[meteorite-list] Another in the curious tektite series
I always enjoy the irregular shapes in tektites because the standard dumbbells, teardrops and spheroids are exactly that, standard. This is a 5 cm irregular or fragment-form Australasian tektite from Viet Nam with what appears to have smeared indentations from low speed contact(s), presumedly with other equally soft-skinned tektites. This is problematic because the through-body re-heating above glass temperature and plastic deformation don’t happen with aerodynamic heating and ablation. At the very least the skin of this tektite seems to have been reheated after solidification, retaining fine surface texture outside of the smear channels. If this is ascent-phase after solidification, that is a large displacement from the source location for collision with multiple other tektites. If this is descent-phase, why are tektites on converging trajectories after the better part of an hour or more to solidify before reentry? The highly ‘platy' coarse morphology relative to any spheroidal protomorph makes the formative process quite puzzling. When the Indochina region is considered as probable source for this distal impact ejecta glass, it directly disagrees with a first principles suborbital analysis of ablated tektites, which shows the source region must like across eastern North America per Harris (2022) and Davias, Harris (2022). https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FqenhEGuGrY <https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FqenhEGuGrY> Thomas “Tim” Harris Email: thsharr...@icloud.com <mailto:thsharr...@icloud.com> Engineering Scientist Brooklyn NY USA 718 344 6016 Web: Google Scholar T. The question is: Which achondrites have creation ages of 3.23 billion to 3.47 billion years ? Perhaps we have material from this event among our collections. The collision punches a crater into the planet's crust that's nearly 500 kilometers (about 300 miles) across: greater than the distance from Washington, D.C. to New York City, and up to two and a half times larger in diameter than the hole formed by the dinosaur-killing asteroid. Seismic waves bigger than any recorded earthquakes shake the planet for about half an hour at any one location - about six times longer than the huge earthquake that struck Japan three years ago. The impact also sets off tsunamis many times deeper than the one that followed the Japanese quake. Although scientists had previously hypothesized enormous ancient impacts, much greater than the one that may have eliminated the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, now a new study reveals the power and scale of a cataclysmic event some 3.26 billion years ago which is thought to have created geological features found in a South African region known as the Barberton greenstone belt. The research has been accepted for publication in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union. The huge impactor - between 37 and 58 kilometers (23 to 36 miles) wide - collided with the planet at 20 kilometers per second (12 miles per second). The jolt, bigger than a 10.8 magnitude earthquake, propelled seismic waves hundreds of kilometers through the Earth, breaking rocks and setting off other large earthquakes. Tsunamis thousands of meters deep - far bigger than recent tsunamis generated by earthquakes - swept across the oceans that covered most of the Earth at that time. We knew it was big, but we didn't know how big, Donald Lowe, a geologist at Stanford University and a co-author of the study, said of the asteroid. [Graphic] A graphical representation of the size of the asteroid thought to have killed the dinosaurs, and the crater it created, compared to an asteroid thought to have hit the Earth 3.26 billion years ago and the size of the crater it may have generated. A new study reveals the power and scale of the event some 3.26 billion years ago which scientists think created geological features found in a South African region known as the Barberton greenstone belt. Credit: American Geophysical Union Lowe, who discovered telltale rock formations in the Barberton greenstone a decade ago, thought their structure smacked of an asteroid impact. The new research models for the first time how big the asteroid was and the effect it had on the planet, including the possible initiation of a more modern plate tectonic system that is seen in the region, according to Lowe. The study marks the first time scientists have mapped in this way an impact that occurred more than 3 billion years ago, Lowe added, and is likely one of the first times anyone has modeled any impact that occurred during this period of the Earth's evolution. The impact would have been catastrophic to the surface environment. The smaller, dino-killing asteroid crash is estimated to have released more than a billion times more energy than the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The more ancient hit now coming to light would have released much more energy, experts said. The sky would have become red hot, the atmosphere would have been filled with dust and the tops of oceans would have boiled, the researchers said. The impact sent vaporized rock into the atmosphere, which encircled the globe and condensed into liquid droplets before solidifying and falling to the surface, according to the researchers. The impact may have been one of dozens of huge asteroids that scientists think hit the Earth during the tail end of the Late Heavy Bombardment period, a major period of impacts that occurred early in the Earth's history - around 3 billion to 4 billion years ago. Many of the sites where these asteroids landed were destroyed by erosion, movement of the Earth's crust and other forces

