Re: [meteorite-list] Family Claims MeteoriteFellInTheirCourtyardinIndia
Hello Chris and all, Chris, you point is good. Really. But somehow I have a feeling that all your logic is based on the newspaper's articles. You had been in India for a few days - I got it. Have you been in Russia? If so, where did you meet the scientists? In the church? As for the meteorites, MetBulls from #1(1957) till #49(1970) were printed in Moscow. Here is a link: http://meteoriticalsociety.org/simple_template.cfm?code=pub_bulletin Just a link to think about ;-) All the best to all! Sergey - Sergey Vasiliev U Dalnice 839, Prague 5, 15500 Czech Republic -- http://www.sv-meteorites.com http://impactites.net http://systematic-mineralogy.com Hi Svend- I think it relates to cultural differences, which are real if somewhat politically incorrect to acknowledge. Russia has a long history of accepting pseudoscience inside its mainstream scientific and educational communities- something that continues to this day. Research into paranormal phenomena, bizarre medical theories, astrology, and the like is carried out by workers at universities to this day. This carries on a tradition dating back to Lysenko, arguably Velikovsky (who left Russia but was the product of a Russian education), and much of the Russian research into Tunguska. Many scientists in Russia recognize that this is a huge problem facing their science system as a whole- that not only is the public unable to distinguish between science and pseudoscience, but neither can many formal educational institutions. My own extensive experience with Indian scientists suggests that many seem to have rather odd ideas that are not consistent with science, although that does not in general prevent them from carrying out high quality scientific work. I've also seen a lack of recognition in the public for the concept of scientific specialties- so that anybody branded a scientist, regardless of field, may be taken as an expert in any scientific matter. I expect something like that is what happens with these exceedingly poor meteor/meteorite reports we see coming out of India. Of course, such things happen in all countries, but seem to be more common in some than in others. While I strongly doubt that anywhere near half the U.S. population believes in a young Earth, it is certainly too many. But the quality of science in the U.S. is very high- the best in the world IMO. Pseudoscience or simply bad science is not tolerated in the scientific community. Furthermore, even amongst the general public, there seems to be an understanding of what makes an expert credible, and unscientific beliefs are largely kept separate from scientific beliefs. While the lack of scientific knowledge (and credulity and skepticism in general) is woefully poor in the U.S., the situation appears to me quite different from what is seen in Russia or India. As an example of how cultural differences can affect pseudoscientific beliefs, you can look to Creation Science/Intelligent Design in the U.S. (which is universally viewed as pseudoscience in the scientific community, but not by a significant percentage of the public), or homeopathy in much of Europe, which is not only accepted as valid by a large part of the public, but receives state funds for research and for public health. But these things have much narrower scope than what is seen in some countries. I wouldn't say that I look down on India or Russia, simply that I recognize a reality in their scientific systems and scientific philosophy. It means I may scrutinize a paper coming from Russia closer than I would one coming from the U.S. My earlier comment about not a single scientist in India was (I hope) obviously hyperbole, but I do think that way too many scientists there are quick to give absurdly incorrect information, and way too many journalists are quick to print it... far more of either than we find in the U.S. or western Europe. Anyway, enough said. Agree or disagree... it isn't my intent to start a big argument. I think we can all agree that certain areas of the world produce particularly poor meteor/meteorite reports (and sometimes, a complete lack of follow-up), regardless of the underlying reason. You mean like countries where creationist theme parks attract the crowds and where nearly half the population believes the earth is less than 1 years old? I say there is no reason to look down on India or Russia in this regard. Svend

Hello Martin, Mark and List, I looked at Russian version of Y.I.Simashko, Cat. Meteorites, St.Pétersbourg, 1891 and he wrote that the second stone was broken by finder into parts and given to the locals. RE: [meteorite-list] scanner and hexahedrite vs camera and hexaedrite
Alex, You are right saying that you have to have the slice in front of you. The basic picture I just did with my camera is: http://sv-meteorites.iol.cz/boguslavka_1.jpg But... I posted the scanned image because it shows much more details than you can see while looking at the slice itself. To see the details you have to turn it here-there, left-right. You know what I mean. But the scanner showed me a view I couldn't get with the slice in my hands. That was the point. Best regards, Sergey -Original Message- From: Alexander Seidel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 5:55 PM To: Andreas Gren; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: AW: [meteorite-list] scanner and hexahedrite vs camera and hexaedrite Thanks a bunch Andi for showing these pics, and I´m very much looking forward to receiving your prepared slice, which will be my very own share of Boguslavka, soon. Hexahedrites are no easy task for a photographer or a scanner, not even if you discuss a specimen right in front of you, in person so to say. I had the great pleasure of meeting Andi a couple of weeks ago in Hamburg and handed him my 34.8 g slice of Guadalupe y Calvo for inspection. I must admit he was more skilled than me to point me to those tiny lines in between an otherwise rather bare polished suface which were not due to scratches or something evil like that, but were in fact: Neumann lines! Quite hidden in this case, but present nonetheless! Sometimes you have to look really closely, and sometimes a photograph or scanner pic won´t do the specimen in front of you justice. P.S.: sorry Sergey, I had simply overlooked your scale figures at the bottom and left side of your beautiful pic! Just kidding and ADing. ;-) Best regards to everyone, Sergey Yes, it sold out quickly at $100.00 per gram. The most memorable event was at the Gifhorn show in Germany. RE: [meteorite-list] Call for Photos
