Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim 2008!

2008-06-04 Thread Dave Schultz
Sadly I won`t be able to make it to Ensisheim this year. :( I will surely
miss all of the great times and experiences, but especially all of our friendly
European collectors and dealers who have always welcomed us with open arms.
Yes... especially my good friend Norbert Classen and his wife, who have
graciously put up with me these last two years for a couple of days at his
house. The cuckoo clock is still cu-ckooing! Have a good time everyone! Looking
forward to many pics and stories!

 To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com

Hi everyone, I will be attending the fantastic Ensisheim
meteorite show again this year, and the St Marie aux Mines
 mineral show the week after.
I look forward to a couple of weeks in France and Germany,
to escape the heat of Tucson! I will be displaying
meteorites with Moritz Karl in Ensisheim, and perhaps some
things with Hans in St Marie.
I will not bring much, as I am not all that excited to work
hard there, I prefer the eating and drinking part in France
 more than the working part:)
If there is anything specific that all of my European
customers want me to bring, please let me know now so that
 I can prepare the material.
See you all in France in two weeks. Those of you who have
never attended the Ensisheim show, you are really missing
out, if at all possible it is a fine trip to make, and not
all that expensive in that part of France. With Germany
only about a 10 minute drive and Switzerland about 40
minutes, there are endless things to do there.

Just wanted to thank this Wayner44 for using my

Re: [meteorite-list] Speck Issues - Reply to this subject

2008-03-03 Thread Dave Schultz
Hi Frank and all. This is a bit off the speck
subject a bit, but still applies to the theory of
breaking up specimens, that Frank and including myself
really hate to see. Recently I sold a beautiful full
slice of a meteorite on eBay, hoping to raise a little
money for Tucson, and also so that some collector
would enjoy it as much as I did, only to find out
later, that the winning bidder broke up that beautiful
slice into smaller pieces and was selling those on
eBay. This really bummed myself out and also another
collector who was thinking of bidding on it. I know
that this meant that more collectors could have a
piece of this meteorite, but some how just didn`t sit
right with me, and had I known that that was going to
happen, I wouldn`t have listed it at all, but I guess
that is the chance we all take when selling personal
collection pieces.
  Dave

 Hi Mike,

I don't disagree with you and I'd trust both Blaine
and you 100% to be selling what you say you are, but
unfortunately, not all dealers are the same. The
following is from another dealers site talking about
 a
0.62g, 0.60g and 1.12g thin part slices of Barbotan.
 he wrote:

NOTE: these are the prices ONLY until one sells.
 Then
there will be a 50% increase. When the
second one sells, the third will be broken up and
 the
price more than trippled. These are literally
irrepalcable. March2, 2008 a piece of this sold on
eBay for over $5,000.00 per gram. These are
 listed at bargain prices:

I have no question that these aren't Barbotan, just
hate seeing historical meteorites ending up as
 specks.
It is kind of ironic that he should say These
[pieces] are literally irreplacable and then
 proceed
 to pull out a hammer!

I think the biggest potential for fraud would be for
some non dealer on ebay selling (HYPOTHECIAL CASE):
Have to sell my 20mg fragment of Mokoia, purchased a
year ago from Mike Farmer, comes with his collection
 card.

 All the best,
 Frank

--- Michael Farmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Guys, there is no problem here. You know, as a
  dealer
who cuts and messes with thousands of meteorites
 per
year, you end up with plenty of crumbs, dust, and
specks. Please don't think that we are smashing
  these
things with hammers in order to maximize profit!
Specks are a byproduct of making a large piece
 into
multiple pieces, not taking a .2 gram meteorite
  piece
and turning it into 20 pieces, at least not on
  purpose.
As far as buying these specks on ebay, you must
  indeed
trust your dealer, someone like Blaine or myself,
 we
make enough money not to need to waste time
 scamming
people. If I say it is Mokoia, you can rest
 assured
that it is not Allende fragments. If you buy from
  just
anyone on ebay just because they say they have
  something, well, buyer beware.

   There
were a few who looked at the specks and balked
 but
   because it
was Blaine who was selling it, the pedigree was
   beyond reproach.

This is not meant to be an indictment of Blaine.

