[meteorite-list] NWA 4302 - very unusual matrix, unique..

2010-04-06 Thread Joe Kerchner
Hello listees,
Just wondering if anyone has any more pics of the insanely beautiful
Diogenite. It is the strangest one I have ever seen. I wouls not have picked it
up, the one who found this must have a terrific meteorite eye.
Here is a link to a great photo of it. I want to see more. In this image you
can see a little iron, and tons of green crystals and white matrix that really
looks like quartz, but it's not

It sound like this could be a huge fall, I believe it was the one seen in PA.
>From PA to MI, it must have been a big one.
It reminds me of Peekskill.
Sounds like a great place to go hunt, u can bet some hunters are already on
their way to MI, if I weren't so broke, I would be on my way right now. Anyone
want to fund a trip? Just Kidding
Good luck to anyone hunting this one, hope it gets found and its a rare type.

Dear List,

Anonymous ": I just saw a huge meteor falling in Michigan about 10:15 tonight.
It had a giant blue ball with a red tail. It fell north of 30 mile road around
I94 or west of 94. Anyone else see anything?

This nutjob posts on various astronomy forums. He thinks every rock imaged on
Mars is a fossilized liver or brain, and that meteorites are full of fossilized
bacteria. The guy is so extreme that mental illness is the only likely excuse.
There's nothing to be embarrassed about- nobody that matters is likely to take
him seriously. (I already saw a response in one forum, pointing out that your
image did not show a housefly in a meteorite; where I saw this posting I also
saw a link to your site, so anybody can go there and see that for themselves.
In fact, you should think of this as free advertising- I found the claim so
extraordinary that I followed the link and say your excellent page, which I
might otherwise have missed .)

I found 2 new pieces of the famous meteorwrong, the "MendotaWrong". One of
them I cut in half(26gr and 35gr) and I have one complete individual 133.3
grams. All are for sale for a buck a gram. I am unable to take photos because
my camera is broken. Here is a link where you can see many pics of the other
ones that I have already sold.
http://illinoismeteorites.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?num=1243030765/20
When I offered this material before it went really fast. I have been told by
many of the people who purchased this last time that it is the best meteorwrong
they have ever seen, that is also true for me.
I only have three of these available so if you are thinking about this you
should act fast.

[meteorite-list] illinois meteorites found

2010-04-03 Thread Joe Kerchner
hello listees,
Just wanted to know if anyone has found any more Illinois meteorites from any
of the known "strewnfields"/old find areas.
I have found a few small Woodbine meteorites 0.5gr, 0.5gr, and 6gr (before
cutting)
I also found a small less than half gram Marengo meteorite. I will probably be
keeping these finds in my collection unless I get a good offer for one of them.
I plan on getting back out to both places many more times this spring and
summer. anyone in the area who would like to hunt with me at either one of
these place is more than welcome. The Marengo find was a surprise, I took home
many small stones that were really attracted to my magnet, I polished a window
in each one and was very surprised to find out one of the smaller stones was
part of the meteorite. I have a few photos of the woodbine finds here on the
SkyRock Cafe, take a look:

Re: [meteorite-list] Re super magnet

2009-12-25 Thread Joe Kerchner
Pete,

I use 2 different places. K&J Magnetics:
 http://www.kjmagnetics.com/categories.asp?PARTNER=illinoismeteorites

Then there is a guy on ebay that sells some nice ones at a pretty low price low
price:

http://cgi.ebay.com/N50-2x2x1-Neodymium-Rare-Earth-Magnet-250-LB-Pull_W0QQitemZ170421977287QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27adf100c7
http://shop.ebay.com/magnet4less/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340

The only reason I sometimes use K&J is because they have nice deals once in
a while and you know for sure what you get if what you looked at. Ebay you can
not always be sure they are the streangth they are said to be, such as N42,
N50, N52, ect
Hope that helps.

Most of them weren't really found too close to the rail road tracks, a few

I am happy to say I pegged this as a wrong from the start, mainly due to
visible quartz in it, however I will say that its an awesome piece to have in
my collection and a great example of just how right looking a wrong can be.

