Re: [meteorite-list] Tumbled meteorites?
I have used ground walnut shells with good success for removing rust. You may have to go in and remove rust by hand from deep places, but the walnut shells are great for removing the bulk of it. I bought a bunch in Tucson one year. The only thing you'll need to watch is how many you tumble at one time, because the meteorites will collide with each other in the tumbler. If you are not pressed for time, just do one or two at a time. Good luck. Re: [meteorite-list] Tumbled meteorites?
I have found if you tumble one at a time using walnut shells, not grit, and keep an eye on them you don't end up with anything shiny, or with rounded corners, unless they started out that way. Corrosion inhibitor is a good idea as well. Re: [meteorite-list] Sikhote - stopping rust and preserving
Yes, some Sikhotes in Tucson this past year were very heavily treated, leaving big oil stains in the boxes they were displayed in. They did look nice, but I'm sure there are many opinions as to whether this treatment would diminish their desirability or not. I have cleaned up many Sikhote Alins, and other irons, and have found that a good way to begin is by using a vibrating rock tumbler with crushed walnut shells instead of the usual grit. As long as you only do a few at a time to keep them from banging together, it works well. Sometimes it is necessary to clean up the deeper pits with a dremel tool, but the walnut shell treatment saves a lot of time! [meteorite-list] Ebay shale drama over?!
Hello everyone! I have some happy news to report about the infamous pahanaswife/bubbamisen/j.c.z.inc/homolovi on Ebay. I finally heard back from my credit card company this morning and the charge of $188.00 has been credited back to my account!! :)) The claims person said that she appreciated all the information and photos I sent, and she wished all claims had supporting paperwork like that. She also said that the offender has 60 days to submit a rebuttal, and then added but after they read the letter I sent I doubt you will have any problem. Needless to say I am quite relieved and happy about all this. And I would like to again thank each and every member of this community who offered comments, suggestions, words of wisdom and moral support. In preparing my information for Visa I used many sources and suggestions provided by members of this list. Although thanks are in order to many of you, may I send a special thank you to Ron Hartman for providing me with a wonderful letter, which I believe was the last nail in the coffin so to speak. Hopefully, the next 60 days will be uneventful and this will be the end of it! I'll keep you all posted and thank you again. Re: [meteorite-list] More details.... thanks! Got had need help.
Hello Al and list, Yes, this was definitely a wakeup call for me! This seller had a low feedback rating, and did not appear to be an established meteorite dealer. As a member of the IMCA, I feel like an idiot for bidding on this auction, as I look back on it now. But, as they say, hindsight is always 20/20. Ultimately the responsibility is with the buyer, however I believe that having good watchdogs out there can only serve to keep fraudulant sellers on notice that they cannot defraud with immunity! It's funny because when you think about asking questions about an auction, you don't think to ask so, IS this what you described? At least that's how I felt before. Maybe too much faith in humanity! : )I will definitely be way more picky who I buy from in the future. As the owner of a retail business for almost 10 years now, another valuable lesson I've learned is that 99% of the time, it pays to take something back if a customer is not happy. As long as the item is in resellable condition there is nothing that cannot be refunded in my store. It's just good customer relations. Well, I suppose we will all have to become educated in our own way in that big wide cyberjungle called Ebay. No matter what happens, I have definitely gained an education because of this fiasco. Even if I am out $188 now, it may ultimately have saved me from making a more costly mistake in the future. We have no way of knowing these things. So, I'll take my lumps if I have to and go on a little wiser. It is nice to know though, that there are people out there on this list who are looking out for all of us and trying to keep this hobby/passion/livelihood the way it should be. They should be applauded. Thanks so much for taking the time to address this. Got had need help. Hello list, I have been following this thread which has split into threads now and would like to comment on it. I hope I don't come across wrong as that isn't my intention but merely to inform. I realize that in Jeannie's case that the items have been misrepresented as something they are not. It is also a wake up call to do business with those dealers with good reputations and that will stand behind what they sell. Perhaps a nickel test should be done on her material. Ebay auctions state that you are entering into a legal contract with the seller to buy that item by placing your bid (see below, taken from ebay auction). So you should get information from any seller about what you are buying before you bid on it. If the seller states that it is a certain way or metallic and you receive oxide then I think that is misrepresentation and your email could be forward to ebay and negative feedback left if the seller doesn't make it right with you. I have seen several posts stating the seller should take the item back if the bidder isn't happy with the item or if it isn't like they thought it would be. I think that a good reputable seller would do this but unless you asked the right questions or if the material is misrepresented, I think as a bidder you are stuck by what is said in the statement below made by ebay. As a seller I want my bidders/customers happy and would rather take something back than loose future sells to them. I know many of the good dealers on this list would most likely do the same and again it comes back to dealing with a reputable dealer. As some have already said let the buyer beware My best. --AL Ebay says in its auctions: Your bid is a contract - Place a bid only if you're serious about buying the item. Hello Ken and list, Thanks for all your investigative work Ken! It seems like this seller is not simply misinformed or ignorant, but that they are being blatantly dishonest and selling material as one thing, knowing full well that it is not what they claim. It really is a shame that there are people like this, because it reflects badly on legitimate and reputable dealers, and can scare off new collectors and potential customers. When asked I about the CD meteorites in Feb, I was told the light coloration was from dust as they had not been cleaned. Hello Harlan, Cool idea! I have diamond crystals I sell in my store that may work for you. 1. Tiny octahedral diamond crystals in little glass vials. These are really small and look kind of like sand, but there are a lot of them and they look really cool under magnification. 2. Larger cubic diamond crystals about 1/8 each side. They come in various colors (black, white, orange, yellow) and have a luster like sugar. They actually look a bit like little sugar cubes! 3. Larger still intertwined crystals called macles. They are twisted and lumpy, not what you'd think of straight off when you think about diamond crystals, but diamonds nonetheless! Prices for the above range from $20-$90 depending on the specimen. There is a one paragraph note (p316 of the volume) that reads: ___ Killed by a Meteor -- The South Australian register for April 3 quotes the Littleton Times as stating that as David Meisenthaler, a well-known stockman of Whitestone township, was driving his cows to the barn about daylight a short time ago, he was struck by an aerolite and instantly killed. It appears as if the meteor had come from a direction a little west of south, and fell from an angle of about 60 degrees, for it first passed through a tall maple, cutting the limbs as clean as if it had been a cannon-ball, and then struck him apparently on or under the shoulder, passing clean through him obliquely from below the right shoulder to above the left hip, and buried itself about two feet in the soft black ground. The poor man's head and legs were injured, but the greater part of his body seems to have been crushed into the earth beneath the terrific aerolite, which was about the size of a common patent bucket, and apparently of a rough, round shape.
