[meteorite-list] Wisconsin Trip, Addition

2010-04-25 Thread meteoritefin...@yahoo.com
I also want to mention another few new friends I had the pleasure to make on
the trip. And they would be Todd Parker, Jack Schrader, and Jim Baxter. Although
I didn't get to spend as much time with them as I would have liked, I was very
happy to finally meet them all (even if they did show me up with their big
finds! ;-)

[meteorite-list] Guns

2010-02-04 Thread meteoritefin...@yahoo.com

Lots of chatter on this. Please forgive this semi -off topic post.

I am not making a "soap box triade " here. And for the record, I too grew up
with guns as my Dad was a big hunter ( but I never liked killing anything so
I never was a hunter). I do however own a pistol and a rifle, for whatever that
has to say.

About 2 years ago, my wife went to a local Firehouse Sandwich in a VERY
"resectable" part of town at roughly 8:30 pm to get my 2 sons some late supper.
The next thing I knew, my phone rang from that place. The voice on the phone
said my wife was OK (thank God) but they had just been robbed by two armed
"men". My wife had been forced to get down on her knees while a "man" held a
gun to her head while the robbery was taking place. My life could have ended
right there along with her's but thank God they did't pull the trigger! I have
to say that after that, it entered my mind that I wished guns had NEVER been
invented.

Hi All,

It has taken many hours slowly removing the caliche without removing remnant

I know some purists would rather see specimens in their 'found' state, but I
just couldn't resist trying to bring this ugly duckling back to life.

Great photos.

Michael B, I got to see and hold that piece in my hands at West. The owner
said he was NOT going to sell it for ANY price! Looks like he changed his
mind. ;-). Congrats on adding that fantastic hammer to your collection.

And Michael J, thanks again for making these great pics available for us all.

Hello All

While we wish to report that we have had some success, such is not the case
but for the fact that we now know where the meteorite ARENT. No finds were
made today by any of the hunters. It is helpful, although disheartening,
information.

We started our day with Patrick Herrmann among some of the more residential
areas along the predicted line. The residents here are both interested and
accommodating, allowing us access in with a compliance rate of 100%.

The afternoon was spent in one of the many vineyards with Mike Farmer and
Jim Strope followed by a meeting with the local news in which Farmer was
featured and a request was made for all the local citizens to check their
yards and contact the scientists from Western University if any stones are
found. While it would usually be commonplace for the dealers to request the
action, the fact of the matter is that science does not have a single
specimen to test at this point and science needs to be done.

We capped the evening at a local English restaurant and swapped stories.

As we close the day, two new pieces of information have come to light which
could put us on a new path.tomorrow will tell.

Rob and Mike

Hi all,

On September 24, 2009 I made (what I think will be) one of the most
important Arizona meteorite finds of my life. I found what is probably
a very rare achondrite meteorite. I say probably because no one can
definitively say what type it is just by looking. It is currently
being classified at ASU by Lawrence Garvie – so we will soon know.

Here is a link
http://www.mr-meteorite.net/ararearizonafind.htm

This past weekend – in an attempt to find more - I put together a team
of top notch meteorite hunters (Mike Miller, Sonny Clary, Stan Wall,
Del Waterbury, Mike Morgan and Myself). Unfortunately, between the
rains and mud we came up empty.

After checking the weather (online) with a very helpful Susan Morrison
we decided that in order to get out of the rain we needed to head
east. Within a sort time we found ourselves in an area in New Mexico
where no finds have been recorded.

We hunted for an hour or two when I spotted Mike Morgan and Del
examining a stone. Sure enough Del had found his first cold find and
it was a very fresh looking meteorite! Mike Morgan was next to find
one and then shortly after I did too.

We think this may prove to be a β€œNEW” and very fresh New Mexico Strewn
field. Time will tell as we return to hunt for more of these
beautifully crusted specimens in the weeks to come.

Take a look
