Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall

2009-02-15 Thread Carl 's

Hello John and others,

I have smaller pieces than yours so your visual assessment may be more accurate
than my own, but my .3g Carancas appear a bit whiter than my .89g Tamdakht
(Tishka). I remember earlier descriptions of the Carancas was that it is very
friable. I haven't read if anybody had tried to crush the Tamdakht with just
fingers. Another similar looking meteorite I have is the Weston.

Carl

G'Day List
I noticed there's been alot of information posted in regards to the recent
fall in Morocco, Tishka. I will call it that for the time being, knowing
quite well it could change and there's alot of alternatives out there.
Now I might be blowing a little bit of smoke here, so please don't flame me
too hard. But I received a 4.5 gram fragment of Tishka and naturally my
first move is I grab my loop and do a quick scan. I don't have the ability
to do scientific analysis, but from doing a preliminary check it was like
deja-vu. So yes, back to the boxes of my collection and sure enough I found
a 3 gram piece of Carancas. I was amazed at the similarities. Now don't get
me wrong here, this is just a visual inspection. The Carancas which had a
nice area of slickenslide which has been referred to, also appears to be
identical on Tishka. And then you have other characteristics and I can list
a few more, but I don't possess the scientific knowledge that the members of
the list have.
But I just found it uncanny that I'm holding Carancas in one hand and Tishka
in the other and I just could not tell them apart. Am I just assuming that
we have something similar or just grabbing at straws?
I would like hear your input . As I said earlier, I might just be blowing
smoke, but has anyone else noticed the similarities?
Cheers
John

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall info.

2009-01-29 Thread Bob Loeffler
H... Is it possible to have a meteorite fall where some of the stones
have absolutely no chondrites, yet some of the stones are chock-full of
them? This sounds very fishy, especially after seeing the crater/pit
pictures. Maybe Michael Farmer and a couple others in Tucson should compare
their new Moroccan meteorites to see if our community is being sold
completely different meteorites (but under the same name). Don't get me
wrong, I'm not saying that Michael, Svend, Bernd, Steve #2 or the other
purchasers are the problem here.

Regards,

Bob

Look, I just held a 3 kilo individual, broken into pieces, but fit back
together. It looks to me and others here at the show like an H3. Plenty of
chondrules actually, I am not sure why you guys can't see chondrules, the
meteorite is chock-full of them. Very nice stone, certainly not an H5 or 6,
could be H3 or 4 would be my guess, leaning toward 3.

It is a nice meteorite, but it sure looks like a pile of it is in Tucson
right now.

By the way, Room 184 at the Inn Suites is OPEN! Moritz Karl, Eric Olsen, Jim
Strope and myself are up and running. The weather is fine, and it looks like
meteorites are a lot sparser this year than ever before.
Look forward to seeing all who are coming.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall/ fact

2009-01-19 Thread Chris Peterson
I think it is technically important to distinguish between a crater, which
is caused by an object traveling at more than terminal velocity, and an
impact pit, which is just the usual small hole or dent (depending on
ground quality) that any slow falling object (including most meteorites)
will create.

I asked for true information on the new fall, you are going crazy attacking me?

This was proof in his mind. I still had my doubts.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall news.

2009-01-17 Thread Martin Altmann
humhem,

don't want to sound cheekily, but the fall of a new meteorite is a joyful
event and not a calamity or a disgrace..
Isn't it?

Well, can't understand the public poison in that debate about the new fall,
just a little patience and then we'll see, what had happened, what has been
found ect.

Meanwhile some boring sentimentalities.:-)

When I was a little boy, buying my first meteorite, there existed 2000
finds, 1000 falls,
90% of them locked away in institutions, and at the best available in single
micro-bogey-sized crumbs.
I noticed the Calcalong sensation, I saw DaG 400 and 262 arriving, asking
prices of a quarter of a million per gram.
Whenever I pointed my telescope to the Moon, I dreamt of holding a stone
from up there in my hands, like those white men on the iconostasis of space
flight.
Mars I observed of course too, but never it came to my mind, that a stone
from there would have made it to Earth,
cause Zagami had on his label still standing: eucrite.
Today I handle main masses of Moon and Mars. And Mars and Moon are ours. We
even earn money with them (even dicing it in little pieces, making little
Martin's old dream come true for thousands of people).

I got in my hands types and stones, which I never could get in my possession
on the classical names sector, simply because they would not be affordable
or available or in some cases, simply because such stones where not known so
far.
Yah, it costs us endless work, nerves, health, sometimes frustration,
personal and financial risks, also skills in recognizing and experience are
needed,
but in the final consequence, were it we, who picked up the suspicious stone
in desert?