Hello Michael and All, I'm one of 3 Serges ;-) Mike, Good idea (for me)! I just started a new poll at my web site to see what other people think about it. So let's see. Anyway, Mike, I can offer you my help. This is a time consuming thing to update an html page every time when you will receive a new image. I can make a simple website where people will upload their faces and names by them selves. I can make it in a few days and can host it on my server. Of course it will state something like Michael Blood's faces collection ;-))) or whatever you want (you brought this idea up even that I was thinking about it also). What do you think? Vote! www.sv-meteorites.com (on the left side below the main menu). All the best, Sergey Hi all, I am in the process of putting together a METEORITE FRIENDS web page. Now, the fact is, there are only about 3 meteorite collectors or dealers I have ever encountered I don't consider a friend. I have several collector friends that have never bought from me, so, it doesn't mean customer - and I don't care whether you are the world's largest dealer or only sold one meteorite on eBay once upon a time. One of the purposes of this METEORITE FRIENDS page is to provide a face with the name for people in the meteorite community, so, if you don't go to Tucson, or, when you did/do you miss/ed half the people you have heard of, etc, you can actually look them up and see their handsome (or in a few cases, beautiful) mug. I was going to just make it random, but then it occurred to me that eventually it would probably be used as a reference, so, I will probably put it in alphabetical order - either by first name or last - probably first, so as to make things easier. In any event, the point is, I would really like it if you ALL would email me a JPG as an attachment (not some other method - people seam to always be able to find some way of sending me photos that doesn't work. Just attach a JPG - or, much better, SEVERAL jpgs of yourself - or, in the case of couples - of both of you to allow me to choose the one I deem most flattering and realistic. It would be fun to do a meteorite Jib-Jab thingy, but I ain't that gifted - nor do I have the time. However, I do think it would be fun to have a huge collection of all our faces to go with our names. Please RSVP to me directly. All you non-Americans are VERY MUCH invited to participate - I wanna see at least 3 Serges up there (ya, I know my spelling sucks - sorry) Of course, if you, for some ego trip or super sleuth motivation do not want anyone to know what you look like, to bad, you don't get to play. Please do not forget to mention your first and last name. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1) I am spelling impaired and 2) because of that same disability, I forget names like you wouldn't believe (most people do not believe I once forgot my own name - albeit very briefly). So, don't hesitate, pull out all them JPGs of yourself and send 'm in to Uncle Mikie and before the next ice age I will get a page up any and all can enjoy. [meteorite-list] Sikhote-Alin question
Hello List, It was a request yesterday about English subtitles for Sikhote-Alin movie. I decided to play a little bit here. So I created some subtitles for a part of the movie. I cut the end of the movie and kept the only part with field works. I want you not to judge me so much because that was my first experience with this software. I translated sentence by sentence from the voice behind the screen. I also used an online translator from Russian to English. It paid off as long as I wanted to do this job fast to see if I'm able to create something like that. Of course I modified sentences but not all of them and not perfect. Actually I can't modify them perfect as long as my own English is far away from perfect ;-) Also for some reason the software changed the size of the file (and screen resolution) so now the file is about 70Mb (was 56Mb) and instead of actual 320x240 I have 640x480. You can switch your player to 50% view and it will be the same quality as original (I guess ;-)). One more time: that was my first try with this software and correction of video files at all. I played for 9 hours but I can see now that I can do it! That was a fun for me yesterday! If somebody thinks that I should try more and keep translating the rest of the movie (some nice meteorites from great collection of Russian academy of sciences are showing on the end of it without translation) I can find some time later to do this. But I think that first part must be re-done to be more readable. If somebody has an interest to help me with this please send me your thoughts of how subtitles must be written. I will try to get the file back to the original resolution later also. That should reduce the size of the file. The file is in the same format as it was (.wmv). The movie with subtitles is ready for download here: http://sv-meteorites.jodoshared.com/movie/SikhoteAlin_Short.WMV Enjoy! Hi Sterling and List, You just got a nice virus (viruses shouldn't be always bad, aren't they?) which