Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall
Hello John and others, I have smaller pieces than yours so your visual assessment may be more accurate than my own, but my .3g Carancas appear a bit whiter than my .89g Tamdakht (Tishka). I remember earlier descriptions of the Carancas was that it is very friable. I haven't read if anybody had tried to crush the Tamdakht with just fingers. Another similar looking meteorite I have is the Weston. Carl G'Day List I noticed there's been alot of information posted in regards to the recent fall in Morocco, Tishka. I will call it that for the time being, knowing quite well it could change and there's alot of alternatives out there. Now I might be blowing a little bit of smoke here, so please don't flame me too hard. But I received a 4.5 gram fragment of Tishka and naturally my first move is I grab my loop and do a quick scan. I don't have the ability to do scientific analysis, but from doing a preliminary check it was like deja-vu. So yes, back to the boxes of my collection and sure enough I found a 3 gram piece of Carancas. I was amazed at the similarities. Now don't get me wrong here, this is just a visual inspection. The Carancas which had a nice area of slickenslide which has been referred to, also appears to be identical on Tishka. And then you have other characteristics and I can list a few more, but I don't possess the scientific knowledge that the members of the list have. But I just found it uncanny that I'm holding Carancas in one hand and Tishka in the other and I just could not tell them apart. Am I just assuming that we have something similar or just grabbing at straws? I would like hear your input . As I said earlier, I might just be blowing smoke, but has anyone else noticed the similarities? Cheers John _ Windows Live™: E-mail. Chat. Share. Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall info.
H... Is it possible to have a meteorite fall where some of the stones have absolutely no chondrites, yet some of the stones are "chock-full of them"? This sounds very fishy, especially after seeing the crater/pit pictures. Maybe Michael Farmer and a couple others in Tucson should compare their new Moroccan meteorites to see if our community is being sold completely different meteorites (but under the same name). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Michael, Svend, Bernd, Steve #2 or the other purchasers are the problem here. Look, I just held a 3 kilo individual, broken into pieces, but fit back together. It looks to me and others here at the show like an H3. Plenty of chondrules actually, I am not sure why you guys can't see chondrules, the meteorite is chock-full of them. Very nice stone, certainly not an H5 or 6, could be H3 or 4 would be my guess, leaning toward 3. It is a nice meteorite, but it sure looks like a pile of it is in Tucson right now. By the way, Room 184 at the Inn Suites is OPEN! Moritz Karl, Eric Olsen, Jim Strope and myself are up and running. Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall/ fact
I think it is technically important to distinguish between a "crater", which is caused by an object traveling at more than terminal velocity, and an "impact pit", which is just the usual small hole or dent (depending on ground quality) that any slow falling object (including most meteorites) will create. Hi Said All this may be true, but many collectors and dealers are hesitant only because of the past and rightfully so. Now it may be true that hundreds of kilos did not fall, but you can only cry "wolf" so many times before no one hears you. 8-10/g is a pipe dream my friend. I haven't seen a Moroccan fall that sold for that yet in any measurable quantity. Maybe I missed it, so please correct me if I am wrong. For the record, I have 3 Moroccan sources that I trust. Enough to wire 10s of thousands to them. Each has said that this IS a new fall, quantities are "small" (open to interpretation). I would assume that means under 40kg for Moroccans. If they are making up stories then my business will end as I do not want to do business with liars. Time will tell. Matt Morgan Matt Morgan Mile High Meteorites http://www.mhmeteorites.com P.O. Never a total known weight comes out from NWA, where is bassi that everybody said there was a ton or so of it, the same for chergach, only a few grams available from Moroccans right now, prices going down reason is moroccans themselves, and for your info mike, you said you don't beleive it until you get the pics, so why didn't you wait for photos and tell what is true, maybe you are telling list members LIES, since you're not sure of what you say. This fall is limited because it fell in Morocco, not chergach or bassi, where you can not get the facts, but since it's here, what's availble of it, is what is offering now. Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall news.
Perhaps it is not true, I don't know, Moroccans are certainly prone to making up lies, selling crap to anyone with money, and scamming everyone. Hence, my urge of caution to anyone wanting to buy. As a person who has spent nearly a half million $ in Morocco, I do have my suppliers and people I trust, and I trust most of what they say. Now, I am a show-me type of person, I do not believe this until I see photos or material, I still do not know if a fall occurred, I know damn well that many Moroccans do not give a shit about the meteorites, the business or the integrety of the falls (for example, ensuring that pieces are seperated and sold as what they are, not what makes more money). They want to milk collectors out of every last Dirham. Is this new fall real, or just the ugly broken pieces of Chergach that no one wants to buy (hence the weathering)? Moroccan people have done this to themselves, no one trusts much of what they say anymore, every fall, Bensour, Benguerir, Chergach, Oum Dreyga, Bassikounou, ALL of them were "only a few kilos" "this is all, there is no more" "You will be the only supplier" "buy it now, or you wont get any" "I paid more but will sell to you for $1.00 gram" blah blah blah. So, I am writing direct information that I am getting from a somewhat trustworthy supplier of mine in Morocco. He will be in Tucson, so you can ask him if he has some, or is it only you Aziz? We have heard this bird chirping a few times before. My customers are tired of paying $3 or $5 gram for every new fall from NWA area and them watching the price drop to $1 gram. I just got an interesting phone call from Morocco. It seems that this may be bigger than even the Moroccans are saying. I was told that more than one metric TON of meteorite fragments are recovered, and that apparently a massive stone fell in the Atlas mountains forming a crater, and shattering the stone into thousands of fragments. Not one complete stone found, only again MORE THAN ONE TON of fragments. I am awaiting photos. This one could be interesting! The area is completely under heavy snow right now though. Hello List Members, The bright fireball seen over Taliouine travelleing from southwest to the northeast, It has been seen over Igherm, Taliouine, Askaoune, so the right direction of the meteoritic fireball, is Igherm- tichka( Telouat where it fell). http://nwameteoritesss.skyrock.com/profil/photos/78989604 I wonder if a fireball can turn left or right and take the road to pass over Marrakech to Eljadida, maybe it just come for a tourism trip and have some swim at eljadida beach then get back to the space. Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan fall
