Re: [meteorite-list] Tumbled meteorites?

I have used ground walnut shells with good success for removing rust. You
may have to go in and remove rust by hand from deep places, but the walnut
shells are great for removing the bulk of it. I bought a bunch in Tucson
one year. The only thing you'll need to watch is how many you tumble at one
time, because the meteorites will collide with each other in the tumbler.
If you are not pressed for time, just do one or two at a time. Good luck.

I have found if you tumble one at a time using walnut shells, not grit, and
keep an eye on them you don't end up with anything shiny, or with rounded
corners, unless they started out that way. Corrosion inhibitor is a good
idea as well.

Dear Museum store and meteorite collectors,
If you like the look of shiny metal chunks with rounded corners
this is great, But when they are done suggest you use some Vapor Phase
Corrosion Inhibitor to prevent rust. Some other person wanted to use
water,(gnaw!) tumble dry. Sieve and use air to blow away rust dust. I

Dear List Members,

I regret to inform you that my talented and amazing husband, David L.

beyond the scope of just loving science. With me he invented many
wonderful educational posters and geolgical study sets that changed the
way people at the sciences, such as astrogeology with our World Impact

As most things are, his work will probably be more esteemed in death

Re: [meteorite-list] Sikhote - stopping rust and preserving

2002-08-01 Thread MuseumStore/NatureSource

Yes, some Sikhotes in Tucson this past year were very heavily treated,
leaving big oil stains in the boxes they were displayed in. They did look
nice, but I'm sure there are many opinions as to whether this treatment
would diminish their desirability or not.

I have cleaned up many Sikhote Alins, and other irons, and have found that a
good way to begin is by using a vibrating rock tumbler with crushed walnut
shells instead of the usual grit. As long as you only do a few at a time to
keep them from banging together, it works well. Sometimes it is necessary
to clean up the deeper pits with a dremel tool, but the walnut shell
treatment saves a lot of time!

My question is in regard to Sikhotes that I've saw being sold in Tucson

The specimens looked exceptionally well preserved.
No trace of rust.
The color was so dark that they look painted.

Does anyone know what process they used to get these super results?

the charge of $188.00 has been credited back to my account!!

The claims person said that she appreciated all
the information and photos I sent, and she wished all claims had supporting
paperwork like that. She also said that the offender has 60 days to submit
a rebuttal, and then added but after they read the letter I sent I doubt
you will have any problem.

Needless to say I am quite relieved and happy
about all this. And I would like to again thank each and every member of

Re: [meteorite-list] More details.... thanks! Got had need help.

2002-05-23 Thread MuseumStore/NatureSource

Hello Al and list,

Yes, this was definitely a wakeup call for me! This seller had a low
feedback rating, and did not appear to be an established meteorite dealer.
As a member of the IMCA, I feel like an idiot for bidding on this auction,
as I look back on it now. But, as they say, hindsight is always 20/20.
Ultimately the responsibility is with the buyer, however I believe that
having good watchdogs out there can only serve to keep fraudulant sellers on
notice that they cannot defraud with immunity!

It's funny because when you think about asking questions about an auction,
you don't think to ask so, IS this what you described? At least that's
how I felt before. Maybe too much faith in humanity! : )I will
definitely be way more picky who I buy from in the future.

As the owner of a retail business for almost 10 years now, another valuable
lesson I've learned is that 99% of the time, it pays to take something back
if a customer is not happy. As long as the item is in resellable
condition there is nothing that cannot be refunded in my store. It's just
good customer relations.

Well, I suppose we will all have to become educated in our own way in that
big wide cyberjungle called Ebay. No matter what happens, I have definitely
gained an education because of this fiasco. Even if I am out $188 now, it
may ultimately have saved me from making a more costly mistake in the
future. We have no way of knowing these things. So, I'll take my lumps if
I have to and go on a little wiser.

It is nice to know though, that there are people out there on this list who
are looking out for all of us and trying to keep this
hobby/passion/livelihood the way it should be. They should be applauded.

