[meteorite-list] Meteorite App?
Hi List, Anyone else get this email or heard of this? It is NOT a form letter as in another email he mentions my guitar playing. Looks interesting though. I don't have an IPhone if you do, email me and I'll forward the email with FREE code. I only have one FREE code so the first person that wants to try it will get it and let us all know if it is usefull. Hi Mr Meteorite! We just finished up an iPhone app called Meteorite Hunter and would like to provide you with a free copy. http://www.innerfence.com/howto/redeem-free-promo-code-for-iphone-app-from-iphone-or-itunes Here is a brief description of the app: Meteorite Hunter maps and displays all of the earth's known meteorite and impact crater discoveries (non-Antarctic). Map annotations for each event are added, and the location coordinates plus other information is provided for each event. Simply click on an annotation to bring up the name and exact location of each event. Click on the detail disclosure button to bring up even more information about each event, such as the discovery date, mass, the type of meteorite, etc. Browse the world map and zoom in on strewn fields and impact craters from around the world. Find the most fruitful meteorite hunting areas near you. Add and track your own meteorite discoveries with automatic location detection, and track your current location with respect to an area of interest. Due to the many thousands of known discoveries, the map annotations are grouped until the zoom level is such that the individual locations can be shown. Impact craters are shown with purple annotations. Meteorite discoveries that result from a witnessed fall are shown as green, and discoveries where the fall was not witnessed are shown as red. Hi Tom and all, I understand and totally agree. However, for those that are a lot less shy than me it could be a great tool. Here's why, if you can type, you can make a animated movie, and the first one is free! All you do is type in the words you want your character to say and the program does the rest. My video took me 15 minutes to copy and paste text from my site onto theirs. Then I selected the scene, character, and clicked finish. check out their website here: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/11798674 On 4/17/11, Tom Randall (KB2SMS) tommy2...@hvc.rr.com wrote: Hi Ruben and list! If there are a small number of 100g-ish stones produced, then it wouldn't show up well on radar anyways. So, nice fireball but no Park Forest. [meteorite-list] OK Meteor...
Hi all, I have received many emails and calls asking if I am in Oklahoma, or if anything has been found. Just for the record I am not in Oklahoma and from my “intel” on the ground, nothing has been nothing found yet. Honestly, it seems to me like nothing will be found. Not because the talent on the ground isn't good but simply because no one is quite sure where to look. I thank God for Marc, Rob, and Dirk and all their hard work, but unfortunately, this one doesn't seem to have the clear cut Doppler info like other falls we’ve chased. As a full time meteorite hunter, I personally need more of a WOW factor to justify spending a couple of thousand dollars that it would cost for such a hunt. Of course, all this could change if pieces are found and if (by chance, luck or hard work) they are in the right area they will….. [meteorite-list] Inexpensive Etched Muonionalusta Specimens
Hi all, I am selling one Kilo of cut and etched Muonionalusta Meteorite specimens at my cost - .50 per gram - plus shipping. I want to sell the 1 kilo lot as one lot, but may break into two 500 gram lots or four, 250 gram lots if necessary. I will not sell in anything less than 250 gram lots. This will only happen once so first come first served. They range in size from 3-20 grams perfect for the dealer that likes to sell one at a time. I have sold a few on eBay and they sell really well. Just check my completed auctions to see. All specimens show an etched interior and typical Muonionalusta exterior. I did not etch these but bought many in Tucson this month. If some specimens need to be re-etched. Just mix up a batch of Nitol and etch - no problem. If you don't know how call me and I will help. [meteorite-list] “Where Did We Come From? NOVA Science NOW