   Quite the opposite.

I understand the economic pressures of ever
  smaller
   pieces of
meteorite selling for ever higher prices, but it
   seems the price-to-weight
graph is almost U shaped, with more and more
   material ending up
   as smaller and smaller fragments.

I was just wondering if anyone in the US saw last
nights fly over of the space shuttle and the

This was the first time that I had ever experienced

  Dhofar
  908, displaying three distinct lithologies
 linking previous finds

That's why I called it a Rosetta stone. Back in
 2003 virtually
  nobody was
willing to believe that e.g. Dhofar 489, and
 Dhofar 305 did belong

BTW, as to my knowledge neither Adam nor I did
 use the Rosetta

 stone/fragment of Dhofar 908,

And, as for the monetary value of certain
 specimens: do you

specimen of, let's say normal Zagami will demand
 the same resale

specimen with dual lithologies, including the DML
 (dark mottled
  lithology)

 stay the same,
  but I fear
you won't get the latter one, cheap. And: if you
 know of a source

dual-lith Zagami at the price of normal Zagami,
 just give me a

[meteorite-list] Dhofar 908 3-lithology photo

2007-06-04 Thread Dave Schultz
Sorry to intrude on your discussion once again on
Dho 908 and also changing the subject a bit, but I
think one of my favorite lunar slices has to be NWA
that Norbert has on his web site. Seems to me
from my uneducated eye, that this particular lunar
slice has more than one lithologies, but I`m probably
wrong. Can we get an explanation on this one to extend
this fascinating subject a while longer and possibly a
photo for everyone to see?
  Dave

 Hi David, and All,

Stephan's photo shows another section through the 81
 main mass of Dhofar
908, and it's actually one of the very few pieces
 that has all three major
lithologies. The three lithologies are spatially
 separated in the main mass,
with one end consisting mostly of a clast poor,
 brownish IMB similar to
Dhofar 305, while the middle of the stone mainly
 consists of a clast rich
IMB with large anorthositic and other lithic
fragments as can be seen in the
lower part of my favourite slice, and which is
 similar to Dhofar 306, and
 other pairings:

 http://www.meteoris.de/img/ncc-lun/Dho908-2.54g.JPG

The upper, dark part seems to be a more mature
 regolith breccia, something
that is consistent with cosmogenic nuclides studies
 by Kuni Nishiizumi.
Speaking of that, this is a very old meteorite, and
 only one lunar meteorite
has a even higher terrestrial age, Dhofar 025
 pairings. According to Kuni
 Nishiizumi's studies, Dhofar 908 has a terrestrial
 age of approximately
350,000 years, placing its fall into lower
 palaeolithic times, and the reign
of Homo erectus rather than Homo sapiens.

Back to Stephan's slice: it has another special
feature to the lower right -
that large round redish clast seems to be a
 troctolite, and it's most
similar to large clasts in Dhofar 310. I won't call
 this a fourth lithology
because it's just a clast, but it's rather
 fascinating, though. Nice!

 All the best,
 Norbert

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson hotels

2007-01-08 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings. I have a room at The Red Roof Inn on West
Ina for $100.00 a night, very clean, and my car rental
is $150.00 for the four days that I will be in Tucson.
If you want a half way decent rate, you have to
reserve early. You can`t wait till the last minute and
you don`t have to reserve a room downtown. Very easy
commute from the outskirts around Tucson. Oh, by the
way... my airfare cost me $5.00! I used some of my
miles! ;)
Dave

 Hi All,

I'm afraid I have to concur with Adam and David on
 the Tucson
 hotel/motel situation. Something about paying
 Manhattan prices
for a roach and bed-bug infested room in an area you
 wouldn't
walk at night unarmed rubs me the wrong way. There
 are many
wonderful people that I would love to see there this
 year (and
perhaps I still will), but I won't support hotel
 piracy.

