Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 5000 Display at Yale Peabody & Replica News
I never said the IMCA was bad, there are many great people that make it up. That said dealers running a collectors group is highly conflicting when the dealers can band together and eject members (who also sell) for things that others do - at least one being a board member... Perhaps dirk Ross care to comment on just how many times and how many members asked about IMCA budget info... I was far from the only one just I was the most vocal when I ran for the board - and had more then a couple votes... Old news though, right? I never planned on these castings to be placed in public hands. He has now committed libel among other previous offenses with the falsehoods he posted last night. People need to respect others intellectual, copyrighted and artistic works. This is not about shameless self-promotion on my part. I did not chase the press at its inaugural public viewing at the Royal Ontario Museum, was not present and paid to have the classifying scientist represent NWA 5000 at the event. There is only a single image of myself on the official NWA 5000 website buried deep at the back end. I have avoided making the story about myself since I will, more than likely, only be a footnote in its long-term history anyway. It has always been about the stone in my case. Now the curator has the audacity to introduce themselves and the museum to the World by throwing attacks and insults. Two strikes already on the museum and the management. I can tell you one thing Greg Hupe is the most honorable, honest hard working person I ever had the pleasure of knowing in the world of meteorites. His hard work, efforts and accomplishments have inspired my passion for meteorites. As far as I know this is a time for celebration, when a meteorite goes on display in Yale University, everyone of us should be excited. We can all share in the excitement of this wonderful achievement. Those of us who decide to put ego and jealousy first, shame on you. This shows who you really are and your true intentions. Some people only care about the money they can take from meteorites and all they work on is shameless self promotions that don't put science first. You are the people who cause the problems in the World and with meteorites too, your attitudes suck. Greg's achievements with NWA 5000 and the others during the last 20 years are like a beacon in the darkness, his accomplishments working with scientists, museums and universities are in start contrast to the accusations coming from people who sell their meteorites in auction houses and are involved in scandals. [meteorite-list] Wandering Star Meteorites... IS BACK.
Hi to all, as I said in my previous AD, Life happens and the past 2 years have been a test and a rough road for me personally... but its a test I will/have passed. I am happy to announce that even after someone attempted to hack my account and take my website... www.wanderingstarmeteorites.com is BACK. Thanks to all who have been understanding in delays, both shipping and service delays. In major part, its been due to a divorce, custody battle, fight for legal ownership of my house and personal issues of that nature. At one point, I had my meteorite inventory in 3 different states... I dropped the ball with my business some because too much of my focus was on things mentioned above. While we are still in the rebuilding process, new items, new pages and more information and meteorites for sale are happening every day, sometimes several times an hour. If you EVER wanted to OWN something from outer space, I can make that happen. For our USA customers we are now using USPS priority mail 2nd day for $6.00 and ship within 24 business hours of payment. Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Meteorite May Fetch $160,000 At Auction
I dont disagree, lunar is my favorite but it makes me question... why has Lunar meteorite value decreased from $25,000 a gram to $400 a gram or less - in some cases as low as $200 a gram for one certain lunar meteorite? Thats a loss in value of $24,600 or more in 14 years on lunar while Martian has increased. Perhaps Martian samples are on the way to becoming the new king? Re: [meteorite-list] IMCA Money Matters & my resignation
Thats sad to hear Mike. I contributed to help the Footes with my donation of Carancas hammer items (the only ones in my collection) and really hope the full amount was given to them. I am happy more are starting to go public with this info. I think it needs to be made known that there are problems internally at the IMCA for changes to be made to make the group what it could and should be. 2 years ago there was Berduc being sold from IMCA members at Tucson also. A few of them... Dave and I talked about it when we saw it. I harmed and hurt a friendship with a very nice person by mentioning it to the IMCA, One of the few things I really regret that happened and I am very fortunate I was forgiven by him for it.Thank you again for your forgiveness, you know who you are. Don't you trust us? UNQUOTE When information like this is withheld, it is easy to lose your trust. 