

  Hello Craig:

I will respond to your question and to Pete's question about why I
  (one of
the last two candidates to put out my statement) have not put out my
  statement yet.

My statement will be coming out soon, but I have held off for one
  important reason:

A question that was asked had to do with the IMCA's budget. While I
  have
my own personal opinions, I am also a member of the IMCA Board and we
  were
having discussions as to what we needed to say and the best method for
distributing this to the membership (and only the IMCA membership). My
official statement, now that the budget question has been addressed,
  will
come out later today or early tomorrow (Tucson time).

Now to address, in part, your question. As Elizabeth just posted on
  the
Metlist, what you have done (unintentionally) has been part of the
  problem
that we are facing. You wished to ask a question of the IMCA members,
  but
sent your question to the entire Metlist, probably getting to less
  than
half of the IMCA members! Discussions that should be occuring only
  among
IMCA members gets posted on the Metlist. When this happens, many IMCA
members are left out of the discussion and, unfortunately, people who
should not be involved in the discussions add their two cents (or
  more)
and things con then get out of hand. I think that if you were to look
  at
where the accusations that you refer to come from, they are not always
(and probably rarely) from IMCA members, but others who are on the
  Metlist.

This was one of the dilemmas the Board faced with respect to the
  Budget:
what is discussed on the IMCA list should stay on the IMCA list and
  has no
  business on the Metlist.

  Larry Lebofsky
IMCA #2151 and IMCA Board Member and candidate for re-election

   Hello List and candidates:
I have a statement/question for all the candidates...

As a newcommer to this forum, I was quite disheartened when all
   there was,
it seemed, was bickering and squabbling between members with a whole
   lot
of finger-pointing and acusations flying all around. People were
   calling
others cheats and liars, without full knowlege of the situations at
   hand,
and it was almost depressing. My question is...What would you do to
   try
and curb this nonsense, and to keep this forum on the right track?

Good luck to all the candidates, your responses will determine my
   votes.

   Cheers,
   Craig #6276

   Subject: [IMCA] Elections

Re: [meteorite-list] 25143 Itokawa and meteorites

2011-08-26 Thread Craig Moody

Hello list

I still agree with the theory that almost all of the asteroids in the belt,
were once part of a single planetoid, that was torn apart by the gravitational
tug of war between the Sun and Jupiter. Also, people assume that the asteroid
belt likes like the one from The Empire Strikes Back (Where Han Solo flies the
Millennium Falcon INTO an asteroid field with hundreds of them bouncing off
each other like a pinball game.) They are actually very far apart. Orbital
distance is maintained via speed and mass because (Insert scientific
techno-mumbo-jumbo here), so there's bound to be the occasional collision. It
could be violent or it could be like a gentle touch. What reaches us here on
earth, depends which piece of the pie got bumped our way this time.

Also, is it possible that a fall in 683BC could also have a sibling fall in
2011 with both pieces being ejected from the parent body during a violent
impact. One was travelling much slower than the other, and it took an extra
2694 years to get here. They would be identical (if it weren't for terrestrial
weathering).

Space has lots of really cool of things!..Because it's really, REALLY! BIG!!

have not heard of Itokowa suggested as source of anything, except the
Japanese did land something on it a while back and took some samples.
I would suggest ther source of LL's would MORE than likely be from Vesta, as
it seems that Vesta is the best candidate for a lot more as well.

Isn't this exciting news Al Martin!

  Al from wikipedia:
S-type asteroids are of a siliceous (stony) composition, hence the name.
Approximately 17% of asteroids are of this type, making it the second most
  common after the C-type.

  and from the Nature link:
S-types are commonly found on the inner fringes of the belt,

So it is not fair to call puny Itokawa even one of many parent body
asteroids; only that a reasonable composition match for LL chondrites was
found in what might be representative of its surface dust. The asteroid
is only 2 X 2 X 6 city blocks in size or so ... but interesting since its
orbit gets closer to our neighborhood.