This year we will reach NWA-number 6000.
Twice as much finds as meteorites in total from the 2000 years before
existed, when I started.
The rarest types became readily available to the collectors and science and
so low rates were asked as unseen in the 200 years of meteorite trade
before.
It may sound unwelcomely to the classic/conservative collectors, but aside
Antarctica,
in meteoritics of the last two decades, the progress of the subject and
planetology, the most recoveries by number and importance were made in
research on the hot desert finds, where NWAs outnumber all other desert
finds together.
These NWAs were not found by scientific expeditions and campaigns,
they were hunted and brought to light by the people of these NWA-countries
and channelled through Morocco.

The meteorite community - private collectors and professional scientists -
profited on the work of the Moroccans.

The structures in Morocco grew in a different way, as we used to see from
professional meteorite hunters or scientific hunts.
In turn for this deficiency, the collectors, universities and museums don't
have to pay anymore 500 or 2000$ a gram for a howardite, but 5-40$, not
1000$ for a bencubbinite, but 50$ or less, not 800-1200$ for an Acapulcoite,
but 50$ and so on and not anymore 1000$++/g for a H5 W3 recovered in
Antarctica - and they have such a choice of exotic and unique stones, they
never would have dreamt of.
And in many respects resemble the NWAs the Antarctic finds, which have lost
due the migration of the ice all there strewnfield information, the
information about break-up and fall angle and the original weight of the
fall and which are numbered in the field, pairings put together later in the
lab.

And if there one can find other business standards and maybe here and there
a lousy ethics and if Morocco is shark-tank,
so what? The collector hasn't to care for,
as long as there are people working as a buffer, taking all risks on their
shoulders.

El Hammami, Zag, Bensour, Amgala, Bensour, Benguerir, Oum Dreyga, Chergach,
Bassikounou
They were the cheapest observed falls of their times and btw. in history
(e.g. 15 years after the 2 tons fall of Pultusk, the average price on the
world market was 7.4$/g - and it was the cheapest stone meteorite of its
time, the Gao, the NWA 869 of the 19th century). They yielded excellent to
fantastic stones, which a collector couldn't get hold of with the other
falls, simply because they produced not such stones or they were very
expensive.

Let's see, what this fall will bring and let's don't forget the other side
of the medal, what for an immense contribution and enrichment the finds and
falls from this corner of the world meant to the World of meteorites.

Have a nice and peaceful weekend!
Martin

Martin

[meteorite-list] NEW Moroccan fall

2009-01-16 Thread Abdelaziz Alhyane
Hello List Members,

The bright fireball seen over Taliouine travelleing from southwest to the
northeast, It has been seen over Igherm, Taliouine, Askaoune, so the right
direction of the meteoritic fireball, is Igherm- tichka( Telouat where it fell).
http://nwameteoritesss.skyrock.com/profil/photos/78989604

I wonder if a fireball can turn left or right and take the road to pass over
Marrakech to Eljadida, maybe it just come for a tourism trip and have some swim
at eljadida beach then get back to the space.

My best
Aziz

Hello,

that looks like a great new fall. But I found a stone
was found at Tamdaght SE of Telouet, on the road to
Ouarzazate. Does it confirm a trajectory from SW to
NE (Igherm - Telouet) ? Were the hundreds of
kilograms found near Telouet also ?

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall news.

2009-01-16 Thread Michael Farmer
I just got an interesting phone call from Morocco.
It seems that this may be bigger than even the Moroccans are saying.
I was told that more than one metric TON of meteorite fragments are recovered,
and that apparently a massive stone fell in the Atlas mountains forming a
crater, and shattering the stone into thousands of fragments. Not one complete
stone found, only again MORE THAN ONE TON of fragments.
I am awaiting photos. This one could be interesting! The area is completely
under heavy snow right now though.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall news.

2009-01-16 Thread Michael Farmer
Perhaps it is not true, I don't know, Moroccans are certainly prone to making
up lies, selling crap to anyone with money, and scamming everyone. Hence, my
urge of caution to anyone wanting to buy. As a person who has spent nearly a
half million $ in Morocco, I do have my suppliers and people I trust, and I
trust most of what they say. Now, I am a show-me type of person, I do not
believe this until I see photos or material, I still do not know if a fall
occurred, I know damn well that many Moroccans do not give a shit about the
meteorites, the business or the integrety of the falls (for example, ensuring
that pieces are seperated and sold as what they are, not what makes more
money). They want to milk collectors out of every last Dirham.
Is this new fall real, or just the ugly broken pieces of Chergach that no one
wants to buy (hence the weathering)? Moroccan people have done this to
themselves, no one trusts much of what they say anymore, every fall, Bensour,
Benguerir, Chergach, Oum Dreyga, Bassikounou, ALL of them were only a few
kilos this is all, there is no more You will be the only supplier buy it
now, or you wont get any I paid more but will sell to you for $1.00 gram
blah blah blah.
So, I am writing direct information that I am getting from a somewhat
trustworthy supplier of mine in Morocco. He will be in Tucson, so you can ask
him if he has some, or is it only you Aziz? We have heard this bird chirping a
few times before.