If you dont have one yet and would like to have an awesome wrong, this is it.

Its my opinion that this is some sort of industrial waste or slag as I cant
imagine this forming naturally on Earth.
Given that a good portion was found close to railroad tracks, it might be
interesting to see if there was a lost car (derailed) or something of that
nature in the area of the find.

I should have more testing results soon, when I get them, I will offer it to
everyone.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorwrongs

2009-12-17 Thread Joe Kerchner
Thanks Elton,
I appreciate all your help on this. I agree on it's uniqueness and its appeal,
I am glad that everyone is happy with it, However I do disagree with 2 things
you said below. The metal does rust if I dont dry it off after cutting and
polishing them, also they are very strongly attracted to a magnet, more than
most of my chondrites, even some of the H chondrites.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorwrongs

As one of the auxillary testers, let me recommend this meteorwrong
just from the aesthetics and uniqueness. This item is unique so far
as is know in that it contains armored clasts ( vs armored
chondrules). Some pieces show a series of "braided" veins of Iron
Carbide.

This caused quiet a stir as no one had seen this in any meteorite nor
natural ore and given the lack of rust one of the researchers
suspected a smelting artifact right off. The extremely low cobalt
nickel content(<3ppm), low REE and presence of silica aka quartz were
the key diagnostics.

The metal veins are in actuality iron carbide-- they are iridescent
and won't rust. Iron carbide can form when hot carbon monoxide gas is
forced through the charge containing martensite in some furnace
operations. The mineral name for iron carbide is cementite: Fe3C (or
Fe2C:Fe) Were this from a meteorite and containing Ni or Co then the
mineral name would be cohenite. Cementite is ferromagnetic accounting
for the weak to moderate attraction to a magnet.

Highly recommended. I bought an end piece from Joe already, or would go for
your offering, Steve. Listees, if you don't have one of these...get
one...extraordinary. I can't believe it isn't extra terrestial. Scrape is
right. Specific gravity is in range. Hundreds of clasts and chondrule like
inclusions, many armored. Stunning bright metal rivulets attracted to a magnet.
A real enigma.

Thanks Joe for getting it out where we can enjoy it.

On to Tucson.

[meteorite-list] Illinois Meteorwrong sale, I NEED $$ Quick Sale - AD

2009-12-16 Thread Joe Kerchner
Hello all,
I know that many of you have already purchased a slice or two of this
material. I have heard back fro ma few of you on how much you like it and how
much it looks like a meteorite. I posted a few of the comments below.
I just want to announce that I am having a sale for the next 24 hours. You
will all get free shipping and $5 off of orders $25 or more, $10 orders over
$50, and $20 on orders over $100. The only reason I am having this sale is
because I'm not done X-mas shopping, but I'm out out money, those two do not go
together too well. Thanks you and God Bless.

Comments on this material:

Got the 21.4 gram
slice. Way cool. If this were meteoritic it would be one of the most beautiful
meteorites ever found.

Also joe kerchners 75
gram endcut meteorwrong also came. It sure could pass for a meteorite. This
seems to have all the nessesary elements to be a meteorite. If you do not have
a piece, you should get one just for the sure beauty of it.
_
If you have not gotten
your meteorwrong from Joe,
you seriously need to get one.
This is the most realistic wrong on the planet. It has metal,
pseudo chrondrules, shock veins, metal inclusions, a very realistic
matrix, what will pass for fusion crust, and it just looks
like the real deal.
I defey you to just look at it without any magnifying glasses
or other means of analysis, save only a magnet.
and say it's what ever the heck it is.
That's just the thingwhat the heck is it?
I dunno, but it sure looks like the real thing.
_
Joe has got one great
wrong here.
Get a piece - you will like it. Everybody needs a wrong or two to show for
comparison and education of others. The Mendota Mystery Wrong is a great
choice.
___
I got a couple of
pieces from Joe early on and have been waiting for the results. Now we know. I
will tell you though having them in hand they are great looking pieces. Better
than his photos show. I recommend the Mendota specimens . They are good looking
even if a wrong. You will like the specimens Joe has.

