Like many of us, I have always been a collector. Rocks, fossils and minerals
were my first passion, I had a passing interest in stamps/coins as an older
child and then as a teenager collected comic books and comic book art. This
was at a time when many new alternative comic books came onto the scene like
Cerebus, Mage, Elementals, and even Teen Age Ninja Mutant Turtles. As an
adult, my wife and I began collecting art and building on the pieces created
by my father who was a master jeweler, painter and sculptor. We have really
eclectic tastes but focused on paintings, glass art and sculpture with
styles ranged from Russian impressionism to Huichol Yarn paintings, abstract
paintings to many pieces we had commissioned ourselves.

Then in the summer of 2011, I watched "Meteorite Men" and went off the deep
end for meteorites. 4 years after buying my first Sikhote Alins from Geoff
Notkin in October 2011, I decided to become a full-time meteorite dealer as
well as a full-time high tech consultant (yes, when you work for yourself
you can pursue more than one vocation full time). If finances allowed, I
would have also collected old katana swords as the craftsmanship, beauty and
Samurai ethos has always fascinated me.

Thank you Edwin for invigorating the list with a REALLY on-topic topic!

Best,

Mendy

Hi E.T. and all,

Very interesting that you collect marbles; I do not have any marbles to
trade however find it very interesting that most meteorite collectors do
have separate very unrelated collections.

Along with collecting meteorites I am a music collector. This started back
in the 60's with records (vinyl) and then migrated into CD's. I still have
most of the original vinyl collection and still search for out of print CD's
along with new music to add to the collection. The collection is diverse in
types of music however mainly focuses on blues, classic rock and jazz.

There is a link between the collections; I listen to music while either
working on new specimens, cataloging new acquisitions or viewing thin
sections!!

Very interesting hearing from others on their "non-meteorite" collections.

Best Regards,
Bob Falls

Hello,

Currently, there are no entrance restrictions on the Santa Fe National Forest.
There are some roads that are closed but I don’t recall any near Glorieta.

>sites. It is the responsibility of the person using the metal detector to not

No permit or notification is required for collecting if the following applies:
• Collecting of samples is on the surface (no digging with hand tools
or mechanized equipment). A small sluice may be used.
• Collection is for personal use and esthetic values (cannot be sold or
bartered).
For the following activities, please contact the Santa Fe National Forest to
discuss permitting or authorization:
• Activity that does involve digging with hand tools or mechanized
earth-moving equipment, including bobcats, suction dredges, ‘high banking’ or
dry washing equipment.
• Commercial activities including collecting mineral or fossil
specimens for re-sale.
• Removal of more than insignificant amounts of landscape rock.
The following items may not be collected or removed by casual collectors:
• Vertebrate fossils (dinosaurs bones, fish, - anything with a
backbone), and shark teeth.
• Archeological resources
 including
any material remains of prehistoric or historic human life or activities, which
are at least 50 years old, and includes the physical site, location, or context
in which they are found including items such as old coins, metal implements, or
utensils. (36 CFR 261.2)
The collection of projectile points, pottery, or any other archeological
resource or artifact is not allowed (36 CFR 261.9 (h) without a permit.
Projectile points include ‘arrowheads’ and any prehistoric human-modified stone.

Some forest roads do travel through private land and the owner of the land can
lock the gate on the road at anytime. Going onto private property will need
authorization from the land owner before you enter their land.

Hope that helped.

Not sure what you read in the article but, I got that he thought the meteor
could
have been as big as 5 feet in diameter and was hoping that someone could find
a softball size sample. It is a wet and very wooded area with no roads. Oh,

[meteorite-list] Aztec, NM Meteorite questions

2016-03-21 Thread Dennis Miller via Meteorite-list
Hello, All! Living just 8 miles from Aztec, NM, thought that I might do a
little
fragment hunting. I have a few questions, though. First, I have read that
Harvey Nininger sent his wife, Addie, to Aztec to purchase the only stone.
Does anyone know who she purchased it from? Second, what was the
flight path? And finally, does anyone have a small piece for sale?
Thanks!
Dennis IMCA #1434
P.S. Also looking for a piece of Four Corners meteorite.

