Hi Larry,

Your website looks awesome. You did a great job.

Looks like I have some reading to do tonight. I really enjoy reading
hunt reports and seeing the photos. Other than the Osceola fall, we
don't get much meteorite action down here in Flori-duh.

Best regards,

[meteorite-list] New Website Gathering Public Input on NASA Mars Images

2015-07-23 Thread Ron Baalke via Meteorite-list

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4664

New Website Gathering Public Input on NASA Mars Images
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
July 22, 2015

Fast Facts:

* Vast areas near Mars' south pole have been imaged by the Context Camera
on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

* At the citizen-science website "Planet Four: Terrains," volunteers help
identify features for even higher-resolution imaging.

Science-team members for NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter are soliciting
help from the public to analyze exotic features near the south pole of
Mars.

By categorizing features visible in images from the orbiter's Context
Camera (CTX), volunteers are using their own computers to help the team
identify specific areas for even more detailed examination with the orbiter's
High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera. HiRISE can
reveal more detail than any other camera ever put into orbit around Mars.

Information about how to participate is at the "Planet Four: Terrains"
website, at:

http://terrains.planetfour.org

Planet Four: Terrains is on a new platform released by the Zooniverse,
an organization that currently hosts 30 projects that enlist people worldwide
to contribute to discoveries in fields ranging from astronomy to zoology.
The new platform is designed to make it easier than ever for a researcher
needing help with data analysis to set up a task to involve volunteers.

Some of Mars resembles deserts on Earth, but Martian polar regions display
some quite unearthly processes and features. These are related to seasonal
freezing and thawing of carbon dioxide ice, which does not exist naturally
on Earth, but is manufactured and well-known as "dry ice." Every winter
the polar regions of Mars are covered with a seasonal polar cap of
carbon-dioxide
ice.

"In the spring the dry ice turns to gas and carves unusual features in
the Mars surface, resulting in exotic terrains described informally as
'spiders,' 'Swiss cheese' and 'channel networks,'" said HiRISE Deputy
Principal Investigator Candice Hansen, of the Planetary Science Institute,
Tucson, Arizona.

On the Planet Four: Terrains website, volunteers review images from the
south polar region of Mars and identify particular types of terrains.
Each image from CTX covers a swath of ground about 16 miles (30 kilometers)
wide, at a resolution of about 20 feet (6 meters) per pixel. The results
from the citizen scientist input through Planet Four: Terrains will be
used to target HiRISE for detailed seasonal studies beginning in mid-2016.
Each HiRISE image covers a swath about 3.2 miles (five kilometers) wide,
at a spatial scale of about 20 inches (half a meter) per pixel.

This new website is an outgrowth of the Planet Four initiative through
which more than 120,000 citizen scientists have analyzed HiRISE image
cutouts to measure fans that appear in the spring on the seasonal ice
cap. The Planet Four website is at:

http://www.planetfour.org

More information about Zooniverse is available at:

http://www.zooniverse.org

With CTX, HiRISE and four other instruments, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
has been investigating Mars since 2006. The mission launched on Aug. 12,
2005, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego, built and operates CTX. The University
of Arizona, Tucson, operates HiRISE, which was built by Ball Aerospace
& Technologies Corp. of Boulder, Colorado. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages
the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project NASA's Science Mission Directorate,
Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the orbiter and
collaborates with JPL to operate it. For additional information about
the project, visit:

Re: [meteorite-list] New website : Encyclopedia of French Meteorites (BEUSTE)

2013-01-03 Thread karmaka
Hello Pierre,

congratulations on this excellent new website and thanks for the effort!

There's one question about the meteorite of BEUSTE.

http://meteor-center.com/encyclopedie/?p=73

It's always said that the Musée de Pau contains the 420g mass.

When I went to Beuste and Pau last year I wanted to see the specimen.
That's why I phoned all the museums of Pau to find out in which museum in Pau
the meteorite is exhibited. Strangely, on the phone no museum in Pau could
confirm
that they actually have or exhibit this meteorite. Even the mayor of Beust
couldn't help.

Can anyone confirm that the 420g BEUSTE mass is actually still held in a museum
in Pau?

Has anyone actually seen it there in the recent past?