Greetings,

Some of you may remember a while back that Joe Kerchner found some interesting
looking specimens while out meteorite hunting. I was involved in helping him
get the specimens to a researcher who has determined they are a good
meteorwrong but not a meteorite.

Many may remember a number of meteorwrongs we have come a cross in the past
like some of the Russian specimens that turned out to be a terrestrial basalt
with nickel in it. I feel that Joe's specimens are an excellent meteorwrong and
have added a sample to my collection. I thought others might want to contact

pieces I got left are around 10 grams or less, mayby just a couple larger ones,
none very big at all. If you see something you like on the for sale page, you

Possible explanations:

1) Publicity stunt to increase tourism perpetrated by Borat
2) Russian weapons test gone bad
3) Underground weapons cache spontaneously exploded
4) Latest experiment from balloon boy's dad

Wouldn't a meteor big enough to cause this type of crater be buried
under the ground? Wouldn't there be more than 1 meteorite?

Cool video and crater.

The reason that I agree with richard on this one is because the guy who took it
said it only laste a couple seconds. he then said he pulled the phone out of

shhot and get a photo with the object almost in the center of the photo whil it

I have a small 10.2 gram slice of this on eBay. It could be a chance to get it
at a really good price. If it is a meteorite, it will be worth a lot. It is
being tested both at ASU and by Professor A. Basu, who is testing a thin slice
of it. He thinks it may be a new find. If it turns out not to be a new
meteorite, it will be a rare terrestrial stone, it tests pos for Ni, we all
know that there is only 1 know terrestrial stone that contains native FeNi, and
it is found only in Syberia. If it does turn out to be a meteorite, it will
probably be a really rare type, I have not been able to find another meteorite
that resembles this stone. Here is a link to the ebay auction:

[meteorite-list] possible meteorite craters in Ville Platte, La

2009-08-24 Thread Joe Kerchner
Hello listees,
I got a call last night from a Mr. Carroll Aguillar from Ville Platte, La.
He told me that he has like 5 craters on his property, he said they have been
there since he was a kid, he is now in his 60's. He said they are now filled
in, but you can see where they were and the ground is still lowere in them.
They range fro around 5 to 11 feet in diameter. He is wanting to know if there
is anybody in the area or somewhere who would be interested in going to see
them and try and figure out what they are. I suggested that they may be sink
holes, but he is adiment that they are not. He is sure they were from
meteorites, I am not 100% convinced, but I do think it may be worth checking
out, it might be a good spot to hunt for meteorites. If I lived closer, I would
check them out myself.
If anybody is interested they can contact me and I will give his information
to you. He wants somebody to contact him.
Thanks,
Joe Kerchner

Aloha -

Not being a registered member, and I don't really need another bunch of stuff
to read - I noticed:

'albert_yap' - Rare Nepal Himalayas Chondrite Meteorite Sky Stone II

What he has there is a (not so Rare) Akaash Dhunga = Sky Stone. Local story is
that they are associated with Lightning/Thunder, often "plough up the ground",
and are found at the end of a ploughed up area...

They become religious objects...

Interestingly - they are all in the shape of / similar to, small adze/axes
reminiscent of the neolithic... I have a small collection of them that I got
when I returned to Nepal in 1988 - I worked there as a Peace Corps volunteer,
and hadn't seen one when I was there '78-82 ... in '88 one or two stores in
Kathmandu had a few.

Alas - they are not magnetic (though, Maybe I should go back and check my stash
with a stronger magnet)

While it would be cool if they really were meteorites - I doubt it :-) :-)

To his credit - Sky Stones - is the local name... chondrite, however, is
dubious.

You are welcome to post that on the Cafe... and if you need pics of a selection
of them, let me know.

cheers - Ted Brattstrom

take a path that is not 100% straight, could it still be a meteor? The

Hi All,

What are those silicated Campos? Are they irons that have not yet completed
it's differentiation, similar to pallasites? Or are they more like
mesosiderites with the silicated material from an asteroid that have impacted
another asteroid to the iron core? Or are they something else? Are the two
materials unrelated to each other as in mesosiderites?