I see that a room at the Westward Look would run
 about $350
a night after fees and taxes. Split between two
 people, that's
a better deal than staying solo anywhere downtown.
 It's still
overpriced, but at least it's a nice place. --Rob

Re: [meteorite-list] Red Rain in India

2006-03-08 Thread Dave Schultz
Sounds like he just got finished watching Tom Cruise
in the new version of War of the Worlds. Maybe next,
there will be blood red roots growing everywhere!
 Dave

 Red rain from another planet?
 rediff.com
 March 08, 2006

On July 25, 2001, blood-red rain fell over Kerala.
 The unusual
phenomenon continued for two months, raining
 crimson, turning clothes
pink, burning leaves on trees. In some places, the
 rain fell in scarlet
 sheets.

Scientists were shocked, and the government ordered
 an investigation.
Scientists concluded that the rain was red because
 winds had swept up
dust from Arabia and dumped it on Kerala. But Dr
 Godfrey Louis, a Reader
in Physics at the School of Pure and Applied Physics
 at the Mahatma
Gandhi University in Kottayam, Kerala, was not
 convinced.

He diligently gathered rain samples and, after
 months of painstaking
research, concluded: 'The red particles, which
 caused the red rain of
 Kerala, are of extraterrestrial origin.'

His colleagues -- other scientists and physicists --
 frowned at the
conclusion. But Dr Louis stuck to his theory. His
 scientific conclusions
have now received international support. Dr Milton
 Wainwright of the
micro-biology Department at Sheffield University in
 Britain has been
examining some of the particles of the red rain
 samples that hit Kerala.
And he has come out in support of Dr Louis' theory
 that the rains could
belong to an alien life form.

I am indeed thrilled that my scientific conclusions
 have received
international support and recognition, Dr Louis
 told rediff.com New
Scientist Magazine, in its March cover story, has
 published the red rain
phenomenon along with the doctor's theory.

How did he come to this conclusion, we asked. Dr
 Louis says the
phenomenon first occurred at the place close to
 where he lives in
Kerala. The characteristics were very strange.
 Conventional
explanations appeared totally inadequate. I started
 an investigation
with limited resources and was greatly assisted by
 my research student A
 Santhosh Kumar, he says.

How did their investigations bring them to their
 interesting conclusion?
We arrived at it by analysing the various aspects
 associated with the
phenomenon, like the geographical and time
 distribution pattern, and the
nature of the particles, he says.

 These are the findings:

 * The phenomenon can be explained easily if it
 is assumed that the
origin of the red particles is from cometary
 fragments, which
   underwent atmospheric disintegration above
 Kerala.
 * There is additional correlating evidences that
 prompts this line
of thinking, like the sonic boom from the
 meteor airburst, which
preceded the first red rain case. Having made
 a logical
possibility like this, it follows that the
 cometary body in
question should contain a huge quantity of
 these red particles,
which amounts to an estimated quantity of more
 than 50,000 kg.
 * What makes this finding most important is the
 biological cell-like
nature of the particles. Under an optical
 microscope, they appear
   like biological cells. Transmission Electron
 Microscopy further
shows a clear cell structure (Image above).
 Their organic nature
is indicated by the major presence of carbon
 and oxygen. But,
   despite these biological indications, the
 cells do not show the
presence of DNA. The genetic molecule DNA is
 present in all living
organisms found on Earth, so the absence of
 DNA argues against the
   biological nature of these cells.
 * There is thus the possibility of alternate
 biomolecules in these
cells, whose origin is suspected as
 extraterrestrial. This way,
the cells may represent an alternate form of
 life from space. If
these are such biological cells, then their
 production in huge
quantity inside cometary bodies can be
 explained by the theory of
 cometary panspermia.

But, what if these new scientific ideas are wrong?
 Dr Louis says that,
if they are, he wants a better explanation for the
 phenomenon and the
strange nature of the cells. If these cells have a
 terrestrial origin,
then it follows that they exist in huge quantities
 in some part of the
Earth and are sure to have been noticed by some
 microbiologists. But
there appears to be no such identification so far,
 he says.

Dr Louis' theory was initially ridiculed, but has
 now been accepted for
research by international scientists like Dr
 Wainwright. His research
has also been accepted for publication in the
 reputed international
journal Astrophysics and Space Science. He is soon
 gearing up to publish
the next set of results and conduct several
 collaborative studies to
further unravel the mystery of the cells.

 all was well. Not true,
so two months later, Mr. Casper has sold my
material, and I have no payment.
Typical actions of a man who has destroyed every
 friendship he ever had, and
ripped off every dealer who ever sold to him.
This is why I posted this warning, just to remind
 people what is happening.
I note that Casper has meteorites for sale on eBay
 right now.
 Buy at your own risk..