1- Addendum - Shortly before the Tucson Show I was informed of actions which, if true, confirm and exceed my worst misgivings about the financial behavior of the IMCA: I contacted Gary Foote and his wife, CJ to see if they had received the funds generated by the auctioning of a Jerry Armstrong painting. CJ told me how grateful she was for all the financial help the meteorite community had given them and that the buyer of the Jerry Armstrong painting paid them directly (they also received other money from the IMCA and from individuals who were made aware of their peril by the IMCA). While expressing overwhelming and sincere gratitude to Those who had sent money, she told me that the IMCA treasurer had later contacted her and asked her to return half the money the IMCA had generated for them, stating only, "Other people are in need." The timing was the worst possible as CJ had just been told by his doctors that Gary's life was hanging by a thread and she could loose him at any moment. She reports she told the IMCA treasurer that every cent had gone to medical costs and basic survival needs. She was then asked for a written accounting of how all money she received was spent. CJ told me that at that point her emotional state and the circumstances of life and death they were facing, hardly allowed for such an accounting and the conversation was terminated. When this was happening, I was still a member. As a member, money for Gary and his wife had been solicited by the IMCA. The request by the treasurer of the IMCA that half that money be returned clearly constitutes a betrayal of all who donated to that cause, not to mention the trauma to The Footes. I certainly feel betrayed. It is hard to believe any of the members of the IMCA who donated to this cause would find this acceptable. 2- The IMCA has involved itself in disputes between dealers. Several dealers have chosen to resign rather than have the IMCA used to leveraged in their personal transactions with other dealers. This was a major factor for me, but definitely far from the only factor in my Resigning. 3- The IMCA has recently taken it upon themselves to condemn people dealing in meteorites from countries that prohibit exportation - in spite of the fact that I have been told by several people I trust that one prominent Board Member was openly offering Burduc at the Tucson Show and another had been personally involved in exporting Burduc. 4- When someone does resign, the remaining dealer is free to state their position and make any accusations they please. The resigned dealer is not even allowed to know what was said about him. (I was told by a good friend it is against the rules to foreword any IMCA post to a non-member). I know of several dealers who have been ejected or resigned rather than be subjected to the hypocrisy of IMCA power brokers - and all but one were over issues NOT having anything to do with authenticity. 5- I recommended Michael Gilmer for membership as he is a fine, open hearted & genuinely good guy - The IMCA refused to accept Michael Gilmer as a member though he had done nothing wrong, stating he, QUOTE: "has not been around long enough." Is there a defined waiting period for acceptance? I doubt that if he was a collector and n
Re: [meteorite-list] International Laws related to meteorites link - good info
Jason, I was "going after" the IMCA while I was still a member and was running for a spot on the board two elections ago. This is all in the archives unless the purged it to cover up the activities they are doing. They still wont account for where all the money they get in member dues has went, why the non profit status was revoked in 2008, who Daniel K. Cathcart is (the one time owner) Anyone know him? Who the current owner is (Adam Hupe?) how and why he came to own it... As a member of the IMCA, I lost a lot of faith in the group for the lack of answers to questions many had. Not just me. I was just the most outspoken about it. I even went to say that if I was not elected, I would be kicked out of the group within months for what I was pressing them to answer and the fact they would not. I and MANY other members asked for budget info for years. They would NOT release it. They wont say who and how many members are free (Bribed?) to be members... They are silent just like on this. Legal status of meteorites and import export goees to the heart of the IMCA code of ethics yet they do nothing about it to help the community. This is not me being mad about not being a member or even your stupid blacklist site you have. Its about honesty of the group who is supposed to (or should be) the go to for real meteorite info and authenticity. The IMCA is useless unless you want the logo to sell meteorites under some false and half hearted rules and ethics. When Mike Blood offered to buy the entire board Robert rules, they said no! Why? That is a great resource they choose not to accept his kind offer. Please dont get me wrong, there are some great people in the IMCA and even the board has a few good ones, but not many who are in actual control. Its a marketing gimmick. Thats it. The IMCA could be great, but they are not currently effective in pretty much anything. The official reason I am not a member is because I tried to export a buzzard coulee prior to me getting the permit. (which I did get) and the reason I wanted it was to have a very fresh sample to provide to a friend for study and thin sectioning... I did not want to wait several months for it and who knows what contamination to occur... NO OTHER REASON. I have the emails from the IMCA board showing this and will provide them to ANYONE who wants to see. Anyone who says different, please speak up now. I could go on, but I will wait to see if anything I said here is addressed... likely will be silent as usual and try to sweep these things under the rug. So again, please IMCA board, owner, president, vice president? Any want to answer the questions above? At the time, India was the property of the crown, and Britain has never had any export laws pertaining to British meteorites. Thus, your interpretation of the circulars/letters as some form of a prohibitive export law makes no sense whatsoever. It would be like the US restricting the export of meteorites from Puerto Rico while ignoring/allowing exports from the mainland. Again, it simply does not make sense. You have no evidence to suggest that the export of meteorites from India is illegal, yet you continue to insist upon that notion. This really does seem to be about YOU versus the IMCA. And ME. Lol. Re: [meteorite-list] International Laws related to meteorites link - good info