Doesn't matter at this point whether or not they are Campos (I remember reading
somewhere they were found several hundred miles away), it's just a name anyway,
but to my untrained eye they look more like mesos. Also, is the Toluca (b)(?)
formed the same way?

Thanks in advance. Carl

2009-07-18 Thread Joe Kerchner

Rob and List,
There is nothing "illegal" about the way Carl found it, Just cuz
somebody makes the first find, no matter who it is does not own the
strewnfield, not by any means, unless it is on his property. If not it is fair
game, just cuz it is in AZ they feel the need to sccop it all up for them
selves, thats not right, they can use any excuse they want, I see it as
selfish, who is to say Carl will not get GPS coordinance and in situ photo?
After the way Jack, Mike and the other acted, I would not give them any info on
my finds, they are not doing the same for anyone else. This fall just shows the
true colors of some of the hunters. Like you said, when Jack invited Farmer he
knew there was a chance that somebody may find the strewnfield cuz he is so
high profile. He took that chance and it happened. Carl did not putr a beakon
on Mikes Car. There are no written Meteorite Hunter Rules or Ethics, Like mike
said it is a blood sport. just MHO

Subject: Meteorite hunting ethics

Hi Joe/List,

> I feel Carl did nothing wrong, He found the strewnfield the
> only way he could, and he found it.

If by "wrong", you mean "illegal", then I would agree with you.
But if you mean "ethical", you're starting to get into a gray
area and a slippery slope. For instance, if Carl found his way
by his own devices (e.g. witness interviews, geometric triangulation,
etc.) to within a mile or two of the strewn field and discovered
a parked car (or several parked cars) in an odd location with
people walking around outside in 100+ degree temperatures, then
that would be an independent discovery. No problem.

But suppose he was only able to get within 10 miles of the right
location, and happened to spot Jack, or Robert or Mike driving by
while he was stopped for gas? 10 minutes later and gassed up, he
takes the same road and keeps driving until he spots their parked
vehicles. Still ethical? (100 square miles would have been a lot
of ground to cover, with no confirmation that you were even close
to the right location.) Suppose rather than merely driving the
same road 10 minutes later he had actively followed them,
remaining in visual range. Not illegal, but meteorite hunting
skill is slowly being overtaken by espionage.

Suppose Carl only knew that the fall was somewhere far enough
southeast of Tucson that any hunter from the Tucson area would
take I-10. He spots Mike entering the highway at an early hour
and follows him the rest of the way (staying far enough behind
so that his "tail" isn't spotted). Would you now feel as
comfortable saying, "I feel Carl did nothing wrong, he found
the strewnfield the only way he could"?

If you're still fine with this, let's take it a bit further.
Suppose you just don't have a head for math or geometry and don't
know east from west. But you happen to find out where Mike lives.
You have no idea when he's headed out and don't have the patience
to wait for days at a freeway entrance ramp. Why leave anything
to chance? Just stick a locator beacon on the underside of his
vehicle and see where he goes from the comfort of your air-
conditioned living room! (Of course, now you would have crossed
the line from unethical to illegal.)

My hyperbole is meant to illustrate that one man's "fair and
square" may be another man's "cheating". In this particular case,
Mike was put in a rather uncomfortable position because in poker
parlance he unintentionally provided the "tell" that revealed
the fall location to an outside party. How would you feel if you
had been invited to assist in the recovery of a new fall under
the condition that you not reveal that location to anyone else?
Embarrassed? Angry? Could anyone blame you for feeling that way?
After all, through no real fault of your own you have broken
your promise to Jack.

Jack is wise to the ways of the world, and certainly knew that
involving anyone else (and in particular someone high-profile)
was a calculated risk -- one that for a few weeks has certainly
paid off in terms of getting accurate masses, find locations,
and in situ photos. More finds than he would have made working
alone. I would hope that anyone who finds their way to the fall
site (preferably by non-cloak-and-dagger-means) would respect
Jack's work as the P.I. on this fall and provide him with all
find data. That means masses, coordinates, and in situ images.
If you don't have a GPS unit or a digital camera, find someone
who does before extracting a find; otherwise you are destroying
scientific data.