Best regards,

Martin

[meteorite-list] New Website Tool Now Available For Identifying Mission-Accessible Near-Earth Asteroids and Their Next Observing Opportunities

2012-03-20 Thread Ron Baalke

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nhats.html

New Website Tool Now Available For Identifying Mission-Accessible
Near-Earth Asteroids and Their Next Observing Opportunities

NASA/JPL Near-Earth Object Program Office
March 20, 2012

Note: Website tool is available here: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/nhats/

Observers, mission planners, and other interested users are invited to
use a new website tool to view a list of near-Earth asteroids that are
among the most accessible for future robotic or human space flight
round-trip rendezvous missions. For each of up to several hundred
asteroids listed, the following information is available:

* Absolute magnitude (H).
* Estimated diameter (meters).
* Minimum delta-V mission and the corresponding round trip flight
time. Delta-V, in km/s, is defined here as the total velocity
change required for the spacecraft to depart from a 400 km
circular Earth orbit, rendezvous with the NEA and return to Earth
with an entry velocity less than the specified threshold of 12 km/s.
* Minimum mission duration time (round trip time in days) and the
  corresponding mission delta-V.
* The number of viable trajectories found for that NEA, which is a
  proxy for its accessibility.
* The next optical observing opportunity and the peak apparent
  visual magnitude.
* The next Arecibo radar observing opportunity and the corresponding
  signal to noise ratio (SNR).
* The next Goldstone radar observing opportunity along with the
  corresponding SNR.
* Metric for orbit accuracy (Orbit Condition Code).
* Orbit solution ID.

Users can customize the table of accessible NEAs by specifying limits on
total delta-V, mission duration, stay time at the asteroid, launch date
interval, asteroid absolute magnitude, and orbit condition code. The
table can be sorted on almost all the bulleted items above.

Clicking on each object's designation takes the user to an
object-specific page, which provides additional details, including a
plot showing total mission delta-V for each combination of mission
duration and launch date (2015 - 2040). Another click on the object's
designation opens a new window that provides orbital and physical data
for the object.

The Near-Earth Object Human Space Flight Accessible Targets Study
(NHATS) began in September 2010 under the auspices of NASA Headquarters
Planetary Science Division of the Science Mission Directorate in
cooperation with the Advanced Exploration Systems Division of the Human
Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. Its purpose was to
identify any known Near-Earth Objects, particularly Near-Earth Asteroids
(NEAs) that might be accessible by future human spaceflight missions.
The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
(JPL) independently performed the first phase of the NHATS study in
parallel to validate the results.

NEAs are discovered almost daily, and often the time just after
discovery is also the optimal time to provide follow-up observations to
secure their orbits and characterize their physical nature. These
follow-up observations are particularly important for those NEAs that
could become potential future mission targets. The goal behind this
website is to monitor these NEA discoveries daily and determine if any
among them warrant additional study as they might become attractive
mission targets.

Brent Barbee (GSFC) developed the process that automatically downloads
orbital information on newly discovered NEAs from the JPL Small Bodies
Database (SBDB) on a daily basis. He then performs trajectory
calculations using the method of patched conics for the spacecraft and
with full precision ephemerides for the Earth and NEOs obtained from
JPL's Horizons system to determine which among them may meet the NHATS
accessibility constraints. The results of this daily analysis are then
immediately uploaded to the NHATS table. A process generated by Paul
Chodas (JPL) then provides, for each NHATS-compliant NEA, the details of
future observation opportunities that might allow the NEA orbit to be
improved with follow-up optical astrometric data. Some of these
observing opportunities would also allow the NEA's physical nature to be
characterized using photometric and spectroscopic observations. In cases
where there are future close Earth approaches, radar astrometric and
physical characterization observations may be possible; these
opportunities are listed as well.

Working closely with Brent Barbee and Paul Chodas, Alan Chamberlin (JPL)
was largely responsible for creating this Accessible NEAs website.

2011-10-29 Thread Jason Snyder
Jason, very nice site indeed! I too have just recently completed a very simple
site dealing with meteorites and am sometimes confused with you on the list by
others (not sure how that could happen) but wanted to share my site as well.
Mine is more of a personal site sharing what I love to do in my "spare" time.
With the key word being spare; having three children, all in different hobbies
and sports keeps me busy enough, not to mention being a middle school biology
teacher. Please check out my site and provide any and all feedback as it is
still a "work in progress..."

Hello All,
I've spent the past several months working on a website in my spare
time. Unfortunately, it's not as educational as I would have liked
yet because I simply haven't had the time to improve the general
pages. But there's a reasonable assortment of meteorites for sale,
and I did my best with the photos, some of which are pretty cool (you
might check out the page for the lunar NWA 6470). I tried to include
a little more information and research than is usually put into such
things, and turned up some cool facts and stories about some of the
specimens being offered.

The URL is: www.fallsandfinds.com

You'll also find some pieces of new and unusual meteorites as well as
pieces of some meteorites not available anywhere else.

For those of you waiting for a piece of the recent house-hitter from
Poland, I was able to obtain a few grams of Soltmany fragments from a
friend who literally drove all night to get to the place of the fall
shortly after it occurred. I wasn't really sure what to charge for
them since no one else seems to have any for sale, so I compared to a
few other recent European falls of similar TKW's.