Jason said: "As best I can tell, the existing arrangement is a domestic protocol for local officials to follow if they obtain a meteorite. However, recent meteorite falls in India have been commandeered by the government by local officials (and, it seems, GSI employees) with those officials threatening imprisonment if locals sell their finds. I wasn't able to find any legal justification for this, but heard similar stories surrounding both Katol and Sulagiri." Then said: "As one can see above, "I am directed to request that all Indian Meteorites may, in future, be transmitted to the Trustees of the Indian Museum in preference to sending them direct to England." " Followed by HIS OPINION "It would seem that the above letter directly refers to the exportation of meteorites from India as legal, or at least as legal as it might be to export a meteorite from England (legal), since the law (if it can be called that) was a British mandate." How can you say that after your first two comments? Anne Black has repeatedly stated Sulagiri and meteorites from India are ILLEGAL, same as Berduc and others. Dont side step this and confuse the followers with your opinions Jason... Thats almost as silly as trying to redirect this subject to me. ITS NOT ABOUT ME. Its not about you... its about the export laws that in your first comment above, CLEARLY shows that its not acceptable to the local law/governing bodies. Your second comment goes on to say that they are to be sent to England. NOT to be sent out of the country to the USA (YOU) or anyone else. The meteorites are illegal. Anne knows this, so does the IMCA board. They are just looking the other way when one of the "clique" does it. I would have liked the IMCA board to weigh in on this since it does go directly against the code of ethics, but as usual, they will likely remain silent rather then take action against over half the dealers who are members who are breaking the code of ethics. They board should not speak out against the "black market meteorites" when they allow members to conduct activities of the very nature they stand against. If I wanted, I could send the person who wrote the story the 7 IMCA members info who are selling illegal meteorites (such as berduc and others mentioned recently) with screen captures and everything from the websites they have it listed on... wonder how that would look to the readers who see the replies from Anne and other IMCA members - even though they already know of the activity! Shame on the IMCA for being so shameful in regards to the equal enforcement of its own rules. Jason has his blacklist, but as with the IMCA, he picks and chooses who to include. I was unable to find a record of any actual laws pertaining to the subject, but did find the article that Greg posted and put some additional work into the matter. As best I can tell, the existing arrangement is a domestic protocol for local officials to follow if they obtain a meteorite. However, recent meteorite falls in India have been commandeered by the government by local officials (and, it seems, GSI employees) with those officials threatening imprisonment if locals sell their finds. I wasn't able to find any legal justification for this, but heard similar stories surrounding both Katol and Sulagiri. The circulars/letters in question appear to have come from the ruling British Government as instructions for India's Government. http://books.google.com/books?id=jRUTYAAJ&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=Circular+No.+22-1777+1869+Thornton&source=bl&ots=xNJjVEoCO4&sig=BLjQnyh5DiIn3kY-lwunvpx5Bvo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=RZEIUISCJKfe2AWZm7DkBw&ved=0CEwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Circular%20No.%2022-1777%201869%20Thornton&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=jRUTYAAJ&pg=RA2-PA95&lpg=RA2-PA95&dq=Letter+2447+1869+may+india&source=bl&ots=xNJjVEpvP0&sig=wxRxybUsdq_cKITHbT4HfkYFXsk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=d5IIUKiVDsKg2gW72ZnGBw&ved=0CEgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Letter%202447%201869%20may%20india&f=false As one can see above, "I am directe

