Being the local go-to guy the local media calls anytime something happens in

I was surprised at the number of out of town and even out of the country

proving grounds.

I should add that some of those calls were from some very, shall we say,
interesting people. LOL!

But I'd be happy to help with any new searches in any way I can from offering

Will Proof of Extraterrestrial Life Be Revealed at a Ramada Inn?
 Larry Knowles
 AOL News
(Nov. 29) -- A Michigan man claiming to possess an ice meteorite rich in
extraterrestrial organisms will announce in a news conference Tuesday that
alien life, at long last, has been found. The announcement will take place
at a Ramada Inn in South Haven, Mich.

I prayed for Jesus to send me an ice meteorite, because I knew it would be
quite valuable, Duane P. Snyder, 65, said of the chunk of ice he found on a
 South Haven roadway in 2000.

Valuable indeed. For centuries, humankind has sought confirmation that it
isn't alone in the universe. If Snyder's claim is accurate, the South Haven
resident will be catapulted to worldwide fame, and the Ramada Inn, 50 miles
west of Kalamazoo, will likely become an iconic landmark for the human race.

 Duane P. Snyder
E.T. may phone home -- from a Ramada Inn in South Haven, Mich. The red
object above was found embedded in a chunk of ice in 2000. The owner of the
chunk, Duane P. Snyder, believes the squiggle is an alien life form and will
discuss his finding at the Ramada Inn this week.
In March 2000, Snyder noticed several chunks of ice on the road near his
home. Since it hadn't snowed for weeks, he deduced that the ice must have
been an ice meteorite. After gathering up a few pieces and stashing them in
his freezer, he spent the next 10 years trying to convince scientists to
 analyze the frozen mass.

However, Snyder received little interest from the scientific community, and
in September, he paid to have chemical analyses performed by two commercial
laboratories. What the labs found -- that samples contained particles with
unique molecular structures -- convinced Snyder that he indeed had in his
 possession alien life forms.

He has set up a website, snydericyrite.com, where people can purchase the
lab reports and photos of the particles. He's given the particles
descriptive names, such as Red Watani Worm, Six Legged Life Form and
 Clear Snakelike Life Form.

In a phone interview with AOL News, Snyder emphasized that more rigorous
analysis is needed to determine just what sort of alien life form he has,
adding that the prohibitive cost has so far prevented him from getting tests
 done.

I'm hoping some scientist calls and says, 'Hey, Duane, I'll do it for
 you,' Snyder said.

Last week, Snyder took strides toward getting that call. He issued a press
release, under the headline Ice Meteorite Found With Extraterrestrial
Life-Forms, in which he announced Tuesday's news conference.

The release received worldwide distribution and, according to Snyder, media
outlets from Germany, Mexico and Sweden plan to cover the story.

All the attention means that, for a brief moment, the Ramada Inn in South
Haven will be at the center of the world -- or, in this case, universe. And
that has the staff at the Ramada Inn slightly anxious.

We haven't had a chance to speak with Mr. Snyder, Saima Farrukh, director
of operations for the Ramada Inn in South Haven, told AOL News. And we're
all kind of curious to know what kind of life form he has.
Farrukh added that the press release only piqued her curiosity.

It didn't give a lot of info, she said, so I was going through my
chemistry book to find out what the terms mean.

Snyder, a former Air Force mechanic and self-described inventor, spent a
good portion of his life looking for meteorites before stumbling on his
 momentous block of ice.

I'd been hunting meteorites for a long time, he said, and I kept finding
 'meteor-wrongs.'

[meteorite-list] Ram pressure question

2010-11-23 Thread Patrick Wiggins
Hi all,

Could someone please explain what ram pressure is?

Has it got something to do with when air is compressed it heats up so when a
meteor passes through the atmosphere it compresses the air in front of it
causing the air's temperature to rise and it's that heat that ablates all but
the very small meteors?

Many thanks,

patrick
N Utah USA

On 23 Nov 2010, at 15:03, Chris Peterson wrote:

Heating is due to ram pressure for bodies larger than a few millimeters. For
very small particles, ram pressure is not a factor because of the large
distance between air molecules compared with the cross-sectional area. These
small particles do heat up as the result of collisions with molecules, in a
process that is analogous to friction.

In other words, for all bodies that produce meteorites, frictional heating
 effects are insignificant.

 Subject: [meteorite-list] Temperature of meteorites

I was under the impression that it's a myth that direct friction from O and
N molecules on the surface of a meteorite create the heat that causes
ablation. I thought that ram pressure in front of the meteorite was the
main factor in generating heat. The KE and PE would create a hot shock
layer which would flow back around the meteorite causing its outer layer to
melt. I would think that friction is a minor factor, unless you're talking
about ram pressure as a kind of friction.

Re: [meteorite-list] Barringer Meteor Crater (rescanned)

2010-11-22 Thread Patrick Wiggins
First off, many thanks for the many off list comments about my images.

Had I know so many would like them I would have done a better job.

One list member even used software to combine several of the images into
beautiful panoramas.

Now that I know there's interest in such things I went back and rescanned the
slides using a much better scanner. It took a lot longer but I think most of
the rescanned images look better. Somehow the scanner managed to
electronically remove most of the dust and scratches.

Here's the new version:

I've heard that these days folks are not allowed to climb down into the
crater but back then (I'm guessing before lawyers got involved) visitors were
welcome to climb all over the thing so some of my shot were taken from the
 bottom looking up.

[meteorite-list] Barringer Meteor Crater panoramas

2010-11-22 Thread Patrick Wiggins
Apologies for another post on the subject of Meteor Crater but list member Uwe
Figge who lives in Germany just emailed me two very nice panoramas of the
crater that he assembled from my originals.

They were so nice I immediately asked for Uwe's permission and then added them
to my Meteor Crater webpage:

http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/MCAPR73.HTML

The only bad news is that after 37 years I now know I do not have a complete
panorama as I now see that one section is missing (I always thought I had a
complete pan).

Maybe one day I will have to go back to the crater and reshoot that one
section. :)

Sehr gut Uwe!

[meteorite-list] Your opinions please (what is this?)

2010-11-14 Thread Patrick Wiggins
A while back a friend was looking at a piece of land he was thinking of buying
in the Nevada desert located west of Wendover, Nevada.

During his inspection he found a very heavy rock.

When he first showed it to me I thought it was a piece of slag. And I still
kind of think that's what it is.

But he assured me he'd found it far from any buildings, roads, railroads or any
other sign of human habitation. So if it was human made, he wondered how it
got there.

Actually the situation reminds of of the Coke bottle dropped in the bush in the
movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, but that's a different story... :)

At any rate, I ground off a corner of the whatever-it-is, got a picture and
posted it here:

http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/meteorwrong.jpg

Thoughts? Opinions?

Cheers,

patrick

[meteorite-list] Last November's fall over Utah

2010-11-11 Thread Patrick Wiggins
Hi all,

I'm new to the list and have a question about last November's fall over Utah.

I lucked out and saw it from my home. Got to hear it too. I've seen my share
of meteors but that's the first one I was close enough to to hear.

There were a number of videos from many angles so it was pretty easy to
estimate about where it came down.

Alas, all of the evidence pointed to the US government's Dugway Proving Grounds
where folks are discouraged from going.

Still I heard there were people out there looking but I never heard if anyone
found any part of the fall.

Anyone here know if anything was recovered?

Cheers,

patrick