I hope you enjoy the site and pictures and hope to hear from y'all; if
you've got some suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'll be uploading
some collection photos soon -- the site is definitely still under
construction, so please stay tuned for updates.

Hello Patrick in Canada!
Welcome to the List! (although you have been "lurking" on this List for some
2 yrs...)
Congratulations on your revamped website: I find it to be quite easy to "go
thru"!

By the way, re. the Zinder pallasite on your site, you mention:
Find 2004 in Niger - but then you go on mentioning that: It was purchased
in 2001 by a mineral collector...
Well, one of the dates is wrong, as obviously, it cannot be purchased before
it was found! :)

On another note: Never mind about the Good, the Bad and the Ugly emails that
sometimes we come across in this List,

but here is an idea to follow for List Members: What are your choices for
the GOOD, the BAD and theUGLY. METEORITES?

Hello Listoids.
I have been a lurker on this list for some time. I enjoy the Good, the Bad
and the Ugly!

Now I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to The List. I
am a collector in Canada and I have been collecting meteorites for a few
years now. I try to focus on Pallasites, but I have been collecting whatever
comes my way.

Meteorites have turned from a hobby of mine into a real passion. I have been
out a few times to look for them, but Canada is not the best place in the
world for that. But I have recently been extremely lucky in the Glorieta
Mountain strewnfield.

Some of you might have already stumbled across my website - it has been up
for about two years now. I have been working feverishly for the past few
weeks on a complete revamp, bringing it up to date. If you are interested,
please check it out at:
www.pallasite.ca
Hopefully you will not find too many errors and omissions, but if you do,
please point them out to me! I would really appreciate it!

So, happy collecting to us all. Let the meteorites fall where they may. and
let's go get them!!!
See you all in Ensisheim!

[meteorite-list] New Website Updated (No really, it's better now)

2004-10-18 Thread Peanut ..
Hello All,
My new website has been updated and will continue to be updated through the
rest of the year. If anyone read my last posting and then went to my site, I
apologize for that. It was terrible! So it's all new and the links appear to
all work now. New pages will be coming online shortly. They will include:

A For Sale page (Already up and will be updated regularly - Go buy
something!)
A monthly contest (Nov 1, 2004)
A seperate page wih ordering information (Thursday October 21, 2004)
A monthly focus (ASAP)
Links (tonight)
My Personal Collection (ASAP)
A trade page (ASAP - Meteorites and other items)
A rocks/fossils/minerals page (ASAP - It's how I got into meteorites)

Other pages will manifest over time! This site is intended to provide
education for newer people and fun for everyone else. I hope it does both.

I am adding a links page before morning (6am PST) so if anyone would like to
have your meteorite website linked off this page, let me know and I'll get
it on there.

This does not include those who have already emailed me:
MeteoriteArticles
meteoritelabels
Illinois Meteorites, LTD
Impactika
Rocks from Space Inc.
If anyone would like to contribute (ie., write) a Monthly Focus article,
email me and we'll go over it.

Also, if anyone would like to donate meteorites for the contest, I need 11
pieces, I'll also include who donated them. Any donations for the contest
will be used specifically for the contest only!

Well, I'll do my best to bring you guys a simple and fun site, you do your
best to give suggestions along the way. Oh yeah, and you can feel free to
buy some stuff too!

Thanks All and Be Well,

Bonsoir Pierre-Marie, hello List,

Even with my eyeglasses I have problems reading the small-size
letters of "Liste de diffusion", of "Météorites à vendre", etc. These
gray, minuscule letters on a white background (hardly any contrast)
make it almost impossible for me to read. A different background
color (like the light and dark blue on the right) would be helpful.

[meteorite-list] New Website....mine

2003-02-26 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Hello Everybody,

This last week I have finally been working on something I have needed for a
long time. A website. With the change in Meteorite Times the ideal was
first to make a site to place and archive my meteorite articles...so please
feel free to visit. www.MeteoriteArticles.com

After working on it a little I decided to add some newspaper articles, and I
plan on adding more and possibly several hundred in a different format, a
list of meteorite book reviews I have been working on, and some meteorite
sale pages.

As the website is still pretty new you are likely to see a bunch on changes
and additions, given free time, in the next couple months. It is however
now complete enough to let everyone know about it. Please take a moment to
tell me what you think and if you have a website and would like have it
linked from mine let me know as that will be one of the additions I will be
adding shortly.

day...
I have been very busy updating my new website this
last week. Alot has been done, alot more still to do though. I did create a cool
Bensour page, with information and photos from Africa. I plan to do this for all
of my meteorite chases around the world. It just takes time.
I have alot of nice things for sale, so if anyone
wants to make an order off of my website tonight, Ill discount it 15%!

I also have 50 ebay items ending tomorrow, many
near one cent still! Everything from Bencubbin to Martian meteorites and all in
between is up for grabs.
