[meteorite-list] Impact evidence in trees?

2011-12-20 Thread Mike Fiedler
OK, check this out . . . .

Check out this picture:
http://pics.livejournal.com/neferjournal/pic/000zcpp1/g21

Looks like these trees ALL were bent to the ground, radiating away
from a common point!

The info I was given places this near "Gryfino, Poland", but offers no
explanation for the trees' shape.

Is there a Meteorite at the vertex of all that flexing???

Anyone on the list know more about it? Anyone live close to Gryfino?

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact evidence in trees?

2011-12-20 Thread Chris Peterson
Trees grow like this when subjected to a steady load for several years,
not when they are exposed to a blast.

At high altitude, this kind of bending is common from heavy snow loading
that persists well into the spring growth season. At lower altitudes, as
in the Polish forest, it is most likely that the bending is induced.
Foresters sometimes load young trees on plantations (and that looks like
a plantation) to produce curved wood for a variety of purposes, most
especially for furniture making.

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact evidence in trees?

2011-12-20 Thread Craig Moody

Hello Mike and List:
First of all...Seasons Greetings to all! Hope you all get the rocks you want!

Regarding these trees. Notice that there is a very clear 90 degree seam at the
bend. What is done here is a grafting technique, where a 90 degree wedge is
taken out when the tree is very young <5years, and it is folded over on itself
, then treated with Plant growth hormones for rapid healing. It is sealed with
a wax tape Then it is shaped as it grows until it reaches the desired shape.
This is a lot of work to get the desired results. I agree with Sergey that is
is used in furniture making - very expensive furniture.

I have seen 'living' furniture too. Live trees that have been bent and grafted
into ladders, benches, chairs. Takes years to do well.

Cheers all.

These trees remind me of old Indian trail marker trees. There are a few
surviving bent tree trail markers here in northern Indiana.

And snow storms can do that too.

That tree is still alive and well in my front yard, but it did have to be
trimmed a bit.