[meteorite-list] New fall in Germany 1.3kg Braunschweig
Hi list, there is a new fall in Germany, which I think was not posted yet in our list. (intense discussions in German met. forum) Some few facts: Ordinary chondrite (L6), still under classification. Fall in 23 or 24 April-2013 , ~2am local time. Only one eye-witness which saw the end of the bolide and heard one detonation later. One ear-witness who heard the bang on the ground while he was watching TV. Only one poor picture is available from a meteor camera due to a very cloudy night. 1.3kg fell directly into a parking place of a private house, hundreds of broken pieces scattered around, also to the road. Some were pulverised by cars. Fortunately most of them were recovered, by quick reaction of Rainer Bartoschewitz. Second larger piece (left one from picture 2) is now exhibited in Ries Crater museum, at least until Sept. 2013 (214,1 g major piece). The individual meteorite demaged the paving stones. (=hammer fall?) The recovery of the paving stones around the striking hole failed due to a complete structure change caused by the impact. (Their collapsed to sand grains, which was first not visible on the paving stones. There is a breathtaking picture of this in the museum) The nose cone-shape of the individual was reconstructed (inteligent guessing) by Karl Wimmer and shows that probably more individuals separeted from the main mass. (map with best estimation for a strewn field is available. So far no further finds known) Enjoy: http://www.braunschweiger-zeitung.de/lokales/Braunschweig/meteorit-fiel-in-braunschweig-vom-himmel-id990080.html See some of you soon in Ensisheim, Regards from Weil der Stadt, (birth town of Johannes Kepler) Thomas Kurtz __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi folks, Just my input about stones from Turkey. Recently the highest police officer from the canton of Valais in Switzerland was arrested in Turkey (carrying a stone most probably a piece of an ancient temple) when return from family holidays. I'm glad that I'm not working for our Consulate in Turkey otherwise cases like this one means a lot of overtime work and maybe prison visits included. Anyway, the arrests of tourists having picked up a stone from the beach are always also a part of a political game. From the Rep. of Germany for instance, they want to have back that stuff: http://www.geo.de/reisen/community/bild/regular/220723/Pergamon-Altar.jpg (Btw. one important reason for not declaring meteorites to be cultural heritage. [meteorite-list] To extend asteroid-surveillance near to suns direction -Chelyabinsk meteoroid
Hello Ron, hi list, the Chelyabinsk 15-17m meteoroid was coming just ~15° from suns direction. Is there any space craft planned for incoming asteroid-surveillance near to the sun ? (Earth as the point of view) Which orbit would be the most effective to cover this space area ? How many of those satellites are needed to cover most of this dangerous area ? Which studies do already exist for such a mission ? Who is working on realization ? In the future, even if we would discover such an impactor few hours before entering the atmosphere (like TC3 asteroid in 2008), warnings to the people near impact side could prevent a lot of injuries. Kevin, Hilarious! I think I need a box of that wine! Thomas --- On Wed, 1/9/13, Kevin Kichinka mars...@gmail.com wrote: From: Kevin Kichinka mars...@gmail.com Subject: [meteorite-list] A 'Find' of Another Kind - the Vote is In! To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 12:35 AM Team Meteorite: The wind is howling to the stars on a chilly (22*C/72F) night here on the central plateau of Costa Rica. Thanks to the miracle of modern refrigeration, I've just utilized the 'last breast' from Thanksgiving to make Turkey Chowder for dinner. As a single guy living alone, there's probably some symbolism there. To work off the enzymes and growth hormones knowingly consumed in that last breast, I stepped out on my patio with a glass of Chilean wine I poured out of a box. The second I opened the door, the choir of crickets cut off their chorus. Hey, it's just me. Sing on! I requested in Spanish. Bueno. Chirp, chirp, chirp cantaban los grillos. Even the insects are friendly here. I like it. While wishing with all my might that Steve of Chicago can find a partner to exchange a Gao with sexual orientation, flow lips and a rollover line for a copy of THE Bob Haag's Catalogue from 1985 (and hoping, too, that the prices are 'still in effect'), I pondered the good Dr. Jeff Grossman's work to refine a 'fall', going where no man has gone before. Pull the tab-top off of your box of wine and join me under the windy stars while I review how this played out on the m-list, what was until now the uncontested definition of a meteorite 'fall'. Hey, hey. This is a classy discussion. I know its poured from a box, but no Dixie cups, OK? Only 'Glass' glass. First the gauntlet was thrown. Note the conviction of Jeff's opening three word volley In all seriousness ... I have considered refining, or at least qualifying the definition of fall. The categories I've considered are these, and the definitions are first passes: Observed fall: observed to fall, either visually or with instruments, and collected soon after the event. The event was well documented. Physical evidence associated with the collected meteorites is consistent with a fresh fall, or, when collection does