I agree with Keith. This cube is a wonderful specimen that shows
better than ordinary (not that meteorites are ordinary) slices. The
real shame in meteorite specimen processing over cutting. This cube
could have been cut into several slices but some one decided to

2008-02-04 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Dave,

It is unfortunate that this
business has a built-in financial incentive to cut meteorites into very
small pieces for distribution (because there is a larger market for smaller
pieces at a higher per-gram price many meteorites are essentially
destroyed...this is a plain fact

I wouldn't second that regarding the iron meteorites.
Cutting, preparing, stabilizing iron slices is very cost-intensive.
One needs machines, consumables, the cut loss is high
and a proper cut, grinding, polishing, etching etc is an extremely
time-consuming process.
So that I would suppose that most iron preparators would rather prefer to
sell larger rough specimens and then at a lower price per gram, than smaller
slices.

Btw with Cape York I feel it more inappropriate
to see two of the masses rotting for decades in the Danish rain in the court
of the museum in Copenhagen.

Hi, Keith,
I'd figured there was enough banter amongst the group already, but here is a
last ditch effort to provoke some thinking. We haven't met yet, but I'm a
collector in Atlanta. While I don't necessarily think it was a horrible
end for this particular meteorite, the point, generally speaking, is a
quite good one to consider (not taking and distributing photographs, which
I'm sure everyone very much appreciates). It is unfortunate that this
business has a built-in financial incentive to cut meteorites into very
small pieces for distribution (because there is a larger market for smaller
pieces at a higher per-gram price many meteorites are essentially
destroyed...this is a plain fact). I'm not a tree hugger by any stretch,
and in the case of this particular meteorite specimen the principles may not
fully apply. But the larger point might be that it is, in fact, truly
stupid to call someone else stupid for opening up the dialogue. Isn't
respectful collaboration and exchange the point of a list such as this,
anyway?
Best to all,
Dave

Obviously true, Christian. And also true in John's note that cubes are
better than slices in some cases due to less kerf waste. I'd imagine most
(if not everyone) who have commented on the 3D aesthetic values also love
spheres for similar reasons. No need to expand on that...

Thanks for all of the insight, and to you, Keith, for getting all of this
rolling with your terrific pictures!

I started this little banter because of a personal attack (one is not
stupid for having a subjective opinion), as this is not the place for
them. Stupid is as stupid does. - Forrest Gump

2008-02-04 Thread Dave Gheesling
Your points are right on the money, Martin. I very much agree, and it
surprising to see that there is little-to-no market appreciation in terms of
perceived economic value for this work with irons, particularly slices.
I'll assume that perhaps you would second my point below re: stones, and we
can leave it at that (in fact, a little marketing machine is being ramped up
as we type for a beautiful stone which no doubt will be rolled out to
slaughter in short order, and it will be pathetic to watch).

The only part of my original note that started volleying back and forth was
the point about cutting meteorites and waste. My point had more to do with
the larger picture outlined in the list Policies: be courteous and
professional, no personal attacks, identify ADs properly and limit them to
once per week so as to avoid spamming the group, etc. All good points. All
frequently ignored.

Best regards,

Dave

I have no problem with someone not liking my collection but there's a point

IMO, Matteo's comments about this cube tend to be more toward the rude end

this cube story.

It doesn't matter how many slices are added for sale of Cape York,

nagging about a cube..?
If this sucker would also be sliced up we probably again will oooeehh and

Now for those folksjust look at it as a very thick sliceHappy again?

Look, I'm frustrated also for not making it to Tucson this year but at

Keith's photo is awesome, as are all his photos. Thank you so much, Keith, for
letting us participate in the Tucson Show events even though we are so far away!

But, gentlemen, tolerance and freedom of opinion, please! Now that we don't hear
very much from Steve Arnold, Chicago, it looks as if picking on Matteo is hip
again!

I must admit that when I saw that cube, my first idea was it must be a
mock-up or
something like that, ... maybe someone cracking a joke. The picture is
fascinating,
the cube breathtaking, Keith's idea to post the photo an excellent idea but I
would
not want to change the natural appearance of such an important meteorite and
force it into such a geometrical corset.

My very personal opinion, only!

Re: [meteorite-list] Keith's Tucson Meteorite of the Day

2008-02-03 Thread Dave Gheesling
List,

This is a polarizing subject, to be sure. As much as I love the photos
(please keep them coming, Keith), I agree that the destruction of meteorites
is a problem. A little more on this via the following link (Part II):

http://www.fallingrocks.com/priority.htm

Also, the following are the Policies we've all agreed to when participating
in the list (I've cut and pasted them below):

General List Policies -
1. All posts need to relate to meteorites in some way
2. Please be courteous and professional at all times
3. Do not post -private messages- or -personal attacks- to the list (direct
all personal replies to the specific recipient)
4. Please include a relevant -subject- in the subject of the email
5. Do NOT send -HTML- or -Rich Text- formatted emails ... only TEXT will be
posted
6. Do NOT send emails with -file attachments- to the list (include a web
link to the file)
7. Limit AD posts to once-per-week (i.e. refrain from spamming the list with
ads)
8. All AD posts should contain the words -SALE- or -AD- in the subject of
the email

Just today, posts have strayed from at least #1, #2, #3, #7 and #8. This is
a wonderful thing, the list, and the Policies are well structured to keep it
that way. Apologies for the unsolicited opinion, but #2 and #3 are
particularly important in keeping a good group together...

Re: [meteorite-list] Keith's Tucson Meteorite of the Day

2008-02-03 Thread Dave Gheesling
Hi, Keith,
I'd figured there was enough banter amongst the group already, but here is a
last ditch effort to provoke some thinking.
Isn't
respectful collaboration and exchange the point of a list such as this,
anyway?
Best to all,
Dave

Hello List

I can't understand why you think this is a horrible end for a meteorite.
You can see the 3 dimensional Widmanstatten perfect and the shape of the
troilite inclusions, better than in any 2D slice.
No materiel was wasted in getting the cube shape, other than normal saw and
grind waste, It was a large long brick, after removing several slices it's a

cube.
I think the Karl's did a great job. I'll post more later this week.
Thanks for your time
