My criteria for a hunt would have to include: - good chance of finding something - sense of adventure - scenery - dark skies I'd have to vote for the Australian outback. A helicopter tour of craters (with a couple of hours and a metal detector at each) and then about a week just rambling around the desert. If I could search anywhere in the world it would have to be the Canadian territory Nunavut. I would search here because it has probably never been searched before, the natives have probably found meteorites before and made weapons out of them, and they could probaly show you any rock that had fallen from the sky or seems out of the ordinary. Since the contest specifies "meteorite hunting anywhere in the world", that precludes my first choice: the Kuiper belt. Who knows what we could find there ! In keeping with the limitations set by Mark, I would go on an extended tour of the Canadian Prairies. There are a lot of meteorites still undiscovered in the Alberta-Saskatchewan-manitoba belt (we do discover a couple every year or so). Indeed, a great portion of the known Canadian meteorites were found by farmers working on their land. Besides, I *love* visiting the Prairies. I would like to go WHERE meteorites are sitting on the ground waiting to be found. Just as you pick one up , you see another even nicer. The place where you spend more time picking them up than looking for them. Having to decide which ones to keep. And while you are deciding, six more impact the ground in succession off to your right. Hi Mark and List! Great idea for a contest to be sure! I'll tell you where I'd like to go. I'd like to hit the Gobi desert for and extended period. Why you ask? Well, let me tell you that aside from being virtually unexplored by western man in recent history, it covers a temendous area of land, its suited for meteorite searches in that the soil is light enough for dark colored fusion crusted items to stand out and its barren enough to allow for aerial recon with hopefully good results for impact sites. So, with that in mind Mark, when are you organizing a trip there and how do we get ultralites/balloons/gyrocopters over there and to the field (You might read the book titled "the dinosaurs of the flaming cliffs" by Novacek). The Chinese are very open about westerners visiting their country now and so permits shouldn't be a major problem. - Original Message - From: MARK BOSTICK To: Meteorite List Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 4:40 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #8...Free Canyon Diablo Hello List, Its Meteorite Contest #8.