Re: [meteorite-list] NPA 04-12-1929 Field Museum Shows Tilden, Illinois Meteorite

2005-03-28 Thread Dave Schultz
Looks like all the Field Museum has left is 1,139.00
grams and two thin sections. Does anyone have any of
this meteorite, and if so, can you post a picture of
it? Thanks! Oh, and thanks also Mark!

FIELD MUSEUM SHOWING BIG ILLINOIS METEORITE

CHICAGO, Ill., April 12 - (INS) - A piece of
 the only meteorite ever
recorded as having fallen in Illinois now is on
 display at the Field Museum
 of Natural History here.
For years astronomers and geologists have been
 watching for any report
of a meteorite falling of being discovered imbedded
 in the soil of the
state. The specimen now on display in the museum is
 a large fragment of a
meteorite which fell in Tilden, a town 45 miles
 southeast of St. Louis, Mo.,
on July 12, 1927. The meteorite landed in three
 masses - one weighing 110
pounds, one 45 pounds and one 9 pounds.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ibitira in thin section

2005-03-19 Thread Dave Schultz
I could use a few oohs and aahs in my life, so how
about a couple of pics!!! :)
  Dave

 Hello Listees, Listoids, List,

 The noncumulate, unbrecciated, monomict Ibitira
 eucrite with its
mm-sized gas holes or vesicles has always been on my
 wish list
(see O.R. Norton, p. 153 Cambridge Encyclopedia of
 Meteorites
for a breathtaking slice measuring about 10 by 10 cm
 in size).

So I was more than happy when Michael Cottingham
 offered a small
but very characteristic slice of 0.21 grams for sale
 some time ago
that I immediately purchased from him.

Not long ago, Michael Blood offered 3 Ibitira thin
 sections, one of
which I acquired, as this would be the ideal
 complement to my little
slice and it even looked so similar -- almost as if
 it had been cut
 from the same piece.

Today, when I looked at my Ibitira thin section
 under crossed polars and
with several different magnifications, there were
 many oohs and aahs
at the spectacular, colorful Ca-poor pyroxenes
 (pigeonite) most of which
are crossed by countless parallel, fine laths of
 Ca-rich augite (so-called
 exsolution lamellae).

The pyroxenes account for about 60% of my thin
 section, the second most
abundant phase is, of course, plagioclase
 (grayish-white because it is
chemically zoned). These plagioclase crystals show
 undulatory extinction
when you rotate the section under your microscope
 with polars crossed.

There are also several opaque inclusions throughout
 the section (they look
black both in transmitted light and under crossed
 polars). According to the
literature, they are ilmenite (CaTiO3), chromite
 (FeCr2O4), FeNi-metal and
 troilite.

Ibitira is also said to contain the silica polymorph
 tridymite (SiO2) but I
haven't been able to locate these laths yet as I've
 never looked for tridymite
before. These laths can be as long as 7 mm (in NWA
 1181) but are usually
 about 1 mm in length.

 Best Eucritic
 Wishes,

 Bernd

[meteorite-list] Venting.

2005-02-20 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings. This is something that has got under my
skin a bit this past week, and need to do a little
venting, even though it might bring some people down
on me. After being in Tucson at the show a couple of
weeks ago, and spending a bit of time in Bob Haag`s
room, and seeing the great sales that he offered to
people, including myself. I`m just amazed that these
same people are now turning around, selling thier
specimens that they got from Bob, and using HIS NAME
to make a profit from these purchases from him! I know
that this is probably just business, but seems a
little unethical to me. They are not bad people, but
just seem a bit too greedy! I know of a couple of
pieces that other collectors would have liked, but
were gone before they even had a chance at a great
deal, specimen and provinance! Hopefully this kind of
practice does not affect future deals from certain
individuals, and REAL collectors can benefit from the
these kinds of sales, and appreciate the specimen for
what it is, and not something to make money on.
There, that is all I have to say on that, and I WILL
NOT be selling the pieces that I got from Bob!
  Dave

2005-01-30 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings Michel. Sounds like you are having a good
time so far, but keep some of that champagne on ice
for awhile, as some of us meteorite nuts won`t arrive
till Thursday! see you then!
Dave

 Hello list;

Here is my second message about what's happening
 there. I discover the show
and it is great. Things are movin fast.