Below is an image of my wife admiring a famous and controversial 800 pound

documentary show dedicated a complete episode to the piece. I do not agree
with the show host's interpretations, felt the urge to rescue it from his
laboratory (studio) and purchased out from underneath them. Many of these
shows have no respect for such things and are more concerned with shamelessly
promoting themselves. I am onto a meteorite that weighs several times the

Subject: [meteorite-list] 10/04/14 AZ Fireball: Sextant-Compass readings of
 Belmont, AZ smoke tr ail
 From: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com

 Hello all,

I took a trip out to the Belmont, AZ Weather Service and stood in front of
the camera that took the photo of the smoke cloud 5 or 6 minutes after it had
ended. I had the photo in hand to estimate to the best of my ability as to
where the clouds were in the sky as related to Fremont Peak that morning.
These clouds might have dissipated somewhat and drifted slightly to the south
east 5 to 6 min after the fireball passed.

I spent over an hour taking readings with my WWII Bendix A-7 sextant, and two
WWI British prismatic compasses, averaging the readings of each.

(BTW: these compasses are top notch, so good that they were used by sailors
lost at sea to find destinations even without a sextant. The WWII Bendix A-7
is a fantastic sextant and very accurate as well)

Readings from the compasses: (Magnetic) 35 - 36 degrees Easterly direction.

Sextant, after estimating where the clouds were over Fremont Peak.

Top cloud (larger one): 13.0 degrees above horizon.

Bottom cloud (smaller one): 7.25 degrees above horizon.

Average between both as the two clouds are linked in a chain ~8.6 degrees
 above horizon.

The top cloud which is very dispersed after the six or so min after the
fireball end at 15:52:32 represents the start of the fireball, and from
reports it came in a a very steep angle ~45 degrees from the North East. This
fireball was observed from the Belmont location and others West of Flagstaff
including my all sky camera, as going DOWNWARD. If it rose up, or remained
stationary instead of downward as it did, then it would appear heading toward
and above the Belmont Weather station camera. In all sightings west of
Flagstaff it went DOWNWARD and to the East.

So the higher cloud appears higher in the sky due to the fact that the
luminous flight began at about 60 miles or so. The smaller more defined cloud
is the lower one to the ground maybe 15 to 20 miles above ground and closer
to the Belmont Weather camera than the more distant larger dispersed portion
 of the smoke cloud.

Do the trig. 13, 7.25 degrees above the horizon and an average between the
two above the horizon taking into account the downward angle of the Fireball
and the average assumed height between the beginning and the end of the event
between 60 and 15 miles above the ground.

The larger cloud is most likely over 120 miles away from the camera. The
lower one most likely over 70 miles away from the camera.

And the compass heading of 35-36 degrees is a magnetic heading, keeping in
mind the magnetic variation of 10.5 degrees to East of the the Celestial Pole
which is True North to which my all sky camera is aligned.

Draw your lines accordingly from the Belmont Weather Station at Navajo Army
Depot along that line of magnetic bearing 35-36 degrees average between the
two 35.5 degrees. If you transpose to a map that is aligned to the true
Celestial North, be sure to take into account the magnetic variation of 10.5
 degrees in drawing the line.

 Steve Schoner.

associated with it. I didn't say that,
the comment was ascribed in the article
 to Nicaraguan authorities, who, it
should be said, know nothing about
meteorites. Not saying that to insult
them; it is simply the case.

2014RC passed beneath the plane of the
 Earth's orbit:
 http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2014+RCorb=1
That alone makes any connection unlikely.

Unlike Carancas, which was a near-vertical
impact (70 to 80 degrees), this appears
to have been an impact from a lower angle,
perhaps 30-40 degrees or so. The crater
appears not to be perfectly circular but
to have a pushed-up back wall and to be
slightly eccentric (in the one photo).

We should wait for more evidence...

Actually, ANY evidence of an impacting
body is missing so far, other than the
likelihood that there must have been
one. If it had been an artillery shell
or bomb there would be metal fragments,
of course, but there doesn't seem to be.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] A Managua, Nicaragua meteorite?

Without ruling out that this is indeed a meteorite impact, I take the near
miss of asteroid 2014 RC rather as an argument against than for.
Given the news exposure that the asteroid has had, early investigators might
have jumped to conclusions. We should wait for more evidence.

The impact seems to have taken place about 13 hours before the closest
approach. That places it half a million km away or so. The link seems to
 be a stretch.

 Kevin, List,

It looks a great deal like the Carancas crater, although it's a little
smaller, about 80% of its size. The test would be:
 are there meteorites scattered about?