There is a case for all Vestoids being from Vesta, but such a common
origin has not (yet?) been identified for S-type asteroids. With the
exception of Vesta, no asteroid parent bodies are suspected with any
certainty to be such grand-parent bodies. Grandparent, meaning it is
directly linked ... rather than one of a billion possibilities. It is
extremely unlike that all LL's are from Itokawa and probably unlikely
that *any* are from it as well.

Hey Mike. I think just to be safe you should request an International Money

 Hi List,

Quick question for the dealers : have you ever heard of a US bank
accepting a check from an overseas bank? Specifically, a check from
India from an Indian bank that is affiliated with Bank of America, and
the check in question will be drawn against Bank of America and can be
deposited or cashed at any Bank of America?

I ask because I received a request from an overseas customer and the
request seems legit in other respects, but I am reluctant to deal with
the kind of stuff where I have to walk in to the bank, speak to a
supervisor and get it handled - it's a PITA and I'd rather just go
through the drive-through and get my business done quick. And unless
this is some form of Cashier's Check, there is no telling how long it
will take for a check like this to clear and the funds to become
 available.

 Best regards,

 MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Mercury Fragments on earth (not)

2011-08-04 Thread Craig Moody

Hi Doug and list:

I read somewhere that Mercury was hit long ago by something big and powerful
enough to eject most of the planet's crust, leaving only the core. With an
impact of this magnitude, do you not think it is possible that some ejecta got
past venus and ended up on earth? The odds are about the same as having
material from one particular asteroid landing on earth. While on the Vesta
subject, how do the powers-that-be know for sure that material is from that
particular asteroid? I mean since there are tens of thousands of asteroids,
many of them are sure to be of the same mineral composition, especially if the
asteroid belt was once a larger planet that got pulled apart by the
gravitational forces of Jupiter and the sun. Who is to say that they have come
from the belt at all. Space is big, and there is a lot of stuff floating
around. Is it not possible that some meteoritic material could be from out of
our solar system? Things that make you go H.
Just my 2 cents worth :)

Subject: [meteorite-list] Mercury Fragments on earth (not)

 Dear List,

Mercury as a source for meteorites arriving on earth seems like the
most unlikely occurrence. I hope someone can point out where I am
wrong, since it would be wonderful to imagine the possibility that
material from the Swift Planet could every make the upstream trip here.
It is easy to think hey ... we have Lunar and Martian material here,
dream of Vestal material, so why no Mercury, Venus, etc... as if all
 were equally possible.

But they are not equally possible. Far, Far, Far from equally
possible. If things were equally possible all you would have to do is
ask two supermodels out on a date, and odds are one would accept,
right? - There are only 2 answers and *if we assume yes/no is a 50/50
proposition...* ? Hmmm ... a most unlikely occurrence and for most
not a 50/50 probability. Same goes for this present case.

The Moon is obviously within Earth's gravitational domination, so it is
natural that we would have a high possibility if material falling here
if it can escape the moon (escape velocity: 2.4 km/s), and Earth is the
 local drain for the moon.

Mars (escape velocity: 5.0 km/s) is upstream from the Sun to Earth so
it doesn't seem like any surprise that fragments ejected could find
 their way to Earth.

So why not a Jupiter meteorite? I don't think that is likely since
Jupiter (escape velocity on 'surface' 59.5 km/s) extremely greedy with
its material, requiring escape at five times faster than on Earth.

But what about Mercury. Mercury's escape velocity is 4.3 km/s. But
it's downstream from Earth and the Sun is a huge gravitational drain
plug that devours material. If you think Earth gets a piece of Mars,
imagine what the Sun gets from Mercury. To escape the Sun ... that is
to go upstream towards Earth, at Mercury, any fragment would have to
battle an escape velocity of 67.7 km/s. That's greater than Jupiter !
You might say ... ok, you don't have to actually escape the Sun, only
make it from Mercury to Earth. Well, at Earth, the escape velocity is
 42 km/s from the Sun. That's a loss of 25 km/s ... and don't forget
the extra 4.3 km/s to get away from Mercury as well ...