Hi, The NOVA ScienceNOW episode entitled “Where Did We Come From? “will air on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Laurence Garvie, Steve Desch and Ruben Garcia will appear with Neil Degrasse Tyson. The episode will begin with Ruben Garcia (Me) leading the hunt for cosmic visitors. Then the cameras will follow Dr. Garvie into his laboratory for classification and lastly Steve Desch will explain the importance of Iron 60 - found in meteorites. It was a cold and windy day and at times we had a hard time seeing a few yards in front of us. The sand storm was so bad that during the shoot that my windshield was ruined as it became pitted from the sandblasting it took. It will be interesting to see what editing was needed to make sense of it all. Back in early December, I was contacted by a self-described amateur weekend meteorite hunter named Del Waterbury. He explained that he had read a post I made to the List in 2002 about the Correo strewnfield, and my August, 2007 Meteorite magazine article, Let's Go, Correo!. He said that he had wanted to hunt there, but was not having much luck in finding any helpful info concerning the details of the strewnfield, such as size or orientation. He very politely asked me if I would mind helping him. How could I refuse? Especially when I was in his place, 16 years ago, when I contacted two veteran Correo hunters, Robert Haag and Steve Schoner, asking them for help with the same questions. As they did for me, I happily shared anything I knew about the site. Del graciously thanked me for my help and said he would send me an email after the hunt with all the details of the result. Well, tonight I received a very nice email from Del. I was thrilled to see that he actually was successful. In only one day of hunting, he found 2 fragments of Correo! The first was a 5 grammer, and very close by, a 2 gram specimen. True to his word, Del sent me photos of his finds, along with his appreciation for my help. That certainly made my day. [meteorite-list] Times for Live Feed of Auction/ Bday Bash/ Blennart Lecture
Hi List, So far all of our tests (video/audio and chat) have been working fine and we THINK we can pull this off. However, we still have not actually attempted to broadcast from either venue (Sky Bar or VFW hall) and so there is still the possibility that some unforeseen problem may prevent us from succeeding. Jim Wooddell and myself will be working most of the day Friday to try and make sure the live feed becomes a reality. Jim is very good at manipulating a low WIFI signal and I assure you that if this works it will be in large part due to his knowledge. Personally, I give us real world odds of about 50/50. [meteorite-list] Attention Tucson Vendors
Hi, I am looking for any vendor in Tucson that wouldn't mind allowing us to test out the live feed sometime Friday or Saturday before the Birthday Bash/ Nininger Awards. It would be nice to have all the kinks worked out before showtime on Saturday Night or the Blood Auction on Sunday. We would just set up a camera (with or without sound) and allow people to see a live feed of the goings on outside the room. Obviously an Internet connection and power is all we would require. Anyone interested? P.S. Here is a thought that could possibly raise money for the IMCA. It seems that we had hundreds of viewers during the first tests last week. Therefore I am also expecting hundreds of viewers during the actual Auction and party. Of course, these viewers may stay watching for a long period of time. Maybe we could charge a small fee for any dealer to have a link (from my Meteorite TV Live link page) to their website/ ebay auctions/ magazine subscription...etc. Any money raised could benefit the IMCA. Hi Bernd and all, Yes, good point. Both the Magazine and Newspaper are fictional items made especially for the movie. However, like the Canyon Diablo there was ONLY ONE newspaper made, so obviously both the paper and meteorite are prominently featured in the film. The Magazine was printed with full permission of the editors of Meteorite Mag and were 6 made (Basically a cover over another Mag - for show only) . This means that I can't guarantee - because I don't know - which one will end up making the cut in the movie. Although I am told by the director that one will definitely appear on film. [meteorite-list] MTV Meteorite Television - TEST - LIVE FEED
Hi all, For the next hour or so I will be testing a live MTV Meteorite Television feed. I want to work out as many kinks as possible before the Tucson Birthday Bash and Auction with Special lecture from John Blennart. Thanks to Jim for thinking of the MTV idea!. As it turns out there are a few ways to view this feed. 1. Click here to see Hopper in my back yard now on my site. http://www.mr-meteorite.net/livevideofeed.htm 2. Go to http://www.ustream.tv/ and search for me MrMeteorite This may be a better choice as there will be live chat on this site now and everytime the feed is run. There should be a streaming video and smooth jazz coming from the feed if all is working. Comments welcome but keep in mind this is by no means perfect (picture may be jumpy, or freeze. occasionally) I will try to correct, but at this late stage in the game we get what we get. Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction
Hi, Eric, I was using WiFi when you viewed the live feed, so if the strength is sufficient it will work. However, a direct connection is better no doubt. We will wait to get confirmation from Mike about internet at the hall and take it from there. If there is none I will try to somehow get a wireless broadband connection. We are too close to fail now! On 1/22/11, Meteorites USA e...@meteoritesusa.com wrote: Ruben, a Broadband connection through Verizon Wireless, or another carrier will work. A direct connection to a 10MBS (or faster) land line broadband connection is ideal. I screamed, NO PAUL, It's a meteorite! After, retreaving the stone he was very happy, and now to have it classified I'm sure he it doubly so! Congrats, to Larry Atkins too! Thanks Larry! I think my ratio of ordinary chondrite meteorites to rare one's is pretty bad. I have exactly 1 rare meteorite (My new meso) to many, many OC finds. Re: [meteorite-list] Tom Phillips Gallery listing on MT and Goodbye Tom
I remember (years ago) when the M-list was the first place I came to when I had a question, an idea or (in the rare occasion) an answer. I remember when I was shocked that everyone I met in the world of meteorites seemed helpful, friendly and intelligent. I long for those days. Especially when I hear that yet another person that had so much to offer was sent packing because of a few with poison pens. Believe it or not there was a time when people like Darryl Pitt, Jim Kriegh, Mike Farmer, Geoff Notkin, Rob Matson were all over this forum. They shared freely to all that would listen to their insight, wit, and experience. It was a time when people respected those that obviously knew more. It’s not that they knew more because they were rocket scientists (well except for Rob, cause he is) More often than not they were well respected because they actually did what the rest of us only dreamed of doing. I admit I don’t know what (specifically) happened to make Tom leave. However, I do know that when we loose someone like him we are probably doing something wrong! It seems now that the inmates are running the asylum. I don’t know how we went from delving into the science of meteorites to exploring the myth of dowsing rods - or why a rare find by someone like Sonny Clary is eclipsed by such rubbish. All I know is this is not fun anymore. Sue me, throw me overboard, or shoot me, I don’t care. If we don’t stop this moronic, pathetic, 3rd grade style chastening of eachother this list wont be worth the cyber paper it’s not written on! P.S. If you click on this link you will see the listing to Tom's Gallery. http://www.meteorite-times.com/meteorite-pictures/ To Everyone: It's truly sad that Tom Phillips is no longer on the m-list, nor will he be sharing his amazing images with us anymore. All Tom wanted to do was share cool beautiful views of meteorites in a way that we would have never seen without him... Below is an email I wrote to Tom. I've removed the name and subject but the involved parties will know. Hi Tom, I've been mulling this around this morning because I don't want meteorite.com or your gallery to be caught up in any controversy... The fact that I've been thinking about this and you're writing me again confirms that we are both on track knowing that these statements will indeed bring us into the conflict. My decision is to just present your wonderful images without the controversy. I'm much to busy to be involved in WWIII. If *** wants statements about ^^^ included then maybe *** can post them. Please let me know your thoughts... Paul Tom was both used and condemned by members of this list who acted a judge, jury and executioner. And what was Tom guilty of? Tom was guilty of being non-political and having the insane notion that we would be interested in seeing images of meteorites with questions. On this Thanksgiving maybe we should all reflect back on all the joy and wonder Tom's images brought us. Thank you Tom for the thousands of hours you spent at eyepiece to bring us those incredible sights. Maybe next time we can walk a few steps in other person's shoes before we impale them with our deadly keystrokes... That said, if you have a good Scanning Electron microscope this can be done with or without a thin section in some cases. The microprobe is an additional tool that tells the Scientist what he or she is looking at as well but in a much more modern and accurate way. Keep in mind Thin sections at one time were all we had until the advent of the SEM Scanning Electron Microprobe. It should be clear what Tom Phillips offers is not and never was intended for classification purposes. He is an artistic genius of sorts and offers us a wonderful perspective of a different World

If for some reason your email message or friend request was thrown out too, I apologize. You can resend it in a day or two or once the mess is cleaned up. - Rock On!
