[meteorite-list] Meteowrong anecdotes?
<< I was wondering, have any of you been approached with any really absurd meteowrongs? >> Just one or two! Here's my all time favourite meteowrong email.. "On Mar 5 1989 at 705 pm, I was tooling north on HWY 71 in Loisiana when i felt and heard a sharp snap that sounded like a bullet hitting. I got out of the car and looked for bullet holes but didn't see any. I continued, on the return i noticed one of my headlights was out. (It turned dark) In the am i began replacing the headlight when i found the hole i had missed the last night but the angle didn't look right. i stuck a 1/2 " dowel in the hole and figured it had entered at about 5 degrees east and 10 degrees north. I removed the headlight and found this little critter inside. The object had pierced the headlight, bounced off the frame of the car and ended up inside the headlight. I immediately suspected islamic terrorists, of course. (i was way ahead of the curve on this, i spent time in the middle east) being forced to abandon this theory (it required a muslem shooting a rock gun from a heilocopter) i concluded that it was a meteorite. had i been in a little more of a hurry it would have entered at my clavicle and exited at my ...well never mind. the picture is poor, it feels like it's made of metal and has little pits in it. it's about 5/8". i was hoping someone could tell me what it is. i keep it to remind me of the fickle finger of fate. i found (on the web) some nickle iron ones that look like it, course i found some nickle iron ones that didn't." -- Can anyone beat that?? I doubt that anybody would offer that now but I wonder if anybody knows if the guy ever sold his meteorite and if so what he got for it? Curius minds are just wondering Cheers DEAN Yep and I'd have paid it happily, but he (Noe Garza) already had a tentative offer of $50,000 for the "Garza Stone", so my $30k offer fell flat. However, I did purchase some other nice pieces from Noe, including the 178g end piece which broke off the mass when it hit the wooden joist in the attic, and made the second hole in the ceiling plaster. Oddly, this 178g piece bounced around inside the bedroom and then flew right out of the window before being picked up on the patio. Other souvenirs that came home with me were the wooden joist - smashed into 4 or 5 pieces but which still assembles beautifully - and the punched-out ceiling plaster discs from the holes. One of the coolest fragments from the Garza Stone is a small end piece with ceiling plaster and window sill paint over the fusion crust. Gregory Wilson is now the proud owner of this piece, and I'm sure he'll post some pictures of it later. His request was not based on the fact that the specimen was damaged or otherwise in a different condition than described when it was sold to him. The request he felt was justified because he thinks the specimen is now not worth as much as he paid for it bach then. This story sounds very familiar to me. A couple of years ago, I shipped a meteorite to a buyer and agreed to accept payment in 4 monthly installments. The first 3 installments arrived on schedule, but the 4th and final payment was witheld. There was no explanation giventhe payment just wasn't sent to me. Being a trusting soul, I let it go for several more weeks before emailing a polite reminder, enquiring about this "missing" payment. The buyer emailed me back and stated that final payment would not be made, as the price of that particular meteorite had fallen over the last few months. !?!?! Hi everyone, I received the following email today from the stone mason (and Edward Topham expert) who was charged with renovating the Wold Cottage meteorite monument during it's 200th anniversary year in 1999. The 1795 Wold Cottage fall was one of the most important falls in meteoritics (as far as gaining general acceptance of rocks which fall out of the skies is concerned), so I thought you might like to read his email below. By the way, the web page he's referring to is at http://fernlea.tripod.com/woldcottage.html - "hi, i have just come across your web site featured in the Sunday Times newspaper today , i was amazed to find myself on the page about ;topham's coloum; i recarved