Amongst others, I had the visist of Ted Bunch and we
 discussed about my
Achondrite anom Sahara 03500 ( Tassa Mahchi on my
 web site) he agrees that
the metal globules are really big, probably the
bigger he ever seen, ( which
conforts me in the idea that this meteorite is
 really special, and for the
first time offered to the public in Tucson.), he
 thinks it is highly shocked
which we had also discovered. He is sceptical about
 the classification. I
will certainly ask for more analyses when I come
 back home.
I had a brillant evening with my friend John Kashuba

recover from the cold I caught on arrival.
My show room is now ready waiting for you visists. I
 display mainly main
masses and some big slices. I brought with me more
 than $ 100 000 of
material, 95 % of it being original and presented
for the first time on the
market, such as the Djermaia 1961 fall (Chad) , the
 Molay7 kg diogenite,
 Tassa Mahchi, and much more.

 I have still some champagne

[meteorite-list] Iron Meteorite on Mars (Color Photo)

2005-01-19 Thread Dave Schultz
Hello Ron. What a cool color picture that is. Is
there a possibility in the near future of a color
print being published that a person could purchase? I
for one would like to have one! Thanks for all the
info that you provide to us!
Dave

 Iron Meteorite on Mars
 January 19, 2005

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has found
 an iron meteorite on
Mars, the first meteorite of any type ever
 identified on another planet.
The pitted, basketball-size object is mostly made of
 iron and nickel.
Readings from spectrometers on the rover determined
 that composition.
Opportunity used its panoramic camera to take the
 images used in this
approximately true-color composite on the rover's
 339th martian day, or
sol (Jan. 6, 2005). This composite combines images
 taken through the
 panoramic camera's 600-nanometer (red),
 530-nanometer (green), and
 480-nanometer (blue) filters.

I was just wondering if anyone knows who found
Bluewing 001, an eucrite that was found in Pershing

and my prospects are probably slim and none, but it
doesn`t hurt to try. Thanks and hope everyone has a

[meteorite-list] Some Good News for a Change

2004-11-22 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings Adam and list members. I would like to ask
Adam and Greg if and when their awesome collection
will be made avaible online, so that all of us can
gaze at it? Looking forward to that day!!!
   Dave

 Dear List,

Sure, some are turned off by the efforts being made
 to restore collector
confidence, change is painful for some. Many
 believe the problem only
exists with NWA material, this is not true. The
 influx of material from NWA
has affected every sector of meteorite collecting
 including falls. I
recognize there are other factors involved as well.
 The good news is that
there are bargains to be found everywhere regardless
 of how you collect.
More good news is that the following steps are being
 taken to improve the
image and add professionalism to this awesome
 avocation:

It was decided that long-term steps should be taken
 in order to improve the
situation. The IMCA has evolved to Corporate status
 with a board of
directors that represent some of the most honest
 people you could hope to
 have represent this community.

Rules of conduct and a code of ethics are being
worked out as we speak with
 the input of nonbiased individuals.

Collectors and dealers are becoming more aware of
 the importance of
 documentation. The chain-of-custody of some
 material is being rightfully
questioned. This can only enhance the value of
 certain meteorites in the
 future.

The entire meteoritic community including collectors
 and dealers were
invited in by the Meteoritical Society to add input
 on the NomCom rules
regarding NWA nomenclature. This demonstrates that
 differing groups can
collaborate. If you did not take advantage of this
 you have no right to
complain about NomCom rules. I personally believe
the best that can be done
 has been done.

Two more laboratories are online that did not
 classify meteorites just five
years ago. As the cost of Microprobes comes down
expect a few more to come
onboard. Free classification services are starting
to go away so it is time
to take advantage of these services before more
 start charging, grant money
can longer be counted on to support some of these
 services and a new finance
model has been adopted by some laboratories.

