Subject: [meteorite-list] Opinion needed
Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2005 15:56:44 -0400

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion with a problem I have with a
meteorite dealer. I am returning a slice of Ghubara for a refund. I feel
it was not described adequately. The seller, who is in Finland, wants my
bank account number to directly deposit refund funds. My policy is to
never

give out my bank account number. I have asked for a refund in Internation
Money Order, US check, or US cash. Alternatively, this seller uses a
service in Minnesota called Western Bid, which is where I sent my check
when

I paid for the slice and I suggested that I receive a reinbursement check
from them.

I am 99.9% sure that I will not give out my bank account number but I am
seeking opinions from list members on this. Thanks very much. Has anyone
come across this situation before?

[meteorite-list] Shipping to the UK

2005-03-17 Thread Peanut ..
Hello all,

Has anyone had problems with shipping items to the UK? I can ship small
items like micros, but whenever I ship a larger item to the UK, I get
screwed.

I just shipped an item to the UK and once in the UK, there was an additional
charge of $40+ dollars for the recipient to pick up the item over the $32
bucks he already paid in shipping. The US Postal service said it was a tax
imposed on the item by the UK.

This is more than likely going to be a major loss for me here and it's not
the first time. The last time I shipped a book and it cost me a hundred
bucks!

What's the deal, Nothing against the UK, but this is crazy!

I think that whichever of these two newbies wins this bidding war is going
to be both shocked and
deeply unhappy when they see what a .83 gram, 10 mm piece looks like. At
the moment, they are at
around 370 times the typical price per gram for Campo!

[meteorite-list] Ad ebay meteorites

2004-11-04 Thread Peanut ..
Hello Bern and List,
A Price Guide is exactly what it says, a guide. This does not set the
"Value" at any particular price but it does give you a base to start out.
Perhaps a better "Guide" would be a price guide for classsifications. Just
to give a base price.

Other factors would come into play of course. For example, if El Hammami
were to be listed at $5.00/g these factors would offset that price up or
down. Factors such as rust, slice, fragment, endcut, uncut. You'd probably
pay more for a nice looking polished slice than for a broken uncut fragment
even if they were both at the same weight.

Coins and stamps offer a base price, but I have bought and sold well above
and well below "book value"

I don't agree per say in setting an average price, but a base price. This is
not to set a market, but it allows the market to have something to rise or
fall from. If I found a meteorite tomorrow in a field and I said I wanted
$60,000 for it and was firm, that would be the only way to aquire it. This
is controlling a market, not involving yourself in it.

[meteorite-list] Ad ebay meteorites

2004-11-04 Thread Peanut ..
Hello List,
Mike Farmer said,
"Again, if that is to be the case, then I want EVERYONE to immediately STOP
using my number, NWA 801, and NWA 1929, and others."
- - - NO, Snap out of it! It's not going to happen…. People are still going
to use these numbers which have been assigned to these particular
meteorites. Either as in a description about the meteorite or as a reference
to the meteorite.

"Those are my numbers for specific pieces, and suddenly there are hundreds
of
pieces of NWA 1929 on eBay and at shows, many uncut, and I would like to
know how people think they are paired with my meteorite?"

- - - Are these numbers actually his? I can understand his concern with
uncut pieces without a reference from which they were purchased, but Adam
NEVER made a reference to any numbers belonging to him personally, but to a
particular meteorite or group of meteorites. Also, according to my
understanding, if the numbers were approved "the name will be
internationally accepted" and now he is saying no one can use them because
they are his…. Right!

Pelé Pierre-Marie said,
"why don't we create a catalog of meteorites with official rates (like you
can find for stamps or coins) ?"

…I am in favor of a modified version of this, It's a great idea and it works
for other hobbies such as Coins, Stamps, Tokens and a bunch of others.

"Prices of each popular meteorite should be discussed by the whole meteorite
community on Meteorite List so
that we don't kill the market. Prices would be the average price of all
prices indicated for each meteorite."

…Yes & No….Prices and format should be discussed by the entire meteorite
community. In actually trying to define "Meteorite Community" I'm saying
everyone should be able to cast a vote (Sorry!…) or have a say in
this who has any actual concern. I.e., Dealers (Any size), Collectors,
Museums, Clubs, Labs, Universities & Colleges, etc. Maybe even a website
could be created to allow everyone to enter his or her opinion.

…….As far as the list….Well, there can't even be an agreement on how to
actually use these numbers much less agreeing on a price. Discussion is fine
but not a decision. The final price decision should be made by one entity.
A company or organization or generally accepted text created or expanded on
for this purpose. Such as IMCA, METSOC, Etc, Etc, Etc. Coins have Krause as
their biggie, Stamps have Scott, Ancient Coins have Sear. Personally, I
think the book Meteorites A to Z could expand and fulfill this role!

…….You won't kill the market, you may lower or raise the market though. Only
the interest or lack of from the populace will actually kill the market.