the inscription during the wetest june since 1795, the monument faces the direction from which the wold cottage metetorite came, unfortunatley this is also the wrong direction for the wind and weather which continues to batter the exposed monument. mrs grey and i were the subject of a television programme last year. thank you for showing the card ,i didn;t know my work was on the net. regards and thanks for a pleasant suprise. i have given a slide show lecture on topham and his life and times inc. the meteorite , and monument for about ten years now, if you look at the card i painted you will see a dog [greyhound] in the picture with a halo, topham bred the best greyhound in british hunting history too. i have researched topham;s life and times and written many articles on him and the meteorite, i have held it in my hands at the bi- centenary event. cheers and thanks for the 15 mins of fame. david mooney. [meteorite-list] Sounds of the Bovedy fall
Hi List, when I returned from the States on Thursday evening, there was a package waiting for me containing an audio tape of the Bovedy meteorite fall. It's pretty cool, so I thought you might want to hear it for yourselves. It was recorded on 25th April 1969, in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland - a woman was recording bird song just as the 5.4kg Bovedy (L3) meteorite fell, and she caught the detonations through her microphone. The booms and rumblings echo around for several seconds after the first detonation, and a spooked dog starts to bark soon after (the Bovedy Dog??). The fun starts at around 34 seconds into the track, which you can download at http://fernlea.tripod.com/bovedy.wav It's always nice to see what caused it, so here's a picture of my Bovedy slice http://fernlea.tripod.com/bovedy.jpg Thanks to Derek Heatly and the Planetarium for the original recording! Re: [meteorite-list] The big questions?
In a message dated 01/09/02 15:08:02 GMT Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: In regards to making a sale...what is the proper (or recommended) protocol for sending identification with the reselling of a given piece?. If John Doe buys from Dealer A who has a reputable history and provides a card saying Dealer A's Meteorites or from the Collection of Dealer A, what has more meaning: to resale with a new card from John Doe's Meteorites, or to provide the old card from the long standing Dealer A? John, I don't think there's any set protocol, but for me it's always cool to receive the whole sequence of past & present dealer labels/certificates with a meteorite when it's purchased. I certainly don't have a problem with my certs being passed on, so long as the specimen is exactly as originally supplied. It could become a bit misleading if the specimen has since been cut or broken up, and the weight & description no longer matches the certificate. I've kept many dealer labels over the years, including those that have some odd spelling mistakes and typos (what's a "chrondule"?, and when did "Lake Tagish" fall??), but like postage stamps with printing errors, these will be worth a small fortune in years to come ;-) << Or, is it up to the new dealer/resaler John Doe to stand up and say it is what it is, or should he wait some period of time to do that until he gains trust in the collectors? I've seen it both ways, but for new guys guys like Shaun and I, "what is the recommended practice?" >> Just go for it! :-) Most everyone had to start right at the bottom of the ladder originally though, and then build up a reputation over time.I don't think there's any quick shortcut (sadly, as someone found out recently), but start as you mean to go on and include your own label/cert with all of your sales, giving lots of info about the specimen itself and fall/find etc. details. However, unclassified NWA's should always be accompanied by a completely blank piece of paper ;-) (just kidding Dean!) I guess that certificates and labels that declare authenticity probably don't prove very much at the end of the day, but it's interesting to note how quickly I receive an email reminder from the customer if I forget to send a signed certificate out with the meteorite. Re: [meteorite-list] The big questions?