thats the whole reason I spoke up on this issue. There are IMCA board members feeding Jason utas information to create his IMCA blacklist website, yet he is breaking the IMCA code of ethics and also international laws. The IMCA will do nothing about it as Jason id protected by the IMCA board. Its a sad situation indeed. When its a part of the clique they look the other way. I was good enough to run for the board and yet two months later was no longer an IMCA member because I rocked the boat. I am sorry, I WILL NOT keep quiet when I see issues. How about the fact Adam Hupe OWNS the IMCA now? Where is that public info unless you do extensive research and pay the money to get records? How about how the IMCA was NOT non profit for several years? yet certain members what to team up and build a blacklist website and then sell illegally exported meteorites? The IMCA is complete BS and so futile at this point it is not much more then a marketing gimmick. I will speak out on this because I am not afraid of them or what they will try to do to my business. they already have done what they can to make me look bad, so I am returning the favor. THE IMCA IS A WASTE OF A GREAT IDEA. It is a group with good intentions, but run by many that have no other interest then money and no love for meteorites. Anne Black does not care about meteorites. She is all about the money she can make off them. So are several others in charge of the group. Its not the IMCA, its the IMDA (D for dealers) at this point. Owned and controlled by dealers who do not collect and dont have the passion a collector does. Let the crickets chirp as they keep quiet and try to hide this. I beg the board, challenge what I am saying, please do... I will prove you wrong at every turn. I made mistakes in trusting people, but made it right and that led to a lot of personal issues in my life. My wanting to share meteorites with others. I had dreams that were not able to be made reality. I admit that, but it was only my passion for these space rocks that did it. Not some scheme or scam. Just dreams. Jason cant say that, Anne cant say that. most the IMCA board who remains quiet cant say that. I dare them to speak up... they wont because it will affect the money they make and the fancy cars they drive. I have nothing to lose, so I speak my mind. So be it... So.. are you saying The IMCA only publicly denounce a persons actions if the person is NOT a memeber of the IMCA. Otherwise they hide the shameful actions of their members? YOU yourself publicly slammed me some time ago while I was a member and it got reactions from other members, some who offered to buy the entire board the Roberts rule of order manual which you guys turned down... its a shame you did, you may have learned something. I have learned from my mistakes, you obviously have not. Jason has openly admitted to selling this without proper export permits... please tell me about your email to me saying the reason I was kicked out was due to me importing buzzard coulee without a permit? I still have the emails and will share to ANYONE who wants to see... the Official reason I am not longer a member per your board was due to Buzzard Coulee import while the permits where still in process (which I ended up getting!) tell me I am wrong and I will post the email publicly! It is illegal to collect meteorites in India. And meteorites are government property. The authority for this is the Geological Survey of India. And as far as I know, they never trade or deal with any individuals or private institutions. There cannot be any export papers as export is banned. Although I wonder how having a export paper or certificate helps ? If a specimen is up for sale, it is definitely out of the country and has been exported. By the way does anyone have a analysis report on this new find ? M.E. Re: [meteorite-list] [Meteorites] http://phys.org/news184402061.html
NWA 6871 had a rather large diamond (for a meteorite) extracted from it after causing a lot of trouble during the cutting process. It was without a doubt the hardest meteorite I or several others have come across. Dr. David Vann did the cutting and Im sure he could go into more details of the process which was not very easy. It tore through blades left and right. I have not seen much online about diamonds found in meteorites that were able to be held in your hand, much less seen with the naked eye like the one we pulled out of it. Its going to be studied later in July which should hopefully provide some more details about it and perhaps help science to better understand the process of formation of it and maybe a few other things will come from the research. Here are a few photos for everyone to enjoy of this exciting find - I am calling it "The Gump Diamond" because meteorites are like a box of chocolates... you never know what your gonna get. Showing scale and size http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5332-4.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5281-3.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00608-3.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00607-2.jpg Close ups http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00610-3.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00606-3.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00609-3.jpg Here is more detailed information on NWA 6871 that is already available. http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=53784 Physical characteristics: A single extremely hard, brown stone weighing 119 g and almost impossible to cut. Small adamantine crystals of diamond were extracted from the stone by Mr. Catterton. Petrography: Coarse-grained aggregate of olivine and orthopyroxene with finer grained interstitial regions containing opaque material, calcite and limonite. Some thin calcite veinlets cross-cut the specimen. Both olivine and pyroxene are completely recrystallized to aggregates of myriad tiny, polygonal subgrains. Geochemistry: Olivine cores Fa19.4-20.0 (CaO=0.3 wt.%, Cr2O3=0.7 wt.%), rims Fa10.5; orthopyroxene Fs12.6-13.7Wo3.7-3.4. Classification: Achondrite (ureilite). The very high shock experienced by this specimen (causing complete recrystallization of silicates and evidently generation of significant amounts of microdiamond) is unusual among ureilites. Specimens: A total of 20 g of material is on deposit at App and one polished thin section is at UWS. Mr. G. Catterton holds the main mass. [meteorite-list] AD - Meteorites for sale - NEW very unusual ureilite