"For NWA or Sahara, it's harder as there are many pairings and all pairings
are not known but on Sahara or NWA authenticated by the NomCom or a
laboratory, the rates could be discussed."

…….Pairings are irrelevant. As Adam pointed out, the pairing should have a
completely different number assigned and that number should be used (Unless
it belongs to Farmer...Sorry Mike, I had to!). Also another thought would be
to go a different route and use variants. They do this in the "Coin & Stamp
World" (Don't have meteorites from there….Sorry again!) A penny from 1909 is
not finite. There is 1909S, 1909VDB, 1909S VDB, Proof, Uncirculated,
Specimen, Etc…. So although NWA 9948 is paired to NWA 59196, it's still NWA
9948. If the paring can be authenticated, which is what I think Mike's point
was, then the paring probably should be noted.

"I hope everyone follows my thoughts. I'm ready to build such a paper book
if everyone (at least every meteorite dealer) works on it ..."

…….We need to talk!
"1 .I think ebay buyers should add systematically (at
least for the NWAs, Sahara serie...) the Meteoritical
Bulletin Abstract of the NWA where is indicated the
official tkw, finder or buyer, some information about
the meteorite and where the buyer on ebay bought the
sample (for example : bought from Adam Hupe) so that
we can track down the meteorite sample.
2. Build a giant database on the web where every
seller records its sales. That would be like a museum
inventory. Each fragment of each NWA would be
numbered, described and recorded and when sold to
someone else the file would be updated so that
everyone knows from whom comes the sample and where it
was sent. But it's a crazy project maybe. And
everyone should work on it."
…….Both violate privacy, should anyone want it, but then why would you want
their meteorites?

Adam said,
"NWA1929 was revised because the three largest stones were left behind and
not reported, all from the same batch. NAU was provided a type sample of
each piece that was left behind and an accurate TKW was reported while under
provisional status"

…….So what are you saying exactly? Should the 3 remaining stones be paired
or not. True, they were obtained at a later time than the "Original" NWA
1929, but if they were confirmed to be from the same batch, then why
co

Hello List,
Does anyone have any information about the Darmstadt Meteorite other than
your basic classification information? I'm very interested in aquiring as

fond of Darmstadt and lived there for 2 years! It's a great place. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. It's been great to see all the
entries, not to mention a load of fun. (Someone even had a calculation

I've had a couple of emails regarding the shipping, should the contest be

Other pages will manifest over time! This site is intended to provide
education for newer people and fun for everyone else. I hope it does both.

I am adding a links page before morning (6am PST) so if anyone would like to

RE: [meteorite-list] shipping costs.

2004-10-01 Thread Peanut ..
Hi All,
Shipping, in my opinion, should be a minimal part of a purchase. I
understand it's an important part, but low shipping and good service will
always bring a customer back for repeat sales. My shipping costs are based
on weight. 95% of all meteorites I sell ship for $1.00 and international
shipping from me rarely tops $2.00.

I consider the costs of the ziploc, the padded envelope, the specimen card
and a little for my time and $2.00 usually covers it. I, like the Hupes also
offer additional shipping options. I can send a package via 1st class or
Airmail for $2.00 or less (Usually) or I can send Priority which is $4.00 or
$5.00 to most Western European countries. (No Priority in most Eastern
European countries yet)

As of today, I haven't had any problems with any Airmail packages getting
"Lost" and I have shipped to countries all over the world.

I sell small pieces mind you, but I still believe the buyer should only pay
the least that is necessary for them to get the item.

Just my thoughts,

[meteorite-list] Numbering Meteorites

2004-09-24 Thread Peanut ..
Hello All,
Back in July, there were posts that touched base on numbering and organizing
personal collections. At the time, I didn't have enough meteorites that
would require the use of numbers. Well, that has changed.

A number of ideas were presented and I was hoping to get a few more. Also
Glenn Huss used a simple system of numbering consisting of the letter H
(Huss?) and numbers. This is a good system.

My question is, Would it be considered "TABOO" to adopt the same or similar
numbering system, realizing it lacks originality, I just figure.. If it
works?

Also, Thanks for all that provided information on SAU001 and NWA 237 and to
those who gave their opinions on my auctions.

I don't understand this:
Adam said: "Using the name NWA 869 is meaningless because like Kem Kem it
has become a catchall stone. I would go as far as to say, you would better
off selling NWA 869 as unclassified because an unclassified stone seems to
be worth more on the open market these days."

sell Dag 476,NWA 3118,3111,3112,1792,1906, 1929 and 1930.
I understand what your saying this stone has become, but why perpetuate this

Hello All and whoever wants to leave,
I just wanted to say that the real shame here is that "somebody" here is
letting this get to them. This is going to happen in ANY forum or mailing
list. this person shouldn't punish or deny themselves the other information
and conversation that is put out on this list.

