I have an unusual Campo with a tail on eBay. It looks oriented but has no
flow lines on the bottom.

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo, Las Palmas, Aruacu. Same or different

2010-12-07 Thread Jonathan E. Dongell

All,
I am sure this one has been already been answered; if so, please send me to
good source

(hopefully difinitive) that I might educate myself.
There seems to be conflicting 'reads' on these two meteorites:
Campo del Cielo, Argentina
Las Palmas, Argentina
Are they possibly from the same fall, or not.

2010-12-07 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Jonathan,

I've been told that Las Palmas is different than Campo. I don't know
about the third iron you mentioned. But, Las Palmas has not been
classified or approved yet, so nothing is official yet. The source
that told me is on this list.

Best regards,

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo STAMP. First stamp in 3D

2007-08-09 Thread Eduardo.
Hi

There is a new stamp of the Campo del Cielo meteorites.

The block has a stamp of the Chaco meteorite, the main mass of Campo
del Cielo. Also pictured in the block is a drawing of the Campo del Cielo
Fall.
The most amazing thing about this stamp is that the Chaco photo is IN 3-
D!. THIS IS THE FIRST STAMP IN 3 DIMENSIONS:

http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/stamp.jpg

I have available some sets which include:

* the block pictured above

* a pair of glasses to see the 3D effect:
http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/lentes.jpg

* a promotional cover for the stamp:
http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/folleto1.jpg
http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/folleto1b.jpg

* and a booklet with the history and description of Campo del Cielo as
good as information of the stamp. This is very nice as some of the photos
of the booklet ARE ALSO 3D

http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroext2.jpg
http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroint1.jpg

The set is U$S 4 each+sh

Shipping cost is U$S 4 for 1 to 4 sets, and $10 for 5 or more sets

payment can be done by paypal: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Note that the photo and the other 3d pictures seem to be out of focus
as you need the 3d glasses to see the 3 dimensional effect.

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo auction - The Argentinian answer

2006-04-15 Thread M come Meteorite Meteorites
Hello

this is the answer to the campo del cielo sold on
auction

Subastaron dos meteoritos descubiertos en Argentina

Uno se vendió por más de US$ 90 mil y pesa 161
kilogramos.

Bonhams,

tanto a

espacio exterior. Los meteoritos son preciados porque
son raros,
no abundan. Si reunimos todos los meteoritos que
existen,

Estados
Unidos y Europa.

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo recovered weight

2005-02-17 Thread Sara Arsenault
Dear list,
I have been reading post on the list for a few months now. This is my first
intervention, I hope some of you will be able to help out.

I am working on a virtual exhibition concerning meteorites for the Montreal
Planetarium, Canada. One of the sections of the site will present some
famous meteorites including Campo del Cielo. I am trying to evaluate the
total recovered weight for this meteorite. In Grady’s catalogue (page 126),
the addition of the numerous masses give a total of 45 tonnes
(approximately). The 37 tonnes that Robert Haag tried to buy with no success
in 1990 is not cited. Would the real total be 82 tonnes? If so, Camp del
Cielo would be the heaviest iron meteorite recovered (in total mass)...

Thank you for your help and excuse my English, it is a second language.

Hello Sara and List,

I am trying to evaluate the total recovered weight for this meteorite.
In Grady's catalogue (page 126), the addition of the numerous masses
gives a total of 45 tonnes (approximately). The 37 tonnes that Robert
Haag tried to buy with no success in 1990 is not cited. Would the real
total be 82 tonnes? If so, Camp del Cielo would be the heaviest iron
 meteorite recovered (in total mass).

shielding and meteoroid's preatmospheric size (MAPS 37-2, 2002, pp.
295-300, excerpts from p. 295):

Preatmospheric size - radius larger than 300 cm plus a mass of at least
84 kg. Iron = 92.7 %, nickel = 6.15 %, cobalt = 0.42 %, carbon = 0.37 %,
phosphorus = 0.28 %. Romana A. and Cassidy W.A. (1972)  determined the time
of fall to be ca. 4000 years BP by radiocarbon dating of charcoal samples
extracted from the bottom of one of the craters.

Excavation of two medium-sized craters (crater 9 and 10 - there are more than
20 craters) revealed two pieces of about 5000 kg each buried in one and another
piece of about 36000 kg in the other. Assuming a minimum mass of 5000 kg in
each of the other 18 craters implies a recovered mass of at least 14 kg
(Cassidy, pers. comm.). This value corresponds to an original meteoroid radius
of at least 160 cm.