"The very high shock experienced by this specimen (causing complete recrystallization of silicates and evidently generation of significant amounts of microdiamond) is unusual among ureilites." Small adamantine crystals of diamond were extracted from the stone ... coarse-grained aggregate of olivine and orthopyroxene with finer grained interstitial regions containing opaque material, calcite and limonite. Some thin calcite veinlets cross-cut the specimen. Both olivine and pyroxene are completely recrystallized to aggregates of myriad tiny, polygonal subgrains. Re: [meteorite-list] Diamonds and meteorites - NWA 6871 and its "Gump Diamond"
Here are some much higher quality images that were taken at App State today of the diamond found in NWA 6871. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00606.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00608.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSC00610.jpg I think I may have sent the last email as rich text, here is a repeat of the previous one... I have found a rather large diamond inside the newly classified NWA 6871 ureilite meteorite (provsional) While it may be small for a diamond, I have not seen any "holdable" diamonds from meteorites or read about them, as this one is. Its only about the size of the ball in a ball point pen and weighs roughly .025g but is a stunning sight and was found in a slice of a very shocked and unusual ureilite. I though some of you may like to see it. I am calling it the "Gump Diamond" as it is the shinning example that "meteorites are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get" Close up of diamond http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5281.jpg Diamond with scale cube http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5332-1.jpg More to come on this awesome find soon. Personally, I share the same sentiment as most of you - it would be heresy to destroy a meteorite to extract something that is available here on Earth, even if it wasn't cost-prohibitive. At 41 years old, I have made it this far in life with terrible math skills, so this old dog isn't going to take any refresher courses. I was hoping one of the more skilled (and intelligent) members would act as a human calculator and cipher this question for me. :) So in this particular case, the 32kg iron meteorite contains ~1.5 troy ounces of gold, with a current market value of ~$2550. What sparked my curiosity was the apparently high gold content that was measured in milligrams and not the usual micrograms one expects to see. One last question, perhaps rhetorical in a sense, has anyone ever seen gold in a meteorite? I mean, has there ever been a visible "bleb" or gold inclusion in a meteorite? Or is all of the gold bound up on a molecular level and invisible to the naked eye and 10x loupe? I guess there won't be a gold rush to the asteroid belt Best regards, MikeG -- --

Re: [meteorite-list] Kenya Fall & Hammers
Wow, congrats. This is a big money fall. 10,500 grams recovered at $100 per gram will yield over 1 million in profit... Can wait to see pics. Greg Catterton www.wanderingstarmeteorites.com On Ebay: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/wanderingstarmeteorites On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/WanderingStarMeteorites - Original Message - From: Jim Wooddell To: Meteorite-List Cc: Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 5:48 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Kenya Fall & Hammers This is from Mike... Trying to get this to the meteorite list but tried more than 30 hours ago with no response from Art. This email is premature due to circumstances out of my control sadly. I am announcing the recovery of over 11.7 kilograms of the new Kenya meteorite fall from 16 July, 2011. I saw the news of the fall on 17 July, and purchased a ticket to Kenya about 4 hours later. I arrived in Kenya on 20 July, and on the morning of 21 July, less than 125 hours after the fall, I had more than a kilo in hand. Upon arriving at the fall location, I met a guy who knew a girl who saw a stone land only 5 feet from her in a coffee field while working at ~10:30 am when the explosions rocked the sky. It was cloudy at the fall site so no one saw anything, just heard massive explosions and then loud whistling and sounds that most described as gunfire. Moments after buying that stone, I went to another house of a boy who found a 777 gram stone in a coffee field about 30 minutes after the fall. I stayed 9 days in Kenya, purchasing 10.5 kilos of stones, including the as of now main mass of 3.5 kg. The first stone that was reported on the news weighs less than 2.5 kg, not 5 kg reported. Most interesting about this fall is that it also has 3 seperate hammerstones! First is a househitter that smashed through a metal house roof. I paid to have the rooftop cut out and purchased several fragments of the meteorite, including more on this trip. Second was a stone that weighed more than 350 grams which went through the roof of a greenhouse, and was witnessed by a man working there, it smashed into a metal growing table and exploded into hundreds of pieces. I have all of that one and the plastic hole where it was cut out to be patched. Third is another greenhouse smasher from the same