Re: [meteorite-list] Pitiful excuse for a meteorite hunter Carl Esparza

2009-07-18 Thread Joe Kerchner

Micheal and list,
I feel Carl did nothing wrong, He found the strewnfield the only way he
could, and he found it. I would have to say he did his homework. I see some
hypocritical statements, Who is to say it is not a "free strewnfield" ? When
somebody finds a meteorite, they can not call dibs on the strewnfield, So if I
find a meteorite I can say nobody get to hunt for more until I say it's ok?
That sounds crazy to me, thats just not how things are done. Just cuz it fell
in AZ it does not make it any different than anyother fall, most falls are in
some meteorite hunbters "backyard/state" that does not give them the right to
say when somebody gets to hunt it, if they keep the coordinance serete and
somebody find the strewnfield, no matter how they find it, it is fair game for
them to hunt and give the coordinance out to whom ever they want to. I feel
Steve made a good point, no matter how you found his car, you used the location
of his car to get som info from him, no
matter what you say you were there for, I am pretty sure that you hunted that
area eventually. Carl did NOTHING wrong, he found it fair and square, this is
nobody's fall, nobody no matter who live near it. IMHO.

Steve

There are a few differences in these situations.

1. West was a free for all, I merely drove a mile down the road and found 5 or
6 cars and lots of hunters sitting beside the road, not exactly James Bond
level work (I know them all) so I stopped. I was not out looking for you. And
there were about 50 hunters in the strewnfield at that time, all we were doing
was expanding the known area.

2. I was not begging people to give your vehicle information so I could spy on
you.

3. This is not a free for all strewnfield yet, and Carl in that email was
making offers, that if those he asked gave him my car data, he would make it
worth their information.

4. Carl is acting like the searching for my vehicle is meteorite hunting as
opposed to taking eyewitness reports, driving all over southern Arizona, taking
aziumuths with compasses, and triangulating this fall, which is what Jack did.
Homework paid off, he did not stoop to merely looking for the hunters.

Steve, I wanted your data on your West stones more for total known weight and
number of stones found more than coordinates. I knew where you were the whole

I guess I have to watch for cars waiting at my gate from now on. Taking the

2009-07-10 Thread Joe Kerchner

GREAT post Steve. I agree 100%. I have not read the 1999 Smithsonian mag, but I
have seen Meteorite Men. I learned a lot from it and it got me wanting to hunt
even more than I already do, that can't be a bad thing. I'm sure im not the
only one. I am sure you show will help some new finds to undoubtedly be found
by people who saw your show. Keep up the good work and I wish you, Geoff and
everyone else hunting over there the best of luck on the July 6th fall hunt.
Can't wait to see the pics of the new finds I am sure that will be found soon.
Best of Luck,

Hello Michael and all,

I am sorry for being so delayed in responding to your post. I have been
busy today interviewing with the Fox TV station in York, and the NBC station
in Lancaster and some other network (maybe ABC) in Baltimore. Then I had a
radio interview with NPR after that. It has been a busy day doing all
this media stuff.

Back in the day, when your mentor Casper was still haunting the Meteorite
List, he tried to get people into online fights all the time. But back
then every time I was tempted to reply to him, I was reminded of an old
saying: "Don't get in a mud wrestling match with a pig, as you both will get
muddy, and the pig will just enjoy it."

I know you like nothing better than to get into arguments. And trust me,
I am not entering this dialog with you just so you can get your jollies. I
figure it is about time to make a response.

I have remained quiet for over a year as you just seem to go on and on and
on and on and on and on and on ad infinitum. In a way, it is funny. In a
way it really is sad.

Let me pick a few things to address, from your post:

"This is out of control..." Out of control? What makes you think it
isn't in control?

You are "sickened by these stories..." You? Sickened? By stories? LOL
I thought you were born with your condition.

You don't hold your cards to your chest? Umm...ok?

