Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
UPDATE: I've added another map to the mess. ;) Don't really have time to do anything with this, those who can use it here it is. Marc Fries' radar data is plotted on the map, http://radarmeteorites.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/southern-ms-12-jan-11-0244-utc/ and I credit him for his work. Nice job! An interesting note is that I conducted 2 phone interviews with two eye witnesses a day or so before Marc posted his radar data. When I plotted their reports on the map, they roughly pointed in the same general area as the radar return with regard to their sighting direction and flight path of the fireball. The witness North of Pickens AR reported massive fragmentation, and the witness in MS stated they saw no fragmentation and that the fireball appeared to fall all the way to the ground. Not sure if 20 miles would make the difference between seeing the fragmentation or not, but the MS witness was 241 miles from Marc's radar return, whereas, the Pickens AR witness was 221 miles away. (this assuming the radar return is the bolide event) It's possible that the small differentiation between the distances from the fireball event and the curvature of the Earth allowed the AR witness to see the fragmentation, whereas the MS witness was unable to see it because their view was obscured by the horizon. A lot of things need to be considered like the altitude, the timing of the sighting, the height/altitude of each witness. Either way, it's interesting. Let me make this disclaimer. This is only a rough estimate based on compiled information, sonic boon reports, fireball sighting reports, radar, and phone interviews. Use this info at your own risk. Video is basically useless, and I've not yet plotted ANY video on this map. I've heard of some CNN video, and other video which actually shows the fireball in the air, but have only seen one. Anyone wanting to help let me know. I'll plot it when I get time. Enjoy... Happy Hunting! Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
Now I have never seen a fire ball so I am not sure how they look in the sky and move, but for it to be heard in NC from some reports I have to assume the more in the eastern side of the sky when this event took place the other night? I hope in the next few days we can get some reports from people that heard the boom and state their location. All I have read in some blog posts is that they heard a boom, but they forgot to tell the time and their location. I wondering if a meteorite comes from this fireball, how far would the meteorite be from the boom of the fall? I think some of the confusion might lie with the various times the sonic booms occurred after the visual meteor event was over. A fireball I witnessed in 1993 produced a sonic boom for me 2 minutes and 43 seconds after its initial appearance. I'm sure the times would have varied even in minutes for other witnesses at other locations. This might be the source of apparent multiple meteors being reported. Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
Thanks for the post, Eric. A TV station out of Lafayette, Louisiana reports on it. Below are 2 links from them, the first being a written account of the meteor and the 2nd is a link to the embedded video report, including a photo of what they say was THAT meteor ( no info on who took it, etc. ). They say the fireball was traveling from SE to NW, and was visible from OK to FL with sonic booms heard in NC where it was too cloudy to spot visually. That's a BIG chunk of real estate! As Eric wrote, there were sighting of it right here in Little Rock, AR. Unfortunately, I wasn't outside or even facing the right direction from any window in my house, so I didn't see it. Does look and sound promising for dropping meteorites. Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
Hey Robert, a short duration Fireball doesn't really mean much with regard to whether meteorites are on the ground as evidenced by the Whetstone Mountains meteorite fall. The question on this one is whether there was fragmentation, and if there is video of that fragmentation. Fragmentation has been reported by many eye witnesses. A good sign is that sonic booms were heard as well, and quote houses were rattled. Though not definitive it's a very good piece of the puzzle. Hi List, Some one on hear gave me a link last year, from the NWS, where all national radar data is kept for 5 days, You just type in the city, date and time and you get that radar image. I saved it some where but can't find it right now. maybe someone still has it. Will keep looking. Data after the 5 days can still be gotten But is harder to get. Did they try the Texarcana and Littlerock radars? The descriptions I read it had to fall north of Littlerock between Calico Rock and Marshall. And if they are looking after 8:30 they have the wrong time. The mountains would hide the meteorite so sombody on 67 headed north would only see the sky glow. Hi Eric, and list I take alot of storm photos in south-west Ohio, and the local guys at the NWS- Wilmington Ohio, will send me radar images of my storm photos,(date-time of my photos) months later. So I would think if anyone contacted the NWS in a city in the southern States they will do the same, for this meteor image? Here is a example of what I have taken of storms and the radar images that they sent me, months later! I hope it works in the south for someone getting meteorite data. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=25502id=10209843157l=3ae06f2885 Good luck to all! dave myers - Original Message From: Meteorites USA e...@meteoritesusa.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Wed, January 12, 2011 6:37:58 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011 Sucks that the radar is unreadable. [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011
Hello Listers, This is exciting news about the 1.11.11 fire ball sighting. Now I wonder has any listers been able to determine the time of the fall. I have read 8:50pm and also 8:30pm and the reports at AMS range from 8:30 to 9:00 pm. Also the sightings are all over the board from 6 different states. From what I can gather is that the fire ball moved from a SE to NW and people in NC heard a boom. Shawn, The event timestamp from the first video is 8:47 CST. I had estimated the time at my initial post of the event at 8:45 CST which was nearly correct. Please see my website I have added more video. At least 9 states saw the event and I still think that there were AT LEAST 2 bolides see in the Jackson at perhaps 3-10 minutes after the initial.