killed five copies of the same code! ;-) Or may be it's just a nice code on your server which wants to keep (just in case ;-)) all you incoming and outgoing mails but doesn't want to store the duplicated info? (That's just about living in a communist state from proud person who did live in. Proud because I don't have to turn on my imagination to understand what it means). QA (see below): I always thought that H. sapiens means something else than numbers of cells. Just H. probably ;-) Anyway for that subject (SALE) please stop the bashing I can see 6 copies from Steve and 9 from the others. Who is spammer? ;-) All the best! MetList reader, Sergey Q: What percentage of the living cells in your body are YOUR cells, and what percentage are members of a species other than H. sapiens you? A: Nearly 95% of the living cells in your body are NOT you. Fortunately, your 5% outweighs the aliens and you are killing them as fast as you can. So all is well. I can assure you I don't have any germs... Guess again, but don't turn into Howard Hughes. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Sterling K. If he had SENT six copies, we ALL would have gotten six copies, or no copies, if things were screwed up. So before we have a 31-message thread on The Six Copies, I'm pretty sure he didn't send six copies to the List, OK? It does happen spontaneously sometimes. There is a particular virus that does this, but it been so long since I was infested with it that I forget its name. I would receive multiple copies of an email and message the sender, why are you sending all these copies? and discover that they weren't! In my case, the virus was in my machine, that is, the computer receiving the multiple copies, so those who are receiving multiple copies might want to check their perimeter defenses, so to speak... If you're foolish enough to use Outlook Express, it won't do any good, but you should check anyway. Dear Listers, I'm sorry if it is off topic but I know that several list members were subscribers of our mailing list (at www.sv-meteorites.com) and that's the only way for me to send this information to them. Also the latest Guest Book comments are lost, Weekly Polls are lost and the latest subscribers to our Mailing List are lost. Please re-subscribe to stay up to date with our website changes. Hi Mark and List, Mark, please note that this article was from mass-media (Am I right in spelling?). If you want I can translate the article about myselffrom Ukrainian newspaper. Sergey -Sergey VasilievU Dalnice 839Prague 5, 15500Czech Republicwww.sv-meteorites.com Hi Walter and List Maybe this is something the IMCA can help with along with the meteoritical society, we could supply the institues around the world with the names and contacts of those poeple willing to be known by such places. Even photographs. In this way the institues would have a record of known researchers, dealers and collectors in an electronic format thats easy to access. This would hamper some of these thefts, surely wouldn't stop them, but at least it would give the institues something to work from and maybe make easier these trades for research. Although I doubt I will ever get to most of these places, it would be nice to know that the curators would be able to tell who I was from someone else posing as me. And, this would be an easy enough project, much easier than trying to track down and bring to justice the black marketeers. Mark - Original Message - From: Walter Branch To: Meteorite Mailing List Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2004 11:32 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] Page Translated Hello Everyone, Many thanks to Sergey Vasiliev, who translated the page for me and has given me permission to post his translation to the list. ... In 1991 in Australia was found 350 grams ureilite Nullarbor 010. 1 gram of it was sent to Max Plank Institute for analysis. The rest was lost. Two years later "well known cheater" Ron Farrell said the new meteorite was found. That was also ureilite with the only weight of 349 grams. Farrell said that it was found in Mexico. Meteorite got the name Nuevo Mercurio (b). Two stones (1g from australia and another from Mexico) had suspected the same structure, texture and composition. Most of scientiststhought that there are two pieces of the same stone. That story is not the best of Farrell's stories. In 1995 that man showed up in Egypt museum. He said that he is from Yale University and he would like to get two museum specimens (both from Mars)for detail study - the price for both is more than two million dollars. He had luck to get those stones. Finally the Egyptian authorities found out that theman with name Farrell is not working in Yale and never did. Something like: Meteorite business is so profitable that those kind of fraudshad been done[sorry butmy Czech is not perfect also ;-)]Only for the last three years there were six "martian" meteorites (all from privat collections) recognized as Eath basalts. Something like: The thiefs doesn't care about it. [I have no idea why this sentense is here but it is also translation from another sourse - one of those: CA M`INTÉRESSE Paris; FOCUS, London]. For the same period of time that was reported 128 stolen meteorites. On the Paris meteorite exhibition in 1996 two meteorites were stolen: one from Mars and one from Moon. The one from the moon belongs to National Institute of Polar Research (Tokyo). Something like: Farrell also tryed to get a piece like that. In 1997 he went to Rio de Janeiro National Museum where he tryed to exchange small meteorite (priced at $29,000) for the Eath rock. He was catched at the airport. Stolen meteorite was in his boot. That isa funny one: And even he was judged for two years in jail, he got a chance to escape and now he is hiding somewhere. That's it.