not occur immediately, directly points to a fall at the time of the observed event. Unobserved fall: No observations were made of a fall event, but physical evidence conclusively points to a fall on a specific date or within a very narrow range of dates. Probable fall: In these cases, there was a well-documented meteor event with characteristics consistent with a meteorite fall, followed by the collection of meteorites some time later. There is a strong likelihood that the meteorite fell in the observed event, but physical evidence is not fully conclusive. Possible fall: The same situation as a probable fall, but there is significant doubt about whether the meteorite is connected to the event or about the reliability of the observations of the event. Doubtful fall: The same situation as a possible fall, but there is a high degree of doubt. This was all suggested by the circumstances surrounding the Bene(a) and (b) meteorites, which I would have put in the possible fall category, if such a thing existed. Jeff *** Ships may pass quietly in the night, but the list threw anchor on this one and prepared to send broadsides. The esteemed and most respected Anne M. Black (is it true that the 'M' stands for 'meteorite'?) came down on the 'logical side' and supported Jeff's new terminology. The Most Excellent Paul Swartz put on the same uniform and ran a lap for the team. But Michael Farmer fired the first volley - I find this new attempt to change terminology disturbing. I have hundreds of old catalogs from the top museums and dealers from more than 200 years ago till today, all of them list falls and finds. None of them discuss unobserved falls as an acceptable alternative. Are we really ready to just accept anything thrown out there, and watch as all manner of BS is used to discredit hundreds of years of accepted terminology? Adding Any label I get describing a meteorite as an unobserved fall will be promptly thrown where it belongs, in the trash heap of schemes and scams. Well into his second box of red, Jim Wooddell exclaimed in support, I don't often agree with Michael Farmer, but when I do, I am drinking! Stay thirsty my friends! Good advice, Jim! John Cabassi sees no reason to change. Bill Kies came up with his best contribution ever when he explained If all finds are falls and all falls are finds, even though all falls haven't been found and all finds have been found, a fall has to be found before it becomes a fall or a find, but a find is just a find
[meteorite-list] Find, Fall Terminology
All, The terms find and fall are concise and understood by everyone in the meteorite community. I don't see the need to introduce terms that may lead to more ambiguity. For example: if find is changed to unobserved fall in describing a meteorite it could possibly be an outright false statement since it could have been observed by many people but never reported or recorded. Also, do we include other animals when we refer to observed? Who knows who or what observed one of those that we call find, so let's just leave it at that and continue to call it a find. The term fall as it is now used means that we have a pretty good record that someone actually saw it streak through the atmosphere and recoveries were soon made in the projected fall area. In some cases people have witnessed the actual impact or impacts as they happened but this is not required to call it a fall. Occasionally it may be years before a witnessed event produces recovered meteorites but if we know the fall area we can tie it to the event and still call it a probable fall and end up using just fall with a fairly high degree of accuracy. For practicality and to tie in with what has been used and understood for years, I think we should continue to use the terms find and fall. It doesn't attract to a neodymium magnet at all, none, but I do think it may be a weathered chondrite. It certainly is oriented and the flow lines are obvious. I'd like to take a peak inside but haven't been able to decide how to go about it yet. It weighs around a kilo, just guessing. http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad190/alienrockfarm/New%20Find%20March%201%202012/ I hope all are well, happy hunting! Hi all, I sorted out my stock and my collection because I move to another home in August. I found a beautiful piece of Bensour which weighs 74.45 g. It's composed by the main meteorite weighing 64.93 g, a fragment weighing 9.29 g and small crumbs in a membrane box. It's a piece collected just after the fall and which did not receive a rain. The big fragment fits perfectly the main meteorite. The price is $500 with free shipping (Paypal). A special thanks to John Blennert for giving us a wonderful insight on hunting the Gold Basin strewnfield. If it wasn't for John I probably still wouldn't know what a meteorite looks like! Thanks to Michael Blood for a great auction. Everyone enjoys the auction and the camaraderie. Twink's Gold Basin cake was delicious. Arizona Keith and Gary Fujihara were excellent at capturing the pictures and getting them online for everyone. The weather started out very cold but today it is 70 degrees at 5PM. If any of you get a chance you should check out Geoff Notkin's new meteorite hunting book. Another must have for your collection. Canyon of the Vaginas may not be the correct name either. Robbins made it clear that he was aware of the potential for abuse at these sights so he may have altered the name to help protect the place, or may have simply created a name that he thought was more humorous. [meteorite-list] Secret BLM maps ?