complex, found only 3 days ago by workers moving plants out. It broke into several pieces virtually all of which Greg Hupe and I recovered. It has been subjected to high humidity for a month. I have built a strewnfield map of all but 3 pieces, with exact locations. I returned almost two weeks ago for round two with Greg Hupe. We were able to purchase only an additional 6 stones totalling 1150 grams. This fall is not thick, despite intense searching by hundreds of people who need the money very badly, they have found little. We hired 25 workers for the last two weeks, working from 8 am to 6 pm scouring the bushland, cornfields, banana plantations, and coffee fields, without a single recovery from them. I hunted and walked a great many miles myself with no finds. This was a large fall but seems to be very spread out and large areas are either not huntable or are under heavy cultivation as harvest and tilling is going on now. I have already sold several large pieces of this meteorite, I will have some for sale, but less than 1 kg. I will be building a page about it in the next 48 hours as I am in London now, on my way home. It is already in the lab under study, thin sections on the way and from my own observations I think this meteorite will likely be an L4 or 5. It has no brecciation or veining other than what I suspect are some metal veins seen from the outside, have cut nothing. Expect to hear more from me as soon as I get rested up and get my site ready. There will be little of this available, mostly small fragments, I may have one or two larger stones available, 279~ g and 313~ gram 100% complete, but not cheap! Expenses were more than $1000 per day not including airfare. Nobody works for free in Kenya, to get them to move, money had to come out. In their own words " I need to be properly motivated". Heard that exact phrase more than once. Michael Farmer - Original Message - From: "Meteorite Mania!" Speaking of big CAIs... Here is a rather nice 1cm plus CAI from a new CV3 I had classified. This one is on its way to Germany for research and study (may be the largest CAI ever!) but is still nice to look at. They contain more refractory elements than the "ordinary" condrules they are found with. They were formed at higher temperatures and many show signs of repeated meltings. They are older than the next most early solar system materials, the chondrules, by 2,000,000 years or so. Two different dating methods give ages of 4567 my and 4571 my.for CAI's. Sterling K. [meteorite-list] More bad meteorites - Zunhua wrongs H- when will it end?
Well... I was scammed with the mifflin-wrong. Lost over $4000 on that... had someone steal $300 in meteorites from me over it also... Now there is another fake meteorite... Zunhua. If you have Zunhua it may not be Zunhua, and it did not come from me. This is what happens when people put $100 per gram prices on OCs. More to come on this... Re: [meteorite-list] Free Shipping
I have found $5 will cover overseas postage most the time. When shipping outside the USA, I use more bubble rap and it also takes more time to fill out customs forms etc. Then you factor in cost of bubble mailer, ink, paper etc... a lot of people dont think about the added costs for secure shipping. Re: [meteorite-list] Re : Re : Moroccan business meteorite is suffering
But that there is the very dangerous and terrible downside to meteorite selling. Eventually most will be crumbs and sub gram samples that offer little to no scientific value. So many forget that while this is a hobby for some, scientists and researchers have made careers out of studying these wonderful rocks from space. Its not always about the dollar and thats the one ingredient of the Meteorite men that is so troubling. I know if there is no money values viewers may not tune in, but its more like a cash for treasures show then a science show with so much $$ flashing around after every find. (not a jab at the show, I think its great to draw in new collectors) Greg Catterton www.wanderingstarmeteorites.com IMCA member 4682 On Ebay: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/wanderingstarmeteorites On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/WanderingStarMeteorites --- On Sun, 6/5/11, Michael Gilmer wrote: > From: Michael Gilmer > Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Re : Re : Moroccan business meteorite is > suffering > To: "bill kies" > Cc: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com > Date: Sunday, June 5, 2011, 8:46 PM > I've been saying it for years - buy > low as possible, sell high. > > Go on open market, buy a $10 micromount. > > Cut that 1-inch square micro into 10 smaller squares and > sell each > square for $5. > > If you cannot afford a saw, whack the micro with a hammer > and sell > each piece for $5. > > Bingo, you have just quintupled your money before expenses > and overhead. > > Do this on 50-100 micros a month and your rent is paid. > > Lather rinse repeat. > > There is so much profit potential in meteorites - even with > the > wholesale prices climbing. While I wont buy a meteorwrong (would rather spend the $1-$5 per gram on real meteorites) I do have a small collection I or others have found or I have been given. I find they work good in meteorite presentations to show what not to look for and common wrong indicators. I will often put a right in with a pile of wrongs and kids who pick the meteorite get a free meteorite. To me, they just are not worth buying. They do help me teach kids, so they do have some value... Re: [meteorite-list] Largest CAI?
