Re: [meteorite-list] Dan Wray

2021-11-17 Thread Pete Modreski via Meteorite-list
Thank you so much for the report on Dan's condition, Anne!
Those of us who knew Dan and were there at the NM Mineral Symposium, had heard
Sunday morning that Dan had had "something heart-related" happen and was at a
hospital in Albuquerque, but no one knew anything of the details, nor what his
condition was. We'd had a dinner banquet for the symposium that Saturday
evening, and Dan and Brenda were there then--in fact, I even sat at the table
with them--and at that time Dan had never said one word about having had any
medical issue!
Very glad that he is doing well, and that there were friends and family to
pitch in and help.
Pete

Erin, Dan's daughter, posted this on Facebook.Lets hope Dan gets well very
quickly.
This week took a bit of a turn on its head. Sunday morning my Dad had a heart
attack. He and my mom were out at a mineral symposium they attend every year in
Socorro, New Mexico with the airstream when Dad started having chest pain
Friday night. When he went to the emergency room in the tiny town Sunday
morning, they decided to fly him by helicopter to Albuquerque. Wonderful
friends of my parents drove my mom the hour or so to the Hospital and helped
button down the Airstream, I immediately got on the road and drove the 6.5hrs
to get there (it was faster than I could get a flight there), and my awesome
husband and best friend Brynn, took over things at home so I could leave
quickly. Dad had a stent put in and they determined he had a STEMI, which is
the most severe type of heart attack. Of course, you’d never know it from Dad.
Just hours afterwards, he was very much himself. I think the hardest thing will
be convincing Dad to take it seriously. Ha. He’s doing very well considering
all he went through (and the fact that he waited so long to take himself to the
ER). The doctors and nurses have all been wonderful and he’s been in great
hands. The Dr saw very little damage and is confident his heart will recover
well if he sticks to his cardio rehab and does what he’s supposed to. He was
released today and we got to go have lunch together and take a nice leisurely
walk through the Albuquerque Balloon Museum. My Dad’s brother Chuck is on a
plane here now and will be helping us start the journey home with my car and
the truck and trailer tomorrow. We will be taking it slow, but hopefully we
will all be home soon. Dad’s in great spirits and feeling really good, so
again, the hardest thing will be keeping him slowed down a bit to let his heart
heal. We’re so thankful he’s doing so well. We are so grateful for all the
amazing friends and family we have that have reached out and been so amazing
and helpful. My parents have such a great support system and so do I. So thank
you.

Re: [meteorite-list] Big news

2020-12-13 Thread Pete Modreski via Meteorite-list
Mass extinction researchers have been debating back and forth about the
evidence for periodicity, for decades.  My take is, people who think they ought
to be able to find a periodicity, do find it in their analysis of the data.
Researchers who are skeptical of such a periodicity, find not much of a
correlation in their analysis of the data.  I doubt that this one paper will
settle the matter!
(Thanks for sharing the story!)

[meteorite-list] Fwd: [MSA-talk] Searching high quality photos of Seymchan pallasite meteorite

2017-01-05 Thread Pete Modreski via Meteorite-list
Dear meteorite-list members,

I thought I would forward this request, which I read via the Mineralogical
Society of America's listserv, MSA-talk. Giulio Solferino is looking for
photographs of the Seymchan pallasite for digital image analysis. Perhaps some
of you can help him or suggest sources of suitable images for him.

Best regards,
Pete Modreski

To MSA-talk administrator,
would you possibly post this message to MSA-talk?
Many thanks,
Giulio

--------

Dear All,

I am involved in a project were we are trying to use digital image analysis of
Pallasite meteorites to infer about their origin, and specifically to define
grain growth conditions experienced by olivine. We need high quality photos of
pallasites where both well-rounded olivine grain and olivine fragments are
present within the same sample (usually labelled as 'mixed-type').

After searching through various sources, it seems to us that Seymchan is the
best candidate. There are several slabs of Seymchan that contains rounded
grains and fragments of olivine spaced by no more than a few centimeters. We
would greatly appreciate any suggestion on whom to contact or how to retrieve
high quality photos of Seymchan.

I should add that I have already visited the pallasite collection of Natural
History Museum of London and of Dublin, yet, they do not have a slab of
Seymchan (or any other mixed-type pallasite) that fits our requirements.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Regards,
Giulio

Dear Francesco,

The active ingredient in "Naval Jelly" is phosphoric acid. I see that this can
also be purchased (in the U.S.) as several other commercial cleaning products,
including some simply labeled as "Phosphoric Acid Cleaner". (I am only
verifying what the product is, I do not have any personal experience with what
color meteoric iron will be after using it.)

It certainly got everyone thinking ;-)

If you would like? for the sake of keeping the peace and despite the fact us
Brits widely use orientated I will use oriented.

Just to let you know in advance I use some really bizarre words and if it's in
the English dictionary (UK version) I will use it!

I won't shun you for your choice of words so please don't shun me :-) we are
all different.

A good abstract, but "signs of life" isn't an appropriate title to describe it,
as amino acids can be formed by non-biologic processes, as has been the
interpretation of those previously reported from carbonaceous chondrites.