Impacts that are audible are exceedingly rare events. Except for the utterly bizarre, and possibly singular example of Carancas, I don't know of any meteorite fall that was audible to anybody more than a few meters from the impact (I would guess a few Sikhote-Alin craters produced a fair bit of noise). If people actually heard the impact when they were too far away to immediately identify the site, this was a crater forming event- possible, but not very likely. Far more likely is that people heard sonic booms echoing around hills and valleys- sounds that would be far more impressive (and "scarier") than any impact sound. Of course, if there was a hypervelocity impact, people will be coming from all over the world to study it- and there may well be no meteorites at all. Re: [meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall
>The previously offered price is NO LONGER VALID for those who did >not make >initial requests. > Hmmm. Farmer said that he would be selling it next week for $2. What about the people who never emailed him but just decided to wait for him to put it on sale next week for $2 expecting him to follow through on his word like his reputation for keeping his word would normally indicate? Oh, well. I wrote this email because still have it for $15 a gram like I alwys had. Nice individuals with lots of crust. And mine was picked up the day of the fall. The material that me, meteorlab, bruno, gregory and Rob has was all picked up within a day or two after the fall. It fell in a military area and was witnessed by many people who quickly picked up the stones. Between us we cleaned Morocco dry and tried to get more but there was no more of this meteorite left. Farmer got lucky and showed up just as the new stuff from Algeria showed up in Erfoud which apparantly included the biggest pieces so it appears that my hopes of owning the main mass wont be materialized. However, the material from algeria was only picked up more recently and not within days of the fall. The meteorites from algeria was still on the ground when it rained and so has been exposed to rain. This meteorite is very porous and much more suseptable to water damage than most LL meteorites are. You will likely find that you will have more problems with material that came from algeria over the moroccan material that was picked up right after the fall and before it rained - even if it looks nice in the beginning - which I am sure that it well because the crust is just stunning. I would also like to point out to everybody that I have a 1.1 kilo one on ebay for around $9 a gram. I also have the largest one that fell in morocco at 1472 grams (It is killer with about 98% crust) but it appears that the main mass will have fallen in algeria. But if you want some for $15 let me know what size you want. Farmer says that he has a "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT" as per Jims Stropes email so you never know what the future price will be once he makes his anouncement. And remember that my stuff was picked up before the rain so should likely command a premium. Cheers DEAN PS: My apologies for my email to John. [meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall
I just got off the phone with Mike Farmer and he will be home on Tuesday to make an important announcement concerning the new Algerian/Moroccan fall. He wanted me to say that he has a file of all emails that registered requests for this meteorite while the battle was going on. These people who jumped to his defense will be rewarded with their requests filled to the best of his ability. The previously offered price is NO LONGER VALID for those who did not make initial requests. The price and availability of future sales is yet to be determined. He is NOT taking any more requests at this present time until everything gets sorted out. Best Wishes... Well, I is time for me to jump in here and rain on Dean Bessy's parade. I also have a substantial amount of this fall on the way via DHL as I type here! DEan DOES NOT have it all, or even close to HALF as he so states and is so full of bullshit, that I cant keep quiet here any longer. I will have the materail for sale next week, and I plan to offer it around $2 gram! Now Dean, how in the hell do you justify selling material that you paid less than $1 gram for for $15 to $20 gram, it is a chondrite anc a nice one, but nevertheless, you DUMP (using your own words) rare material like it was a happy meal. Then for this fall you try to manipulate the market with more lies and self-reithous statements of self grandure. You are not crap when it comes to North Africa. Your one seller has you by the balls and feeds you what you want to hear, You my friend are the laughing stalk of Morocco. It is about time you learned it. Anyway, the point is folks, that you can pay Dean his "Good Deal" price of $15 gram, or wait one week and pay me $2 gram, your choice. Thanks Dean, Payback is a sunofabitch isnt it? By the way, you need to stop talking about me, it gets back to me, every word you say, and right now I am more than a little pissed you asshole!!!#@#@# Mike Farmer

[meteorite-list] New Moroccan Fall
Hi folks, I received several individuals and fragments of the new Moroccan fall this afternoon, and couldn't resist quickly grinding a face onto one of the pieces and having a peek inside. This one fell at 16:17 GMT on 11th February.just about the same time that many of us were gathering for the start of Daryll Pitt's meteorite auction in Tucson. Kinda weird timing, don't you think?? It's a very fragile, almost crumbly meteorite that doesn't take a polish at all, so you might have to concentrate hard when looking at the picture I've posted here http://fernlea.tripod.com/newfall.html My largest individual is just over 200g and there are many dinky little, perfectly fusion crusted individuals that resememble the Holbrook & Pultusk "peas". The matrix had a much higher contrast when it was still wet with alcohol coolant, but it looks very much blander when dry and it can be difficult to see the small brecciation. I think LL6 is a pretty safe bet on this one, but we'll see. Cheers, Rob. http://fernlea.tripod.com/forsale.html Fernlea Meteorites, The Wynd, Off Dickson Lane, Milton of Balgonie, Fife.
