[meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
I put a notice on the Meteorite Picture of the Day yesterday. The camera footage of the perps is good news! Hi all, Mike Reynolds just posted this news story about the theft to the IMCA List. http://goo.gl/7Xvf5 Cheers, Jeff Kuyken Meteorites Australia www.meteorites.com.au President - I.M.C.A. As I can put together more information I will post it. There are additional specimens that were taken. Some of them are shown in the pictures that Mike Hankey linked to from his visit at PARI. If I can get photos from the security cameras, I will post them. I've done a small but important update to the partial list of stolen meteorites. Re: [meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
Anne, Great idea. After reading about the incident on the PARI site it seems like there were very good pictures taken of the suspected thieves when they were casing the facility the Friday before the break in. If possible, would also be helpful to have their pictures. Furthermore, the weights would also be very useful. I doubt that they would try to break these specimens before trying to sell. I am hoping that the facility was properly insured though I realize that some of these may be very difficult to ever replace. Hoping that the New year brings news ... Re: [meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
Thank you John for that list, and thank you Mike for the pictures. The Tucson Show is only a month away and some of those pieces might very well re-surface there as it is quite common when you have a show-room to see people come in and offer to sell you some meteorites. I believe we should watch for that. A few of the meteorites on that list and on pictures are quite rare and could be easy to spot, the St Aubain with a lot of rust for instance. Or Aubres, or Bristol, or Stalldaler. Or the Forsyth County; as far as I know I am the only one with a slice of Forsyth and mine is not at all square, so anyone who tries to sell a square slice of Forsyth would be highly suspect in my eyes. Re: [meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
Ya this is terrible. I had the pleasure of visiting PARI in 2011 and seeing these meteorites in person! The owner of PARI and the people who work there are super nice and generous, the place is basically a charity. What a nasty thing to do on Christmas eve too. Here are a two pictures of the PARI collection (or part of the collection) I took while I was there. I wish I had taken more. http://i.imgur.com/9UeWY.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TocIQ.jpg On Fri, Dec 28, 2012 at 12:04 PM, Richard Montgomery wrote: > That is aweful. Re: [meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
One can't just walk into a pawn shop and sell these. So there is a good chance that the stolen mets will end up on eBay or will be offered to someone in the meteorite community - just like the thief who stole the Big Kahuna's meteorites a few months back. These thieves don't realize how small and close-knit the meteorite community is. Ditto what Richard said about weights - also, some photos of the individual specimens would be helpful. It sounds like the police have a good head start with the surveillance video. Re: [meteorite-list] ALERT: Large number of meteorites stolen
That is a damn shame. We will certainly keep our eyes open for these specimens and will report the thieves if they try to contact us. This is what happens when the world is told that meteorites are worth big money. I have definitely noticed a distinct uptick in meteorite thefts in the last year or two. Hopefully this does not become a new trend - if it isn't already. Maybe we should experiment with a "Lojack" for meteorites - drill a discrete hole into a large meteorite mass, insert a GPS tracking device, seal the hole, and put the specimen out on display. Those tracking devices are getting smaller and smaller as times goes on.