As the material is starting to dry up from NWA,
 laboratory wait time has
been reduced to an average of six months, down from
over a year and a half
 in some cases.

Several exciting things are happening including some
 revamping of the
archaic classification systems that are now in
 place. O-isotope testing is
becoming an ever increasingly important tool in
 qualifying new meteorite
types and two new facilities are onboard and are
 excited to work with
 meteorites.

Meteoritics will move ahead, embrace the changes,

[meteorite-list] Vermillion (was Helt Township???)

2004-09-24 Thread Dave Schultz
The meteorite name was called Helt Township, and it
fell in the County of Vermillion in Indiana. There is
even a small book written on it. You can find it
listed on this website
http://igs.indiana.edu/geology/extraTerrestrial/meteorites/
index.cfm
It even has a picture of it with numbers. They look
like they could be R-9276. ??? I must find out more!!!
 :) Dave

   Hi list.
According to the same Catalogue that Sterling
 quoted, Marv Kilgore has the
main mass of the Vermillion (Kansas) pyroxene
 pallasite. But what I find
to be courious, is that there are larger masses in
 other collections.

And according to Dave Wier, Vermillion may be more
 confidently considered
to be genetically related to members of the low-Au
 division of the IAB
 iron-meteorite complex.

In any case, the name Vermillion is now taken. So
 even if the Indiana
Iron were recovered, it would have to get a
 different name.

AAH the keys: a little slice of paraidse , eh? you're
only supposed to go to the keys to LIVE- NOT to work!
still own property in big pine, butwould hate to have
to buy it now. keys are nice IF (and only if) you own
your own place free and clear- rent is ridiculously
high for what you get ($1,000 for a single-wide to
$2,600 for a 3/2 on a canal) and the average wage for
70% of the population of moroe county is
only$7.20/hr.. if you really want some fun, try to get
a building permit for that 100'x50' lot w/ no rogo
points you bought next door for only $50,000. blood
vessels will bust and hairs will grey and fall out
(trust me on this one).

meteorite hunting sux though. the life expectancy of
any meteorite in the keys (no matter what size) is
only 15 minutes!!! oh, the best bar in key west is the
parrot on whitehead and there is agreat bbq place next
to it called the Meteor smoke house! some of you
dealer types out there ougtta sell a big campo to 'em
for display as you walk in- would really fit in nicey
in the place. if the sale goes thru, send me a
half-dozen or so carte blanche freebie passes to the
place for a finder's fee so me and my friends can
stuff a gut and catch a buzz there on the house one
nite.

[meteorite-list] Tucson Auctions???

2003-12-09 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings. I know that this might be a little off
topic these days, but I was just wondering, with only
2 months to go till Tucson that I haven`t seen any
adds or anything anywhere else about Michael Blood`s
Auction or The Macovich [Darrly Pitt] Auction listed
anywhere? Shouldn`t we be seeing something really soon
about these and also if you possibly wanted to list
something in said auctions, would you contact them
directly? Thanks.

Re: [meteorite-list] Classic meteorites - my Top 10

2003-12-06 Thread Dave Schultz
Hey Norbert! You left out that Classic Indiana
meteorite LaFayette!!! ;)
  Dave

 Hi John, and List,

If you hadn't added the word classic I would have
placed the new lunar Dhofar 908 on nr. one, for
 obvious
reasons. Doesn't matter, there are also lots of
 great
classic meteorites, and here's my Top 10:

 1. Chassigny (martian dunite, and witnessed fall)
 2. Nakhla (martian clinopyroxenite, and witnessed
 fall)
 3. Shergotty (martian basalt, and witnessed fall)
 4. Calcalong Creek (the first non-Antarctic lunar)
 5. Ensisheim (yes, the only chondrite in my
 listing)
 6. Governador Valadares (nakhlite find from Brazil)
 7. Ibitira (vesicular eucrite fall from Brazil)
 8. Novo-Urei (the first ureilite - yum, yum ;-)
 9. Acapulco (now, that's a neat one, isn't it?)
 10. Aubres (another type specimen, and a real
 beauty)

I know that this list might not fit into your
 definition
of classic meteorites, but that's my take of it
 ;-)

 All the best,
 Norbert

[meteorite-list] Vesta meteorite???