I came across that link while searching for info. Its the biggest photographed I was able to find also. Hard to tell from pics, but I think mine is bigger with a good amount more mass. It looks to have some bluish looking crystals in it. More pics: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5382.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5372.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5371.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/DSCF5367.jpg The CAI looks to be roughly 1 inch across and up to 1/2 inch thick - if it does not go into the stone more then I can see. The slice Jim has is the non Mifflin stone. Jim, sorry, I have tons of emails, just got to yours and sent you an email as you must have been posting this. I am reclaiming the material and will be sending a sample soon to be tested to try to confirm when this fell and just what it is. Re: [meteorite-list] Mifflin Update... and Real Mifflin Photos...
No, I am refunding, giving credit and/or exchanges to all who got the material. While I am taking the steps needed to get 100% of the material returned to me, I still want answers that clearly have not been given... like what is this stone, when/how long ago did it fall and what it likely is. Further testing will be done, and has already been set up. I want answers and so do many others. Proper testing is the only way it can be done. I am doing the best I can to be open and honest concerning what I am doing. Ok. I cant keep this quite anymore... Screw the lies and secrets. I think the truth should be out there. About Joes "awesome" stone... He told me personally and we also talked over email about it... he found it on the same persons property that someone else had already stolen a stone from. Yes, I know this because he told me directly. No second hand BS. He lied to everyone and even had a totally BS story published about his finding it under a bridge. So please, before anyone else goes to say how Joe fed his family, took a trip to disney world and what not, he lied about finding it and thats the true story behind the "Kerchner Stone" Yes, his family ate, but what about the person whos land it fell on? Ask her how her family trip to disney went... Joe, sorry man, but it had to come out at some time. I took public one person who stole material from Mifflin, anyone else care to out the other? I dont know the whole story, so I will let others tell that tale. I know many on this list know of Joes lie and also the other person... but I honestly doubt ANYONE will come forward on this. Re: [meteorite-list] Mifflin, Amiss
I first want to say that Carl has "made things right" with me. Secondly, I am fairly sure most of the material has been made known to the buyers at this time and steps have been taken to make things right with them. Upon being informed of this, I contacted the person who did the testing and they confirmed the results. I have dealt with him, and trust his work 100%. I hope those that are following this understand I was sold a stone that was told to me was mifflin and have done what I needed to help resolve this issue and show that I have done nothing under handed. On a side note, and I learned of some of this from this issue... Two people reportedly stole meteorites from the land owners in WI. Large ones... One made a totally BS story of it being found under a bridge that was published and upon reading is really laughable with many holes that most would readily pick out... I know because he told me directly. The other... while I dont know full details, many others do, but remain quite. WHY has this activity not been addressed and just swept up under the rug? Surely these actions need addressed just as this does. I want to make it clear that while I am not attempting to cast blame or redirect this issue, there is more going on that still remains a little secret to those that know and it too should come out. Re: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality
I think its more very long term thinking by the USA to corner the oil market once everyone elses oil supply is gone. The USA will end up being the next oil exporting giant. Use everyone elses then use ours. I agree with Richard, and also if you do contact him, be very polite. He has done a good amount of research on meteorites and is a nice person to talk with. I wanted to post about my discussion with him so others knew his comments were out of context. After reading the article then researching him, I shocked me he would have such a strong stance and opinion based on his work he has done. Re: [meteorite-list] So all meteorites are illegal?
I just spoke with Dr Ralph Harvey a little bit about his quotes. Given his research and history, I wanted to better understand his comments. It seems his comments were taken out of context to some degree (so he states) and mentioned to me he was speaking to meteorites recovered without proper export permits and documentation (specifically mentioned Egypt) from countries that do not allow export that are openly offered for sale - even by IMCA members. I know this is a heated issue and there is a lot of opinions, but I think this is something we need to address... there are even websites that claim NWA meteorites help terrorism! Re: [meteorite-list] Gebel Kamil
Prices are interesting with the meteorite. I do know that most of the material on the market is "stolen" and should not be sold. Egypt does not allow the export of meteorites and last I read, only about 2kg was approved for export. Its a nice meteorite, but should be considered illegal just like Berduc and others that come from countries with harsh export laws.