In a message dated 30/08/02 17:54:06 GMT Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What it comes down to is this, how can anyone that can't study these rocks know for sure what they are. Say I purchased two different H4 meteorites and both look alike in most respects. How can anyone know its not the same stone with a different name pinned on it. Hi Shaun and all. I don't think anyone replied to Shaun's questions, so I'll have a stab at answering them. Regarding two different H4's that look the same visually, and how to tell that they're not from the same stone, the short answer to this is.you can't!...at least, not easily! With a bit of collecting/dealing experience, you can get a "feel" for some named meteorites and know what to expect them to look like, but that's VERY far from being conclusive and not much better than an educated guess. Even electron microprobe and petrologic microscope might not be able to duplicate the original analysis exactly, and tell with 100% certainty, precisely which named fall or find is under study. When buying meteorites, anyone should ask themselves how much faith they have in a dealer/seller, or ask other collectors for their opinions about them. Crap and bogus sellers don't tend to last very long in this game luckily, so anyone should be able to find out quite easily who to avoid. Major dealers often trade meteorites with museums & institutions, and when a trade completes there's a certain amount of documentation involved. Other times, deals might be closed with professional meteoriticists, but there's usually full TRACEABILITY in one form or another. Personally speaking, I don't (and won't!) start pulling out past trade documentation from the filing cabinet and wave them about just to prove something to a cautious buyer in order to close a sale, but I have them here safely. << How can I assure anyone who buys my product that this is the genuine article.>> It can take time - especially if this is the first time the buyer has ever considered buying a meteorite before, and perhaps only then because they chanced upon your website late one night while playing around with the search engines. Anyone with any common sense would surely find out a bit more about meteorites before parting with hard cash, but they will probably look to you as the expert and fire a load of questions at you. Don't blind them with science and talk of chondrules or stuff like that (not yet! ;-) )..if they are genuinely interested, pictures are probably the best place for them to start learning. Maybe tell them to look in their family encyclopaedia under "meteorites" and to check out the pictures of etched iron meteorites and cut stones. I have an old set of encylopaedias here that are almost as old as I am (41), but they have pages and pages of meteorite info & pictures which clearly match many iron & stony meteorites on the market todaysometimes, they ARE the actual meteorites on the market today!! Failing that, library books, the internet etc. Just don't give them the hard-sell routine, as it rarely works anyway. << you have to admitt, this is a funny market on meteorites. >> That's for sure! Some people I've met over the years are beyond convincing and will never fully believe that these chunks of stone & iron are genuine meteorites, no matter what I tell them. To some, it's all seems far too unlikely that private individuals can ever own a meteorite. Books help, especially those with pictures that clearly match up with the space rock you're holding in your hand alongside the page. Arm yourself with Richard Norton's new "Rocks from Space" and then let people make up their own minds during your next "show and tell" session :-) Cheers, Rob. www.meteorites.uk.com Fernlea Meteorites, The Wynd, Off Dickson Lane, Milton of Balgonie, Fife. It depends on the size of the business - buying power, turnover, profit margins, quantities involved, etc. We play DHL off against Fed-Ex, and the carrier which gives us the best rate wins our business. They wouldn't be interested in discussing discounts for small quantities of 10 per month, but if you tempt them with a carrot of 80+ per month, they'll do their best to beat their rivals' shipping quotations. We ship a lot of packages overseas and have been for something like 14 years. How about "it is more likely to have been thrown by a boy from the other side of the building?" Perhaps it is real, but I think not! Remember the lady who 'found' ( the bolide so many saw) in her garden? Not a meteorite! We get 2 or 3 of these kind of meteorite stories in the British press each year. The newspapers like to sensationalise the story and astound their readers with "facts" that might only really be heresay, guesses or just slim possibilities at the time it's reported. The funny thing is, there are rarely/never follow-up articles, saying that little Jimmy's space rock was actually just a piece of roofing tile that got blown off the