Their numbers are probably greater than summing them, but let's just do
that so it stays simple call it a minimum of 30 km/s imparted velocity
to tether that fragment of Mercury to Earth. What lucky rock ejected
by chance in the direction of Earth could handle that energy and board
 a greyhound (bus) to Earth?

It seems to me about as likely that we'd get a fragment from Jupiter's
surface if indeed there is a surface instead of a thick damping stew.
Once something (plasma?) gets ejected from Jupiter, though it is smooth
sailing to Earth if the direction happens to be right because the Sun
still sucks up anything not in a circular or ellipsoid orbit, like the
big drain hole that got the whole solar system moving to start with.
(Yes, everything orbits the Sun for pretty much the same reason the
water makes circles around the hole in toilet bowl on its way down).

So if by brute force, Mercury is unlikely to be a source of material,
how about by some other celestial mechanism? Something similar to
Jupiter's orbital resonances, perhaps? I don't think that is very
likely. Earth would be the Jupiter by mass, though Venus might be
argued. But Mercury is not the Swift Planet for nothing ... there is
no way orbital resonance could build up with Mercury constantly
 swinging by.

It gets rapidly less likely anything else might work ... like, how
about a hand-off from Mercury to Venus then to Earth. The energy is
still huge to get to Venus, but unless JPL tweaks a slingshot out of it
with the assistance of propulsion, I just don't see

I've been trying to contact Suzanne at Aerolite since Friday both by
email and phone. I've received no response so far via email and
everytime I call I just get Geoff's voice mail greeting and then I leave
 my message.

The office apparently hasn't been manned ( or womanned ;-) ) since
Thursday. Now when I call I get a message stating the voice mailbox is
 full!

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I was in the middle of a
transaction with Aerolite since early last week when I sent them a
package and all of the sudden there appears to be no one around.
The package has been waiting for them to pick up at the post office
since Thursday, but the post says it is still waiting for pickup.

 Thanks,
 Mal

 Hi all,

I just received this from Martin Zinn. Beware

 WARNING - FRAUD ALERT!

TO: Arizona Mineral Fossil Show Dealers
 FROM: The AMFS Staff

You may have received a similar message from us last week, referring
to the Colorado show, but we now have learned that the scams are
hitting Tucson dealers as well. Companies are getting dealer names
from directories and the website, and using them to attempt to sell to
 you.

SCAM #1 - You receive a call or email from a company implying that
they are calling from the hotel, and inform you that there has been a
rate change, or that you don't have a sleeping room reservation, and
they offer to book your room. If you provide the credit card that
they request, they bill for your stay immediately. Only problem is,
they have no connection with the hotel or show. They take your money,
and you may not get any room reserved, or at least not where you want
 it to be.
Reservations at the Hotel Tucson City Center may be made ONLY through
Martin Zinn Expositions. We have blocked the entire hotel.
Reservations at Quality Inn may be made through us or directly with
the hotel, and at Ramada Ltd. are made through the hotel. Do not
provide information to any outside agency!

SCAM #2 - You get a letter from a company called EXPO-GUIDE, that asks
you to confirm your free listing information. Read carefully, and you
will see that your free information can only be changed online. If
you fill out page 2 of the form, you agree, according to the last
paragraph on the page, to an advertising program that costs 1271 Euros
per year for the next three years!

Don't sign anything without reading it first. Our official show
directory is produced by XPoPress from Denver, Colorado, and they will
contact you for advertising in the AMFS Directory and the Tucson EZ
Guide. Be careful about any other company offering listings.

Re: [meteorite-list] Florida Fireball raises some hell

2011-07-27 Thread Craig Moody

If the witnesses claim they saw it hit the ocean, then would it have not have
fallen over the horizon? Since it was dark, and the dark flight would have been
darker. Would like to see footage though, I mean this is Florida and aren't
there security cameras avery 100 feet or so? Someone somewhere MUST have some
corroborating video footage, even if it was just a lens flare.
Regardless, it rests on the bottom of the ocean.