2003-11-24 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings. While looking into some web sites on the
4 Vesta asteroid, I came across this site. If you
scroll down to the bottom of the page, they talk about
the Vesta Meteorite. Ok, I might be missing something
here, but I have never heard of the Vesta Meteorite,
or seen it listed anywhere. I collect mainly eucrites
now, so that is why I was looking up 4 Vesta sites.
Can anyone help me with this one, or have an idea of
the meteorite pictured? Thanks in advance!

2003-11-22 Thread Dave Schultz
I don`t think anyone would want to buy mine. I have
too many notes written in it. By the way, when does
the second edition come out? I really need a new one,
since my collecting direction has change, and need to
jot down some new notes!
   Another Dave.

 Dear List, and Friends;
There are just too many Dave's around here, sort
 of like the Michael's
 of the past.
Why would one want to sell the handiest reference
 book out there on
meteorites? And to part with a book that contains
 pictures of my most
precious (forgive me my other friends who have and
 do not have books
 out there) meteorite authors...

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteor Spotted Over Utah

2003-10-17 Thread Dave Schultz
This might be a bit premature, but currently I`m
checking out a possible fall here in Indiana. Someone
that I work with told me awhile back, that something
hit his cousins or brothers garage roof who lives out
in the country, but you know how that usually ends up
being. I keep telling him to bring it to me so that I
can check it out, but we have been really busy at
work. I`m not getting my hopes up, but sure would like
to see what ever it was. Tomorrow, Saturday is my one
day off, so I will try to get in touch with him and
see. I will post pictures if it might seem authentic.
Wish me luck!!!
Dave

Meteorite Spotted Over Salt Lake Valley
 ABC 4 News
 October 16, 2003

If you think you saw a UFO over the Salt Lake valley
Thursday morning, you may not have been too far off.

NORAD is saying they think the unidentified object
was a meteor but they have yet to confirm their
 findings.

ABC 4's Andrew Stack has been close on the tail of
this meteor all day and has more.

Thursday morning, a soldier on the firing range at
Camp Williams looked up to see a blinding flash, and
then a long con trail. It was a tail many others
 would
see over the next few minutes.

All of a sudden, my eyes saw something fantastic,
 describes one.

NORAD right now is researching all their records,
 explains another.

Around 10:30 Thursday morning, some caught a
glimpse of a bright, white light.

I thought, you know, I'm sitting out here taking
 UFO
pictures, says Brad Gygi, an eyewitness.

At the present time, they figure this is the high
 time of
the season for meteor showers and that's what one of
the suggestions has been, but right now, it is
undetermined to exactly what it is, says one.

First it flew over Camp Williams.

...saw an airplane going over and then he saw a
 white
trail that appeared to be coming from the south
 about
two o'clock and heading to the north at about eight
o'clock, describes LTC Rick West, Camp Williams
 Training Site.

Then it was seen over downtown Salt Lake.

It looked like it was heading for downtown
 Bountiful,
 says Richard Law, another eyewitness.

But it never made it that far.

Naturally, with the war going on, I thought, 'oh,
 oh,
what do we got here?' And then I recognized it
immediately as a comet or a meteor because of its
shape and the way it was going and then when it
exploded and just disappeared, I figured it just
 burned
 out in the atmoshpere.

I was lucky to get a couple that did turn out,
 says
 Gygi, of his pictures.

Brad Gygi was on his way to work and was lucky
enough to snap a few photos before 'it' exploded.

It looked really big, a lot bigger than when you
 see a
plane flying across or something and it was pretty
bright and it looked like a pretty long tail, says
 Gygi.

I just feel like anybody who didn't see it, missed
 out.
It was beautiful. It was just wonderful to see it.

The soldier who first saw this meteor reported it
through his chain of command because he feared the
meteor might hit one of the commuter flights
 preparing
to land at Salt Lake International.

As it turns out, air traffic controllers at Salt
 Lake
International took immediate action to ensure safety
as soon as they heard about this explosion in the
 sky.