top of a nearby house, just as he happened to be walking underneath it. I guess follow-ups like that don't sell many papers! I remember reading a story that appeared in all of the British national newspapers about 3 years ago, where a guy had found a "meteorite" while out walking his dog. I spoke with him on the phone and he told me that he was a physicist, and tests in the lab (his own tests, in his own lab) showed that the "meteorite" had huge chunks of diamond inside the stone, some approaching 1cm in size. He'd never seen a meteorite before but that didn't matter, so he called all the newspapers. They believed him because of his credentials, and before we knew what was happening, it was declared in the press as a new meteoriteno doubt about it whatsoever! Needless to say, it wasn't. Before then, I'd spent 2 weeks looking for it by digging numerous test holes without success. [meteorite-list] Dalgaranga Mesosiderite
Hi folks, during my meteorite travels in Chicago last week, I picked up a great looking Australian mesosiderite individual named Dalgaranga, and was reliably informed by the curator that "this is the only metallic specimen of Dalgaranga in existence", with all the remaining 10kg being shale and completely oxidised mesosiderite. If that's the case, I'm well pleased to be the present owner, but does anyone know if that's so, or of any other metallic Dalgaranga specimens out there? I've linked through to some pictures below that I thought you might like to see. It's an oriented specimen with fine flow lines over the "dome"...the rollover lip is just about there, but has suffered from weathering somewhat. The backside obviously once contained silicate inclusions, but these have either weathered out to leave pockets, or simply didn't survive being torn off the larger mass in flight. David Weir suggested to me that this mostly iron individual was once a metallic nodule, ripped away from it's surrounding stony matrix in flight, and it's certainly looking that way. I ground a small corner this afternoon and etched the polished face to reveal a very fine Widmanstatten pattern, similar to the figures which appear on the metal blebs in my Estherville slice, plus a couple of tiny silicate inclusions. Here's the pictures.enjoy! :-) http://fernlea.tripod.com/dalgaranga1.jpg http://fernlea.tripod.com/dalgaranga2.jpg http://fernlea.tripod.com/dalgaranga3.jpg http://fernlea.tripod.com/dalgaranga4.jpg By the way, I loved Chicago and even managed to catch a Cubs game at Wrigley FieldI made it as far as the 7th Innings Stretch, but didn't know the lyrics to "take me out to the ball game", much to everyone's relief! [meteorite-list] LLoyd's auction
Hi folks. LLoyd's in London ran a large auction today, featuring a hotch-potch of antique furniture, paintings, weird arty stuff and also a couple of large iron meteorites, all on behalf of "the British government". Did any other Listees get involved in bidding in person or on the telephone? There was a lot of publicity and advertising beforehand, so I'm just curious. LLoyd's sent me a picture of each iron several weeks ago, showing a 7.5kg and a 50.8kg individual that they'd had sampled and authenticated at the NHM, London prior to auctioning. The pictures weren't great, with the smaller 7.5kg individual looking not much better than a dark metallic blob. [meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall
Hi folks, I received several individuals and fragments of the new Moroccan fall this afternoon, and couldn't resist quickly grinding a face onto one of the pieces and having a peek inside. This one fell at 16:17 GMT on 11th February.just about the same time that many of us were gathering for the start of Daryll Pitt's meteorite auction in Tucson. Kinda weird timing, don't you think?? It's a very fragile, almost crumbly meteorite that doesn't take a polish at all, so you might have to concentrate hard when looking at the picture I've posted here http://fernlea.tripod.com/newfall.html My largest individual is just over 200g and there are many dinky little, perfectly fusion crusted individuals that resememble the Holbrook & Pultusk "peas". The matrix had a much higher contrast when it was still wet with alcohol coolant, but it looks very much blander when dry and it can be difficult to see the small brecciation. I think LL6 is a pretty safe bet on this one, but we'll see. Cheers, Rob. http://fernlea.tripod.com/forsale.html Fernlea Meteorites, The Wynd, Off Dickson Lane, Milton of Balgonie, Fife. [meteorite-list] (no subject)