My customers are tired of paying $3 or $5 gram for every new fall from NWA area
and them watching the price drop to $1 gram. Well, this can be solved, don't
buy it yet until facts and total known weight come out.

Never a total known weight comes out from NWA, where is bassi that everybody
said there was a ton or so of it, the same for chergach, only a few grams
available from Moroccans right now, prices going down reason is moroccans
themselves, and for your info mike, you said you don't beleive it until you get
the pics, so why didn't you wait for photos and tell what is true, maybe you
are telling list members LIES, since you're not sure of what you say.
This fall is limited because it fell in Morocco, not chergach or bassi, where
you can not get the facts, but since it's here, what's availble of it, is what
is offering now.

And I can imagine that the experiences one makes between dealers could be

I personally had to do several times with Moroccans what concerns

Matthias,
Please don't overgeneralize my statement. There are few
if any dealers on this list who when talking about METEORITE
TRADERS from Morocco, would disagree that the untruths that
come from there are not almost completely widespread.
Amazing how one iron turns into 100 in a week, yet all of

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall news.

2009-01-16 Thread mail
Hi Said
All this may be true, but many collectors and dealers are hesitant only because
of the past and rightfully so. Now it may be true that hundreds of kilos did
not fall, but you can only cry wolf so many times before no one hears you.
8-10/g is a pipe dream my friend. I haven't seen a Moroccan fall that sold for
that yet in any measurable quantity. Maybe I missed it, so please correct me if
I am wrong.

For the record, I have 3 Moroccan sources that I trust. Enough to wire 10s of
thousands to them. Each has said that this IS a new fall, quantities are
small (open to interpretation). I would assume that means under 40kg for
Moroccans. If they are making up stories then my business will end as I do not
want to do business with liars. Time will tell.

Hi everybody ,
I was away of pc for tow days to come back and found this hot debate about this
new fall in Morocco. Some people's aime is to downgrade this new fall in Morocco
HOWEVER,This would make it very known over all the world and it would make a
good marketing for it since there is only few kilos found. If anyone claimes
that there is hundrads or several kilos he should prove it to the list and show
the photos of the lot..
Few of US dealers said that thier friends in Morocco told them that there was
no fall in Tichka,For those i want to say that your friends in Morocco are not
able nor lucky to get any of this fall..I am also coming to Tucson show and i
will prove to everybody that there was a new fall and you all will get sure
that there is not much of this material available.
The price would probably go up to $8 or 10/gr at tucson show after everybody
gets certain that yes it is a new fall and only little of it is available..

Of course not, Mike - we simply should be careful with our
 discretions.

And I can imagine that the experiences one makes between
dealers could be different from others.

I personally had to do several times with Moroccans what
concerns meteorites, on different levels - buying, getting
information etc. - and all my experiences were pretty good.

But I didn't want to - as we use to say in German -
open this well known barrel again.

 A short note only.

never seen a thing like that, it is so very hard to find the meteorites because
of the snow, much trees, and unfortunately much stories, most are blabla. but
we are always optimistic and trying to get more correct infos and why not to

Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall

2008-12-27 Thread Chris Peterson
Impacts that are audible are exceedingly rare events. Except for the utterly
bizarre, and possibly singular example of Carancas, I don't know of any
meteorite fall that was audible to anybody more than a few meters from the
impact (I would guess a few Sikhote-Alin craters produced a fair bit of
noise).

If people actually heard the impact when they were too far away to
immediately identify the site, this was a crater forming event- possible,
but not very likely. Far more likely is that people heard sonic booms
echoing around hills and valleys- sounds that would be far more impressive
(and scarier) than any impact sound.

Of course, if there was a hypervelocity impact, people will be coming from
all over the world to study it- and there may well be no meteorites at all.

 Good day
I have a meteorite wight about 5.4Kg. I have done
initial test by Atlanta Laboratory, which confirm that
it is come from Maris or Jupiter. It may need to be
tested more for it chemical propriety. It is founded
 in Sahara desert.
I would like to put in the market.
 Can you help me.
I would be glad to send you a pic or meet with you.