You want fights, you should subscribe to a coin collecting mailing list. It
makes these two look like best friends! I agree that instead of fighting
over who's been where and how many times, they should both just get on a
plane, fly to some local desert and have it out (Maybe they'll find a new
meteorite while they are there). I have no problem with either parties, I
buy from both and have had good, honest service as far as I can tell. That's
the bottom line.

So just think about that before becoming some in the closet, ebay, meteorite
collecting, hermit. It's really not worth it when you can just delete the
emails you don't wish to read!

Dear Martin and List,
I feel that given the fact that if you break it down to the very basics,
meteorites are rocks! Although they are less common rocks or elusive (Sorry

See Impactika.com) generally prefer rocks after they have been formed into
jewelry. A few can still be found dragging home each and every rock they
find (My Girlfriend) and those are probably more likely to get into
meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tired of keeping my mouth shut

2004-07-21 Thread Peanut ..
Hello Adam and List,
Although my last post met with a few less than positive responses, I feel I
would like to comment.

Now having only been collecting meteorites since Feb of 2004, I'd say I am
still really new at this hobby. I am a born packrat and I have collected
Assay Equipment to Ratfinks and everything in between.

I would have to say this is a somewhat difficult hobby to get involved with
due to the amount of mis-information which Adam has wrote about. Let's take
TKW's, I can go to 3 different web sites and find 3 different numbers.
Prices vary from .99 to 20.00 on the same size pieces. There is no set
market here, although there is a base average. Maybe someday a price guide
will be wrote to regulate this a bit.

As far as honesty in any hobby, this is based on the individual person
buying or selling said meteorite. I bought a meteorite from Adam Hupe and
when I got it, I received exactly what was advertised. However, my first
Canyon Diablo meteorites I bought from another dealer ended up being
Magnetite. I lost money with that dealer and it pissed me off!

Adam's comment:
"It has to stop because it is damaging the core of our favorite hobby and
avocation, meteoritics."

is very true. This is still a newer hobby when you look at something like
coin collecting. We don't want to kill the fun and importance of the hobby
before it really gets started. So I say Go For It Adam!

Dear Dave and List,
The reason I am so upset about fraud is that it directly affects the value
of our collection and takes some of the fun away from the avocation. I
will
give you a few examples:

I recently traded with a well known and somewhat respected dealer. After
analyzing the material he sent I was disappointed to find it was not what
he
reported it to be. When confronted he claimed another well known dealer
sold it to him. I called the other dealer to let him know what he was
distributing was bogus. He said the other dealer made it up. Now, I do not
know which one is telling the truth so I will no longer do business with
either one.

We had yet another well known dealer try to illegally interfere with one of
our auctions by calling the auction house and claiming part ownership in
one
of our specimens even though we paid 100% for the specimen and have had
clear title since the beginning. The only motivation I can see for this is
pure greed and lack of a moral compass.

Total Known Weights, when reported on ebay are inaccurate about 38% of the
time.
Pairings, some of which are not correct, are being made by sight alone with
no scientific input.
Some people continue to sell terrestrial or man-made objects as meteorites
when they know differently.
Meteorites are being sold as main masses when they do not fit the criteria
even when known pairings of greater weight are known. When something is
assigned a different Name or Number even though it is paired does not make
it a main mass.
I am hoping my message will get to those who are committing fraud and help
stop this destructive practice but experience tells me otherwise. I should
not get too much into the negative aspect of this hobby and maybe I should
be pointing out who is, in my opinion, doing an honest job.
All the best,
Adam

[meteorite-list] Matteo War on the list

2004-07-07 Thread Peanut ..
Hello,
I am fairly new to this list and to meteorite collecting in general. I think
a list such as this could be very beneficial to new people to the hobby of
collecting and dealing in meteorites.

Alot of very informative material has come through this list and I'm taking
it in like a sponge. THIS IS WHY THE LIST WAS CREATED RIGHT?

This endless banter regarding Matteo is ridiculous. I get emails in Italian
(No Offense, Matteo, I have nothing against Italians), I waste my time
deleting emails of people dogging each other repeatedly, it's such a waste
of everyone time.

I think Mike Farmer did a good thing by sending the initial warning. This is
where it should lie! Judging from the emails I have read thusfar, it seems
that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is instigating a fight here and it has to stop.

For those who are unaware, Please review the following:
General List Policies
1. Posts need to relate -in some way- to meteorites - Current Emails are not
longer reflecting this
2. Be courteous and professional at all times - Right, SureNOT
3. Do not post -private messages- or -personal attacks- to the list - Not
happening here
4. Please include the 'subject' of the post in the subject box
5. Send emails in text format, not -HTML-
6. Do not send emails with -file attachments- to the list - include a file
link - Not happening here
7. Make sure you can back up statements with -facts and references- - Again
Not happening here
8. Do not post -major advertisement- emails to the list - include a 'sale'
link
9. If you are posting a URL for a sale, include 'SALE' in the subject box

Ok, So could we all please just put the stick down (That means, Stop the
fight, Matteo) and move on to why we are here in the first place. To talk
about METEORITES!

Thank You!
CJ