They changed incoming landing approaches for a
couple of flights to avoid the area.

There were no close calls, all planes landed safely
 and
 everything shortly returned to normal.

[meteorite-list] Birthday Meteorites

2003-10-01 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings Listees. As I was just recently
communicating with a well respected list and lunar
meteorite collector, whose birthday was last week,
[happy belated birhtday Norbert Classen] we got on the
subject of birthday meteorites. He gave me a headsup
on one of the 3 falls that happened on my birthday of
June 2, listed on Sergey Vasiliev`s website. I
contacted him and now have a fine small specimen on
the way of Buschof L6 that fell June 2, 1863 in
Latvia. Now all I need are specimens of
Meester-Cornelis an H5 that fell in 1915 in Indonesia
and Utrecht an L6 that fell in 1843 in the
Netherlands. Can any list members know of anywhere
that I can get specimens of these two falls that I can
purchase? Thanks in advance and good luck in finding
your birhtday meteorites if you take on that
challenge.

Welcome aboard Christopher, and enjoy your
meteorites, this list and all of the interesting folks
we have here, and also, don`t forget about Tucson next
February!!! At least I think that`s when it will take
place. :)
 Dave

Whoo hoo! I finally made it on after many attempts!
I've been reading the archives and have been quite
 impressed with the list.

I am new to collecting, but have always been
interested in science and space. I was on the Board
of a local astronomy club a few years back (when we
had access to a 15 refractor--the largest such
scope in amateur hands) and even taught some
astronomy 101 classes. My collection is small but
growing. I have several micromounts, but a few
 larger pieces.

Thanks for having me and I promise I won't ask too
 many new guy questions ;-)

them about this. Like Frank said... DO NOT GIVE THEM
ANY INFORMATION! Good luck.

 Hi
I just recieved a letter from ebay suspending my
account. For a acution that I never listed ( item #
2184414322 ). I know others had problems. What
address can I send this email back to to see if it
is a scam. Believe it was for a Brenham meteorite,
according to the letter. I cant view the auction,
and sorry if anyone on this list bid. Thanks for the
 help.

[meteorite-list] Off topic possible eBay scam

2003-07-17 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings listees. Sorry for another off topic
subject, but I just received an apparent e-mail from
eBay [safeharbor] stating that I have had my rights to
eBay suspended for a violation of trying to log into
eBay using a bogus ID, which there was no way that I
did. I e-mailed eBay about this possible scam or
misunderstanding and await thier reply. Has anyone
else been banned lately by them or possibly been sent
a false e-mail from someone else masquerading as eBay
asking for your personal account information? Could
someone be trying to steal our accounts since that
eBay list was posted here? Maybe that wasn`t such a
good idea afterall!
  Thanks, Dave. [indy1996]

Re: [meteorite-list] PSEUDO DEALERS AND PSEUDO JUDGING

2003-07-03 Thread Dave Schultz
Greetings listees. There is no way that I even
consider myself being any kind of a dealer. I sell on
eBay so that I can make aome money to purchase my
collection pieces. At the moment I am selling off a
good portion of my Carbonaceous Chondrite collection
on eBay [hint-hint] so that I can purchase new
Eucrites, as this is the collection direction that I
am going towards now. Collector yes... dealer no! Have
a great 4th.!
Dave

 Dear List,

We consider ourselves collectors first not dealers.
 We have spent way more
than we have sold. I feel some of the
qualifications for a true dealer are:

Knowing what you are selling meaning having
 meteorites classified whenever
 possible
Possessing an excellent knowledge of the subject
 Having a long-term business plan
Standing behind what you are selling
Knowing what the market will bear (fair pricing) so
 that you will be around
 for awhile
Knowing the ratio between ordinary meteorites and
 rare ones and pricing
 accordingly
Preparing or having material prepared properly
 Depositing proper sized type specimens
 Promoting meteoritics
Donating material to non-profit organizations to
 further promote meteorites
 Protecting customers long-term interests by
 providing accurate TKWs
Working closely with the scientific community
Keeping track of your inventory meaning cataloging
 and labeling
 Above all being honest

I am sure a lot more can be added to this list.

 Best Wishes

 Adam