This meteorite will be well documented. In fact, Dr Hasnaa Chennaoui,
  who
was mentioned by Philippe Thomas earlier today and is describing it,
  will
be one of two new members of the Nomenclature Committee beginning next
 month.

Dear List;
I propose the name of this new Maris or Jupiter meteorite to be
turnip-truck after association with the finder.

Hello Habibi and list,
I would think that it would be an easy task to get a picture of the
crater or impact hole, whichever you prefer. I suppose it depends on how
loose or damp the soil is where it fell. In either case, the 10 kilo mass
will have obvious soil embedded on it. If they know it weighs 10 kilos and
it was 2 meters deep, than they had to dig it out and destroy the crater.
Still worth a picture for us to see, suppose?

If Mike is unable to get a picture of this, can you share one with us,
Habibi?

Thanks again,
Greg

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall

2002-03-17 Thread Jim Strope

I just got off the phone with Mike Farmer and he will be home on
Tuesdayto make an important announcement concerning the new
Algerian/Moroccan fall.

He wanted me to say that he has a file of all emails that registered
requests for this meteorite while the battle was going on. These people
who jumped to his defense will be rewarded with their requests filled to the
best of his ability. The previously offered price is NO LONGER VALID for
those who did not make initial requests. The price and availability of
future sales is yet to be determined. He is NOT taking any more requests
at this present time until everything gets sorted out.

Best Wishes...

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall

2002-03-17 Thread Jim Strope

When Mike asked the eye witness to the fall about the Dean's claim of rain
he laughed and said "I can't remember the last time it rained". So much
for being "plugged in" to what is actually going on in Morocco.

Mike did not say that he would be selling it next week for 2 or 3 dollars
per gram. He said that he would be getting it next week for those who
requested it. Go back and re-read the emails. For those who
requested it when the offer was made they will be very happy.

Hi Jim!

I have heard that the new fall is going for
.40 per gram. Several Moroccan dealers are retailing it for that.

Hmmm. Farmer said that he would be selling it next week for $2. What about
the people who never emailed him but just decided to wait for him to put
it
on sale next week for $2 expecting him to follow through on his word like
his reputation for keeping his word would normally indicate?

hmmm. This is really problem now.
Maybe he want start selling this for 1$/gram ? :))) Who give less ?
Maybe Mike make small Easter surprise for as ?

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall

2002-03-12 Thread FERNLEA4

Hi folks,

I received several individuals and fragments of the new Moroccan fall this
afternoon, and couldn't resist quickly grinding a face onto one of the pieces
and having a peek inside.
This one fell at 16:17 GMT on 11th February.just about the same time that
many of us were gathering for the start of Daryll Pitt's meteorite auction in
Tucson. Kinda weird timing, don't you think??
It's a very fragile, almost crumbly meteorite that doesn't take a polish at
all, so you might have to concentrate hard when looking at the picture I've
posted here http://fernlea.tripod.com/newfall.html
My largest individual is just over 200g and there are many dinky little,
perfectly fusion crusted individuals that resememble the Holbrook Pultusk
peas.
The matrix had a much higher contrast when it was still wet with alcohol
coolant, but it looks very much blander when dry and it can be difficult to
see the small brecciation. I think LL6 is a pretty safe bet on this one, but
we'll see.

Cheers,
Rob.

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall

2002-03-12 Thread Michael Farmer

Well, I is time for me to jump in here and rain on
Dean Bessy's parade. I also have a substantial amount of this fall on the way
via DHL as I type here! DEan DOES NOT have it all, or even close to HALF as he
so states and is so full of bullshit, that I cant keep quiet here any longer. I
will have the materail for sale next week, and I plan to offer it around $2
gram! Now Dean, how in the hell do you justify selling material that you paid
less than $1 gram for for $15 to $20 gram, it is a chondrite anc a nice one, but
nevertheless, you DUMP (using your own words) rare material like it was a happy
meal. Then for this fall you try to manipulate the market with more
liesand self-reithous statements of self grandure. You are not crap when
it comes to North Africa. Your one seller has you by the balls and feeds you
what you want to hear, You my friend are the laughing stalk of Morocco. It is
about time you learned it.

Anyway, the point is folks, that you can pay Dean
his "Good Deal" price of $15 gram, or wait one week and pay me $2 gram, your
choice.

Thanks Dean, Payback is a sunofabitch isnt it? By
the way, you need to stop talking about me, it gets back to me, every word you
say, and right now I am more than a little pissed you
asshole!!!#@#@#