Offers in papers to pay more and not to sell to greedy dealers on the
ground??? Not sure what you mean by that...but ok.

The endless media hype is getting old to you? Get used to it, it is about
to get kicked up about 7 fold! Literally, 7 fold. I would say "I am
sorry," but I'm not. It is called marketing, and it will continue.

Every email? Are you referring to my signature of "Steve Arnold of
Meteorite Men" at the end of my Meteorite List emails? If so, let me clue you
in. If you haven't noticed, there is another person in our community and on
this list, who has the same name as I do. I used to sign my name "Steve
Arnold #1" then at times I would use "Steve Arnold from Arkansas." Neither
of those I was ever really comfortable in using, but I felt it was very
necessary to distinguish me from the Steve Arnold in Chicago.

Both, people on the List, and those off the List that stumble onto posts
such as this one, maybe via Google, might get confused at times. Now that I
am more known because of the Meteorite Men show I have figured that I
would rather start using the name from which I am now more known. It is not a
matter of "promoting the show" but more to identify me. I would say "I am
sorry that you are offended," but I'm not.

Every Ebay auction? Are you referring to my ebay auctions where I mention
who I am and how I am known to the general public? In this day of
questionable sellers on ebay, I list something that distinguishes me.

By the way, is this criticism coming from the same man that for at least 7
or 8 or 9 or 10 years ceaselessly mentioned in each and every one of his
Ebay auctions: "See me in the 1999 Smithsonian Magazine"??? ROTFLMAO My
prime time show first aired ONLY 60 days ago, and will air 4 more times in
this next week. And you are already tired of my Ebay listings mention it?
LOL

Besides, what on Earth is wrong with saying "Yes, I am that guy on the TV
show!"??? If you don't like it Mike, don't read "EVERY" one of my Ebay
listings. No one makes you read each and every one I put up. Chill out
dude, really it is ok.

How long must you endure this "hype?" Well, again, my suggestion is to
get used to the marketing, it will continue. I would say "I am sorry," but
you guessed it, I'm not.

"Just get out there an work" you say? Umm, as if I am not working now?
Or are you saying that listing things on Ebay is "not working"? LOL This
is too funny.

My fame is not even worth $1.00? And may I ask what you base that
c

Subject: [meteorite-list] Stinky Meteorite

Hi List,

Don't laugh! This is weird...

While slicing some unclassified chondrite meteorites I noticed one meteorite
that was particularly odoriferous. I don't really want to say "what" this piece
smells like as I don't know if it's appropriate list content. Let's just say
that dogs lift their leg to fire hydrants, and maybe, sometime in the past,
this stone just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The smell was super intense while cutting. At first I didn't know where it was
coming from, then when I finished the cut, I actually smelled the stone to see
if that's where the odor was originating. Sure enough! Yuck!

I've cleaned the stone throughly. No amount of cleaning will remove the smell.
It's definitely coming from within the meteorite itself.

Has anyone else had any of their NWA stone meteorites that smell really bad?

Joe,
If you read about allertest on Randy's site you will see that it is a very
sensitive test and will detect even trace amounts of nickel. I have had the
same results. Fe Ni will test positive evey time. Having said that , there is
magnetite on Mars right?
Good luck. Carl

[meteorite-list] Possible new Illinois meteorite

2009-06-16 Thread Joe Kerchner

 Listees,
Hello all, I found 23 of these stones, I think might be meteorites. I was
wondering if anyone have seen any known
meteorites that resemble these stones. They has quite a bit of metal in them
and lots of inclusions. I have looked at many meteorite images looking
for a match and have not found one that matches it 100%. I have found
just over 1.9kg of it total. I sent a few sample to Al Mitterling and
he said it looks like a good candidate, but needs more testing. I was
just wondering what you all think of them. When I hear back from him I will let
everyone here know if it is or it is just a wrong.
I have been searching/hunting for over 3 years and these are the best finds
I have made to date, keeping my fingers crossed, but not counting on it, I know
how hard it is to make a cold find, especially here in Northern Illinois..