Best wishes from
Germany,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo meteorites

2003-06-13 Thread Miguel Angel del Buono
Hello,

In agreement with the expressed by Mr. Michael Farmer, in a lot of
meteorites from Campo del Cielo he found a new chondrite named Pitino. On
this matter I have two observations:
1) There is no city or geographic reference with that name in Argentina. In
that case the proposed name for the meteorite will be Campo del Cielo II.
2) As the meteorite is from Campo del Cielo, the proprietary is the
Goverment of Argentina. So is forbidden any people has a fragment of it.

I also remember a meteorite of 6 to 8 tons was stolen from Campo del Cielo.

Re: [meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo meteorites

2003-06-13 Thread Tom aka James Knudson
Hello List, I am confused, again! This letter says;
1) There is no city or geographic reference with that name in Argentina. In
that case the proposed name for the meteorite will be Campo del Cielo II.

Now from this, I would have to guess that if the meteorite is called
Pitino And there is no Pitino in Argentina, that this meteorite must not
be from Argentina? And;

2) As the meteorite is from Campo del Cielo, the proprietary is the
Goverment of Argentina. So is forbidden any people has a fragment of it.

It would stand to reason that if this meteorite is not from Argintina then
Argintina would not be the proprietary of this meteorite sence it is not
from Argintina? Plese correct me if I am wrong on this, am I missing
something?

Thanks, Tom
The proudest member of the IMCA 6168

P.S. . So is forbidden any people has a fragment of it. ?

I also remember a meteorite of 6 to 8 tons was stolen from Campo del
Cielo.

The meteorite is named Pitino, there is a place called Pitino, or the
Meteoritical Society would not have named it that. You seem to be the same

Hey Mike,

Don't worry too much about the name. Heck, it might just as well have
been named Mike's Chondrite, which would be consistent with the NomCom's
acceptance of the name Joel's Iron from Chile.

Hello Again list, I am still confused about this line;

So is forbidden any people has a fragment of it.

Well then, a thin section, endcut, part slice or full slice is OK, just not
a fragment? Please keep this in mind when buying this meteorite!

Hi List,

On hindsight, it seems Joel's Iron was never submitted to the NomCom
since it was found in 1858, but it was studied by Buchwald, and later by
Wasson Canut de Bon, which establishes this name as authoritative just
the same.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Joel's Iron was named long before there was a
NomCom. This name would indeed violate the modern Guidelines for Meteorite
Nomenclature had it been found recently. There are other meteorites with
similar grandfathered names, e.g.. Lutschaunig's Stone, Holland's Store,
and my favorite, Slaghek's Iron.

Re: [meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo meteorites

2003-06-13 Thread Jeff Grossman
Mike,

The Meteoritical Society is not an authority on geographic names. The
NomCom does the best it can in approving names for meteorites based on
geographic names, but mistakes do get made. We often have to rely on
people with local knowledge of the find area (or the submitter of the
meteorite to us), and they are not always fully reliable sources.

Our job is to provide a label for each meteorite. We have done that. Now,
the name of the meteorite is authoritative. Whether Pitino is a proper
place-name remains open for discussion.

[meteorite-list] Campo del Cielo

2002-11-24 Thread BOORX4
Greetings meteorite enthusiasts,

Last Sunday I took my wife shopping to the Arizona Mills shopping mall in
Chandler, AZ (this is south of Phoenix). I came across a store called Black
Market Rock and Mineral, so while the wife was clothes shopping, I went in to
look around.
In one case they had some iron meteorites which were tagged Campo del
Cielo.
The smaller meteorites on the upper shelf were all shiny from some sort of
lacquer coating. I thought this was a very odd way to sell irons. Maybe it
looks good for tourists. The lower shelf had much larger meteorites. I was
able to read the price on one which was about the size of a grapefruit. The
were asking $635.00. I thought this to be a little pricey and the entire lot
of meteorites, one big rip off.

What does the list think? Your comments are quite welcome.

Bob

Based on this info I declare that Campo killed a human and a dog when it
fell. Ample evidence exists. In fact, the dog was an ancestor of an ancient
ocean faring group of dogs that later settled in Nakhla Egypt. The human was
the dogs owner who tried to save his dog and got whacked with the dog when
the meteorite fell.
The human and the dog were both hunting deer when the meteorite fell.

I think it's fairly obvious that a rabid deer chasing a dog that was
chasing a man all fell into the crater where they drowned.