Hi folks, I quite often receive emails and phone calls from people who are looking to buy a one-off meteorite for reasons other than building up a collection. Some of the proposed uses have been pretty weird and often unworkable, but the one that sticks in my mind the most was about 3 years ago from a lady in England you wanted to buy "a meteoriteany kind of small meteorite that I can heat up in a flame and use to burn through paper". I had to find out more, so I asked her what her plans were. Apparently, she wanted to take a map of London, heat up a small iron meteorite and place it on the site of London's Millenium Dome. I asked her if she was an artist and expected some kind of artistic reply, but she just said "Nope..I just don't like the Millenium Dome and it's concept". Oky!!! I made a small sale and that was the end of it I thought. Until I saw this... http://www.multiplestore.org/docs/parker.html It sounds crazy, but I notice that the "limited edition" has all sold out, and if the price of the meteorite map on eBay is anything to go by, she's done pretty well too. In fact, the meteorites are double bagged and clearly were vacuum-packed like ground coffee. Has anyone seen this before? I'm just curious now about the process and who might be doing it. >> That might be me. I ship most specimens in a clear plastic bag that's heat sealed at both ends to ensure an airtight seal, often with a pouch of fresh dessicant. Sometimes, the air is removed before sealing, giving a shrink-wrapped effect. The bags arrive as a 50 metre flat tubing - we cut it to the right length, then use a heat sealing machine to perfectly seal a strip at both ends. << I was going to sell the little campos for a couple of dollars each in the gift shop of my observatory, but the bag looks so nifty I may not have the heart to open it up! >> I only intend the heat sealed bags/vacuum packing to keep everything fresh during transit really, as the packing isn't always very pleasing to the eye. I don't remember preparing any Campo's this way though, at least not recently. [meteorite-list] The "Lost" English Meteorite
Hi folks, I realise that this is a long-shot and probably a wild goose chase, but here goes anyway.. During the late 70's, a large nightime fireball was witnessed by many people over London, England. I saw it myself and it was every bit as spectacular as the Peekskill fireball, only much shorter in duration..it was breaking up during flight with several smaller fireballs lagging behind the larger fragment. The next day, a science teacher at a local high school in Sutton, who had also seen it, gave his class a lecture on meteorites and asked for more eye witness accounts to be passed to him. It was also mentioned in the newspapers, then quickly forgotten. This was all a very long time ago, but it's still the best fireball I've ever seen and very fresh in my mind. List member Geoff Notkin lived only a few miles from my home back in those days, so perhaps you remember reading about it Geoff? Last year, I was chatting with a British mineral dealer who told me about a meteorite that he'd purchased from a finder in England ~20 years ago. At first, I reckoned on it being another fragment of the Barwell fall, but soon realised that it was something completely different. The mineral dealer had been approached by guy in England who had found a rock lodged in his roof space during recent repairs. Three or four years earlier, he and his family had been startled by a loud "thud" on the roof of their house during the night, but could not account for it afterwards. A corner was ground off the stone to reveal metal flake and chondrules..the mineral dealer bought it from the finder on the spot, then sold it to a collector in America. Although the dealer was primarily involved in selling minerals, he was also experienced in meteorites and swears that the stone was meteoric, fusion crusted and chondritic in nature. Sadly, he no longer remembers who actually bought the stone from him. *&^%$"@!!! Whether or not this meteorite is linked to the fireball witnessed by myself and many others during the late 70's is pure speculation, but there's little doubt that there WAS a fall onto a house in England around the same time, which has so far gone unrecognised. As far as I'm aware, the stone has never been formally classifiedif it has been, it's certainly never been submitted to the Meteoritical Society and probably still remains in someone's meteorite/mineral collection in the USA. I've kept some of the finer details back (names, places, times, circumstances etc.) for purposes of authentication, in case this stone ever surfaces again in the future. If you think it strange how a meteorite can lodge itself within a roof without being noticed or cause any leaks over 3 years, there's good reason for that too! We know when and where it fell, how it impacted, and the somewhat unusual circumstances surrounding it's recovery, as well as the weight of the stone itself. If anyone feels that they may have it in their collection or knows who might, please feel free to fill in the blanks and let me know. There's also a $20K incentive on offer to the mystery owner, should he wish to sell it to me :-) Cheers, Rob Elliott. http://fernlea.tripod.com/forsale.html Fernlea Meteorites, The Wynd, Off Dickson Lane, Milton of Balgonie, Fife.