Here is a link to see some of them sliced and polished:

Re: [meteorite-list] Fireball ???

2008-04-05 Thread Joe Kerchner
Sonny,
I for sure is worth a look, the worst that could happen is that
you find nothing and get tired of walking around hunting. The best is
that you find a new meteorite and make a little money and get a great
new stone or two for your collection, just keep us updated on the hunt
results.
I want to wish you the best luck hunting, hope to see some photos of
your new finds, you can post them on the SkyRock Cafe for us all to
drool over.
Best,

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Stamps

2008-03-13 Thread Joe Kerchner
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am selling customized
USPS meteorite stamps. These will only be offered for a limited time,
each one will be removed after so many have been sold or after so long
being offered. I will be adding new ones to the collection as wellas
removing some. These are collectible, but are also authentic USPS
postage and can be used to mail packages. These ones are all $.41 cent
stamps, but are available in .58 2oz/1oz. odd, $.75 for 3oz., $.92 for
3.5oz. and $1.31 for 4oz. And even $4.60 priority mail.
The reason that they cost just a little more than the postage alone
is because they are a little larger than normal stamps and because
they are customized. Most of the images are photos that I personally
took of the Field Museum meteorite collection. I will be adding more
stamps with images from the FM collection, I will also be adding some
from my collection and others that people have sent me and requested
on a stamp, if you are interested in getting an having one made with
an image that you took, you can contact me off-list

I hope that these are successful. I am going to buy one of each
to collect and also one of each to use when I send off meteorites.

Here is a link to the meteorite stamp page.

[meteorite-list] Contest for Carancas meteorites and more!!

2008-03-04 Thread Joe Kerchner
I want to announce the start of the contest for a piece of the
Carancas meteorite, and also may artifacts related to fall.
I hope everyone can enter and everyone has a good chance of winning.
There will be a 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes. They will be judged in the
order they are received. here is a link to the contest:

http://illinoismeteorites.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1204682221/22

Best of luck to all,
Joe Kerchner

To the great folks at SkyRock,

I am happy to announce the start of the contest.

INTRODUCTION:

This is a meteoritic treasure hunt to help SkyRock grow to be one of
the best forums on the Internet and to contribute in my own small way
to the hobby of meteoritics.

The contest is open to all and will be announced in a couple of other
small forums. For obvious reasons,
I must exclude full-time professional meteorite dealers.

The real prize will be an expanded appreciation for the science of
meteoritics along with the accumulated knowledge. You can do the
contest at your leisure and shouldn't take a great deal of time.

PRIZES:
Carancas meteorites, crater floor and ejecta material, hammer material
(roof section w/ impact eject) and assorted miscellaneous items. Some
of the items are not available anywhere elseand should, in time,
increase significantly in value. Great investment potential.

I have already donated almost ½ of my entire Carancas collection to
various institutions and individuals. My wife and picked out three
beautiful stones for this contest and cringes everytime I make a
donation. Smiley

All are beautiful, fresh and loaded with fusion crust! Roll Eyes

1st prize – 3 gm + (1.7 gm that you might want to sell or trade)
2nd prize – 3 gm.
3rd prize – 1.7 gm.

Prizes will be awarded to the highest scores and announced after the
contest end. Only one submission please. Scoring is based on accuracy
and completeness of answers.

Clue #1 - Most of the answers can be found in Skyrock, Nuggetshooter,
LPI, Wikipedia, Google Earth, and the Meteoritical Society website. A
couple of questions might involve a Google web search.

Clue #2 – You can find pics of the misc. crater material if you have a
sense of HUMOR.

FIRST QUESTION SET:

What is the newest, freshest crater on earth?
Why are scientists saying this crater should have never happened?
What did they call it?
What is the largest witnessed stone fall?
What is the second?
What is the altitude of the record-breaking Carancas fall?
What is the size of the Carancas Crater? Water depth?
Where on Skyrock can you find a colorized drawing of the Carancas cráter?
Where on Skyrock can you find the eyewitness account to the Carancas fireball?
What was his name?
How did he describe the sounds of the fireball?
Since the fireball was traveling at 50x the speed of sound, how is
this possible?
Where can you find current scientific reports on the Carancas event?
What two South American institutions can you find Carancas reports?
Hint * Planetarium
What is the color of the door on the Carancas impact house?
How many animals were killed by the impact?
Approx how much ejecta hit the Carancas house? *hint photo in Skyrock

All of the remaining contest questions to be posted soon!