Last week I was walking along a dry lake bed and looked up to see the inevitable white truck parked next to mine. I walked back and had a nice talk with a BLM officer. He was concerned that we were picking up artifacts, which we were not. My wife mentioned that we were going to look for some petroglyphs and asked him about the roads in that area. No Mam, he says. We can't tell you anything about locations. In fact there are many more petroglyphs and over a hundred caves that are not on your maps and we can't tell you anything about. Which makes me think that these locations must be a matter of record somewhere. Does the BLM have secret maps not available to the public? I apologize that I have been away off the list for a long time. The reason is I decided to fulfill a long awaited dream of mine and create a website dedicated to meteorites and astronomy. I spent about a year and almost 2000 hours researching to put this together and ended up to be much longer then I anticipated. For those who know me I wanted to do it right and do not like to cut corners. This site is dedicated on my daughters birthday today, but is for all of you collectors out there and especially for those new to the field. There is no site like it in the world in my opinion. My eBay Info page will help many newbie's to the hobby and many of you will agree after viewing it, that it was about time something so detailed came along, which will help many new and veteran collectors. Though I have not listed any meteorites as of yet (shooting for first of the year) on my meteorite sales page, my format will be different then most of the dealers and sellers who already sell on their sites. I will not have the variety like they do. My plan is to only put up several type each couple of months. Those meteorites will be the rarest of the rare and hardest to acquire and or most historical. I posted about 5 months ago on my intentions of this website which is called Cosmic Treasures Celestial Wonders and wanted to thank those that contacted me with what I needed. I hope you will take the time to look over my site as it is very educational and the resources and tools will hopefully put me in your favorites! I designed this site for the new astronomer and new meteorite collector by using the many years I have involved with astronomy and meteorites and from the lessons I have learned. I hope my experience will suffice to all of you out there. Please feel free to pass my site along to those who you feel will gain from it. Hope you enjoy it and glad to finally have time to get back to the real world! My site address is below. Cosmic Treasures Celestial Wonders www.ctreasurescwonders.com Thank you. Re: [meteorite-list] Matters Arising
Elizabeth, Thank you for your defense of us who live in Southern USA. I still feel a little touchy about a discussion that occurred on the list several years ago, soon after I joined, in which those of us who live in Southern USA were made fun of, and to compound it, one of those who made the most disparaging remarks works for a governmental agency and is being paid with our tax dollars! The terms hicks and rednecks do not neccessarily equate with unintelligent. Some of the best thinkers I know of have been, at times, referred to in this manner by some people from our northern states. I'm sure constitutional attorney Sam Ervin who referred to himself as just a country lawyer is one of them (he lived in a town about 30 miles from me). I think it's unfortunate that Peter used these terms to express his displeasure with the gun photos while I defend his right to show displeasure. I live in an area of NC largely settled by Scottish Highlanders and where we have the best Highland Games in the country. I would invite Peter and all of you to come this year, the second week in July. I think the photos were all in fun but in retrospect those involved probably wish they had kept them private. I will mention another term, meteorite, just to keep this legal for the list :). I don't know the individuals involved on either side of this discussion. But not all gun owners are irresponsible. As I'm sure not all Scots are arrogant drunkards. (See stereotyping can go both ways!) And while I was not pleased to see the photos showing the irresponsible handling of the guns (sure, take your pics, keep them private, but to show them publicly??), I do believe in the right to bear arms! However, I was even more taken aback by Peter's statement never thought I would see the day when I would be sharing correspondence with hicks and rednecks! And what is wrong with a 'hick' or 'redneck'?? As an exchange student in Germany 20 years ago, I was explaining to one of my German friends what a redneck was (I am from the American south... South Carolina!)... And I started to describe it in somewhat derogatory terms until her father walked in and past and I saw he had one of the reddest necks I've ever seen and he was a hardworking farmer... I managed to correct myself before I insulted him. I have found that many 'hicks' and 'rednecks' are in fact well educated and more tolerant than Peter shows himself to be! Clear Skies! I currently own one gun and have owned several, including assault weapons. I support the right to private ownership of firearms. But, I also believe that all firearms should be treated with respect and they have a proper place. My current firearm has not left it's lock box in over a year - and the last time it was removed was for a cleaning. I would be a happy man if my gun is never discharged or brandished. Again, assuming the pistol that started all of this is real, juvenile tomfoolery with guns is not only irresponsible, but it's also off-topic for this list. Unfortunately, I will catch some flak from my fellow Americans for stating this in public, but we are an arrogant bunch and we think our way is always the right way. As a whole, we have little consideration for the cultures or beliefs of others. To be sure, there are a few right-leaning List members who think that Peter just needs to drink a Coca Cola, smoke a Marlboro cigarette, drink a Starbucks coffee, and watch a mindless Hollywood 3-D movie.
