Hello,

Thanks. The main fires are about a mile from my house, but seem to be
burning themselves out. We have lost about 20 homes in the area and this
fire, because of the high winds, spread fast and furious, destroying
everything in its path. It moved so fast that most folks in the area
barley had time to leave. No deaths that I know of and that is good.

Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers.

Re: [meteorite-list] Point of Diminishing returns (Slice thickness)?

2011-03-07 Thread John L

Michael and All,

A 2mm Ribeye, draped over a 100 watt light bulb for 43 seconds turns out
perfect.
Micheal's words "habitual ways of thinking" may just boil down to (in my
opinion only) a natural transition from a new collector to a more seasoned
collector. When someone decides to begin collecting meteorites, for whatever
reason, and is trying to explain to family and friends about his/her new
venture--it just wouldn't work to show them your newest .006gm micro (this
is an extreme example) and expect them to look at it for more than 20
seconds but when you hand them any iron and EVERY single time they exclaim
"wow that's heavy for it's size"--now you have their interest and they want
to see more and most important they're more prone to listening to you about
your new hobby.

In my circles, i'm trying to get everyone i know to buy the biggest Campo
they can afford and learn & educate yourself. Hopefuly, one of them will,
one day, have the knowledge that you guys/gals have. Everyone starts
somewhere.

Personally, i'm on the side of as aesthetics and given the choice of a 4mm
vs a 2mm, i would probably take the 2mm-if it was a more revealing piece.
My true love is TS's and i have about another 40+ to post to the Eom. To me
it's like looking into the sole of the universe.

Of course, but I do not prefer a thicker slice over a thinner

If you can buy high fat ground beef for $2/lb or excellent

The Ribeye every stinking time.
I believe collectors are STARTING to get the point that
It is NOT the weight that is most important, but the visual
Quality that matters. Every Tucson Show for the last several

I am always amazed that though I am certain the average

While only a collector--(I thank all of you who do hunt) and "right after"

Hi All,

Thanks for the great replies. Speaking about military jets, Kyle ( My
son) and I were on a Nevada Dry lake bed looking for meteorites when a jet
appeared out of nowhere. The F16 had to be 75-100' off the ground and
only 300' to the South of us. The jet then traveled 2-3 miles across the
lake and then shot straight up leaving a trail of dust almost like giant
smoke rings as it disappeared. Even if you don't find meteorites while out
hunting, exciting events like these make it all worth the time.

I can't top the prosthetic leg or the cow suspended on top of a telephone
pole like Sonny found but you can count on strange happenings if you spend
enough time in the desert. One time while climbing a mountain by Area 51,
Dr Ted Bunch, Zann and I were startled by a jet flying below our altitude.
It flew so close to use sideways that I could see the pilots face and
helmet. Needless to say, it was going so fast that we were startled when
it flew by. Luckily, nobody lost their footing. Ted was angry but Zann
and I found it amusing.I have been startled by sonic booms several
times by unseen craft. You can actually feel the sound if this makes
sense. The wildlife never ceases to interest me. It amazing me how tough

also seen giant cat tracks among other things and would not want to run

I found four unlabeled iron meteorite slices in the collection at Arizona
State University. They can be seen at

Aloha Gary,

This year, especially, (as in years past, i'm sure) many people stepped
forward to accomplish several goals at the show--Ruben's efforts (with
others) have probably set a standard for future shows & events which for me
prompts the old proverb.. "E lauhoe mai na wa'a; i ke ka, i ka hoe; i ka
hoe, i ke ka; pae aku i ka aina.

Please, thank the wife for the shirts, everyone loves them (need more).
And, for you and family, every morning.Mahalo ka pua, ua wehe kaiao.

Did you get charged extra for the the malia?

For all of everyone's efforts in hunting, studying, showing and discussing
meteorites (present and past) one could also say.He lawai'a no ke kai

Hi Regine,

because the TNT-equivalent is the most common form to give the measure of
energy released in an explosion.

Big impacts of meteorites release a lot of energy due to the mighty
kinetic

energy the impactors have, while hitting.
In fact there are no such natural events else, where punctually so much
energy is released.

Energy is energy, no matter how it's produced, whether by nuclear fission
or

by an impact of a meteorite.

You could express the energy released in such an explosion also in Joule,
but quite nobody would have an imagination, what let's say 120 Terajoule
should be.
Though if you say, that explosion was so hefty like 2 Hiroshima bombs,
it's

easier to imagine.

Radiation plays no role in or after meteorite impacts.

have there been any cases of mutations or illnesses of animals?

Yes, once a dog in Egypt, a cow in Venezuela and a llama in Peru felt
somewhat ill after a meteorite impact.

Well and else...
I wouldn't call meteorite collectors/dealers/researchers "animals" ;-)

Best!
Martin

Hi all,

can some of you explain to me the similarities of an exploding meteor and
a

nuclear bomb? There seem to be a lot of references and explosive asteroid
events are often measured in Hiroshima bombs to scare the hell out of
people.

I always asked myself the question why that is? Is there not a different
process at work, that of nuclear fission (atom bomb) and fusion (hydrogen
bomb)?

But when considering Tunguska, the aftermath seems to be very similar. I
would like to know more about this: There has been accelerated tree growth
due to the radiation, have there been any cases of mutations or illnesses
of

animals? Is such a radiation as severe as that of a bomb? And what is the
difference / similarity of Tektites and Trinitite?

Regine

Based on your findings I pulled out my slice of Black Onaping, it is
indeed magnetic in certain spots. This is a revelation. I had never
thought to check my impact breccias for magnetic susceptibility. My Grey
Onaping does not react the same way.

Hello List,

It's nearly unanimous, the shatter cone would appear to be exactly
that. I had correspondence with a glacier expert from Univ. of Toronto,
Canada, and he said that I am exactly in line with the direction of
glacial flow from the Sudbury region and it's no surprise that one could
be found here. The specimen matches

visually,
enough I
guess that I can't get an official analyses done, they just have to
look at it and know. It's either from Sudbury
or Wanapitei, which is directly adjacent to Sudbury.

During my small investigation I think I solved another mystery as
well. I have a rock that I thought was possibly a meteorite but it
turns out it might be Black Onaping, also from the Sudbury impact !
Iguess

I'm in a far flung zone of Sudbury material. The possible onaping I
found in a
gravel pit. I should probably investigate more of the many gravel pits
in the area. I do wonder about the metal in the Onaping. Typically, is
there metal in Onaping? The specimen is only lightly attracted to a
magnet and it is the tiny metal pieces that are the source of the
attraction. Really neat stuff!

http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad190/alienrockfarm/Possible%20Black%20Onaping%20Impact%20Breccia%20Sudbury/

Someone emailed me and said that if the shatter cone was authentic, it
is the farthest one ever found from Sudbury. The distance is about 268
miles as the impactite flies

Hello List,

I have this orphan meteorite in my collection and today I decided to
take it to meet Mr. Saw. I was pleasantly surprised with what I found
inside. I'm wondering if anyone cares to ponder it's classification or
say that it looks like one meteorite or another, maybe jar my memory as
to what it is since I'm not real sure where it came from. Of course with
no pedigree I'll most likely have to relegate it to the "I dunno"
category.

I photographed a slice of this under the microscope and it's awesome! I
put some of those pictures on there too. It's worth a look if you like the
close up stuff. (Not like Tom Pillips or anything, let's not get carried