Darryl, Dave List,
By me defending my forum and over reacting to a negative comment.
You(Mr. Pitt) come to the conclusion that I have significant
psychological/emotional issues?I was not aware that Dave's message was
private, I thought it was post for the entire list to read, which is
the same reason I posted it to the list. I really am not a person who
agues with people all the time or a spaz. I do not understand how, by
my message alone That I am unstable and am in need of psychological
help. When I wrote that reply. I was in a terrible mood, I was having
w very bad day, I was not in my normal frame of mind. I am person who
tries to avoid conflict.
I really do not know how this got soo blown out of proportion.
How can you say I will not change? I do not understand how this got
soo out of hand. I merely spoke my mind about a person who was
belittling the SkyRock Cafe which I have put much time and money into,
so that all meteorite collectors and hunters will have a place to
share photos and stories, also to get a question answered. I analogize
to Dave for over reacting and calling him names, but I do not
understand how Darryl Pitt hats the right to say I have significant
psychological/emotional issues. That bothers me. How can they think I
have problem, simply because I was defending My forum, I never said
anything about Mr. Pitt and he attacks me. I do not know what that
proves, but it does show his true colors. I want no problems and I
hope that this does not keep people away from the SkyRock Cafe, it is
a great place no matter what goes on here, there is not arguing, no
egos, not beef between members. So I hope that everyone can put this
behind them and check out the SkyRock at give us a chance, if you do
not like it you do not ever have to go there ever again, but You
should just give us a quick look over, I think you will find it to be
a friendly and full of information and people ready to help you with
all of you questions.

Re: [meteorite-list] The SkyRock Cafe

2008-02-17 Thread Joe Kerchner
Dave,
I am (The SkyRock Cafe is) offering other topics of interest, Also
a forum to ID stones found while hunting, you can show of hunting
finds rites or wrongs, you can ask questions with out being belittled
by people like you. A few members started out on my site and have now
found authentic meteorites, one in Brazil and one in Australia. and a
few in Az. What do you offer? beside talking shit? Many people
compliment me about the SkyRock Cafe, it is only about once every 6
months I have a jack ass like you trying to bring it down. Why would
you even ask me a question like that? We have many active members,
some who are there everyday, many more are there a few times a week.
So if you do not want to join than just stay away, we will not miss
you, One thing that is not aloud on the forum that always goes on here
on the list are people like you who say things which are meant to
disrespect another meteorite collector/hunter, we have a laid back
atmosphere where you do not need to worry about being disrespected by
jerks like you, that is what the SkyRock Cafe offers that the list
does not.

http://illinoismeteorites.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1197773124/0

I just listed it on E-Bay the other day. I think it is a real
coincidence that you post the on the list today, after I just listed
one of the exact things in you post. I have a meteorite with the image
of Elvis on it. I also have one with an image of a womans head. It is
in fact the other half of the Elvis meteorite. The only to face that I
have ever seen very clearly in a meteorite and I get two from the same
stone. These faces are very obvious, at least to me and the people
that I have shown it to.

Here is a link to the E-bay auction:

Good Luck! and I hope that you add this to your collection, it is
after all what you asked for in you message.

Best Wishes,
Joe Kerchner

Hello listees,
Here is a really interesting post at The SkyRock Cafe from Mr.
Randall Greggory, he calls Mr. farmer a phony and accuses farmer of
falsely calling himself a Dr. If I remember correctly he was the fake
Dr. on the list. This is a very lengthy post from Randall, it goes
into great detail of his version of the entire Carancas story from
fall up til today.

Sounds like you found a big one? Care to share? Any photos? Am I just
loony to suggest that you found the big one?