Thanks so much for taking the time to address this.

Best wishes,

Hello list,

I have been following this thread which has split into threads now and
would like to
comment on it. I hope I don't come across wrong as that isn't my intention
but merely
to inform. I realize that in Jeannie's case that the items have been
misrepresented as
something they are not. It is also a wake up call to do business with those
dealers
with good reputations and that will stand behind what they sell. Perhaps a
nickel test
should be done on her material.

Ebay auctions state that you are entering into a legal contract with the
seller to buy
that item by placing your bid (see below, taken from ebay auction). So you
should get
information from any seller about what you are buying before you bid on it.
If the
seller states that it is a certain way or metallic and you receive oxide
then I think
that is misrepresentation and your email could be forward to ebay and
negative
feedback left if the seller doesn't make it right with you.

I have seen several posts stating the seller should take the item back if
the bidder
isn't happy with the item or if it isn't like they thought it would be. I
think that a
good reputable seller would do this but unless you asked the right
questions or if the
material is misrepresented, I think as a bidder you are stuck by what is
said in the
statement below made by ebay.

As a seller I want my bidders/customers happy and would rather take
something back
than loose future sells to them. I know many of the good dealers on this
list would
most likely do the same and again it comes back to dealing with a reputable
dealer. As
some have already said let the buyer beware
My best.

--AL

  Ebay says in its auctions:

Your bid is a contract - Place a bid only if you're serious about
buying the item. If you are the winning bidder, you will enter into a
legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller

Hello Harlan,

Cool idea! I have diamond crystals I sell in my store
that may work for you.

1. Tiny octahedral diamond crystals in little glass
vials. These are really small and look kind of like sand, but there are a
lot of them and they look really cool under magnification.

2. Larger cubic diamond crystals about 1/8 each
side. They come in various colors (black, white, orange, yellow) and have
a luster like sugar. They actually look a bit like little sugar
cubes!

3. Larger still intertwined crystals called
macles. They are twisted and lumpy, not what you'd think of straight off
when you think about diamond crystals, but diamonds nonetheless!

Prices for the above range from $20-$90 depending on the
specimen. If this is something that interests you (or anyone else) just
let me know and I will send pix of what you want to see!

[meteorite-list] Identifying tektites

2002-04-05 Thread MuseumStore/NatureSource

We talk a lot about how to recognize meteorites in the field,
and what to look for. What about tektites? Is it just visual cues,
or do they do some other type of test to determine whether something is a
tektite, or obsidian for instance?

Subject: [meteorite-list] laminated periodic element poster

Hi
Got my laminated periodic element poster today from
ww.sciencemall-usa.com - the company was giving a big discount to list
members (I missed the initial announcement, but they emailed me back and
discounted the price)
Really good and eye-catching and accurate too!
anyone else order one? If you didn't then maybe you should! And no, I'm not
on commission!
very best

I have a proof that x^n+y^n=z^n never has integer solutions for n2.
However, it won't fit into my signature file

[meteorite-list] Question on cutting

2002-03-13 Thread MuseumStore/NatureSource

Hi! I have a nice 27 pound Toluca, and
after much angst have decided to have it cut. Can someone refer me to a
reputable person who has handled this type of material before, and/or explain to
me how the whole exchange works?

You can email me off list, or on.

I very much appreciate any feedback from whoever
is willing to take the time.
Regards,

Re: [meteorite-list] Site redesigned and newsletter

Hats off to everyone involved! What a treat to find the newsletter waiting
for me on this cold dark morning! The site looks GREAT, and makes me proud
to belong. Can't wait to see what lies ahead for the IMCA!

[meteorite-list] questions

2002-03-04 Thread MuseumStore/NatureSource

Hi All!

I had someone ask me about a meteorite that
perhaps originated from Mercury, or the orbit of Mercury... She couldn't
remember anything more than that. Anyone have a clue?

Secondly, where can I find information about the
IMCA? I tried searching the archives but with no luck.

Thanks!
